So the WashPo poll shows that Americans think Republicans suck a little more than Dem’s. But seriously - it looks to me like the ‘both sides are to blame’ meme has stuck.
We see traitorous imbeciles. The American people see the ‘logic’ of David Gregory.
I wouldn’t put too much weight into one poll. The only thing that matters are the election results. I’m actually more interested in the congressional ballot polls which so far are looking good for the democrats.
I’ve got it! Boehner’s strategic adviser is Rod Blagojevich – “I’ve got this thing and it’s f*****g golden, and, uh, uh, I’m just not giving it up for f***in’ nothing. I’m not gonna do it. And, and I can always use it.”
Is anyone having trouble staying logged in here?? I’m having weird problems, keeps asking me to sign in over and over and over……. when I try to work on a post. Grrrrrrrrr!
Thanks Hopefruit, seems to be no problems (so far!) commenting, but checked the WP forum and others are having weird glitchy trouble logging in to the admin part of their blogs. Sheesh, never a dull moment
I saw there was something acting funny because you had repeated posts with no content and that was puzzling. Figured you were busy with work or something came up so I threw up a post.
Things are working well on my end but hopefully WP can fix the glitch on your end.
I lost this thread altogether (I’m on my desktop at work) and every time I refreshed, I got the previous one, so I finally scrolled all the way down (141 comments!) and then clicked on “Irresponsible”. Don’t know how I got kicked out, but I’m not moving till it’s time for me to go home.
Thanks Bill - and everyone! Seems to be okay now …. touch wood. Lots of people having similar logging-in-to-admin-part-of-site problems according to WP’s support forum, so they tend to act quick-ish when it’s a widespread glitch.
The Treasury Department maintains that it has no ability to pick and choose which bills to pay if it’s short of cash. According to the agency’s inspector general, its computer systems are designed to “make each payment in the order it comes due.” Full stop.
Under this view, if Congress fails to lift the debt ceiling, the U.S. government will only have money to cover about 65 percent of its bills. Some payments will simply fail to clear. Perhaps a payment to a defense contractor comes up short. Maybe a Social Security check bounces. Maybe an interest payment to bondholders fails.
That last possibility is the most worrisome. If the U.S. government misses a payment to bondholders, the consequences could be severe. “A default would be unprecedented and has the potential to be catastrophic,” warns Treasury. “Credit markets could freeze, the value of the dollar could plummet, U.S. interest rates could skyrocket, the negative spillovers could reverberate around the world, and there might be a financial crisis and recession that could echo the events of 2008 or worse.”
Other financial analysts agree. A missed debt payment could cause the entire financial system to seize up. “Let us be perfectly clear,” warns a note from RBC Capital Markets, “crossing the debt ceiling would be catastrophic.”
Wa post-
You see ? Whatever comes first! That means it would need a act of congress to not default on bond holders.
That’s what boners means, when he says no default. That’s the bill he will bring to floor, pay interest first and reprogram computers.
I know where going on!
I’m so damn disgusted with this Tea Party Shutdown. It’s so damn depressing and maddening. Good thing I have my new grandbabe as a joyful diversion. We’re all thrilled with all the reporting on her wonderfulness——except maybe my little grandson who was here yesterday. I excitedly said, “Braden, come here. I want to show you a picture of your new cousin!” He took a look at the adorable new wee one on my computer and didn’t seem to be overly impressed, sorta dismissively said, “She’s just a baby.” Guess the hours old just a baby didn’t look like she was going to be much good for playing cars and trucks and trains with him any time soon :)
I would personally like to congratulate you on your major contribution to Gb #4, Dotster! (I noticed you were quite proud of yourself yesterday, or was it the day before?) Congrats too to the new mom and dad, and a special ‘Welcome!’ to baby! I don’t doubt Braden will be bragging about his ‘baby cousin’ soon.
You actually reminded me of a surprising lesson I learned when I had my only offspring - it was as if *I* ceased to exist. Not kidding, nobody asked how I was anymore. In fact, especially in the baby stage, I don’t think they even saw me, nor did friends remember me at Christmas as was their wont previously. Quite an eye-opening experience.
