ThinkProgress: Former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, a Republican who was appointed to the position by George W. Bush, told CBS News on Saturday that he would have handled the situation in Benghazi the same way that the Obama administration did last September.

During an interview that aired on CBS’ Face the Nation on Sunday morning, Gates defended the administration’s reaction to the attacks in Libya and dismissed many of the criticisms leveled by his fellow Republicans as “cartoonish”….

Steve Benen: There were several oddities about the House Oversight Committee’s Benghazi hearing last week, but one of the unanswered questions related to Chairman Darrell Issa’s (R-Calif.) choice of witnesses. Yesterday, on “Meet the Press,” this grew even more problematic.

The hearing was supposed to be about the committee getting more answers about the attack, but Issa chose not to invite former Ambassador Thomas Pickering, a veteran diplomat from the Reagan and Bush administrations, who helped oversee the independent investigation into the events in Benghazi. If the goal was to get more information, why not ask Pickering to appear?

Addicting Info: 10 Examples Of Why The Republican ‘Benghazi’ Talking Point Is Hypocritical

At this point it’s well-established there was no wrongdoing by President Barack Obama or former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton when it came to the response to the terror strike in Benghazi that Fox News and conservatives around the nation have been trying to use to score political points against the high-profile Democratic leaders.

Unfortunately for Republicans, the fact that they have pushed so hard when there was no “scandal” shows that they were only out to use Benghazi for the political ammunition. Here’s even more proof, with 10 examples of other things that Republicans didn’t seem nearly so upset about or interested in investigating….

Ezra Klein: The good reasons for the IRS’s dumb mistake ….. The IRS does need some kind of test that helps them weed out political organizations attempting to register as tax-exempt 501(c)4 social welfare groups. But that test has to be studiously, unquestionably neutral.

….. The context for all this is that after Citizens United and some related decisions, the number of groups registering as 501(c)4s doubled. Because the timing of that doubling coincided with a rise in political activism on the right rather than the left, a lot of the politicized groups attempting to register as 501(c)4s were describing their purpose in tea party terms. A popular conceit, for instance, was that they existed to educate on the Constitution – even if the particular pedagogical method meant participating in Republican Party primaries and pressuring incumbent politicians.

…. It is worth remembering an important fact here: The IRS is supposed to reject groups that are primarily political from registering as 501(c)4s. If they’re going to do that, then they need some kind of test that helps them flag problematic applicants…

E.J. Dionne: …. Public officials are very selective about when violence and death matter.

Politicians who tout themselves as advocates of law and order don’t want to be unmasked as caring even more about their ratings from gun lobbyists. And opponents of the most moderate gun reforms engage in a shameless game of bait-and-switch. Because measures such as background checks would not stop every murder, they’re declared useless even though they’d still save lives. Then the gun lobby turns around and opposes other measures, such as a ban on high-capacity magazines, which could prevent some of the killings that background checks might not.

The lack of coherence doesn’t bother those who are willing to tolerate all manner of violence to keep the gun business free of inconvenient restraints. Their goal is to exhaust supporters of sane gun laws and get them to give up until the next big tragedy strikes.

Mayor Tom Barrett of Milwaukee has never given up and never given in. One of the earliest members of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the group spearheaded by New York’s Michael Bloomberg and Boston’s Tom Menino, he has made curbing urban bloodshed a personal cause….

ThinkProgress: Four Newtown mothers whose children were killed during the December 14th shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School have a message for the country this Mother’s Day: “We are not going away.”

In a heartbreaking essay, Jackie Barden, Nicole Hockley, Nelba Marquez-Greene and Francine Wheeler reflect upon their childrens’ lives, thank those who have stood behind them and ask others to make the Sandy Hook Promise. They write that while they’re disappointed by the Senate’s recent failure to pass additional gun regulations, they aren’t giving up on their efforts to prevent tragedies like Sandy Hook from happening in the future…

Heads up, Ladies! Misogyny is alive and well, and starts early. Just took my three-year-old grandson to his play group. He and a little girl, glad to see one another, ran and hugged.
    “Who is that”, I asked.
He blushed and answered, “That’s my girl pet.”
    I balked, “girl pet?!”
He said, “Well, Riley (his dog) is gone and Mommy said I can’t have a hamster so I got a girl pet.”

