        OK. Here you go.

A drunk that smelled like a brewery got on a bus one day. He sat down next to a priest. The drunk’s shirt was stained, his face was full of bright red lipstick and he had a half-empty bottle of wine sticking out of his pocket. He opened his newspaper and started reading. A couple minutes later, he asked the priest, “Father, what causes arthritis?”

“Mister, it’s caused by loose living, being with cheap, wicked women, too much alcohol, and contempt for your fellow man,” the priest replied.

“Imagine that,” the drunk muttered. He returned to reading his paper.

The priest, thinking about what he had said, turned to the man and apologized: “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to come on so strong. How long have you had arthritis?”

“I don’t have arthritis, Father,” the drunk said, “but I just read in the paper that the Pope does.”

Australian official clarifies remark Romney used to criticize lack of leadership in US

    —————————————————–

SAN FRANCISCO — Australia’s foreign minister says he wasn’t criticizing America when he spoke of a nation “in decline” during a private conversation with Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Foreign Minister Bob Carr and other Australian officials said Monday that Carr was praising American economic strengths during Sunday’s meeting. The meeting was kept secret until Romney shared Carr’s comments with donors later in the day.

“He said America is just one budget deal away from ending all talk of America being in decline,” Romney said, while addressing roughly 250 donors at San Francisco’s Fairmont hotel. “I said, ‘Can I quote you on that?’ and he said, ‘Yes.’”

Seizing on the remark to criticize a lack of leadership in Washington, Romney added that Carr “led the talk of America being in decline.”

Thanks to reasonable commenters re: Chuck Todd today.

I was so mad at him this weekend for nastily saying that PBO’s “Firms” was “nasty,” I was inclined to be skeptical of anything he says. I think I misunderstood his tweet today (like BWD did) to imply that “The Choice” ad was negative in tone, when in fact he may have been saying exactly the opposite. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

The Guardian UK has nicely summarized the impact of sending money overseas: “Wealth doesn’t trickle down – it just floods offshore.” All Dems running for office need to educate the public on this.

Bringing this over because it tickles my funny bone that while the reporters say Hollywood HAS ABANDONED PRES. OBAMA!!!! Here’s Hollywood stepping up time and time again in droves! 😆

First George Clooney and Sarah Jessica Parker, and now, stars from HBO’s cult-classic series “The Wire” are getting in on the fund-raising act for President Obama’s reelection campaign.

According to an invitation posted on BarackObama.com, supporters of the president’s second charge at the White House can visit the Martha’s Vineyard home of Judy and Ron Davenport on the evening of Aug. 15 to mingle with cast members from the HBO drug drama.

Would-be attendees can score tickets for $500 per person, or if they’re feeling especially flush, they can join the host committee at $2,500 a pop. Proceeds will go to the Obama Victory Fund, a joint fund-raising committee comprising Obama for America, the Democratic National Committee and several state Democratic parties.

Why “The Wire”? It’s apparently one of Obama’s favorite shows, although the president isn’t slated to attend that evening, according to the Sunlight Foundation. Meanwhile, Politico mentioned a lineup that included Jamie Hector, Clarke Peters (pictured), Wendell Pierce, Andre Royo and Sonja Sohn as some of the show’s stars expected to stump for Obama at the Davenports’ house.

“The Wire” fund-raiser was just one of three reported events making headlines on Monday. Nathan Lane is planning an Aug. 24 fund-raiser in Bridgehampton, N.Y., with co-hosts Julianne Moore, Edie Falco and Jane Holzer. Vice President Joe Biden is scheduled to attend Lane’s “East End for Obama” event, which will cost from $500 to $10,000 and will feature a performance by James Taylor, according to the New York Post.

Finally, not to be outdone, mega-producer Harvey Weinstein is teaming up with Vogue top editor Anna Wintour for a joint fund-raiser in Greenwich, Conn., on Aug. 6, the Post reported Monday. Joining the guest list for Wintour and Weinstein’s party comes at the considerable cost of $35,800 per booster.