Yes—-really great, Pete Sessions.
These people are crazy and the most destructive force in this country I’ve ever seen. Determination to destroy the economy, destroy the country—-they think this is a positive sign.
Rep. Pete Sessions says the GOP's renewed threats to tank the entire economy represent a "great, positive attitude"
http://t.co/cenZJ0XKdN
No. Absolutely not. This is not an economic issue, this is a direct challenge to our democracy. Fortunately, President Obama and the Dem leadership in Congress know it.
You’re too nice. I don’t even have the vocabulary to describe the anger and disgust I feel for him and the other media enablers. This is no joke and they are lower than the scummiest scum I can imagine.
MSM jerks like this are precisely why so many people partly blame the Dems. The MSM Republican toadies make it sound like the Rs are trying to do the good thing and the Dems are standing in the way. What dishonest jackasses.
Hopefully that holds true and the polls are being misrepresented, once again by the MSM to give cover for the GOP. The MSM in this country cannot stand as-is. They are a major danger in terms of spreading misinformation and lying by omission.

This is brilliant. If you can do those “twit-longer” things, you should post this on twitter. It is actually based on reality, and it’s very sadly accurate.
Hey Zizi are you still posting at 8:15PM ET / 7:15PM CT because this post is getting crowded and I can’t see your post on WP Admin. Are you having trouble? Do you need my help?
UT, I had to go out impromptu to get some medication. Just got back. I will be running a little late so you can go ahead and post a thread. I will go later. Sorry about that. Thanks
Donors offer $10M to reopen Head Start in 6 states. http://t.co/uvOo77d2Tn
— Niraj Chokshi (@NirajC) October 7, 2025
Well, if we can’t save everything and private donors will help out?
It’s getting to be that way, bc baby boomers are just so scared about debt. And they all vote , everyone of them.
Unfortunate but true.
Most baby boomers are like me - they spent 30 years of their lives buried in debt - and at a time when interest rates rose to 18%. It was my parents generation who hated debt - they saw their parents suffer the depression 1929-1939
So now I have just got out of debt, have some retirement savings which the GOP are about to plunder - big time. Any baby boomer who supports the GOP is not thinking with their brain.
As the spokesperson said, this is unsustainable, and will have to be paid back from Federal funds once Boehner steps up. This is like emptying the ocean with a beach pail.
Hey Bob, here is a comment I posted in response to one of your tweets to the DOJ:
Thanks Bob for all your tweets alerting the DOJ about people threatening to do great harm to this country. While you are it, you may want to remind the DOJ, Democratic leaders in Congress and of course WE the people, about Section 3, of the 14th Amendment which applies to a great many Republicans in Congress, including John Boehner, Eric Cantor and Mitch McConnell. Here is what Section 3 of the 14th Amendment says:
“No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any state, who having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United Sates, or as a member of any state legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any state, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof….”
Personally, I think Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, and all the teabag members of Congress who have instigated the shut down the government and are refusing to honor their constitutional obligation to pay the debts of the United States, as is required by both Article I, Section 8, and Section 4, of the 14th Amendment, are engaged in insurrection and rebellion against the Constitution and should be thrown out of office. The same goes for Congressional leaders who are giving them “aid and comfort.”
Agree, nath. And, thank hyou for your insights on Section 3 of the 14th. I’m going to persist in directing messages to the DoJ, along these lines, and will continue to cc various folk at the White House and in Congress.
As you and everyone here knows, I’m not a lawyer. But, I can read and can analyze risk and harm quite well. These folk are doing real harm, every second that they threaten in any way the good faith and credit of the United States of America.
They have to be stopped. Hopefully, the DoJ will act before calamity hits the global economy.
Bob, you are doing a wonderful, and absolutely crucial, job! It’s people like you who have blunted the power of the unethical reporting and analyses by the so called mainstream media. We all must all join you in pushing back hard against these despicable people who are doing real harm to innocent people simply because the majority of us voted to elect and re-elect, President Obama. Since I don’t twit, I will send e -mails, highlighting your message, to the DoJ, my two U.S. Senators, and my Representative. My local paper is aright wing rag. It rarely publishes ” Letters to the Editor” that dares to challenge GOP right wingers.
