Paul Krugman: One crucial thing you need to understand about political journalists is that with some honorable exceptions, they don’t know or care about actual policy …
…. Hence, the awful decision of Politico to give Paul Ryan an award as healthcare policymaker of the year.
…. what became painfully, embarrassingly clear during the debate over the Ryan plan was that Ryan is, well, incompetent …. it’s true that the plan “got everyone talking”, as Politico says - but mostly it got people talking about what a mess Ryan’s effort was.
Oh, and it was pretty clear that Ryan wasn’t being honest about his own numbers.
What’s going on here, I suppose, is that Politico is mistaking theater for policy. Ryan isn’t an important health care reformer, or even minimally competent in his attempted wonkery, but he plays a deep thinker on TV. And the people at Politico either don’t understand the difference, or they don’t care.

President Obama returns to the White House after a visit to Kansas
****
Steve Benen: President Obama has decided that, from now on, foreign aid decisions will take into consideration how countries treat their LGBT citizens, and he directed U.S. agencies abroad to ensure our humanitarian and diplomatic efforts “promote and protect” the rights of gays and lesbians.
…. today’s announcement marks a historic first …. It also adds to a rather extraordinary record for Obama in this area in his first three years….
…. I realize there are still a sizable number of people in the LGBT community who are unsatisfied with the pace of change, and consider President Obama someone who has ignored, and even betrayed, their interests. Some have even vowed not to lift a finger to help with the president’s re-election effort.
I suspect many social-conservative activists find this inexplicable.

Oh Willard…..