Do you think he could keep up with PBO’s schedule if by some stretch of the imagination he did become President? PBO always bounces down the steps bright eyed and ready for whatever. He always has time to stop and say a kind word and give hugs. He’s never wooden or impatient. That’s in addition to all his duties as President, Commander in Chief, Referee of Congress and Chief Comforter. Romney could never do it all. He’s not in it to serve. People like Romney are in it to be served. It would be all about perks and kickbacks and feeling powerful for him.

Warner Bros. CEO Barry Meyer to Host Michelle Obama in Latest Hollywood Fund-raiser

The president’s re-election campaign adds three L.A. dates in August featuring the first lady and vice president.First Lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden are both scheduled to hit the Los Angeles fundraising scene next month, and the Obama re-election campaign is working to get the most out of their visits by adding events to their schedules.

Along with a family-oriented fundraiser at the Beverly Hills home of singer and designer Gwen Stefani on Aug. 12, the rirst lady also will be the guest of honor at an event later that day at the home of Warner Bros. CEO Barry Meyer and his wife, Wendy. Tickets prices to the latter range from $2,500 to $25,000.

The following afternoon, tech entrepreneur and executive Yolanda “Cookie” Parker, an Obama National Finance committee member, will co-host an “intimate luncheon” for the first lady in Ladera Heights, the hillside community that is part of the nation’s most affluent majority African-American census tract. Couples hoping to attend that event should plan on spending $25,000, while going on your own only will run $3,500.

Biden will be in L.A. on Aug. 3 for a fundraising reception at the home of entrepreneur and active Democratic donor Shoukat Hussain Ali. Tickets to that event go for $10,000 per person. Meanwhile, on Aug. 6, Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry and his wife, Berta, will host a private benefit concert for the president’s re-election. As befits an evening in the Santa Monica home of the Walt Disney Concert Hall’s designer, the concert’s musician will be super star cellist Yo Yo Ma. Ticket prices from $2,500 to $10,000 per couple.

WARNING: READING THIS ARTICLE WILL MAKE YOU FEEL DIRTY

    ————————————————-

Mitt Romney was in rare form today in California talking to those “We Did Build It” business folk. He really poured it on. It was shameful that President Obama has not met with his business council. And can you believe it after meeting with the families and first responders in Aurora, Colorado he has the nerve to do a fundraiser. And oh by the way Mitt Romney has spend his career in business he’s not a career politician like some people. You get the picture. Mitt’s lips were moving so he was lying a lot. It really is remarkable to read this article and not ask yourself if Mitt Romney needs therapy. What else could it be? There is something seriously wrong with this man. And on top of that he is seriously dangerous. The urge to take a shower will be overwhelming.

    Romney’s twisted road on abortion

    By John D. Nichols

    —————————————-

Will Saletan of Slate.com wrote an exhaustive piece on the path Mitt Romney took while determining his stand on Abortion. Saletan chronicles how it began in 1963 with the death of a woman who was close to the Romney family, from an illegal abortion which he mentioned in a debate with Senator Ted Kennedy. Saletan also found that Romney commissioned a poll in 1986 before running for election which found that a pro-life candidate could not win a statewide election in Massachusetts. The poll came before Romney took a position, though Saletan does not say Romney took the position based solely on the poll.
    .
    .
Saletan’s piece is long but fascinating as is the almost 7-minute video of Romney’s changed positions on abortion linked to the article. Will Saletan joined Lawrence O’Donnell Monday night in “The Spotlight”.

That was an extremely irresponsible statement from Joe Scarborough. You know a certain number of people with blue eyes kill people. That doesn’t mean that all blue eyed people are dangerous. As if these kids don’t have enough to deal with without being branded as potential killers. There are hundreds of thousands of people in the US on the Autism scale and very few serial killers. You know what? It might just be the guns.

