        Good Morning, JackieG.

Getting ready to run some last (I hope) errands before the predicted storm comes through later today. But all in all, plans are going well.

I trust that your holiday is going as well as you would hope.

When all is said and done, remember the reason for the season.

Sometimes that’s difficult to do when you’re running around trying to get last minute things and (sigh) cleaning bathrooms, but I do try to put it all in the right perspective. Among other things Christmas is the one time of year when everythings pauses, if only for a few hours. I love to take a walk early on Christmas morning and enjoy the absolute quiet-no cars on the road, empty store parking lots, just peace everywhere.

Understandable…when you’re trying to do the things that will make the day special for everyone, it can be hectic. But when it all comes together, the smiles and satisfaction lets you know that all your efforts have been appreciated and that paused time… the peace… is one of the blessing of the day.

Morning all. I love the way our President’s visits to Hawaii seem to wash away all his stress. It’s truly his “home” land. I wish we could all have a rejuvenating place to go, preferably somewhere warm and sunny with blue skies and white sands.

and this picture?! For months I’ve been fantasizing about a major move in 2017 should the American apocalypse occur… Africa, Australia, IIIrreeland? :) Could Hawaii be the answer? American without all that ‘Murica? Sure looks like it. Phew, now to win that lottery with that ticket I never buy.

Great response, Pf. I simply don’t respond to fear statements and resent it when people think it is a motivator. Nobody is taking anything for granted in 2016. We know we have to work hard because everything is at stake, especially with the Supreme Court vacancies likely to occur. If Hillary is the candidate I will go all in, whether or not I personally like her. This whole election may come down to a decision between democracy and fascism and I know what side I’ on.

I love love love your response. Also never thought about it just that way. Its true isn’t it. I am sure that the Obama era has made this even more true. People that consider themselves Democrats are realizing this and adjusting their process accordingly. Cannot be a better result for the “respect, empower, include” era. I love our President and the way he thinks.

Two things happened recently. Our county Dem co-chair was verbally accosted by a Trump -like GOPer that told her that there would soon be no Dems in any office in the county. They would be wiped out in the next election and good riddance. You have to realize that there is only one Dem in office now as the recorder. After she told me about her bad conversation I turned the subject to positives and we spoke about some ideas I had on strengthening our connections as Dems (right out of Obama for America experiences) and she was a debbie downer as usual. However (and this is the change), she wrote me an email apologizing for her negativity. NEVER happened before and negativity is the meme of the local Dems.

Next, in the town that is the county seat a Dem was just elected as treasurer/clerk. He won by exactly ONE vote. Talked with him and now he BELIEVES in GOTV (get out the vote efforts) and I have not been able to get him or any other local Dem to do that. He told me he was way down in the polls at the election time, had already done the requisite voter contact but went back right before the election (dah!) and contacted voters to be sure they came out. Maybe he will lead the local Dems into a new awakening along with the co-chair. They have been so conflicted about the President, basically disowning him with the voters. Won’t it be fitting when they begin to adopt all of his approaches after he is out of office. I think the President would want that outcome since he understands how significant that is to the future.

Good is always welcome, Catrst, and this is *good* news. I don’t know why, but I feel that, post 2016, the Obamas are going to make an even greater impact re citizens becoming even more aware that they need to exercise their voting rights.

Extra sleepy this morning because I stayed up half the night watching the end of ‘Making a Murderer’ - has anyone seen it? It’s a 10 part documentary on the framing of Steven Avery, first for rape and then for murder. Very festive viewing. Absolutely blew me away - my gawd, if you’re poor in this world you don’t stand a chance, the authorities will destroy you if they so choose, and there’s not a damn thing you can do about it.

This is such a cheery comment in Christmas week :???:

Chips, I binge-watched that a couple of days ago and can’t stop thinking about it. Another brutal, stunning, horrific account of our criminal justice system. So many things went wrong. It’s like part The Jinx and part Rectify, and you’re left with an empty, horrible feeling for the thousands of people who are abused and betrayed by the system. OMG.

      • December 23, 2025 at 8:58 am

Oh Meta, you said it all, that’s exactly how I felt after watching it: empty. What happened Steven was horrific enough, but the treatment of Brendan would leave you in tears. I don’t want to say too much in case anyone here wants to watch it, but it would truly leave you in despair.

