“MOSCOW — The obscure performance-enhancing drug that may have doomed tennis star Maria Sharapova’s career was developed for the Soviet military and used during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan to maintain soldiers’ focus under stress, according to the drug’s inventor. Sharapova announced Monday that she tested positive at the Australian Open for meldonium, which has been banned in competition since Jan. 1. The drug, which is not approved for use in the United States, is used to treat heart disease and other chronic conditions in Russia and Eastern Europe — but it was first developed in the then Soviet republic of Latvia at the height of the Cold War as a military tool.
What a long journey from the battle-scarred valleys of Afghanistan to the manicured courts of Wimbledon. Meldonium, also known as mildronate, “was invented in the Soviet era, when Ivars Kalviņš was studying mechanisms of stress on the body,” according to a 2009 article in the weekend supplement of Latvia’s Diena newspaper. “His research results coincided with the authorities’ demand to create a medicine that enhances endurance and performance. So the medicine, first produced in small quantities in laboratories, became a part of a nearly everyday diet for [Soviet] soldiers – it was used by pilots and those who served on submarines, as well by those who took part in the [Soviet] war in Afghanistan,” Diena wrote….continued”

By the time *they* are all finished explaining and rationalizing this story, they’ll have organizations/people apologizing to Sharapova for *her* dishonesty. IMO, Sharapova wanted “a medicine that enhances endurance and performance” which was not known in the US and she took it knowingly. It would be hard to convince me that international athletes (with their paid trainers ) who take drugs-steroids-whatever don’t do it knowingly.
Whether you agree with the author’s intro/perspective he has complied an eclectic group of songs, from around the world….many I had never heard before reading/listening to this NYMagazine piece:
“It’s not as if I made some principled choice not to listen to it. It’s just that Beyoncé released “Formation” on a Saturday, and then performed it at the Super Bowl on Sunday, and as of Monday I hadn’t gotten around to it, for reasons that are incredibly uninteresting: I happened to have been doing other stuff, which seems as if it’s probably among my rights as an American. By then, though, the song had become such an intense focus of discussion at the digital water cooler — to the point where it felt difficult to turn on a computer without someone’s views about “Formation” and its various sociopolitical valences reaching out and grasping for your throat — that my not having heard it acquired some kind of political dimension. A decision had to be made. Either I needed to dutifully consume this object of conversation and develop an opinion about it or I needed to develop a defense of why I hadn’t yet done so. The point being: Here, for a moment, was music that actively dragooned me into paying attention to it, based not primarily on sound, performance or composition, but on the rolling snowball of perspectives, close readings and ideological disputes accreting around it. It’s songs that do this now; individual songs and mass opinion, working in tandem. This wasn’t always the case….
….So these days it’s the song, and the scale of the event surrounding it. One song, one digestible thing, with millions of people standing in a circle around it, pointing and shouting and writing about it, conducting one gigantic online undergraduate seminar about it, metabolizing it on roughly the same level that cable-news debate shows metabolize a political speech. This is an ever-greater share of the public life of music. A song like “Formation” isn’t set up as a story, or an interior monologue — it’s set up as Beyoncé, the public celebrity whose biography you already know, addressing the world, like an op-ed with drums….We’ve found a way to collect around the handful of songs we all have in common, yoke them with our opinions and make a (mostly) joyful noise. I don’t begrudge Beyoncé or the world one second of it. But it does throw into stark relief the things we have a much harder time talking about, at least with strangers: the way songs make us feel, the things we discover in them that aren’t already on other people’s minds, the obscure pleasures we’re willing to risk trying to explain from the darkness. The ever-larger private life of music. How do we talk about that?…continued”

The anti-immigration Alternative für Deutschland party looked set to beat forecasts in all regions voting on Sunday — and score the biggest electoral success for the populist right since the rebirth of German democracy after the second world war. In Saxony-Anhalt it was on track to record the best regional result of any German populist rightwing party since 1945.
The domestic setback comes as Ms Merkel is struggling abroad, battling to secure EU partners’ support for a controversial deal with Turkey to staunch the migrant inflows. According to exit polls, the AfD won 23 per cent of the vote in the depressed eastern region of Saxony-Anhalt, where the radical right has long been active. But it also exceeded expectations in wealthy western Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate, scoring 12.5 per cent and 11 per cent, respectively. The AfD mobilised droves of former non-voters, boosting voter participation as high as 72 per cent, far above normal levels for regional polls — a sign of how deeply the refugee crisis is shaking German..continued”
This is not good news. A rightward shift in Germany could not occur at a worst time. It’s amazing what fear can do to people’s common sense.
It’s worrying indeed, but partly understandable. Here in Cologne we had the horror of multiple women being sexually attacked and robbed on New Year’s Eve. Many people are feeling threatened by the sudden enormous increase of refugees in the country. There has been a rise in house theft and street robberies….although most refugees are happy and grateful to be here, the few exceptions are ruining it all for the vast majority. I hope this election does not drastically change Angela Merkel’s refugee policies.
i think that the powers that seek to enslave….never give up…they lay in wait for the opportune moment…when folks vigilance are at their weakest….and then they pounce…all the rhetoric of the RW is the same….they use fear and hatred of the other to control and gain power…even in a place like Germany….History can repeat itself…
There’s a lot of sisterly love in that photo, evidence of the warm affection that exists in the whole family. I think Sasha will miss Malia almost as much as our President will when she goes to college.

