Justin Huggler: Why is Barack Obama drinking beer at 11am?

Angela Merkel welcomed Barack Obama to the G7 summit with a traditional Bavarian breakfast on Sunday – complete with a half-litre of beer. But before he could get down to business, Mrs Merkel treated him to a full Bavarian breakfast of white sausages, pretzels and foaming lager. Eleven in the morning might be considered a little early for a beer in some parts of the world, but in Bavaria breakfast is not complete without a weissbier, as the local wheat beer is called.

It’s not quite as hard-drinking as it sounds: Bavarians don’t down a quick pint before heading to the office every morning. It originates in Frühschoppen - a local tradition of meeting for a drink late in the morning on Sundays and holidays. According to Bavarian custom, the sausages cannot be eaten after 12 noon, because no preservatives are used and they are made fresh every day. Therefore those who wish to wash their sausages down with a beer must get supping before that time. The local saying is that the sausages must not be allowed to hear the church bells chime noon.

Beautiful, Nerdy. Today has certainly been a study in contrast. Ugly brutality in Texas and beer and Pretzels in Bavaria. What a world!

The AKP has polled worse than it ever feared and lost its majority. President Erdogan will be unable to change the constitution and extend his powers.

It’s a stark contrast with the HDP, which gambled to run as a single party for the first time, hoping to cross the 10% threshold. It paid off, gaining a significant voice for the Kurdish minority on the national stage.

It succeeded by appealing beyond the Kurds, drawing in leftists and staunch Erdogan opponents with its message of equality, gay rights and environmental concerns.

This could be the start of a new political era here; a major setback for a president who has polarised this nation.

I loved a “Bavarian breakfast” when I visited Munich too many years ago. Don’t recall beer being on the menu, but all kinds of wursts certainly were. Used to stash the leftovers in a drawer in my hotel room for lunch.

Does anyone really give a s**t if POB is holding a drink his hosts have given him? Don’t we see how every single person responds to him, in every one of these photos, how he’s smiling in every single one, being somehow able to pull that out of himself after yesterday’s – ONLY YESTERDAY’S – service for Beau Biden…? He does it because he can be absolutely wherever he is, with 100% authenticity. Would that we could all do that, all the time… This is an extraordinary man, really…

Remember early on, how Angela Merkl was not so keen on PBO, was cold and unwilling to give him credence. Now, I see her face is just sincerely admiring him, she listens, she enjoys and respects him. She has come to know him as the ultimate world leader, setting the tone and the pace in all areas of worldwide concern. With a genuine heart and an intellect beyond measure. He is our President, and we are so so so so pround of that! <3 Goodnight all. <3

*proud Weird how the comment box collapsed while I was typing, then I had to toggle and mess with it to get it to full size so I could post. What is that, Mercury retrograde again? Getting pretty tired of Mercury’s tricks, this has been a very weird cycle. Stations Direct on 6/11, so hang in there, just stay calm and keep breathing. This, too, Shall Pass! <3
