Thanks to you and Chips, NW, for these glorious photos and the video of this event. It’s one of my annual favorites held at the White House, and I missed it earlier. #PromisesKeptByThisPresident

On Chris Hayes’ show tonight, Colin Powell’s former Chief of Staff, retired Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, responded to Cheney’s comments today - that “lots of” people in the country think he did a good job - by saying the “lots of” was “the 11 percent in this country who are certifiably ‘nuts.'” Not sure I agree with his description or where he got the 11 percent, but otherwise it works for me. This is all fallout from G.H.W.B’s new biography. Of course, W claims he doesn’t agree with dear old dad’s truthiness, and Jeb follows suit. One lies and the other swears to it, as the saying goes. Those two “boys” must have been fun to raise. Ugh.

Back to thinking about the wonderful President Obama, I go!

I love the term … indicates their future is expected to be better than the present or recent past, because they themselves will participate in making it better. #Hope #Change #ThanksObama

One thing PBO said to them today is that he made some promises to them before he was elected and he has kept them all. And we know this because we’ve seen him fulfill promise after promise to them year after year.

One of the young people asked him how they can be assured that what PBO has started will continue with a new President. He said that he’s done his best to institutionalize a lot of the change and that the successes should encourage the next POTUS to continue. And then he said a lot of it is up to them to keep insisting that they are heard. I really, really dearly hope that all this work to bring respect and progress to Native Americans and their land somehow continues. PBO’s personal commitment has meant so much to so many.

Now I want to cry. But crying will come in a year or more! For now, I’ll savor your “report,” and thank our lucky stars - again - he’s President.

              November 6, 2025 at 12:37 am

Oh, yes, we will have our long period of crying. But I see a new PBO these days. He’s lighter and more open, more nimble, less burdened. He always seems to be having a good time. And when we reflect on the unending hell he has endured since Day One, it makes sense. I think we’re going to enjoy the hell out of him and FLOTUS in the years to come. Yes we can. Heh.

My friend in Florida has considered moving to another part of the country, but can’t decide where, among the many choices … she recently said, “Maybe I’ll find out where Obama’s going, and I’ll move there, so I can see what he does next.” :)

Elizabeth Warren has proposed a plan to give a one-time bump to recipients of Social Security, veterans, etc., next year, because there was no cost-of-living-adjustment. Wants to take the money from a tax loophole benefiting corporate CEOs (WTF?), thus not adding to the deficit. She’s organizing people to get behind it at elizabethwarren.com. Just saw her on Chris Hayes’ show.

    Go, girl!

A 1% automatic transaction tax on stocks trading world over will yield billions for governments world over. It’s an easy taxation since govt doesn’t have to chase the money.

We have been on pins and needles today as our daughter travels to the Greek Island of Lesvos with a 50# bag of medical supplies for public health assistance with the Syrian refugees. Here is the note she sent this morning on the way to the airport:

Many of you know that I am leaving Seattle today to do short term refugee relief work in Lesvos, Greece and many of you have asked how you can help. The group I am going with is the Seattle-based Salaam Cultural Museum. You can read more about their work here: https://salaamculturalmuseum.wordpress.com. Click on the ‘blog’ link to read updates from the trips. The best way to offer help is to make a donation directly to the organization via their website. They are trying to source needed goods locally as much as possible. Please pass this message along to others who are looking for a way to get involved.

Hi JF. I did 108 bucks for medical mission fund.

A feedback. The donation page lists all countries but wont accept the donation unless you select one of the US states listed there. I selcted OR :) but it is a requirement that should not have been there since they are making an international appeal. Please pass this on to your daughter unit. I wish her & her team a safe trip and return.

In the country he rules with absolute power, Pope Francis has chosen for himself one of the worst views.

The pontiff’s small suite of rooms in the Vatican’s Santa Marta guest house looks out beyond the enclave’s walls on to a small street and the rear of a petrol station.

By contrast, a retired Italian cardinal living nearby enjoys a top-floor apartment in an old building with a view out over the Vatican itself.

Documents leaked to reporters allege that a charitable foundation paid €200,000 (£140,000) to renovate the apartment that Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone is using as his retirement home.

The leaks reveal that the Pope has been unable to persuade many of his Vatican officials to follow his own frugal example.

The documents themselves come from the private records of a reform commission set up by the Pope four months into his reign in 2013.

It’s really killing church leaders that the pope actually practices the humility that the church preaches. I’ll bet Pope Francis gets real pleasure looking out over that street and seeing ordinary people. When you don’t have an enormous ego to indulge, life gets a lot simpler.

On another topic of great concern, at least to me. DWS!!!! Is there ANYTHING we can do to (help) get rid of her? This bothers me a lot and I spend too much time dwelling on it sometimes. Tonight as I watched Rachel do the interview with the new young and energetic SC Dem chair, it hit me again. Every thing he said was so on target-building a base of people to run, developing a WINNING strategy for the entire southeast and on and on. We MUST get rid of her! HOW!

I’ve sent two or three emails to the WH about this and have made at least two calls and left same message for the President. I will send another email tonight. If I had to pick one thing that I so disagree with PO about, do not understand his thinking on keeping her, it is this. I just do not get it. Am so frustrated!!!!!!!!

You’re right about this last part. We are “hoping” we are able to ‘win out’ the rest of our games. I know, never know what can happen, but we ‘should’ do that. That would give us an 8-4 record. Butch will get us there……..just takes time as you know.

Was at work when I read a few threads back about concern Ted Cruz and his under the radar campaign which might help him to win. BIG Question: I thought only persons BORN in America could be president or does that only apply to the black guy? Someone should challenge this in the courts since the constitution seems to be selectively applied when it suits some folks

    • 80 FoxfireTX
      November 6, 2025 at 12:24 am

Anjo, without taking the time to check (late) I believe the Constitution reads “natural citizens”, not born in the US. This came up in the 2008 campaign because McCain was born in Panama. As long as one of the parents is a citizen, thechildren likewise receive citizenship status. In short, it wouldn’t have mattered if PBO was born in Kenya, he would have been a natural citizen as a result of his mother’s citizenship. It was incorrectly made an issue by the birthers, but would not have made any difference unless somehow PBO’s mother or PBO himself rejected his citizenship status.

Sportswear company Adidas has announced that it will offer free design resources to US high schools that agree to drop Native American mascots.

The company has also offered to help pay for the costs of the changes.

The pledge comes on the same day President Barack Obama is hosting leaders from the 567 federally recognised native tribes in Washington.

The use of Native American mascots and symbolism in sports is at the centre of a national debate in the US.

Critics say such imagery is racially offensive and it exploits native people through stereotypes.

According to advocacy groups, there are approximately 2,000 schools in the US that have Native American mascots.

Over the past two years around 12 have dropped the mascots and about 20 are considering a change.

Oh look! A linkage between climate change and human activity!! Who knew!?
    http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/news/explaining-extreme-events-2014

Human activities, such as greenhouse gas emissions and land use, influenced specific extreme weather and climate events in 2014, including tropical cyclones in the central Pacific, heavy rainfall in Europe, drought in East Africa, and stifling heat waves in Australia, Asia, and South America, according to a new report released today. The report, Explaining Extreme Events of 2014 from a Climate Perspective (link is external) published by the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, addresses the natural and human causes of individual extreme events from around the world, including Antarctica, in 2014. NOAA scientists served as four of the five lead editors on the report.

“For the past four years, this report has shown that human activities are influencing specific extreme weather and climate events around the world,? said Thomas R. Karl, LHD, director of NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information. “In the 79 papers that have been published through the annual report over the past four years, over half of these papers show a linkage to human-caused climate change.
