Chips! Trust me to post a big, long, thing on the last post seconds before you opened this one! I hope the holiday season chez Chips and Dannystix will be fabulous, merry, peaceful, and healthy. Well, maybe not healthy if it interferes with the other three. On my second day of Christmas vacation I am sitting here in my pj’s, counting the lovely days that I will not have to put on make up, get dressed up, get dressed, for that matter. This is why I can never retire.
Worked for 34 years in offices and 8 or 9 years freelancing at home, so, even if somebody would make me the Goddess of Retirementland, it couldn’t be any better than it is already!
I retired early at 52, picked up my retirement allotment, shopped for two years (Ha!), then freelanced, until I picked up Social Security. Never regretted my decision for one minute.
JO’B, retirement has been the best time of my life. Retired at 57 and never looked back. I love the fact that I’m not driven by someone else’s rules, expectations and schedules. I do what I want to do when I want to do it. Had to move to a low-priced area to make this all happen.
Oh, I feel ya, jackieG. I like to say I’m finally “thinking my own thoughts, instead of somebody else’s thoughts.” Ha! And I look so much better out from under those fluorescent lights, even if it’s only in my own mind.
Seriously, I am also not the type that has to join every club, have every day “scheduled,” fighting boredom, sorry I retired, etc. How can anybody feel that way and try to say they still have an imagination? (I consider myself lucky to feel that way, of course, and sounds like you’re at the same point!)
JO’B, I think the key to successful retirement is being able to enjoy your own company, live in the moment so that you can take each day for what it is, and give yourself affirmation when you need it. I can’t think of a single day when I’ve been bored because life is so damned interesting, even when you don’t get a paycheck for living it. So, yes, you and I have a lot of things in common, from the same name to a love of licorice and a knack for retirement.
Sorry! I thought I did!! It’s called “The Half Has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism” by Edward Baptist. The title sounds a bit academic, but believe me, it is engrossing. In fact, I am listening to it through Audible but I mostly get to listen to it while driving back and forth to work. I’ve actually purchased the hardcover so I can reread it and really concentrate on it. I bought it for my principal and my son and daughter for Christmas.

They break every rule. I read about that today. I warned not long after PBO was elected that cable media had turned into entertainment to the highest degree and that journalism was dead. It has all come to fruition. I wish I could predict the lottery numbers as well as I did this. :)
I believe it was the writer, Gore Vidal, who said that USA stood for the United States of Amnesia. Any one who claims that we are living in the most scary times in history, but especially with regard to the West Asia (the Middle East), is suffering from historical amnesia. Apparently they’ve forgotten all the turmoil of the 1960s-1990s in the region. They’ve forgotten the war between Iraq and Iran, which killed millions of people. They’ve forgotten the Israeli and Syrian invasion of Lebanon and the consequent brutal Civil /Religious war in Lebanon that lasted more than a decade. They’ve forgotten the genocide of Palestinian refugees by the Israeli backed Christian militias in Lebanon. They’ve forgotten all the kidnappings and hijacking of Airlines.
And it was not just West Asia. Southeast Asia was in turmoil: the Vietnam War, Pol Pot massive genocide in Cambodia and the genocides in Indonesia and Burma. Then there were wars in Africa: Congo, Ghana, Nigeria, Angola, Namibia, South Africa, Mozambique, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia/Eritrea and the horrific genocide in Rwanda.
The Americas were not immune from turmoil. An American President was assassinated. His brother, a former Attorney General of the United States, who was running for President, met a similar fate. Civil Rights Leaders, including the advocate of non-violence, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., were assassinated. Black churches in the South were routinely bombed or set on fire. In places like Oxford, Mississippi, and Little Rock, Arkansas, White supremacists unleashed violent rebellions to maintain racial segregation, prompting Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy to use federal troops to put down the rebellions. Cities with large black populations, in response to centuries of continued oppression, erupted in massive rebellions, which President Johnson to mobilize National Guards to quell the rebellions. And then, of course, were the horrific violence and constant coups in Central and South America in countries like El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Argentina, Columbia, Brazil, Chile, etc. that resulted in millions of people being killed/disappeared.
Clearly then, people who claim that the world today is in more turmoil than ever before are either propagandists or they are afflicted with historical amnesia/ignorance of history.
In his defense…beautiful women all over the stage…must have been really confusing on what pretty head to put a crown. Why do we still have these stupid things, anyway?

You are so right, Gazelle. I hope that when my little granddaughter and Chelsea’s children are grown, they can look back and wonder what was wrong with us all to tolerate so much hatred. In the NPR interview, PBO said he sees so much acceptance of diversity from his daughters and their friends that it makes him optimistic about the future. We have to hold on to that.

The GOPers are Never shy of their motives, goals and intentions. They were not happy with the US News Media. So they started with the Charge of The Liberal Media. They lost elections for 40 years, so they started the Southern Strategy. They built the infrastructure. They continued with persistence, Never accepting any settled Tradition, Law or Cultural Advancement. They originate the debates to their Own talking points. Their dastardly bad ideas become mainstreamed, while Dems, Progressives, Liberal, etc are negotiating away their core principles. Today, they have Trump publicly using Racist, Bigoted and Divisive terms to gain political popularity.
They break every rule. Shut down the Fed Gov’t 2X in the 1990s, 4X since since 2009, they have shut the Fed Down, caused a Credit Down Grade, Deny many the right to Vote, etc……..then win elections in 2010 and 2014 with the help of the US Mass Media carrying their propaganda while Dumbing Down the Citizenry.
In USA, GOPers continue to get what they want.

I read about that today. I warned not long after PBO was elected that cable media had turned into entertainment to the highest degree and that journalism was dead. It has all come to fruition. I wish I could predict the lottery numbers as well as I did this. :)
I believe it was the writer, Gore Vidal, who said that USA stood for the United States of Amnesia. Any one who claims that we are living in the most scary times in history, but especially with regard to the West Asia (the Middle East), is suffering from historical amnesia. Apparently they’ve forgotten all the turmoil of the 1960s-1990s in the region. They’ve forgotten the war between Iraq and Iran, which killed millions of people. They’ve forgotten the Israeli and Syrian invasion of Lebanon and the consequent brutal Civil /Religious war in Lebanon that lasted more than a decade. They’ve forgotten the genocide of Palestinian refugees by the Israeli backed Christian militias in Lebanon. They’ve forgotten all the kidnappings and hijacking of Airlines.
And it was not just West Asia. Southeast Asia was in turmoil: the Vietnam War, Pol Pot massive genocide in Cambodia and the genocides in Indonesia and Burma. Then there were wars in Africa: Congo, Ghana, Nigeria, Angola, Namibia, South Africa, Mozambique, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia/Eritrea and the horrific genocide in Rwanda.
The Americas were not immune from turmoil. An American President was assassinated. His brother, a former Attorney General of the United States, who was running for President, met a similar fate. Civil Rights Leaders, including the advocate of non-violence, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., were assassinated. Black churches in the South were routinely bombed or set on fire. In places like Oxford, Mississippi, and Little Rock, Arkansas, White supremacists unleashed violent rebellions to maintain racial segregation, prompting Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy to use federal troops to put down the rebellions. Cities with large black populations, in response to centuries of continued oppression, erupted in massive rebellions, which President Johnson to mobilize National Guards to quell the rebellions. And then, of course, were the horrific violence and constant coups in Central and South America in countries like El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Argentina, Columbia, Brazil, Chile, etc. that resulted in millions of people being killed/disappeared.
Clearly then, people who claim that the world today is in more turmoil than ever before are either propagandists or they are afflicted with historical amnesia/ignorance of history.