Is it just me or is CNN not making a gigantic issue about Benghazi or the IRS story lines like fox news or msnbc. Both of theses stories are trumped up to try to get at President Obama. I think CNN must know it is a load of crap.

Just saw this. An article from 2012:

      http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/12/14/roves-super-pac-promised-irs-it-would-spend-limited-money-on-election/

      excerpt:
Political insiders and campaign-finance watchdogs have long questioned how Crossroads, the brainchild of GOP strategist Karl Rove, had characterized its intentions to the IRS.

Now, for the first time, ProPublica has obtained the group’s application for recognition of tax-exempt status, filed in September 2010. The IRS has not yet recognized Crossroads GPS as exempt, causing some tax experts to speculate that the agency is giving the application extra scrutiny. If Crossroads GPS is ultimately not recognized, it could be forced to reveal the identities of its donors.

The tax code allows groups like Crossroads to spend money on political campaigns u2014 and to keep their donors private u2014 as long as their primary purpose is enhancing social welfare.”

In other words the IRS boss who is Republican and a Bush appointee thought there was something funny about these groups and decided to really take a hard look.

Scandal? No. Game over for the media’s latest shiny object? You betcha.

Great points that I agree with 1001%.

      I wrote this:

Question Demagogues everywhere……when did SCOTUS OK’ed Citizen United? Yep on Jan 21, 2010.

Question, when did tea party and all these groups in the thousands started applying rigorous for Tax Exemptions?

How the money is funneled and redirected and misrepresented for what causes are what IRS were taxed to figure out before issuing Tax Exemptions for which they gave out many in droves.

    Well, lookey here.

    • May 13, 2013 at 10:11 am

The scrutiny was because of the increase in the number of applications for tax-exempt status. THAT was the red flag. It was just coincidence that these applications were for conservative organizations.

      • May 13, 2013 at 12:41 pm

Read Nena’s comment above, swbluega. The flood of “Tea Party” and “Patriot” organizations followed the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision. Not too coincidental.

    • May 13, 2013 at 10:26 am

I remember when All Saints Church in Pasadena was threatened to revoke their tax exempt status for their sermon the week before the election but not Pat Robertson and all the other RW churches that preach on rw policies of the Bush Administration.

    • May 13, 2013 at 10:27 am

And Murray’s phrasing is flat out wrong. The IRS didn’t target these groups. It decided to scrutinize them before granting tax-exempt status. Isn’t that what they’re supposed to do instead of handing out tax-exempt status like free bubble gum?

    • May 13, 2013 at 10:30 am

More BOTH SIDES DO IT clap-trap!

  13. May 13, 2013 at 10:03 am

So the conservatives are screaming “abuse of power” because the IRA highly scrutinized conservative organizations that applied for a tax-exempt status. No mention that red flags were raised because of the high volume of applications that came through in a relative short time frame. No thought about the number of organizations who have a non-exempt status that are money-making operations; especially for the heads of these organizations. (Mega-churches come to mind as an example. I agree with kathryn kivett that it is past time to re-evaluate which groups should be tax exempt and triggers that would rescind this status.)

But it’s not abuse of power when the Senate asks excessive, and typically unreasonable, questions and demanding unprecedented amounts of documents when it comes to confirming the nominees of THIS President for cabinet positions? And it’s not abuse of power to excessively use the filibuster to impede progress for the sole purpose of trying to taint President Obama’s legacy?

  14. May 13, 2013 at 10:03 am

Regarding the IRS mess. I made a comment at the end of the last thread, but by the time I finished you guys had just left me in the dust. So I brought it over.

This is so much phoney baloney. The IRS targets groups all the time…people who claim a high percentage of contributions, people with at-home businesses and one would wonder why they are always nabbing some Hollywood type. The question here should be did they target the group because they were Conservatives or because they requested tax exempt status and just happened to be Conservatives.

I suppose I’m wondering how a determination of status is determined without certain input. The implications seem to suggest they were to be given the shield of tax exempt status before a determination was made.

Bottom line…they won’t find President Obama’s prints anywhere on this crap!