Chips and Meta I taped all of The Knick this season and was planning to get to it eventually, but when I heard that it was PBO’s favorite I was shocked.
Needless to say, I will get to it and binge watch it as soon as I can. Your comments are depressing, however.

      December 23, 2025 at 9:05 am

Wow, you are really depressing me this morning, Chips. I guess we all grow up knowing this to be true, but we try to convince ourselves that there still might be justice in the world.

      • December 23, 2025 at 9:09 am

Between Sue beating up on Santa, and me bringing this depressing stuff here, it has NOT been a cheery TOD morning, Jackie! I’m almost reluctant to recommend watching the series, as Meta said it would really leave you feeling empty. Whether it’s healthcare or justice from the legal system, it’s soul-destroying that being poor leaves you way behind.

        • 47 meta
          December 23, 2025 at 9:12 am

It’s so compelling though, the way the story is told. I just couldn’t stop watching. All those details about their daily lives, the microscopic view of their despair. And the hope of their lawyers. They made so much sense. But the claustrophobia of that small town…….YIKES.

          December 23, 2025 at 11:59 am

If watching how the poor is treated imaging living it? I grew up poor but compared to the poor and working poor (is there a difference?) it was a cake walk. I remember my mom dealing with social workers and how they put you in a catch 22 just to get help for rent or food. I remember thinking I never ever want to be in this situation, a single mom, poor, with several kids to have to feed, clothe and them having to go without the things that most other kids have. I was thankful to have a roof over my head and food on Thanksgiving or Xmas.

I heard on NPR this morning that there was more demand for food than ever before and it wasn’t due to being homeless if was from the “working poor”. That in making decisions about whether to pay rent, utilities, they forgo a meal. That sometimes making the minimum wage or slightly higher made them ineligible for food stamps or help for rent and utilities. When we were poor, rent was no where as high as it was until Prop 13 in SoCal that sent rents sky high ( I was an adult then). We did not have things like are not really luxuries like cell phones, the Internet, and computers that need to be in every home these days if you live too far from a library. Transportation was cheaper than it is today and gas was around .25 to .35 cents a gallon when I was a kid. Jobs weren’t sent to China and other foreign countries like they are today and waitresses were paid full minimum wage PLUS tips and made good money until Ronald Ratgun and the GOP congress included tips as part of wages. Cities and Counties were not funded on the backs of poor neighborhoods like they are today.

If really pisses me off when the Trump followers long for yesterday and think that this candidate is going to bring back the 1950’s & 1960’s when “murica” was great…..how everyone was so happy back then, yet none of these folks will reduce Corporate pay and tax breaks for the wealthy, or bring manufacturing and other jobs back or demand that people have affordable healthcare and are paid a living wage to support their families.

2015 in Review (Part 1): Most Improved, Most Underrated, Best/Worst Finales, CGI, New Characters and More
Like an exceedingly polite party guest, 2015 is already tipping its fancy hat and heading for the exit — even if, from a TV-watching perspective, none of us are exactly ready to say “goodbye.”

But while the next 10 days might find you desperately trying to burn through your DVR or catch up on your binge-watching — the time has nevertheless arrived to reflect on the shows and actors who made us gasp, chortle and shake our heads in dismay over the last 12 months.

Who was utterly underrated? Which shows improved the most in the last year? Which cancellation stung the hardest? What were the most sublime guilty pleasures?

Part 1 of our 2015 in Review answers all those questions and more — including picks for Best and Worst Finales, Best Ensemble, Best Monologue, Best Costumes and Wackiest Plot Twist. (And lest we be accused of neglecting our four-legged friends, we’ve also included Best Performance by an Animal!)

Sandra Bland’s family rejects prosecutor’s offer to meet about probe into jail death

A day after a grand jury decided against indicting anyone in the jail death of Sandra Bland, a special prosecutor denied accusations of a cover-up from family of the Naperville woman and said he was “begging to meet with them” to discuss the investigation.

But the family said the prosecutor’s appeal has come too late.

“The family does not believe him or anything he says,” said Cannon Lambert, an attorney representing the family. “You would think that before they announced the grand jury findings, they would have reached out to the Bland family. The family expected the disappointing news because of the way things were postured.”

