Being an original baby boomer and a child of the ’60s, an insider to the rock ‘n’ roll generation, I used to rave about the 1930s as one of my favorite eras, stylistically – the clothes, everything Art Deco, etc. I’d act like it was a part of antiquity that I had found and discovered a love for … until one day a same-age friend said, “Oh, 1930. Sixteen years before we were born.”

Kind of ruined the whole damned thing, ya know?

Well, JOB, you really were onto something. I think the most beautiful buildings were built in the 30’s in that wonderful art deco style. And there was such an elegance in the clothes, if you had the money to get the best. Of course, the vast majority of women were struggling through the Depression and wore ugly homemade house dresses. Still, art deco styling makes you feel elegant just looking at it. And there was great, great music in those years.

The US media has now stopped egging on Tzar Vlad – now that they see the writing on the wall, with the realization that PBO is NOT going to war…no more cheering Putin with the “Obama weak” chorus…

    • April 27, 2014 at 9:45 pm

The author of this article substantially misses how Putin’s actions have galvanized Ukrainians, even throughout the East and South, against him.

Agree with the author that if Putin invades, the costs to him and Russia are going to be very high including the fact that he will need to deploy several hundred thousand Russian troops to control whatever territory he occupies. The consequences to those troops and their families will make them think their Afghanistan occupation was a vacation. Ukrainians (and all the expats who’d return to Ukraine to fight the occupation would) cause ceaseless Russian casualties. Remember, highly skilled members of Israel’s current and former IDF are Ukrainian and several have already indicated they are prepared to return and fight.

The separatists have no capacity to sustain their activities and will likely become demotivated if doesn’t invade.

The only open issue at the moment is how many people are going to die, because it’s improbable Tzar Vlad is going to come to begin observing the rule of law and abandon his illegal occupation of Crimea and his illegal incursions and provocations in other regions of Ukraine.

My friend in FL says the word is that Charlie Crist may, indeed, be on his way to being re-elected governor to oust that awful Rick Scott. She also describes Scott’s “look” and mannerisms up close as that of “an alien,” but apparently that didn’t stop him from being elected once … so we’ll see how it goes! At the very least, Charlie’s hooking up with the right people, to include Pres. Obama and Gov. O’Malley.

Y’know, I love this story, and am clearly happy that this man overcame his stubbornness to finally enroll and get the life-saving surgery he needed. But to then claim that your surviving has nothing to do with politics is disingenuous at best, and just plain selfish at worst. Sure, you say, you’ll try to sign up some friends in similar circumstances, but none of that is due to any political party, right, mr. i-go-it-alone?
Good thing, Obamacare will survive just fine with or without its benefactors’ appreciation.

  19. April 27, 2014 at 10:08 pm

Due to space constraints on Twitter, this tweet is probably as clear as mud (sorry, no room for Pres Obama), but check this out:

“Obama signed a law on aid to Ukraine this month that includes a clause that allows the U.S. to go after assets of Russian officials and their allies who are deemed complicit in ‘significant corruption.’

‘This is a declaration of war by the Obama administration on the current governing Russian elite,’ Ariel Cohen, senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation, a Washington-based research group, said by phone from New York. ‘There will be a lot of people potentially targeted.’

One possible weapon in this new battle is Dmitry Firtash, 48, the billionaire Ukrainian and major Raiffeisen client who was arrested in Vienna last month on U.S. bribery charges, according to Mark Galeotti, a Russian organized crime expert at New York University who advises regulators on money laundering.”

    This is edge-of-your-seats suspense.

Those who say President Obama is opaque don’t listen to him. He clearly stated that we will still have arrows in our quiver when sanctions are announced.

And here’s a quote from Brenner:
“In short, no chance for an agreement here,” Bremmer told BI. “More sanctions coming this week.”

    • April 27, 2014 at 10:23 pm

The Bloomberg article is the same one that Bobfr posted in the thread above. Sorry for the duplicate (tweets don’t display in a white box with photos on this computer when I’m on Chrome). 😦

Speaking of Bloomberg News, the lead story on @knx1070 in Los Angeles tonight is that Toyota will move a portion of its work force from Torrance to Plano Texas (because of less regulation, a feather in Perry’s hat unfortunately, so be prepared for nonstop MSM gushing tomorrow when the announcement will actually be made).

    • April 27, 2014 at 10:49 pm

It can be argued that US foreign policy since the end of the Civil War has been primarily been aimed at economics and finance. Sometimes we’re on the side of the angels, sometimes “he may be a son of a bitch, but he’s our son of a bitch”. But the US has always had a sophisticated appreciation that hard and soft power go together. That Russia, 20 years after the fall of the Soviet Union, is still stuck in a militaristic mindset which appreciates only hard power shows that it is nowhere near being able to join the world system.

“While Russian media continue to spread hype about the Ukrainian government cutting off Crimea’s water supply, evidence mounts that this is no more than a media provocation aimed to cover the incompetence of officials from the self-proclaimed ‘Republic of Crimea.’

According to a UNN interview with Yuriy Odarchenko, chairman of the Kherson Regional State Administration, water is not reaching Crimea though the North Crimean Canal due to the incompetence of professionals who ‘seized’ the Crimean part of the facilities.”

State visit of US President Barack H. Obama

In my wildest dreams I never ever thought that there would ever be other than a white person as President of the United States. When then Sen Obama won the democratic nomination – I thought the election had been given to the GOP – oh me of little faith. At that time I did not know the man at all – but so many knew the man and his message. As November 2008 drew closer, I caught onto the hope – and every time I see it written – President Barack H Obama – that hope grows stronger.