What a great day.
Our President took it to the American people and the GOP.
I think we can say that the 2012 Campaign began today.
and Chips!!
SIX MILLION!!! :)
Agreed!!! :) He looked good while giving those speeches too ;))
So proud of my President today.
As we were yesterday. And then there’s tomorrow! :)
yes, yes, yes. i only hope we can all live up to his belief in us.
Me too, anniebella. He knocked it out of the park. He is awesome.
We should cancel the presidential election next year, because there is no doubt that the right man for the job already have the job. If only.
SIX MILLION!!!! Yeah, baby!!!!! Chica, you are the best!!!!
Chica, Chica, she’s our girl!!
The best damn blogmistress in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD!!!
Ah now stop isonprize, you’re making me  The point here is that this place would echo, in a very sad kind of way, to my voice …. if it wasn’t for you magnificent people helping me along the road. So, the six million party is a celebration of YOU, not me ;-)
okay, okay, I’ll stop. I don’t mean to make you blush. But you do hold it together. And I want you to know that, I for one, am very appreciative. I have told so many of my friends that if they want to really stay up on real news about Pres. Obama, they need to turn off the TV and check out TOD for real news of what Pres. Obama and his administration are doing. Pretty much any blog on the blogroll will give more credible information that the talking heads of TV.
Uh oh, I”m doing it again. Chica, Chica!!! she’s our girl!! …. :lol: :lol;
Oh yeah, holding it together and getting it out 7 days a week..that’s worth $6 Million Bucks right there. Actually, it’s priceless..what this means for our country.
Steve Benen & Chips. And, he thought PObama’s speech in Kansas was amazing, too. Will have more on it tomorrow. He’s someone who’s earned my trust on what kind of a speech the President gave..not someone who’s paid to whine.
Naw. That dog won’t hunt. Center stage and take your bows. ;-)
Exactly. There’s a point where it’s about “bringing out the best” in others, and that starts with Chips!
Jacqueline O, I totally cosign your comment about Chipsticks “bringing out the best.” For me the best includes my other favorite person, BWD. I am so elated to see her post comments on this magnificent blog. On top of that, I truly love Chipsticks’ witty sense of humor.
Yay! A Chipsticks appreciation thread! Add me to the list, please…it takes a special kind of person to cheerfully produce and hold together a blog/board of so many different personalities, even though we all have a deep appreciation of PBO in common. Brava, Chips, we love you!
exactly. Center stage indeed.
Both! All! But, you started it, Chips. With your belief in this President and those wonderful pics in your photo journal. :P Mahalo!~
And, if this stupid award to Paul Ryan from Politico doesn’t clinch the recognition of their fawning gopolitico idiocy..nothing will. Good job on mocking their feeble attempt at awards.
The Award should go to President Obama and they would see that if they got their head outta you know where. Obamacare is the gift that keeps on giving.
Cha? Love ya girl ;-)
Si! Love ya back, superstar! :P
Modesty Blaise. :)
I totally concur. Chipsticks ROCKS!!!!@!!!!!!!!!!
You totally outdid yourself on the Politico spoof. This is exactly the level of “thinking” that would lead these idiots to choose Paul Ryan (?????!) as health care policy maker of the year. Did they just put a bunch of names in a hat and pick Ryan at random?. Makes more sense than choosing him on purpose. I think Krugman was too kind to these guys.
No, Jackie, when they want a loser to win, they fill the hat with no other names but his, then no matter which piece of paper they choose, the loser wins! Old old trick, and this crowd is just a bunch of old old tricksters. They think no one is paying attention, they think people don’t care. But that paradigm is dead now, only they don’t know it!
What a Day!
Thank you Mr. President :-)
Thank you Chipsticks - you are truly ONE OF A KIND :D
LOL.Great awards.
ugh!!! Lawry dedicating his entire first segment to Eye of Newt  ugh. thought I’d be hearing stuff about PBO as his opening segment. that was the most important thing to happen today. what an ass. :| he even had Coward Fineman on. had to switch stations.
I don’t understand Steve Benen’s assumption that there is still a large portion of the GLBT community is dissatisfied witb PBO. He must be talking about emoprogs, Pumas, and Dinos then. The gay pride parades held this spring and summer across the nation were highly supportive of the president and he has collected plenty of cash from the afluent gay community.
I agree. I think Benen has a distorted view of gay and lesbian support based on a few blogging emoprogs. They absolutely don’t represent a large portiono fthe GLBT community.
Exactly forus50. Where is he getting this impression? I have never seen any approval polls from the gay community published by anyone. E’m sure he doesn’t hang out with gays on a routine basis. I believe his statements were more opinion than facts based on the rantings of Rachel Maddow and Dan Choi. President Obama has done more for the gay community than any one human being on earth and that is a fact. If there are gays that can not see this miracle they have in the Whitehouse then they deserve any negative consequences that come their way if they do not support him for re-election. Obama/Biden 2012
Toure was on Last Word and at the end of his time on air he just had to say the Obama Administration was hypocritical because Hillary is telling other countries about Gay Rights…and this adminstration hasn’t 100% embraced Gay Rights and Gays are still being treated like second class citizens…Lawerence O’Donnell had to take him to school…Lawerence schooled Toure on how we are ahead of most countries re Gay Rights…
I was so disgusted with that whole segment. I watched the shows tonight to see how they reacted to the President’s speech. I was so disappointed by Lawrence and his focus on the GOP race. And when I saw Gaga screeching at President Obama, followed by Toure saying the Administration was hypocritical - as though people in this country are being killed by the government for being gay… I just shook my head. So disappointing.
hmmm……………….didn’t know all this happen on LOD. Again these gay representatives in the media probably don’t represent the majority of Gays. I have heard that the gay population can be racist as well. Go figure…….hate someone else when you have a rough time in society. MIND BOGGLING.
Maybe the LBGT will be more satisfied with Newt, Romney, Bachmann, Perry.
We have a dam good President right now and they all better realize that.
Exactly! Any of LGBT community who are mad @ Obama.. need to think about who the ALTERNATIVE is! If they think Willard, Newt, Bachmann & Perry are going to do them any favors.. they are blind! SMDH
As someome who left, with relief, a supposed Dem-supporting site a couple of years back because of anti-Obama bile from the extreme element of the LGBT movement, I can completely vouch for Steve Benen’s comments, he’s spot on - as ever.
Uncomfortable as it might be to acknowledge, there is a tension between a section of the gay and black communities, some in the gay community blaming African Americans for that Prop 8 vote in California a few years back - even though it seemed like Mormon money was the bigger issue (I’m not bashing Mormons, I have NO time for any organized religion!)
There remains a section of the Firebagger left that is gay and viciously opposed to President Obama - eg Greenwald, Choi and Arvosis - despite all the amazing progress that has been made for LGBT issues by this adminstration. I have my own theories about it all, let’s just say there is NOTHING President Obama could ever do to satisfy this wing of the LGBT movement, nothing at all.
I had an discussion with one of a lesbian friend (who is black) after the ’08 election…she spat out that bs about the voters were the reason why they were on the losing end of Prop 8…I told her it was their “poor” campaigning…they took for granted that CA is a liberal state, so they let those other folks get their message out in front early on in the campaign and they never recovered…they messed up!
Thanks Chipsticks for speaking Truth. For some reasons there are still many in the gay community who dislike President Obama, irrespective of all he has done to advance their rights.
By the way, a heartfelt congrats. on the wonderful work you’ve done with your blog. I am sure the over 6 million people, who visit here, feel the same as I do about this incredible site you’ve created.
Thanks Chips. Your explanation has opened my eyes. Haters are going to HATE I guess. No matter what you do to try and help their cause. What a shame.
Chips- you get the best snark award.
You nailed it.
Lol!
Welcome back, Mr. President!
GREAT snark, Chips!! That could so totally be GOPolitico’s front page, for sure.