      1. first of all, they have done that many times in recent years. david waldman of dailykos has been giving the history of that. 2. the i.r.s. should be targeting as many groups as they can. that’s the damn job of the i.r.s.!!! so another made-up story by “the news” since we know the i.r.s is supposed to police groups, especially newer ones, and they’ve been applying their investigations fairly across the political spectrum. these are facts and this is not a story.

`If groups operating under section 501(c)(4) are supposed
to be, by definition, non-political social welfare groups, then
political activity by them is illegal. So how can conservatives complain
that they are being targeted for political reasons? Aren’t they
implicitly agreeing that these groups are in fact political
organizations hiding under the rubric of social welfare organizations?.

Good morning everyone. Hope you Mothers had a nice day. Lets start the week with a bit o’ humor.

Jacob, age 92, and Rebecca, age 89, living in Miami, are all excited about their decision to get married. They go for a stroll to discuss the wedding, and on the way they pass a drugstore. Jacob suggests they go in.

Jacob addresses the man behind the counter:

    “Are you the owner?”

    The pharmacist answers, “Yes.”

Jacob: “We’re about to get married. Do you sell heart medication?”

    Pharmacist: “Of course, we do.”

Jacob: “How about medicine for circulation?”

    Pharmacist: “All kinds.”

    Jacob: “Medicine for rheumatism?”

    Pharmacist: “Definitely.”

    Jacob: “How about suppositories?”

    Pharmacist: “You bet!”

Jacob: “Medicine for memory problems, arthritis and Alzheimer’s?”

Pharmacist: “Yes, a large variety. The Works.”

Jacob: “What about vitamins, sleeping pills, Geritol, antidotes for Parkinson’s disease?”

    Pharmacist: “Absolutely.”

Jacob: “Everything for heartburn and indigestion?”

    Pharmacist: “We sure do.”

Jacob: “You sell wheelchairs and walkers and canes?”

    Pharmacist: “All speeds and sizes.”

    Jacob: “Adult diapers?”

    Pharmacist: “Sure.”

Jacob: “We’d like to use this store as our Bridal Registry.”

It’s only a scandal for the IRS. PBO is not Nixon and does not give orders to some low level employee in one city to attack groups. This is the type of issue that Congressional oversight committees are supposed to investigate. It should have nothing to do with any President.

Max Baucus is mad at the President for something. ANd when Max Baucus is mad at you, watch out. Ask Tom Dashle…

When Baucus said publicly that the implementation of Obamacare “was a train-wreck”, he got my attention… But now with this new statement about the IRS, there is NO DOUBT in my mind that his agenda is to hurt the president. Is it related to the emotional statement the President made after the defeat of the gun safety rules in the Senate, when he expresses his disgust over all the people who voted NO ? Or is is something that happened prior to that ?

Whatever it is, I doubt it’s very big. NOTHING that can justify the meanness of Max Baucus.

I’m happy he’s retiring. Good riddance.

I am looking forward to the joint press conference between president Obama and prime minister Cameron. I think it will be epic to watch the president school these idiots without mercy. What time is the presser?

I’ve read on this site and some other democratic sites where people questioned why we don’t often see democrats on TV defending this president or his policies. Well, based on my observations, there are a lot of people in the democratic party that are extremely jealous of PBO and his accomplishments. When then Senator Obama decided to run for president, some democrats were okay with him running but they never thought he had much of a chance against Hillary Clinton to win the nomination. Only a handful of democrats in congress believed that he could do it, and they mostly consisted of Dick Durbin, Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, Bob Casey, Claire McCaskill, Jack Reed, Ken Salazer, Sherrod Brown, Sheldon Whitehouse, Jesse Jackson Jr., Jan Schakowsky, Neil Abercrombie, and a few more whose names skip my mind at the moment,