Bland died July 13 in the Waller County Jail near Houston, three days after she was arrested during a traffic stop that turned confrontational. She was found hanging from a plastic trash bag, and her death was ruled a suicide. Family members have questioned the arresting officers actions and have said they don’t believe Bland killed herself.

Darrell Jordan, one of five special prosecutors overseeing the case, said a grand jury met on three occasions — for 11 hours on Monday — before announcing that no felony crimes were committed by the sheriff’s office or jailers in the treatment of Bland.

    ……………………

Jordan said he would like to meet with family members and “answer every question they have.”

“I’m begging to meet with them,” he said by phone Tuesday. “Their attorney has my personal cellphone number. Anytime the family is ready to talk, we can. Early morning, midnight, please call me.”

But Lambert said the family is not “confident” it would be told the truth. And he said having the grand jury continue meeting was just a stalling tactic.

But…I’ve been told…it’s just one or two bad apples…

that’s what we’re told, over and over and over…

    …………..

For 55 officers involved in fatal shootings this year, it wasn’t their first time

By Keith L. AlexanderThe Washington Post

More than 50 police officers involved in fatal shootings this year had previously fired their guns in deadly on-duty shootings, according to a Washington Post investigation.

For a handful of officers, it was their third fatal shooting. For one officer, it was his fourth.

The findings concerned many law enforcement experts, who said most officers never fire their weapons on the job. The analysis also exposed another gap in the federal government’s oversight of fatal police shootings nationwide: the absence of a system for tracking multiple shootings by individual officers.

The 55 officers were identified as part of a Washington Post project tracking all fatal shootings by police in the line of duty in 2015. It is the first nationwide attempt to determine whether fatal police shootings are isolated events in an officer’s career or whether some officers repeatedly fire their weapons in deadly encounters.

The Washington Post also found that another 45 officers had previously been involved in non-fatal shootings.

“It’s a national embarrassment. We don’t even know how many times cops pull their triggers,” said Geoffrey Alpert, a criminologist at the University of South Carolina.

I am hearing MORE people are stepping up when bigots go out of their way to insult people who appear to be muslim. They tell them to ignore those ignorant people and that they are good americans. If I am ever in a situation where someone tells someone to “go back home and fight for their own country”, I’ll tell them, THEY ARE in their own country….why don’t you go back to the country their relatives came from who stole it from the Indians? This is America, the land that accepts ALL who want to be FREE!

Today’s entry in my recurring series:

    Good News in the News
Virginia’s AG Mark Herring used his authority to restrict concealed-carry permits from 25 other states that he considers to be insufficiently rigorous in granting these licenses. In other words, if you can hide a gun on your person in Texas, it doesn’t mean you can do that in VA.

This matters because while small, it is a step in the right direction.
POTUS is going to place anybody on the No Fly List on a No Gun For You List. Another positive step.

We may be unable to bring large legislative action on guns through Congress right now, but we can take as many small measures as possible until American common sense overtakes the NRA.

Thank you ALG for pretending that “The President” refers to Bill C.
Thank you to ALG and the DNC for so successfully “distancing” yourselves from the Greatness that is President Obama that you insured the continuing reign of the GOP in Kentucky.

The collapse of Kentucky is a national disgrace and it was far from the only state that the DNC threw into Republican hands.

How can anybody pretend that the DNC can deliver better results for democrats this time?

    My “Feel Good” story…
    http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2015/12/22/sweet-alice-holds-first-toy-giveaway-for-seniors/

WATTS (CBSLA.com) — Community activist Sweet Alice Harris is known for her generous heart for children from low-income families in Los Angeles.

In her annual Christmas toy drive last week, she gave away more than 400 bicycles.

On Tuesday, she expanded her Christmas cheer to seniors at AltaMed, a non-profit health center in Watts, in the first toy drive of its kind – the Sweet Alice Senior Citizen Santa Toy Giveaway.

About 200 seniors enjoyed a holiday meal and received toys so they can give them away to their grandchildren or other young loved ones in their lives.

“Let the grandmothers do something. And this was AltaMed’s idea,” said Sweet Alice.