I listened to Milt Shook’s podcast this weekend and he was talking about the splicing that Mitt Romney did to President Obama’s words. He made a good point. President Obama is one of the most skillful politicians we have ever seen in this country . He’s running for a second term to finish what he has started. It just doesn’t make sense that President Obama would say what Mitt Romney is accusing him of saying. It just doesn’t make any sense. It’s not logical. It only makes sense to the folks that would not vote for him no matter what. But you have to believe the independents and other Americans who have seen and heard President Obama for the last three and a half years would have to say – you know that doesn’t really sound like something that President Obama would say. In fact, I have heard him say the exact opposite. That’s exactly the point that Elizabeth Warren was making in that viral video. That Mitt Romney just can’t be trusted to tell the truth.

so i totally love Lawry’s show tonight. it didn’t focus on the criminal from Colorado, unlike every other show on tv. He went on with politics as usual and I really appreciated it. He saved the last segment to talk about the N(utty) R(eptard) A(sshats)’s president and about how he supports and enables “mass murderers.” Good stuff.

WSJ’s Crovitz: “Creating The Internet” And Getting Everything Wrong

    By Mitt Romney

    ———————————

You get the point: The people Crovitz credited for “creating the internet” are all on record saying how very important the government-created Arpanet was to their research. And that’s exactly the point Obama was making. Nonetheless, Crovtiz concluded:

It’s important to understand the history of the Internet because it’s too often wrongly cited to justify big government. It’s also important to recognize that building great technology businesses requires both innovation and the skills to bring innovations to market. As the contrast between Xerox and Apple shows, few business leaders succeed in this challenge. Those who do — not the government — deserve the credit for making it happen.

Crovitz’s own sources and the people who actually created the internet would beg to differ.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor blasted that as “four years too late,” and said it was an example of an unkept promise from the president’s history-making campaign in 2008 – a theme Republicans have hit for weeks. The statement was put out by Romney’s campaign.

DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz hit back tonight.

“The only candidate in this race playing politics with America’s bipartisan support for Israel is Mitt Romney,” she said. “He recently pledged to ‘do the opposite’ of President Obama on Israel. If we take him at his word, that means a Romney Administration would slash security assistance funding, abandon Israel at the UN, de-fund the Iron Dome system protecting Israelis from terrorist rockets, and dismantle the hardest hitting sanctions Iran has ever faced. The American and Israeli people deserve to hear real ideas from Mitt Romney, not just cheap political rhetoric that’s completely devoid of facts.

“The bottom line is that President Obama has been a steadfast supporter of the Jewish State — and numerous Israeli leaders have spoken out publicly to agree,” she said.

Watching C-Span’s Romney and the Olympics. Mostly so far is just him giving speeches. His speaking style doesn’t grab and hold me, but he’s lots better at this than during his campaigning. He’s direct and authoritative. Perhaps it’s because he isn’t continuously lying like he is during his campaign.

Actually – he IS continuously lying, exactly like he was doing during the campaign. Almost every word he utters is a lie, and I would challenge anyone to present a truthful statement he’s made in the last several months other than his description of his lemonade, “cold. wet. good”. Everything else is a lie.

You guys saw this, right? http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2012/07/23/570501/report-debt-limit-fight-cost-government-13-billion-in-2011/

REPORT: DEBT LIMIT FIGHT COST GOVERNMENT $1.3 BILLION IN 2011 | Republican opposition to raising the debt ceiling increased the government’s borrowing costs by $1.3 billion in fiscal year 2011, and costs will continue to rise in the future, a report from the Government Accountability Office found. The U.S. Treasury was forced to take varying actions to avoid hitting the debt limit before Congress raised it in August, forcing borrowing costs higher on multiple Treasury securities, the report found. And because many of those securities “will remain outstanding for years to come,” the borrowing costs will continue to rise in the near future. The debt limit fight also caused the first-ever downgrade of America’s credit rating, which Standard & Poor’s blamed on Republican unwillingness to raise taxes as part of a debt reduction deal.

