I had been wondering how Teen Vogue became so badass in the political and activism arena in 2016. Their articles have been enlightening.

That’s what happens when you have a black woman unafraid to use her huge platform to talk about issues that MATTER.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Elaine Welteroth.

In Hamilton’s Federalist Paper 68, He addresses Electoral College’s responsibility to prevent corrupted individuals that could, particularly those who are either more directly associated with a “foreign state” (i.e. Buffoon Trump & Putin)), or individuals who do not have the capacity (i.e. Buffoon Trump) to run the country from the office of POTUS.

He is the textbook subversive they spoke of. I will call Sen. McCain’s office and give him my thoughts, as well as Sen. Flake. Will ask McCain straight up if this is what he fought for and was held captive for….a puppet leader installed by a hostile govt.

You know what would cause a tsunami felt around the world? The revocation of the puppet’s “presidency” because it was gotten because of foreign interference and is illegitimate, and the installation of the overwhelming choice of the people, Hillary Clinton. Putin would get SUCH a freaking punishment! For so many reasons, even neocons could get behind that idea…

        DF,

There are swayable Republicans in the Senate — would like to see Electoral College do the right thing (fulfill the founding fathers’ intent), but they are so entrenched in state and local politics, seems like a real Hail Mary pass to me).

Doubt that Pence would be much better, so the best we can hope for is the brewing GOP civil war that I’m crossing my fingers hasn’t really gone away and that DJT suffers the obstruction and humiliation that was so unfairly heaped on PBO.

Ben Sasse (R-Nebraska) was a huge vocal critic of DJT before the election; don’t know where he stands now…

One of my favorite movies is “The Grifters,” it’s a movie about con-artist and it starred John Cusack. He played a young con man plying his trade and making money. Early on in the movie John Cusack’s character is told by his mentor to avoid the long con and stick with short cons because with a long con there are too many variables to control and you can easily slip up. Most con artists do short cons which means they get in and get out without getting caught. Later on in the movie John Cusack’s character meets a female con artist and they hit it off. The female con artist tells Cusack’s character that she had a long time boyfriend that only did long cons and that eventually the stress and strain of doing long cons drove him insane; see where I’m going folks. Donald Trump has been effectively running long cons his entire life. His cons were okay because they were in a sense “locally” and they didn’t affect the entire country. Now that he’s President, or he soon will be President his cons will now affect this entire nation or the world for that matter. We are now at calamity’s door, President Obama said a long time ago “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for,” we shall soon find out.

You would think that being elected President would change how Trump speaks, but he could have given this interview months before the election. Basically he’s saying “don’t bother me with the small stuff, I’m a big picture guy.”

    GM TODville.

Thinking more about Teen Vogue and @ElaineWelteroth, and it’s given me the most encouragement that I’ve had since last month’s election.

Back when the iPhone and Twitter was introduced, I recall seeing a lot of vitriol and scorn heaped on Boomer hippies — figured it was just a generational thing, but didn’t know why being anti-(Vietnam)war and equality for all people was such a negative thing (I know there’s other reasons hippies are disliked, but these were the motivational forces for the teens and twentysomethings of that era).

Now it seems that the fears from the depressing 70s (for those who don’t remember, it was truly a horrible decade — Vietnam War, Watergate, Patty Hearst/SLA, James Jones cult, Iranian hostages, double-digit inflation, Chowchilla, gasoline rationing and lines/fights, the list goes on…) are coming true. Our Manchurian Candidate Cold War, ecological disaster fears all wrapped up in DJT.

It’s so important for young people (many of whom are students and have flexibility in their hours) to seize this moment and bring this country to its senses.

Thankfully there’s Teen Vogue and its powerful Editor-in-chief. (@mattdpearce has a few tweets on this subject today.)

