Congrats, AMK! Late for my TOD fix this morning. Had to write all the people who came to our SOTU watch party and ask them to join the MLK day of service.
Judith, you are a treasure we hope to never lose. (((hugs))). Wonderful picture of your group.
Thanks, Roberta!
Judith thank you for this photo, and the ones you shared from you visit to the White House, and for your eloquent and moving letter after attending President Obama’s speech on gun sense and safety. What a privilege to see POTUS up close through your eyes, and what a joy to know that you were present. All good wishes on you and the mighty OFA_OR crew.
Thanks, Nancie!
I have the great honor to know people like yourself in my own state. Never have stopped working with all their heart for change. I would never have met them if it weren’t for OFA in all its iterations. Bless you for who you are and what you do.

Definitely. Munster.

Eddie Munster seems far more benevolent than Mr. Ryan. What a jerk Ryan is.

For those who may not be fans of The West Wing, Josiah Bartlett is the name of the President on the show. In one of his State of the Union addresses, he called for working on a cure for cancer. :-)
I miss this show sooooo much!
Correction: They took the line out about curing cancer from the SOTU on The West Wing. Some researchers came to a Big Block of Cheese Day event and told the Chief of Staff that it was possible, but due to some politics w/ the Republicans (I can’t remember exactly how), the President was forced to remove the line from the speech. Here’s Sam, chief speechwriter, talking about it with another staff member. Best show on TV - EVER!
The West Wing inspired a whole generation of young Obama volunteers on the campaign trail twice and in the administration!
It must have been hard for Rob Lowe to be on that show when he’s a republican.
:-)
Looks like they are having fun today in the White House for BigBlockOfCheeseDay :-)
Dude is wearing SHORTS and NO SOCKS! Wow!
He’s 6’5″ or something. A Harvard Graduate with loads of Ink. I have heard him speak. I hope he gets the more exposure, nationally for more folks to get to know him better.

Plans to seize the assets of asylum seekers are among controversial new measures on immigration being debated by MPs in Demark.
The proposals have been condemned by the UN refugee agency and other rights groups, who say they go against international rules on refugees.
Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen has called the plan the “most misunderstood bill in Denmark’s history”.
The bill is expected to be voted on later in the month.
The government on Tuesday secured a parliamentary majority to alter the proposed legislation to allow the Danish authorities to seize migrants’ cash and other individual items worth more than 10,000 kroner (£1,000; €1,340, $1,450).
Wedding rings and other items of sentimental value will not be included.
The move has been likened by some commentators to the treatment of Jews by Nazi Germany during the Holocaust.

ROTFLMAO! Funny but true indeed…
HF :D :D
Aren’t they already released? They were supposed to be at 2am EST this am.
Yes, they’ve been released but this tweet was from last night, when the media and GOP were triumphantly trying to create mass hysteria out of something they knew very little about, but were hoping it would mean “bad news for Obama.” Murdoch apparently rushed to post this garbage without any real knowledge of what was going on, or the plans for the soldiers’ return, which were announced even before PBO gave his SOTU address. :)
At State of the Union, Michelle Obama Wears Her Optimism for All to See
…Yes, there were more important things to think about than a dress on Tuesday. But if you believe this highly social-media-aware administration — the one thatpreviewed the evening’s speech on Facebook — did not calculate the subliminal signals that the two protagonists might send via every means possible on one of the most public, closely watched evenings of the year, well, I’ve got a birther for you to meet.
Especially because the dress was impossible to miss, thanks to its bright hue, identified by its designer,Narciso Rodriguez, as marigold, but labeled by Twitter observers, as, variously, mango, mustard and orange Starburst.
It was just as impossible to miss the fact that it telegraphed a mood that was unquestionably upbeat and sunny. Indeed, it was the brightest dress the first lady had worn to a State of the Union since 2012, when she appeared in bright blue Barbara Tfank, and a notable contrast to the last State of the Union, where she wore a zipped-up sober gray skirt suit by Michael Kors — and the dimensions were multiple.
The designer, after all, is Cuban-American; a fitting (no pun intended) nod to the resumption of diplomatic relations between the countries that is part of her husband’s legacy, as well as to the American fashion industry, for which she has been a notable booster. Though the dress was originally priced at $2,095 on NeimanMarcus.com, then reduced to $628, it is now sold out.
As it happens, Mr. Rodriguez has been a favorite of Mrs. Obama’s since the first campaign, when she wore a red and black dress he made for election night. She wore his burgundy dress to her husband’s first State of the Union in 2009. Then, as now, the dress was sleeveless. Then, as now, the first lady’s sculpted arms were on display. Then, people freaked out a little (sleeveless! in February!), and she did not go sleeveless again to the annual speech until 2013. Now, no one blinked. Though, judging by the votes of Twitter approval, they did seem to smile.
Progress, of a kind.
First Lady Michelle Obama shines in every color of the rainbow!
Good lord - is everything analyzed?
Designer - cuban
Dress color - bright
Sleeveless
Dr. Phil - what does all of this mean???!!!????