I agree. It was too much.

Ot- recall Walker update-
http://www.wisn.com/r/29937613/detail.html
Frankly, it’s a fools errand. The dems just scraped by all those state senate recalls.
I wouldn’t call it a fools errand. Nothing is impossible. Look at what we chieved in Ohio. I am rooting Wiconsinites on and pray that they gather enough signatures by the deadline. I am surprised you would make a statement like that amk.
I’m looking at the political reality. Please look at the results of concentrated campaign just for a few state senate seats. It didn’t bring in the change that was desired (and is still desirable). And you think you can rustle voters enthusiasm in the entire state ?
amk, remember that most of those senate recalls were all done, by definition, in red-leaning districts. They were always going to be squeakers. The Walker recall, on the other hand, will be state-wide including the bluest of the blue Milwaukee and Madison areas… places that have been dying to voice their anger but haven’t been able to yet. And all this activity going into 2012 is keeping up the energy for the national ticket as well. Fools errand it definitely is not.
From the jovie’s piece
“The rate at which signatures are collected is slowing down, but most people expected that after the initial surge of people who signed the petitions as soon as they could.
Now the gathering process gets tougher, Wainscott said.”

It’s a question of voters enthusiasm, not just anger alone. The turnout in recall elections wasn’t that great either.

PARIS (Reuters) - Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner meets French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Paris on Wednesday to press for decisive steps towards resolving Europe’s deepening debt crisis as the region’s leaders prepare for a crucial summit this week.
Geithner voiced strong support for a Franco-German blueprint for an overhaul of the European Union (EU) treaty during a visit to Berlin on Tuesday, after credit rating agency Standard & Poor’s fired a second warning shot at the bloc in 24 hours by threatening to cut the credit rating of its EFSF rescue fund.

So apparently, I’ve been living under a rock. I thought the Iranians shot down our drone. Didn’t realize they captured one. How did they do? How do we get it back, how comes we can’t destroy it remotely? Where’s the self destruct butto?
There have been conflicting reports. I’ve heard that the plane fell from a great height, so there can only be pieces - maybe a few large pieces. And there’s suspicion why the Iranians haven’t released pictures to show it’s intact - since they’re claiming that it’s intact. I’ve also heard that they captured it, and the self-destruct malfunctioned. I haven’t heard anything definitive, though.
CNN had their reporter assigned to the Pentagon on earlier, who said the CIA had options to order it destroyed via a bomb or send somebody in to get it, etc., but since it’s in Iranian territory, that was all nixed.
None of that may be true; we may never know. But if there are no photos being tossed about by Iran, that sounds as though it’s not intact.
Also can’t believe we can’t remotely dismantle something that ultra sophisticated.
And, of course, the CIA and Defense Department won’t confirm whether the drone was being used over Afghanistan or the Iran/Afghanistan border and it strayed into Iran - or over Iran itself.
My brain is fragmented tonight - sorry. It was also stated that the CIA is worried the drone technology will be given to China or Russia by Iran. No kidding.
Yes, I heard this was the latest in stealth technology. Someone must be sweating bullets over this - maybe a few people.
Congrats, chips, on your MILESTONE. As they say you have come a long way BABY!
Al Giordano (on Facebook today)
If you’re surprised at today’s Gallup poll showing Newt Gingrich far ahead of Romney and the other candidates for the GOP nomination for president, you probably missed my April 9, 2025 story telling you this is exactly what was going to happen! I told you this 20 months ago. I think he will very likely be the nominee. And I’m telling you today that 11 months from now Obama will be reelected to a second term…