Forgot to post the tweet with a photo of fearless Ms. Welteroth:

[OK, where’s Faux News? …. This added an extra cackle to my morning, my sense of humor! :)]

Christmas came in extravagant fashion to the Muslim desert emirate of Abu Dhabi as a glitzy hotel unveiled a bejewelled Christmas tree valued at more than 11 million dollars on Wednesday.

It is the “most expensive Christmas tree ever,” with a “value of over 11 million dollars,” said Hans Olbertz, general manager of Emirates Palace hotel, at its inauguration.

The 13-metre (40-foot) faux evergreen, located in the gold leaf-bedecked rotunda of the hotel, is decorated with silver and gold bows, ball-shaped ornaments and small white lights.

But the necklaces, earrings and other jewellery draped around the tree’s branches are what give it a record value.

It holds a total of 181 diamonds, pearls, emeralds, sapphires and other precious stones, said Khalifa Khouri, owner of Style Gallery, which provided the jewellery.

“The tree itself is about 10,000 dollars,” Olbertz said. “The jewellery has a value of over 11 million dollars — I think 11.4, 11.5.” […..]

    http://progressiveerupts.blogspot.com/2016/12/the-craven-calculus-of-too-many.html

“The craven calculus of too many Republicans at this point seems to be that pursuing a reactionary policy portfolio that now includes gutting Medicare and Social Security is more important than the fact that a foreign power has meddled in an election decided in three states by a total vote total that, as somebody I read noted, could fit into a college football stadium. The news on this front is now compounded by Trump’s choice for Secretary of State – Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson – who has close ties to Putin. This is on top of multiple other links to Russia from members of Trump’s inner circle. The Founding Fathers worried about a demagogue rising to power backed by a foreign adversary. That notion seemed to diminish to the point of a quaint anachronism over the centuries as our democracy solidified and our strength as a world power grew. No longer.

Perhaps it is too strong to suggest that to countenance what Putin and Russia did in our presidential election with a shrug or a justification forfeits the right to call yourself a patriot, no matter how many flags lapel pins you own…” –Dan Rather

I may be too skeptical, but figure the GOP will not be interested in exposing Russia’s connection to their side as it could mean they could have a dent in their total power play. I think we need to get in control of the Senate in 2018 and put on the investigation then. It is hard to imagine anything could happen now, but I would welcome it.

I think that many Republicans in office thought that Trump was going to go about the business of giving them everything they wanted in terms of tax cuts, ending Obamacare and Medicaid, and Medicare and he was going to nibble around the edges of the EPA, the Department of Education and the IRS. Many of them have been caught of guard by Trumps dealings with Russia and his fondness for Putin. I think a lot of them are waking up and saying “oh shit” the fuck is this. Trump does not give a fuck about any Republican in the House, he barely hides his contempt for those in the Senate. They were okay with Trump and his “build the wall” and the “lock her up” chants, but this business about Trump putting guys that are close to Putin in his cabinet might be a bridge too far for their liking. Take a look at all of Trump’s surrogates, all of them that have Russian connections are still around, the rest of them are out in the cold like Giuliana and Chris Christie and everyone else that was a part of the clown show that was the Republican debates. Its going to take more than just Democrats in the House and Senate to stop Trump, its also going to take a lot of brave Republicans to join in to stop Trump.

See my response to DF upthread (currently comment #17).

MSM has chosen to ignore the GOP civil war, but don’t think they’ll be able to do that once the Senate acts to confirm (or not) DJT’s nominations.

It’s amazing what GOP will ignore in order to dismantle ALL regulations and get tax breaks for themselves and the rich.

The only problem I see is that one of the good ol’ Republicans, Reince, is DJT’s chief of staff.

    http://www.thepeoplesview.net/main/2016/12/11/russian-coup-trump-puppet

There are many reasons why Donald Trump cannot legitimately serve as president of the United States, even if we leave aside his devastating loss in the popular vote. Trump’s clear attempts to help his business from his position of governmental power, his payments from foreign governments. his blowing off of intelligence briefings, his monumental screw-ups on international diplomacy and his transition team’s coup attempt of the US government by installing foxes to guard henhouses are just a few such reasons.