So because Republicans threw a temper tantrum ABOUT PAYING THE BILLS WE ALREADY INCURRED!…they cost us this money AND the downgrading of the US credit rating. Fucking nutbags. They should NEVER be allowed to govern again. EVER.

AMEN CHARLIE CHRIST! I bet Florida is missing him now!!

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/charlie-crist-the-voter-id-mess-subverts-an-american-birthright/2012/07/20/gJQAzOCsyW_print.html

Our country has never solved anything with less democracy, and we’re far better off when more citizens can access the polls — no matter which party mobilizes the most voters to them. As governor of Florida, I extended voting hours and increased the number of days people could vote. I also restored registration rights for felons, years after starting that effort in the state Senate with a member of the opposite party.

I was a Republican at the time of those decisions, which didn’t make me many friends on my side. But when you do the right thing for the people, a political party’s concerns roll off your back quite easily.

The right to choose our leaders is at the heart of what it means to be an American. Our history books are full of examples to the contrary. When we send independent observers to monitor for voter fraud in banana republics, we derive authority from our self-regard as the ideal. When we hear of corrupt voting practices in foreign countries, where the ideal of democracy is nothing more than lip service, we feel good about ourselves.

It’s time to look right under our noses. It’s happening here at home. And it’s our responsibility to honestly assess the root of the problem — which requires doing so with as little partisan bias as we believe belongs in the administration of our elections.

We can’t be surprised every time it turns out that politics are involved in our politics. But neither can we be silent when our democracy is threatened in its name.

There are lines that should not be crossed; meddling with voting rights is one of them. It is un-American and it is beneath us.

      July 24, 2012 at 3:52 am

Thanks, df, for sharing this. Charlie Crist speaks Truth! What he says is what our so called 4th estate should be saying. Yes indeed, Charlie, “meddling with voting rights is…. un-American.” The GOP has embarked on using all sorts of nefarious schemes to deny segments of Americans the right to vote. The same way Southern states used poll-tax, literacy/understanding tests, and grandfather/good conduct laws, to deny African Americans the right to vote.

The GOP is doing all this simply because the vast majority of right wingers cannot accept the fact that the country elected an African American as President of the United States. Its ok for African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, etc., to serve in the military and die for the country; but no person of color should ever be allowed to be President of the United States. If that requires subverting democracy, right winger reason, so be it. As far as the right wingers are concerned, maintaining/restoring white supremacy is more important than preserving democracy.

What ho TOD Peeps! Getting in from my Monday night of phone banking and settling in to catch up on the happenings at TOD and do my emailing of links. A handful of folks I spoke to this evening were touched and grateful that PBO went to Aurora this weekend to comfort and support the community. Others had no idea he was even there (GRRR!). Also had 4 identified as Repugs on my call list tonight, 2 were no answers, 1 rudely hung up on me (YAY! I’ve arrived and will wear that as a badge of honor!) . The last one turned out to be a retired firefighter who is voting for PBO this time — YAY x2. Told me he was very upset by Mitten’s comments about firefighters and teachers and police officers and what the Repugs are doing in general by attacking unions. I asked him whether he was aware that a Republican firefighter just recently won lunch with the President and was voting him for the same reasons and that there was a video of his story. He said he hadn’t heard that. I didn’t have the link handy to give it to him over the phone. But I also told him that there was another contest where people could win an invitation to PBO’s birthday party in Chicago in August by donating to his campaign. He said and I quote, “Hot damn, I’m going to get in on that!” I hope he does and it would be funny and great if he won.

Can’t really explain it clearly but earlier phone bank sessions even my conversations with supporters were brief, supportive/enthusiastic even, but brief. I phone banked on Sunday. My local group does it twice a month, although come September, we’re supposed to do it every week; which I’m excited about!

There was a young man there in his 20’s doing the phone banking and he told me he finds his peers apathetic. I remember heariang this in 2008. This contradicts the young excited crowds I see when the President goes to colleges.