Thanks for posting this little tidbit from Al. I really miss his smart commentary about our domestic electoral politics. Wasn’t he the one who coined the wonderfully descriptive term “poutrage” for members of the PL?
Thanks. I remember that Al’s post. I’ll take Al’s prediction over any of teh pundtwtis and pollsters including nate silver.
Congratulations our fierce, funny, ferocious Chips, blogger extraordinaire, who has created the best community for Obamacrats, Obamabots, on the webs. Your dedication, humor, and perseverance is legend, much like that of our president. So thanks! On to the next million and four more for 44.
Sorry I’m late, but congrats on the 6 million plus hits! Chipsticks, you do an amazing job.
Congratulations. My go to place after Jackeens and Al Rodgers quit certain blog sites. IT is a lot of work and I appreciate your dedication to the president. We have the front row sits with your blog Chips.
Congratulations Chips! You are the greatest, and I am so proud of you. Thank you for the professional that you are. I am so proud of our President. I think of him as a son. In fact, I cannot bear to hear any negative comments about him. That is why I watch all of his speeches on c-span TV, c-span.org, or whitehouse.gov. I refuse to listen to any pundit try to interpret what I have just heard. Our President is the most articulate person on the face of this earth, and I can certainly understand what he is saying when he makes a speech.

Speaking of Politico…..They just got punked. They received a fax supposedly from SEIU saying they were withdrawing their endorsement. Tweeted the story and then found out it was a hoax. DUH. What a bunch of MORONS.
Someone tweeted and said that SEIU will be sending out a formal statement reconfirming their endorsement. Just goes to show the disastrous state of the media.
Forget the old “two sources” or “doublecheck” rules - not when they are trying to stir trouble and/or hurt the President.
They are useless in the grand scheme of things.
Common sense should tell them to check this story out first. They are so pressed for the scoop and to trash Pres.Obama that they would just run with anything.
Devils in the details, but this sounds good-
WASHINGTON - House Republicans intend to propose a gradual increase in Medicare premiums for wealthy seniors to help cover the cost of renewing Social Security payroll tax cuts and benefits for the long-term unemployed, officials said Wednesday.
The precise details remain to be worked out as the leadership consults with rank-and-file Republicans about the legislation, which has grown significantly in recent days and is expected on the House floor next week.
GOP officials described the plan on condition of anonymity because no final decision has been made.
In addition to the extension of payroll tax cuts and jobless benefits that

Oh, Chips! You have done it again. You must have a line right into Politico! I imagine they are upset that you have preempted them. Krugman really nailed them too.
I am still soaking in the President’s speech today. It was so powerful! Good night.
Congrats Chips on hitting the 6 million mark!! I love this blog and the people. Y’all keep me informed and laughing.
I just finished watching the speech and it was brilliant. I’m surprised that some of the regular TODer’s didn’t point out that PBO smacked the side of the podium. Since you guys have pointed it out, I always wait too see if he does it or not. He did it today!! So, not only did we feel it, he felt it too! I love it!
I didn’t see that! I’m going to go watch it again - I’ve been trying to keep up today with TOD, twitter, good articles, even watching these silly MSNBC shows (which I won’t do again). I’m going to end the night watching the President and Hillary’s speeches. Get some good karma for the evening. Good night! :)
He did LadyTNT! Thought it was just me!!!
“PBO smacked the side of the podium.”

Did anyone see that jackass Michael Moore on that other jackass Piers Morgan show? Moore was talking about how Obama was getting more money from Wall St. than all the GOP candidates combine. He went on to say more trying to imply that the President was control by Wall St. and how we the people wanted to know why none of the people no Wall St. haven’t been sent to jail. Moore and Morgan is a disgrace.
Michael Moore single-handedly supports the fast food industry.
Hahahahahahaha. You can toss in his buddy Mark Knoller on that list.
am I wrong for laughing on that one? lolol
I guess Piers finally got his wish, huh?
Ta, ta y’all.
Wall Street loves Mitt Romney almost twice as much as it loves President Obama, a new analysis of campaign finance reports shows.
Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and GOP presidential candidate, has raised $7,521,705 from employees and executives of Wall Street firms.
Obama—who has become deeply unpopular among many Wall Street executives during his term in office—has raised just $3,899,122 from the same group.