Okay, here comes my crazy analysis. :) I don’t think we actually reach the debt ceiling on the 17th, or perhaps what I should say is the government won’t be out of money. I remember seeing Lew on a financial show and he said we’d reach the debt ceiling in early November. I also recall him saying recently that if the Republicans refused to raise the debt ceiling he would perhaps be forced to break the law.
My interpretation: the government will not be out of money, the law just forbids disbursing funds above the present ceiling. If Lew pays all the bills anyway, what are the Republicans going to say…we’re going to lock Lew up and impeach Obama because they didn’t let the country go into default? Does this plausible to anyone else?
You believe he would let the economy crash? His first responsibility is to the stability of the nation. I believe he will either pay them anyway or fold. I don’t think he will fold because I think he was prepared for this confrontation.
I don’t agree. To my understanding, the 14th Amendment allows payment of debts incurred in the event of insurrection. The Insurrection Act defines insurrection as a violent rebellion that requires the President to employ troops. Of course, there have been a million laws written to the North and South of both, so anything is possible.
For sure, Bob and I’m no Constitutionalist. Trust that I hope your and the interpretation of many others is right on the mark. By now, you should know, I always have a different (sometimes weird) take on things. :)
We talk but PBO has this all figured out already and I trust what he chooses to do is within legal limits so I will just wait for him and end the speculation
Well the right wing truckers are on their way. They are going to disrupt traffic on a major thoroughfare in DC and attempt to arrest some Congressmen and women. There’s your violence.
FayPax, here is exactly what Section 4, of the 14th Amendment says:
“The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned. But neither the United States nor any state shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void.”
The plain reading of this amendment clearly says that all U.S. “public debt, ” which has been “authorized by law”… “shall not be questioned.” The only the debts exempted are debts incurred in aiding insurrection/rebellion or claims about the loss as a result of the freeing of slaves. I am not familiar with the “Insurrection Act” you are referencing, but I would appreciate getting more information from you about it.
My only reservation is that I don’t see how the President can legally invoke the 14th Amendment to defy Congress. Section 5 of the 14th Amendment clearly states: “The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions” of the Amendment. No where in the Amendment is the President given power to enforce Sections 1-4 of the 14th Amendment without Congressional authorization.
Thanks Nath. Sometimes, I am not as clear as I should be. It isn’t that I disagree with you or Bob, for I am certain both of you are far more knowledgeable than I, but I tend to rely more on how I believe the Constitution will be interpreted by our activist Supreme Court. These justices have ignored precedent, Congress’s duty to regulate and secure the economic welfare of the nation, and the Constitution in favor of a majority ideology that is entrenched in the Articles of Confederation.
Revisiting their debate over the healthcare law, I found it interesting that they deemed the Merchant Marines Mandate “too old and outdated to be applicable today”, but when it came to immigration had no problem reaching all the way back to the caverns of abolitionists to fashion an interpretation.
In determining what the President’s response should be, I think many forget how limited his power actually is. Legislating is the province of Congress. Despite the clamor for the President to act, or influence, the truth is, under the Constitution that is not his duty. It is to enforce the laws enacted by Congress, as you so clearly point out.
The 14th Amendment was enacted because of the Civil War and slavery, which gave way to insurrection. I would expect this “state’s right” Supreme Court to interpret it with that in mind.
The Insurrection Act is what President’s use when they call out the National Guard. My “guess” (can’t remember and too lazy to look it up) is the Act was an offshoot of the 14th Amendment. It would have been a right assumed during the Rodney King riots, Katrina and Operation Wall Street…events where masses of people express discontent.
IDIOTS! So the GOP Senators are gonna “filibuster” giving furloughed workers backpay…wow. That’s fine, but umm…optics.
Republicans to block quick passage of back-pay bill
“I think it’s really premature to be dealing with that until we resolve the underlying problem,” said Sen. John Cornyn of Texas. “We’ve offered a number of bills to try to alleviate some of the hardship and they’ve been swatted down out of hand.”