We called locally here in So. Calif. and Nevada. I had some repubs on my list in Nevada. They were rude. I guess the campaign wants to know if they can count on their vote or not. Wondering if their ignorant prejudice is coming out. I just can’t imagine.

I get so pumped up when I do phone banking. It was so cool, I got 2 people to come do phone banking in August. Also, one day while having lunch with a friend, I saw a woman with an Obama sticker on her car and remarked how I liked the sticker. As I have one too, we started talking and I asked if she wanted to phone bank, got her e-mail address, and now she’s supposed to come too. I love getting people fired up about our fantastic President!

Obama attacks on taxes and Bain hit Romney ratings

Sustained attacks by President Barack Obama’s campaign on Republican rival Mitt Romney’s business history and refusal to release more tax records appear to be working, a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed on Tuesday.

More than a third of voters who are registered to a party or as an independent said in the online survey that what they had heard about Romney’s taxes and his time at Bain Capital private equity firm had given them a less favorable impression of the Republican candidate.

And particularly worrying for Romney is that a large slice of independent voters — whom he needs to win the November 6 election — are also buying into the Obama campaign’s portrayal of him as a ruthless businessman who may be hiding something in his taxes.

“With three-quarters of registered voters saying they’ve heard at least a little about these issues, I would say the Obama campaign has been successful in raising them to the national conscience,” said Ipsos pollster Julia Clark.

So, not only did Romney use taxpayer money to bail out the Olympics, but that same money improved the roads and infrastructure around Romney’s Utah house that allowed him to sell his home for MORE MONEY. What a slimy POS.

    http://www.balloon-juice.com/2012/07/23/who-really-built-that/

In the recent past, say 10-12 years ago, the 2002 Winter Olympics were going to be held in Utah. By 1998 the effort was swamped by a bid rigging scandal. Folks in control of the Games were pushed out. New grifters were brought in and they brought in Mitt. He hired a team of lobbyists. And for slightly less than a $4 Million investment, these lobbyist convinced a GOP controlled Congress and the Bush Administration to bail out the Olympics with $1.5 Billion picked from the pockets of US taxpayers. Most of that money went to road construction projects around Northern Utah. Of the 10 major infrastructure projects that taxpayers paid for, four were near Deer Valley and Romney’s old home. Taxpayers spent about $70 Million for new infrastructure that increased the property values around Summit County. Deer Valley (and Mitt’s house) was in the middle of the profit zone. By the start of the 2002 Games the development boom was in full swing.
Romney’s patrons could imagine that their property values increased because of their hard work, but without the $1.5 Billion taxpayer bailout to build out the infrastructure in Northern Utah, their land would still be isolated, remote and not worth that much.

Always working the angle on how to get FREE STUFF to BENEFIT MITT. And then, he goes to the NAACP and Shits on their carpet and later brags about there is no Free Stuff EXCEPT for rich Unpatriotic Americans like THE LYING WILLARDS.

So, essence, R-money has been a grifter all his life, working all the angles to drain every pocket in sight to build his own bank account. Despicable is too soft a word for him. You’re right DF about getting this out. We have to be our own media.

Morning Joe is going to have Larry Kudlow on this morning to discuss the interview he had yesterday with Willard on CNBC. Kudlow loves Willard. Since Morning Joe cannot get Willard for an interview they are bringing on Kudlow to praise and promote Willard.

Mitt has to be the least appealing candidate of my lifetime, and that includes Nixon. And even Nixon had his good points and was able to do some good things for people. Everything I’ve heard about Mitt so far is self-serving.. And nobody has any genuine affection for him, and nobody can even tell a story about when he went out of his way to help them without them doing him a favor.

And he’s not just selfish, he’s also what some folks call a parvenu, a man without any culture or class or grace whatsoever. A lot of wealthy people support the arts or at least artists, try to be well read, show some interest in the wider world around them. Not Mitt.

I heard it. It was back handed by saying his previous ads were so bad by attacking Bain and using class warfare that this was an improvement.