Americans United for Change, a labor-backed Democratic group, is going up tomorrow with a campaign driving home the image of Mitt Romney as a ruthless capitalist, and using the image of the iconic Wall Street raider, Gordon Gekko.
The campaign includes a site, RomneyGekko.com, which quizzes visitors on whether Gekko or Romney said a given quote, an @RomneyGekko Twitter feed, and plans to show up at Romney’s high-dollar events.
Also, fake ads, like the one above, “Morning on Wall Street.”

Dec. 7 (Bloomberg) — The White House and Pentagon are near agreement on a draft five-year defense budget that flattens expenditures though 2017, with the lowest war spending since 2004, according to an Office of Management and Budget document.
The OMB also endorses a Navy plan to delay by two years start of construction on the Huntington Ingalls Industries Inc. CVN-79 John F. Kennedy aircraft carrier, and provides $508 million to bankroll the new U.S. Office of Security Cooperation in Iraq. OMB said the White House has yet to decide on whether defense civilian employees and military personnel will get a pay raise.
Defense spending in 2013 would be reduced 1 percent from this year’s pending $525.3 billion budget request before growing annually 1.8 percent in 2014, 2.3 percent in 2015, dropping to 1.9 percent in 2016 and increasing 2.2 percent in 2017, according to the 23-page document, a Nov. 29 OMB “pass-back” budget to the Pentagon. Bloomberg News obtained the document.
“This is the first time the Obama Administration has proposed a defense budget for the coming year that is less than the previous year,” said Todd Harrison, a defense budget analyst for the non-partisan Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments in Washington.

Hi Chips, Congratulations on reaching the 6 million hit milestone. Here’s to many more (raises glass~ yeah I know it is on 6:30am).
Pres Obama was amazing as usual. Great day !!!!!!
Congrats on the $6 mil milestone.
Know what they say about bees to honey- you’re that honey and we’re the bees and hopefully busy ones!
Great ,great job day in day out and I do believe that you know it is really, really, really appreciated. Thanks so much.

Bravo, Ms Chips, onward to 7 mil and more!
LAWRENCE, Kan. — Kansas Jayhawks basketball coach Bill Self had a chance to talk hoops with Barack Obama during the president’s trip through Kansas on Tuesday.
Self said he received an email from Obama’s staff inviting him to a speech being delivered in Osawatomie, Kan., a small town about 60 miles from the University of Kansas campus in Lawrence.
Self initially declined the invitation because of the Jayhawks’ game Tuesday night against Long Beach State, but he wound up meeting Obama before the president delivered a speech that touched on the economy and began to lay the groundwork for his re-election.
“You know, pretty cool. I don’t suppose he emails everybody,” Self said. “So I emailed back and said, ‘Sorry, I have to respectfully decline. We have a game and we have to practice.’ And they said, ‘Well, you could come to the meet and greet.’ ”
Obama asked that Self go last so that they could spend a little extra time discussing hoops.
Obama is a big basketball fan who regularly plays in pickup games, and he’s attended numerous games during his time in office, including a matchup last month between North Carolina and Michigan State that was played on an aircraft carrier in San Diego.

I don’t go to the Orange site except in exceptional circumstances like when a great friend sent me this link and insisted I read it.
It was a good one and would be useful in rebutting all those ridiculous claims about the majorities President Obama had and really puts into perspective just how amazing his achievements have been.
The post was written to call the RNC Chairman out on all of his nasty vile lies and highlight just how bad David Gregory is as well.
Anyone who still goes there may find it useful.
Good Morning TODers. Boy o boy do I looooooooooove twitter and my twitter TODers. You people are on fire calling out BS of the GOP. So much fun rebutting and calling out lies with evidence and having those media liars eat crow. :D

Morning! I just found this from my readings this morning……wow, what a difference a President and party make…..considering all the judicial nominees that have been blocked for PBO, I found this:
Speaking of which, your quote of the day: “I can’t thank Jon Kyl enough for making sure the judges I nominate get a fair hearing and an up or down vote on the floor of the United States Senate.” (President George W. Bush, November 28, 2025)
Jon Kyl….Dick of the Year.
