A couple of threads back several TOD-bots were talking about wouldn’t it be great if Nancy Pelosi could become Speaker again. Well, I figured out that with 188 Democrats in the House, she would only need 30 Republicans to cross over to our side to vote her in. Pretty slim chance I thought.
And then Nena posted links to 2 articles in the last thread that may show some sign that it could be possible. This article, http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/pete-king-boehner-debt-ceiling?utm_content=bufferc5a2d&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer is Republican Pete King calling for Boehner to raise the debt ceiling. And this article, http://thehill.com/policy/finance/256504-ex-im-backers-move-to-force-vote is about 2 Republicans who got 218 House members, both Democrat and Republican, to sign onto a discharge petition to bring the Export-Import Bank reauthorization up for a vote, going around the usual committee process.
And I read in another article about something called the Tuesday Caucus, made up of moderate leaning Republicans. I can’t seem to find anything on line about this group or how many members are in it. But certainly these moderate Republicans are disgusted with what is happening to their party, and possibly they might team up with Democrats to elect Nancy Pelosi, just so everyone can get back to governing, like they haven’t done for several years now. Maybe?

The indictment of Barbara Byrd-Bennett—Mayor Rahm’s front woman at CPS
Posted By Ben Joravsky on 10.08.15 at 05:15 PM

Appropriately, Mayor Emanuel’s name isn’t mentioned in the 43-page indictment on bribery charges handed down today by the feds against Barbara Byrd-Bennett, who was hired by the mayor to run the Chicago Public Schools.

It’s appropriate because, as near as I can tell, the main reason Emanuel hired Byrd-Bennett was to be the sympathetic public face—thus shielding him for blame—for the cuts, closings, testing policies, and other bad things he was doing to the schools.

Not the least of which was hiring Byrd-Bennett to run them.

I urge every citizen of Chicago to read the indictment. But in case you’re too busy, I’ll give you a few lovely details.

For almost a year before Mayor Emanuel hired her as CEO—I did mention that she was hired by Rahm, right?—Byrd-Bennett was a “paid consultant” for the Supes Academy.

That’s an educational consulting firm in Wilmette run by two guys named Gary Solomon and Thomas Vranas.

The central accusation is that Byrd-Bennett used her influence at CPS to squeeze about $24 million worth of contracts from a broke-ass public school system whose leaders—Mayor Emanuel chief among them—constantly told the public it didn’t have a dime to spare.

So stop asking for more money for things like toilet paper and janitors and books.

And you wonder why so many Chicagoans don’t believe CPS is really broke.

          A couple of things, IMO:
Corporate-controlled media doesn’t want too much truth leaking out, so their ’employees’ need to toe the line to keep their paychecks and show gigs.

Whoopi has a weird apologist thing going on. She defended Mel Gibson after he was recorded telling his girlfriend she’d be ‘raped by a pack of n*****s’, and she defended Justin Bieber’s n-word use as well. Maybe it’s more toeing the party line to stay in line and get paid.

When you hear Bernie or Hillary or anybody else for that matter, promising to punish the Bank Executives that caused the 2008 crash, keep in mind that if it were possible to do so it would already have been done.
The Bad Guys emoprogs refer to Mostly cannot be indicted, much less prosecuted and convicted because as egregious as their behavior is and was, it generally is not illegal.

Rich people write the laws and have platoons of attorneys who help them thread the needle.

Politicians routinely promise to go after Bigshots they know full well they have very little chance of ever bringing to justice. Meanwhile it makes whoever is holding office seem like they’ve fallen down on the job. In other words the politicians doing this are taking “cheap shots.”

Of course, when I hear any criticism of POTUS, I am unhappy and uncool.

Judge rejects House, Senate redistricting maps, recommends challengers’ plan

    BY MARY ELLEN KLAS
    Herald/Times Tallahassee Bureau

Circuit Court Judge Terry Lewis on Friday rejected the Florida Legislature’s third attempt at redrawing its congressional districts and recommended a map proposed by the challengers — including a redrawn configuration of two Miami-Dade County districts — to the Florida Supreme Court for its final review.

Lewis adopted the bulk of the map approved by lawmakers in the northern and central portions of the state but specifically rejected the proposed boundaries for District 26 in Miami-Dade, now held by Republican Congressman Carlos Curbelo.

The challengers, a coalition of League of Women Voters and Common Cause of Florida and a group of Democrat-leaning individuals, agreed with the Legislature’s configuration of 20 of the 27 districts proposed in a staff-drawn base map but asked the court to adopt their changes to the remaining districts. Lewis agreed.

“The Legislature has thus not met its burden of justifying the proposed versions of Districts 20 through 27,” he wrote in a 19-page ruling. He said that a map drawn by the challengers “best complies with the directions” set out by the Florida Supreme Court in July and “I therefore recommend its adoption.”