Some democrats in congress were okay with then Senator Obama as long as they could use his popularity to bring out voters in congressional election in 2006. Barack Obama was so useful to democrats running for elections and re-elections in 2006 that he was constantly asked to travel from places to places to campaign for them. They were okay with him being the face of the democratic party as long as he knew his place and understood that he had to wait his turn. Senator Dick Durbin was one of the first to encourage him to run for president. Durbin believed then that it was his time to do it and not to wait for another election cycle. Only a handful actually believed he had a shot. The rest probably thought he was in over his head. They knew Barack Obama was popular amongst the youth, and they thought they could use his popularity to help turn out votes for the democratic party as a whole. They thought all he needed was to stay competitive with Hillary but they never wanted or expected him to beat Hillary. They were as shocked as Hillary was when he not only won Iowa, but ended up winning all the Caucus states with Nevada being the exception. There was a lot to be gained by these people if Hillary had won the nomination and the presidency. Go back and research the attitudes of some members of the democratic congressional caucus during the 2007-2008 campaign even when it was evident that Hillary could never overcome the number of delegates that Barack Obama had accumulated. The only thing she had going for her were the number of supergelegates she had in her corner at the time. Instead of putting their foot down by being frank with Hillary, they didn’t and allowed the contest to continued knowing full well that Hillary had no chance of ever overtaking Obama. If the situation had been reversed, there was no way they would have allowed Barack Obama to continued to stay on in the campaign like that. I remembered what some of those idiots said at the time. And these are your democrats.

There is no doubt in my mind that there is deep jealousy and maybe even some hatred towards PBO among some members of his own party. The jealousy stemmed from the fact that they never felt that he paid his dues. Some could never fathom how a relatively unknown just a few years ago could rise to the top of the political enchelon so fast without money, power, or political dynasty behind him. The fact that he owed them nothing to get to the top irks a lot of them. He not only did it his way, he did it the right way. He did it in a way that will forever be remembered in the history book. The Obama Campaign model will be studied and implemented by political operatives to help their clients in future political campaigns. Don’t be fooled by the smiling faces during SOTU. There are people jealous of him from the progressive caucus, the congressional black caucus, the fictional blue dog caucus, the Hillary should’ve been president caucus, and just about every democratic caucus out there. I don’t blame President Obama for not trusting many of these people. They are vultures that would like nothing more than to see his downfall. The thing is PBO doesn’t need them in his corner, he already has us. We the People will always have his back.

    Sorry for the long post.

How true, just like 2010 when PBO was out campaigning for them while they ran away from him. This time for 2014, they have POTUS & FLOTUS fundraising for their election while they are out there campaigning for Hillary 2016.

Thank you for being so honest and bringing this to the forefront….you explained to me what I have been wondering and fretting about….I believe I agree with you b/c it makes so much sense….it is so much deeper than race and it reinforces my decision to leave the Dem party when PBO is no longer President, unless of course he could persuade me to stay …..a wink and a smile in the rain might do it ; ^ )…

So I was just notified that my community qualifies for FEMA disaster aid after the April 18th floods. It’s a good thing for folks who lost so much. I got the flooded basement and had to throw out quite a bit of stuff. I’m not gonna claim anything though, unless they’re willing to put in a new permanent solution for me, and I know that’s not about to happen. A good thing to know; it’s worth it to pay the little extra for flood coverage on your home owner’s insurance, whether you live on a flood plane or not. There’s also info on the FEMA site that will tell you if you’re on a flood plane or not. If you’re not, then the extra on your insurance won’t be that much. With climate changing as it is, you never know when you may suddenly be faced with it. We never had this issue until within the last 5 or 6 years in my area of the community.

It should be THE scandal along with all of the judges who have been filibustered, but when “journalists” like those in the WHPC are probably getting paid by the gop, they will never bring it up. Someone should look into the bank account of that J. Karl guy from ABC.

Bet ya any amount of money – even $10K – that none of the reporters listened to ANYTHING President Obama or PM Cameron said. First question(s): IRS, Benghazi. As expected. President Obama answers the IRS question like the master communicator he is.

Because it is Debz is like these MSM and Repubs are throwing everything hoping it will stick and what is so disappointing is that the credible journalists out there will not call out this for what it is “political theatre”. It just makes me mad man, enough already

Found this on a FB page. Just something else to blame PBO for.

The U.S. government reported a rare surplus of $113 billion for April — the largest in five years and a sign of the nation’s improving finances…….
Through the first seven months of the budget year, the deficit was $488 billion, according to the Treasury. That’s lower than last year’s deficit of $720 billion over the same period. http://www.businessweek.com/ap/2013-05-10/us-treasury-reports-113b-surplus-in-april