“Sweet Alice will never turn down an opportunity to help more people in her community,” said Michelle Burton of AltaMed.

E * WC ‘morning’ to you, GxG! That’s a ‘sweet’ story; the smiles on the faces of the grandparents/aunts were themselves also smile inducing.

/waving/ Good W/E Coast morning to you my international sister :-)

Yes, you can’t help but smile, especially when you know that these elderly people are happy to have a gift to give to their little love one.

        VC, we are so blessed.

Yes we *are*! One of the things the rejuvenates me about both Thanksgiving and Christmas is that they remind me to be thankful for *my* life. [Right now as I write I’m pretending to do exercise…something I haven’t done for two+ weeks.

Okay, so if you just don’t want to do the structured exercise, then mop all of your floors and stairs - that should give you the equivalent of a good workout, then go back and wax the stairs by hand. (ducks/runs) <3

      Yes, I agree Nena.
This photo of a joyous healthy handsome man is a good explanation of how he won the country, Twice.

President Obama is what we hope for. A face we enjoy seeing on TV as much as possible.

Think of all the current candidates on both teams. Is there any one of that sorry bunch you’d choose to look at a single extra time?

About to leave to do my first long drive after my hip surgery and new hip. I live between Salem, Oregon and Lincoln City on the Coast and am driving to Seattle to spend Xmas with my family. We have had so much rain, mudslides and wind of late closing down highways etc that along with the traffic I am very nervous about it but am telling myself it will be well worth it. If I do not get online in the meantime, I want to wish you all a very Merry Xmas or Happy Holidays if it fits you better.

THIS is what they have produced.
    THIS is who they are.
    THIS is a damn shame.

And, I still say, juxtapose Muslim with Jew.
    America with Germany.
    2015 with 1937-38.

And, you will see that there’s not a damn bit of difference.

Except, there were no Nazi Soldiers telling the Jews that they’re not coming for them.

#IWillProtectYou: U.S. service members soothe scared Muslim girl
    8:11 p.m. EST December 22, 2025

U.S. service members are using the hashtag #IWillProtectYou to show support for a young Muslim girl who believed her family would be forced to flee following Donald Trump’s call to ban Muslims from the country.

Melissa Chance Yassini of Dallas, Texas, said she came home Dec. 8, to find her 8-year-old daughter packing her bags, Upworthy reported.

Yassini said her daughter was terrified after she heard Trump call for a ban on all Muslims entering the country following the San Bernardino massacre.

“Sad day in America when I have to comfort my 8-year-old child who heard that someone with yellow hair named Trump wanted to kick all Muslims out of America,” Yassini wrote in a Facebook post on Dec. 9.

In response to Trump’s words, Yassini said her daughter began “collecting all her favorite things in a bag in case the army “came to remove the family from their home.”

“She checked the locks on the door 3-4 times,” Yassini wrote. “This is terrorism. No child in America deserves to feel that way.”

The post quickly went viral, and it wasn’t long before Army veteran Kerri Peek saw it, according to Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

    Peek decided to take action.
“Post a picture of you in uniform with the hashtag‪#‎IWillProtectYou‬ to let these children know that we will not hurt them,” Peek wrote in a Dec. 17 Facebook post. “That they are safe here in America. That we will protect innocents as we always have.”

    Oh Carly!

“Fox News Sunday” host Chris Wallace grilled Republican presidential candidate and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina on Sunday on a comment she had made about a general.

Fiorina had said that Gen. Jack Keane “retired early” after a quarrel with President Obama. Keane himself appeared on Fox News and denied Fiorina’s claim.

On Sunday, Wallace asked her about it.

“But then there’s Keane who never served in the Obama administration, Wallace said. “Says he’s never spoken to Barack Obama. Weren’t you just flat wrong about that?”

“Well, I was wrong about Keane, yes. He is the exception that proves the rule,” Fiorina said. “I was certainly right about the fact that he is a member of the warrior class. I was naming the five warriors of our generation who have experience, four out of five I would argue were retired early out of the Obama administration because they said things the Obama administration didn’t particularly want to hear.”

I wonder why? Could it be the ACA making birth control part of healthcare that is included and not an additional cost? Whenever we have a Democratic president teen birth rates decline and when we have a GOP president, teen birth rates increase.