I smiled at the phrasing ‘clearly a political posturing, part of the iClinton6 product roll out’ even though it’s not funny her posturing is so accepted/known by everyone.

    ==================================================

Angelina Burnett: Klein and I are of one mind on this. I don’t understand this sort of positioning. I suspect anyone who even knows what the TPP is knows Clinton was an early negotiator/supporter of it. Are all the union bosses she needs at her back really so willing to buy into kayfabe here? The whole thing baffles me.

    ……………………………….

Al Giordino: I see this as about Tuesday’s debate. She was going to be hammered by Sanders and O’Malley on it and needed to neutralize that. Interestingly, not even she has read the final version of the trade agreement, so it’s clearly a political posturing, part of the iClinton 6 product roll out. Of course she is just as capable of turning around later and saying, “you know, now that I’ve read it, I support it!” But what she wants to avoid is a bad debate.
………………….. in the 08 campaign both Obama and Clinton pledged to rewrite NAFTA, and technically TPP *is* a rewrite of NAFTA - …….
    ………………………………….
So she even had some wiggle room to support TPP as her way of having kept the 08 pledge. But it’s clear she doesn’t have core values on this entire question, that’s what bugs people on both sides of TPP.

First let me say I utterly detest the headline of this piece, and I reject the notion that Democrats are equally to blame for the Republican madness we’re all suffering from now. But digging into the article, there are some very good points.

‘ Republican extremism should have been the most fundamental campaign issue for every Democratic candidate for every elected office since about 1991. Every silly thing said by Michele Bachmann, say, or Louie Gohmert should have been hung around the neck of Republican politicians until they choked themselves denying it. (I once spoke to a Democratic candidate who was running against Bachmann who said to me, “Well, I’m not going to call her crazy.” She lost badly.) The mockery and ridicule should have been loud and relentless. It was the only way to break both the grip of the prion disease, and break through the solid bubble of disinformation, anti-facts, and utter bullshit that has sustained the Republican base over the past 25 years. Instead, and it’s hard to fault them entirely for their sense of responsibility, the Democrats chose largely to ignore the dance of the madmen at center stage and fulfill some sense of obligation to the country. (In no way does this excuse the far too many Democrats who chose to join in the dance, however briefly. Hi, Joe Lieberman!) Now, as we saw on Thursday, it well may be too late. The national legislature has been broken by crazy people. ‘

    http://www.esquire.com/news-politics/politics/news/a38715/democratic-party-blame-crazy-republicans/

Democratic candidates who run from President Obama’s record need to be held accountable as well. The Republicans have provided a target-rich political environment for decades- why run against a supremely successful and charismatic president of your own party? When he’s not even running? Dem leadership, if you’re reading this (and you should be reading TOD religiously) it’s time to expose the crazy at the center of Republicanism’s stinky heart.

Thank you so much, Susanne Holland for sharing this piece by Charlie Pierce. Unlike you, I have absolutely no qualms with the headline because I truly believe that Democrats are implicated for failing to aggressively expose GOP craziness. I also think this statement by Pierce goes to heart of the matter:

“The primary obligation of each of the two parties to their members is to win elections. The primary obligation of each of the two parties to the country is to govern it. Therefore, given all this, if one of the parties goes as thoroughly, deeply, banana-sandwich loony as the present Republican Party has, the other party has a definitive obligation to the Republic to beat the crazy out of it so the country can get moving again. This is a duty in which the Democratic Party has failed utterly.

Republican extremism should have been the most fundamental campaign issue for every Democratic candidate for every elected office since about 1991. The national legislature has been broken by crazy people.”

I agree with you- the Dems have not made good use of the many opportunities to excoriate Republicans for their crazy talk and acts. I also love the paragraph you quoted! But it’s not okay for Republicans and their voters and financiers to be let off the hook for this mess. Yes, we could have done a much better job of holding them responsible, but what they’re responsible for is their own mucky mess.

Sherijr, I don’t know how Ben Carson gained the reputation of being an accomplished surgeon. What seems self evident to me, based on his repeated crazy utterances, is that Ben Carson has lost his marbles. If I were a member of his family, or his friend, I would be begging him to go see a shrink. By the way I am glad you hang up on the “Ben Carson robo Call….” I do the same thing all the time when I get these insane calls.

Nath - I have no understanding as to why Ben Carson thinks he has a hope of winning the GOP nomination. His brain is detached from his physical self.

Just watched Air Force1 actually take off, /gulp/ had to catch my breath and hold my stomach just like when I am flying! I wasn’t planning on seeing the plane as it lifted off the ground as that is one of three flight points when I’m most nervous.