But the biggest reason is this: it has now been conclusively proven and accepted by the CIA that Russia deliberately helped Donald Trump win the election. In explosive reports over the last couple of days, the Washington Post and the New York Times have reported on not only Russian goal of helping Trump but their method: hacking both DNC and RNC emails, but only releasing DNC (and Clinton campaign) emails through Wikileaks. I have chosen my words carefully here in saying Russia released the emails through Wikileaks rather than to Wikileaks: I want to leave no doubt that there is no longer reason to believe that Wikileaks is anything more or less than an effective propaganda arm of Kremlin.

I’ve seen this proposal elsewhere also– that HRC release her electors in favor of a ‘moderate’ GOP candidate, such as Romney. This just burns me up! How come the Dems have to concede, when our candidate received over 2 million more votes, the GOP candidate was aided by illegal intervention of a foreign power, and there is ample evidence that their candidate treats the presidency of this country as some kind of game or trade deal. How come we just assume the GOP electors won’t do the right thing, we accept that they’re okay with this botched election, and we assume the GOP Congress would install the GOP candidate, despite the Russian tampering with our election, and the evidence of DT’s plan to fill the government with cronies with no experience or interest in public service. Why?!

I completely agree with you, Linda, they are rotten apples all. But I guess I’m trying to get used to us having to give in to that, to just accept that and say, oh, well, we’ll have to be the reasonable ones, the grown-ups. They’re like a toddler (except I like toddlers, and they are children who grow out of it) who is screaming for a candy, tearing up the check-out display at the grocery store. We don’t expect them to be reasonable, so we say, okay, you can have a sugarless gum, just this once, but you have to learn to wait for supper. The GOP have been playing this game for the entire Obama presidency– give us what we want or we’ll shut down the government– and now they’ve escalated. Give us our crazy-assed tyrannical presidential pick, or we’ll tear down the country. Where does it end? And how does it help to say, okay, your Russian KGB friend got your crazy-assed pick elected, so we’ll give you Romney (the sugarless gum 🙂 ) if you’ll just be quiet. We need a realistic strategy for this. Letting Romney be president is a ridiculous non-option.

        GE DF.

Reminds me of the hardware store I frequent — it’s called DIY Center, and alas, they only have a handful of locations in SoCal and one up in Bishop CA (not sure why, it’s a long way from here). Fortunately for me, 3 of their stores are near me — their prices are lower than other hardware stores, pretty much comparable to WalMart’s (don’t have the selection that the big box stores offer, but that’s OK for me, I pretty much only peruse their nursery [plants] section).

Anyhoo, each store has a permanent “store cat.” I don’t always see the cat, but they do seem to like to loll about outside in the nursery. The cats are pretty friendly if you pay attention to them, and they’re unusual colors, not the typical tabby or solid-colors cats.

Makes me happy, since I’m a cat person. 🙂

Not wait for some “other person” to speak. Now, all of us need to raise our voices before it’s too late. NOW! And, as we’re in winter right now, there’s always spring and summer. http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-iran-boeing-deal-20161211-story.html

Iran’s flag carrier finalized a major deal with U.S. plane maker Boeing Co. to buy $16.6 billion worth of passenger planes Sunday in one of the most tangible benefits yet for the Islamic Republic from last year’s landmark nuclear agreement.

Iran Air’s deal for 80 jetliners is the biggest agreement Iran has struck with an American company since the 1979 revolution and U.S. Embassy takeover. It has the potential to transform Iran’s creaking and accident-prone aviation industry, which has been hobbled by years of sanctions.

Those curbs have prevented the country from buying new planes from Chicago-based Boeing and European rival Airbus, and in many cases made it difficult for Iranian airlines to secure much-needed spare parts.

    The deal covers 50 single-aisle 737 Max 8s, a soon-to-be-introduced version of Boeing’s existing narrow-body 737 line.