Members of the Irish parliament will discuss petitions calling for Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump to be barred from entering the country, according to the Irish newspaper The Journal.
The Joint Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions, which handles such proposals from the public, is slated to address two petitions to ban the business mogul in the next several weeks.

I guess his threat to pull his billion(s)? from the UK wasn’t much of a deterrence.
Doesn’t appear that it will go anywhere, but even going through the motions is making a statement.
Trump said that POTUS SOTU speech was boring, is that because POTUS wasn’t threatening to throw everyone out of this country who wasn’t white?
Trump is using the label of “boring” (or similar terms) so much now that it’s becoming meaningless. Trump is becoming the epitome of the saying about “empty wagons”.
You can see the warmth in VP Joe’s face
yep yep
Thank you Barry Jackson!!!!!
Unlike them, PBO doesn’t just say he will/wants to do something without a plan to get it done. GOP are the ones who through out generalities to get the sound byte and are unable to get into specifics *if* asked.
This is exactly what I was thinking and I would not at all be surprised to hear that the groundwork for this has been progressing for the past seven years. I remember the President saying this in his first SOTU. Like everything else he started working with all the gifted people he enlists from day one.
“Speaker Ryan closes Iran vote swiftly to punish tardiness”
http://thehill.com/blogs/floor-action/house/265740-speaker-ryan-closes-iran-vote-early-to-enforce-tardiness
——-
Ryan abruptly ordered closing a vote after the allotted 15 minutes on legislation to prevent the Obama administration from lifting sanctions on Iranian entities unless it certifies they aren’t involved with terrorism or the country’s ballistic missile program.
As a result, more than 130 lawmakers missed Wednesday’s vote, which was gaveled down when the tally hit 191-106. The tally was vacated because an insufficient number of members voted.
yet another example of rethug incompetence.
It seems Scalise is just as bad counting votes as McCarthy was.

Iran media calm about US sailors’ incursion.
Iranian state media’s coverage of the arrest of 10 US sailors after they strayed into Iranian waters was studiously restrained and measured in tone.
The pejorative terms usually reserved for the US and other Western powers - such as “global arrogance” and “enemies” - have been conspicuous by their absence.
State TV and radio reports did stress that the US incursion was “illegal” and that Tehran wanted an apology. It later reported that it had got it, though Washington denied this.
But Iranian reports also highlighted remarks by the naval commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, Adm Ali Fadavi, saying he was broadly satisfied with the US authorities’ account of the incident.
In an interview with state-run Channel One, he said he was convinced that the incursion was not premeditated or aimed at espionage, but the unintentional result of mechanical failure.
In a small sideswipe, Adm Fadavi also accused the US sailors of “unprofessional behaviour”.

City hall office containing water documents broken into, officials say
FLINT, MI – Officials say a recent city hall break-in occurred in an office containing documents related to the city’s water system.
Flint police previously reported a break-in at City Hall, 1101 S. Saginaw St. over the holiday break, but information released Monday, Jan. 11, confirmed the break-in happened at a vacant executive office in the mayor’s suite that contained documents related to the city’s water system.
“The office that was broken into is where some water files are kept,” Flint Mayor Karen Weaver said. “However, at this point it’s hard to tell if any files were taken. The only thing we know for sure was stolen is a TV.”
Flint Police Chief James Tolbert said investigators were working to discover if any documents connected to the city’s water system were taken.
The break-in was discovered Dec. 28 by an employee when they returned from work following the holiday break. No other offices were disturbed.
“The video doesn’t show anything,” Tolbert said. “Officers are now doing a security survey.”…
PERFECT!!!
JER, thank you so much for the Omaha coverage - I’m enjoying it while on my lunch break :-)

Dear Powerball Winner: Take Our Advice and Take the Annuity
So let us suppose, reader, that you have won Wednesday’s $1.5 billion Powerball jackpot. Congratulations! You have some important decisions to make, such as what ailing magazine to acquire and what congressional seat your spouse should run for. But first, you must choose whether to take the prize as an annuity paid over 30 years, or a lump-sum payment right now.
If I’m reading you right, you should probably take the annuity.
First, some background: You might not realize this, but the top prize in the $1.5 billion Powerball is not actually $1.5 billion. (Nor is it $999 million, as many of the three-digit-readout lottery signs around the country say it is.) If you take the prize as a one-time cash payment, you will get a mere $930 million, before taxes.