Another Hillary Scandal: For Profit Colleges

The for profit college industry is one of the worst scams going, at least if you are one of their students. They have a much lower graduation rate than traditional colleges, and an absurdly high number of their students rely on student loans to fund their education. On average, tuition costs are much more expensive. Many are rife with fraud and deceptive business practices. Their business model relies heavily on federal funding, and many exploit veterans and low income students.
Candidate Hillary Clinton has stated repeatedly on the stump that she will crack down on these for profit higher educational scam artists. However, not so long ago, she was much less concerned about the for profit college industry. In fact, she actively favored one particular for profit college while she was Secretary of State, Laureate International Universities:
[In 2009] Clinton wrote in an email to a top aide that she wanted to add Laureate Education to the guest list for the event. Describing Laureate as “the fastest growing college network in the world,” Clinton said the company was “started by Doug Becker who Bill likes a lot.”
“It’s a for-profit model that should be represented,” she added in the August 2009 email. A senior vice president at Laureate was added to the guest list, a separate email shows.
Former President Bill Clinton several months later became an honorary chancellor for Laureate International Universities, a role for which he was paid $16.5 million between 2010 and 2014. Clinton stepped down from the position earlier this year.

NPR had an article this morning about trade and how it relates to current political views that it is the problem with the inequality in income we face. Some candidates are saying we need tariffs and why that is not the answer. I only heard part of the article so plan to see if I can find it to read.

A new national Public Policy Polling survey finds Americans want President Obama to be able to appoint Antonin Scalia’s replacement on the Supreme Court- and they really don’t want any of the Republican front runners for President making the call.
This continues to look like an issue that has the potential to hurt Senate Republicans nationally this year. By a 19 point margin voters say they’re less likely to vote for a Senator who refuses to consider a nominee to the Supreme Court this year, with only 31% saying they’re more likely to vote for someone who takes that stance compared to 50% who say they’re less likely to. Independents would vote against a Senator with that position by a 16 point spread. This issue is just reinforcing the already awful brand of Senate Republicans nationally. Just 10% of voters in the country approve of the job Mitch McConnell is doing, to 59% who disapprove. His unpopularity is a liability for members of his caucus hoping to be reelected this year, and the approach he’s taking on this issue is just making the problem worse.

The establishment Republican ideology prioritizes capital above all else. For them, the market does not exist to serve people: people exist to serve the market. Unregulated capitalism can never fail; it can only be failed by those too lazy, useless and unproductive to serve and profit by it. It is a totalizing ideology as impractical as state communism but lacking the silver lining of its species-being idealism; as impervious to reason as any cult religion, but lacking the promise of community, salvation or utopia; as brutal as any dictatorship, but without the advantage of order and security. Worst of all, it blames its victims for its failure to provide solutions to their needs.
When those victims were mostly the underclasses and communities of color, establishment Republicans had no difficulty tapping into racist prejudices to excuse the failure of the unregulated market to adequately serve the needs of the whole population. But now that large numbers of previously comfortably employed white communities have been abandoned to the ravages of deindustrialization, automation and globalization, racism and prejudice alone no longer suffice. The communities left behind have found a new savior in a man who promises to give them all their jobs back and make America great again. The establishment has been left flat-footed in response, unable to win an all-out multi-front war against a reality-show buffoon.

A Palestinian teacher has won a $1m (£707,000) global teaching prize - with the award announced in a video message by Pope Francis.
Hanan Al Hroub grew up in a Palestinian refugee camp and now is a teacher of refugees herself.
She specialises in supporting children who have been traumatised by violence.
The winner was announced at an awards ceremony in Dubai, with a video message of congratulation sent by Prince William.
Pope Francis sent a message saying that teachers were “the builders of peace and unity”.
Ms Al Hroub told the audience that “teachers could change the world”.
Growing up in a refugee camp near Bethlehem, Ms Al Hroub now works with refugee pupils, with an approach using play that is aimed at resolving violence and tension.
“I am proud to be a Palestinian female teacher standing on this stage,” she said after receiving the award.
She says she will spend the prize money on supporting her students.

It talks about both Bernie and The Donald blaming our woes on the trade deals and why it would not have been better if we had not had it. Also why trade tariffs are not the answer. Sorry I do not know how to repost it. Maybe someone here will do that if they think it is worthwhile.