Cornyn said he didn’t expect Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to bring it to the floor because of GOP objections.
“There is no sense of urgency for us to do it. The federal government is shut down,” said Sen. Richard Burr, a Republican of North Carolina who supports providing back pay but not until the government has reopened. “I think it’s very legitimate to take our time on this and hopefully Senator Reid will open it up for amendments and we can see how it ends up.”
Cornyn said if Democrats put the bill on the floor Republicans would not be okay with legislative shortcuts to pass it – such as a voice vote or unanimous consent agreement.
Asked if the bill should be subject to amendments and filibusters – procedures that could delay passage for several days - Cornyn said, “yeah, we ought to legislate.”
I have no training in law whatsoever so please consider the source of this suggestion.
instead of POTUS violating the debit ceiling so that the extremists can use that as a justification to impeach him, I have a tentative suggestion.
I don’t know if it is possible to go after the constitutionality of existence of the debit ceiling its self and permanently nullify its existence through litigation.
is it possible for the White House or DOJ to urgently sue (in DC Federal court or wherever) to demand that the debit ceiling be ruled unconstitutional?
Basis for unconstitutionality would be because of the threat it posses to the “full faith and credit” of the government;
if it is declared unconstitutional then the debit ceiling will become permanently moot as a tool for this extremist congress and others that follow.
Nullification of the debit ceiling would eliminate any future blackmail. result would be like permanently taking matches from the hands of legislative arsonist.
please help out with making this concise, legal and operational
Prof .@BarackObama, can .@WhiteHouse sue 2 have concept of debit ceiling declared unconstitutional; Permanently nullify political blackmail

There was an article about a week ago reporting on the fact that PB O had already asked the DOJ I trhink for the last to do analysis of use of the 14th amendment. The DOJ will not reveal the contents of their analysis through FOIA because it is a work LAWYER/CLIENT work
Still trying to catch up. Wow! Great coverage.
GOPLOL!
Now ladies you know it was irresponsible to post “the shirt” photo when there is so much serious work to be done. I literally swooned seeing it again.
I apologize on behalf of Meta - she started it!
:) :)
Okay, but it’s so hard to recover from that photo. I LOVE IT!!! :)
I SURE DID
Tsk! Tsk! Tsk! /smh/
These Tea party thugs are shameless, unpatriotic un- American, and treasonous. They are the current major threat to all of us globally, today.
Hi, OMF! Are you one of those going to listen to Axelrod tomorrow night?

I agree completely. It’s about the individual races. We’re pushing back. I didn’t like those approval/disapproval numbers for the Dem’s on this.
I’ve got it! Boehner’s strategic adviser is Rod Blagojevich – “I’ve got this thing and it’s f*****g golden, and, uh, uh, I’m just not giving it up for f***in’ nothing. I’m not gonna do it. And, and I can always use it.”

Ct. daughter just posted a photo of a turkey next to her office bldg. She made a little jokey—-said every office has at least one.
The GOP office has many - too many to count!
ImB! And i notice you guys kept it down to one thread. Wheeee!
Congrats vc on 1st! :)
  Indeed, I’m first before you! TY. ;)
Hey vc you’re back!
I am. I reported in to you - guess you missed it while WordP was pushing you around. ;)
Really?
Watch it for us, Jovie, let us know what the GOPer says.
I have no intention of watching.
I am thinking if after one month maybe we should take them up on this offer. Bc we could run on partial shutdown.
no way Jovie. It would never end.
All or nothing.
No - we should not take them up on any offer. Instead we should vote them out in 2014. :)
Not a good idea. Once you start caving into their piecemeal demands, they’ll know they can just keep doing it.
No. Absolutely not. This is not an economic issue, this is a direct challenge to our democracy. Fortunately, President Obama and the Dem leadership in Congress know it.
He really is a shilling piece of shit.
Yes, - I was thinking the same thing Chips. He is no longer trying to be subtle - Azzhole!

