The National Memo: Obama Brings Middle-Class Message To Minnesota
President Barack Obama began a two-day visit to Minneapolis on Thursday sharing cheeseburgers with a local working mother and bringing a middle-class message tailor made to aid Democrats fearful of massive losses in the upcoming election. Obama said he shares the frustrations of people who went to college, work hard, and still struggle to buy homes, pay for child care, and dig out from student loan debt. “You are the reason I ran for office,” he told a crowd of about 350 people gathered for a town hall forum near Minnehaha Falls. In his early life, he said, “I was you guys … You are the ones I am thinking about every single day.”
Obama talked about progress his administration has made curbing greenhouse gases and making college more affordable, but devoted much of his time to touting the need for a higher minimum wage and equal pay and benefits for women. Those issues resonate strongly in Minnesota, where Gov. Mark Dayton (D) and a Democratic-controlled Legislature enacted the largest minimum wage increase in state history this year and approved a menu of economic protections for women in the workplace. “The idea that they would not be paid the same or not have the same opportunities … is infuriating,” Obama said of female workers. “If you are doing the same job, you should get the same salary. Period. Full stop.”

Watching bits and pieces tonight of the CNN special The Sixties. Saw President Johnson speaking to the nation before Congress on Selma-Montgomery. Even though I was a teenager then and lived through it, I must say, looking back, it’s still jarring to hear the word “Negroes” from a President, and still jarring to see the white Congress of that time. This is why historical archives are so important, to at least see how we’ve changed and to let the teenager of today see it. Let him and her know how ignorant and degrading and awful it all was, and let our youth see what remains of it.
Anyway, had to stop watching after seeing this clip, again, which is one of Dr. King’s most poignant speeches, to me. What a man.
NO LIE can Live Forever…
Indeed! Prettyfoot!
J’OB, without replaying the clip, I can hear his words and remember my family sitting and listening to him
He was one in many, many million, for sure.
” How long, Not long…”
Thanks JOB for sharing with us one of Dr. King’s most powerful speeches!
By the way, JOB, it is important to point out that this is a speech he gave at the conclusion of the Selma-to-Montgomery March which led to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act!
Never hurts to see it time and time again, nath!
Good evening, TOD. Caught the tail end of the parade; will we have a youtube later?

Nerdy Wonka, outstanding recap! As I missed most of the day, I really appreciate it!
Yay! Glad it helps and thank you.
Simply Awesome ….NW…..I love these round ups of the President’s and First Lady’s Day….As Nena mentioned in the last thread…the press barley covers what our President is doing…We the People are so woefully uninformed…and we do not even know that we are….our press does not live up to Sacred Trust given to them by the constitution…
Thanks, Prettyfoot58.
Yeah, it’s a travesty what some in the press have tried to do to the Obama administration and history will not judge them kindly.
There will be SOOOO many American children who will grow up to discover *they* have a personal picture with the best president of the U. S. of A! What a family treasure!

Beautiful
Music will always touch the heart and soul of a life. Beautiful, yes, yes.HZ
Yes, it will, HZ! If you’ve signed off for the evening - rest well when you get there!
Loved that tweet! Thanks for sharing it, Jacquelineoboomer, thanks to NW for relentlessly awesome posts, & congratulations to COS for first place. TGIF!
My (also retired) friend emailed me earlier to ask why I thought we still feel like sharing in the TGIF feelings when every day is a day off for us! I reminded her it’s “conditioning”! Decades of it!
Hope you enjoy your weekend, Judith!
Hi JOB! Wow! This is such a lovely story! Thanks for posting it!
Great, great tweet, JOB! “The Power of Music” Indeed! Imagine how dull, miserable and hopeless this world would be without the sounds of music.
I cannot imagine that!
Happy weekend!
Making We the People More User-Friendly Than Ever
With more than 14 million users and 21 million signatures, We the People, the White House’s online petition platform, has proved more popular than we ever thought possible. In the nearly three years since launch, we’ve heard from you on a huge range of topics, and issued more than 225 responses.
But we’re not stopping there. We’ve been working to make it easier to sign a petition and today we’re proud to announce the next iteration of We the People.
……………………….
We’re calling it “simplified signing” and it takes the account creation step out of signing a petition………………..

Chips dear, Chesty XIV is a Lance Corporal…
This made me laugh so much. One of my nieces is a Marine. On her first assignment after boot camp, her unit had a dog, German Shepard. who did hold the rank of Sgt. She was told. “This dog has more rank & more experience than you so you better respect that.”
LOL! Was she an MP?
No doubt named after Chesty Puller, the Commander of the 2nd Marine Division in the Pacific during WWII.
Correction, that’s the 1st Marine Division. He led them in the battle of Peleliu where my father fought. Over half of the force of 3 thousand men were killed in the battle.
Yes, that’s just whom he’s named after.
are we there yet? #kenyanimpeachment.
love it how he turned the tables on the drunkard.
Hello, over there!
Where is Yardarm? Is he taking a break?
He’s wandered off again Donna, only this time he asked for permission :-)
Cool. Just as long as he’s okay :)
Now the Republicans can say, We are not going to apologize for our racism, for doing nothing but obstructing, sabotaging, playing politics, and putting the party welfare ahead of the country we claim to love so much. And not accepting that the black guy was elected fair and square twice to be President of the United States. If it means we have to destroy this country, we will. Beside it will all be Barack H. Obama fault.
Doing our best to spread that word BWD!!
You go Ms. Jessica Morley…….I am one of the old people who will fight you now so that your reproductive rights are made by you and not some old coote, that you have affordable healthcare, you don’t pay more because you were born female, you have affordable education, you are protected from domestic assault because I will be one of the old people who appreciate you working to pay my SS and not sell me out for low taxes and low cost gasoline like we did your parents.
He needs that many reasons, eh?
So, Amk, is this tweet your way of telling me I can go to bed now - exchanging the baton, as it were? Thanks, ‘cos I sure am sleepy. Toodle-di-doo!
say gunnite, vc.
Every time I see a picture of President Obama leaning into the crowd like that I’m reminded of the time in 1998 when our school won a National Blue Ribbon award. Since another teacher and I had written the 50 page report that was involved, we were invited to go to D.C. with our principal to receive the award. President Clinton spoke at the award luncheon ( for 45 minutes without notes - very impressive). After his speech he surprised his SS detail by walking down off the stage to greet people. Of course the two hundred or so people in the room surged forward trying to shake his hand. His security guard hurried to stand on either side of him and one stood behind him with his arms around Clinton’s waist, not touching, but ready to grab him back if anything happened. This was a crowd of teachers to whom he had just given a rousing pro-education speech, who had been given background checks by the FBI before being invited, and who had been searched and had walked by bomb-sniffing dogs. What they thought we might possibly do I can’t imagine. The thought of PBO blithely walking up to these rope lines must drive them insane. I always wonder if there is a guy behind him with his arms around his waist just out of camera shot.
Good night TOD
#TrustBarack
Nite nite, y’all. Sweet dreams all the way around the world, and around again! :)
Thank you, Nerdy W. You give us so much to be so grateful for here at TOD. Thanks for your beautiful work. I know Chips appreciates your beautiful contributions. I do. Thank you, and thank you again.