Absolutely brilliant!, Thanks Isonprize!
correct timeline and chronology
Except VC is right. SCOTUS decision was June 2012!
Excellent~ I borrowed/stole it. Gave you H/T.
Second thought for today: He disgusts himself.
He knows what he is doing. His life is so miserable he does not even care.

Agree. Thugs will see this as the “right” way to fund Head Start programs and say it proves Shut Down is working!

I think this is where PBO will go next if they continue this treason! He is just waiting …….Eric Holder has papers in hand…
Sorry, Layla my comment was in response to Bob’s tweet!
That’s OK buddy!
Well Bob, Congress is not only violating Section 4 of the 14th Amendment, but also Article I, Section 8, paragraph one, of the original Constitution.
#TrustBarack
Bob, you are doing a wonderful, and absolutely crucial, job! It’s people like you who have blunted the power of the unethical reporting and analyses by the so called mainstream media. We all must all join you in pushing back hard against these despicable people who are doing real harm to innocent people simply because the majority of us voted to elect and re-elect, President Obama. Since I don’t twit, I will send e -mails, highlighting your message, to the DoJ, my two U.S. Senators, and my Representative. My local paper is aright wing rag. It rarely publishes ” Letters to the Editor” that dares to challenge GOP right wingers.
great point!
I was trying to use my lay person’s understanding to write a related thought below;
but your is even more precise and well researched (as usual)
Bob, wondered whether you could send similar thoughts to either Sen. Reid, or Senators Murray/Schumer and Leigh
They probably have considered that but you just never know - given all the crap that the gop is putting the nation through
Will do, Linda. Thank you!
Apart from the alternate reality, the shutdown is going terribly for the GOP

So I forgot the work “seem”. :)
“word”…I quit!
 No, don’t quit. Funny enough I read them all the correct way, not noticing anything until you squeaked, ;)
There will be no law breaking under PBO.
You believe he would let the economy crash? His first responsibility is to the stability of the nation. I believe he will either pay them anyway or fold. I don’t think he will fold because I think he was prepared for this confrontation.
No I think he will go the legal way, see Bob’s tweet!
The language of the 14th is much broader than that, FayPax.
For sure, Bob and I’m no Constitutionalist. Trust that I hope your and the interpretation of many others is right on the mark. By now, you should know, I always have a different (sometimes weird) take on things. :)
Nothing ‘weird’ about your comments, my friend!!!
Thanks for this Isonprize. I had to change June 2013 to June 2012 because SCOTUS upheld ObamaCare in 2012 not 2013.
oh perfect thanks for doing that UT it’s just brilliant!
IDIOTS! So the GOP Senators are gonna “filibuster” giving furloughed workers backpay…wow. That’s fine, but umm…optics.
Republicans to block quick passage of back-pay bill
whaaaattt?
Don’t know if this makes ANY sense:
I have no training in law whatsoever so please consider the source of this suggestion.
instead of POTUS violating the debit ceiling so that the extremists can use that as a justification to impeach him, I have a tentative suggestion.
I don’t know if it is possible to go after the constitutionality of existence of the debit ceiling its self and permanently nullify its existence through litigation.
is it possible for the White House or DOJ to urgently sue (in DC Federal court or wherever) to demand that the debit ceiling be ruled unconstitutional?
Basis for unconstitutionality would be because of the threat it posses to the “full faith and credit” of the government;
if it is declared unconstitutional then the debit ceiling will become permanently moot as a tool for this extremist congress and others that follow.
Nullification of the debit ceiling would eliminate any future blackmail. result would be like permanently taking matches from the hands of legislative arsonist.
please help out with making this concise, legal and operational
There was an article about a week ago reporting on the fact that PB O had already asked the DOJ I trhink for the last to do analysis of use of the 14th amendment. The DOJ will not reveal the contents of their analysis through FOIA because it is a work LAWYER/CLIENT work
great! I missed that article;
we can now finish the political confrontation of the extremist extortionist that are holding the country back from attaining its full potential
Idon, do you still have a link to the article? If you do, and there no copyright issues, please share it with us.
