Respect

While we’re waiting for a resolution to all this madness, my most-loved photo(s) from 2012:

President Obama greets World War II veteran Archie Hackney, 90, of Newton, (Archie’s first greeting of a sitting president) after remarks at TPI Composites, a wind manufacturer in Newton, Iowa (May 2012)

Look how determined Archie was to stand, as a demonstration of his respect.

    Never play poker with Obama.

So this is where we are:

    1. The House GOP doesn’t have the votes for an amended bill, so
    2. Boehner will allow an up or down vote on the Senate bill, breaking the Hastert rule, which
    3. Means the bill will pass courtesy of the Democrats, with very few yes votes from the GOP. Therefor
    4. The GOP still loses, as they get no credit for keeping us from the “cliff”.
    5. The “Left” loses as well. It caterwauled, but their darlings Bernie Sanders and Ed Schulz were on board. The PL takes another hit towards irrelevancy.
    6. And now the civil war we’ve seen coming in the GOP is about to kick off. Boehner had better not get too comfy in the Speaker’s office. Jan. 3 should be interesting.

Here is Archie, a war hero, a survivor of much which is hard in life. He sees his President, he does not need to think twice, here is his President before him, so of course he stands.. Not to stand goes against every grain of decency and respect in his body. I weep to see these moments again.

This photo is one of my favorites as well; it shows so much. Decades after his service, this gentleman is still a soldier who recognizes his CIC and works hard to stand at attention. I see a man who has lived through some of the worst of our racial history, but who stands above it to show much respect. From PBO I see that special warmth that he always shows for his elders and I also see his recognition and respect for this old soldier. I see two men sharing a special moment that the haters never imagine can happen, but often does in various forms. This photo shows me that why we are not all that we need to be we are so much more than what we use to be.

    A Coup Before Our Eyes?
    by BooMan

I’ve been busy celebrating my son’s third birthday this afternoon, so I have had to do a bit of reverse engineering to try to ascertain how things unfolded during the day. As I understand it, the House caucus met once at midday and then again just after 5pm. Ryan Grim’s reporting relates to the first of the two meetings. Apparently, it became clear that there was a division in the leadership team, with Boehner pointing out that the Senate bill passed with overwhelming Republican support and Paul Ryan saying that he opposed the bill. Eric Cantor went further, arguing “vociferously” against the bill, and then going on CNN after the meeting to drive home the point. Rep. Tim Huelskamp of Kansas, who was recently stripped of one of his committee assignments, said that conservatives were “heartened” to see Cantor take on the Speaker in front of the whole caucus.

Yet, no one is really talking about today’s impasse as part of some kind of coup against Boehner. Jennifer Rubin suggested that Boehner should resign if he can’t get the bill passed, but she didn’t predict that he would. Her point was that he should step down if he can’t lead this group of miscreants. But I am not sure if it is his choice anymore. Losing the battle over Plan B was bad enough, but to have Cantor and Ryan openly defying him in today’s first caucus meeting has to be seen as a clear indication that his power is spent.

Try to imagine, if you can, Steny Hoyer and Jim Clyburn pulling a similar kind of stunt on Nancy Pelosi. It’s impossible to imagine. That’s why I think we are quite possibly witnessing less of a freak-out over the terms of the deal than we are seeing a palace coup.

It’s just hard to see how or why the GOP caucus would reelect Boehner as their Speaker if they so obviously do not trust him or want to follow his lead.

    • 164 Bobfr (@Our4thEstate)
      January 1, 2026 at 9:01 pm

As many of you know, I think the more important ‘coup’ is the one Leader Pelosi may well be engineering ;)

Saw your twitter on VAT - it is a rather regressive tax - hits the poor more than the rich - UNLESS basic items of life are exempted. We have it in Australia - called GST (Goods and services tax) 10% - basic food (but not restaurants or fast food - e.g. mcdonalds) are exempt. Medical exempt but not toiletries etc. So every item or service has 10% added. In UK they have different rates on different items - but they all keep going up. I think income tax is fairer - governments find VAT/GST easier because there are few loopholes (although the “cash economy” on services can avoid the tax).

      • 178 Liberal Librarian
        January 1, 2026 at 9:24 pm

That’s what I gathered, that VAT was a pretty regressive tax. In California we have sales tax, but certain things like food and medicines are exempted.

From the time the Bush tax cuts were set to expire on 12/31/12, this reckoning was a-coming. The writing has been on the wall for a long time now. The fact that the maniacal teapublicans spun this always-losing hand into such ridiculous political theater was to be expected as they truly can’t help themselves at this point. I see on my Twitter TL that PBO will make a statement after the house casts the final vote tonight at 11:30PM.

And after listening to the house - that will be a wonderful contrast. I still cannot believe that Boehner gave up on finding a solution - he really is the worst speaker for many many moons

This is so much fun….I do mean colloquy here. I am on my third batch of popcorn. I plan to stay up all night. What a way to bring in a new year.
    Keep it coming, TOD!

I agree. This is some BS. It reeks of “Good news for John McCain” and “Romney ahead in polls” delusional type thinking.

They’re so desperate to give any Repub a “win” A lose for Cantor and the Tea Party is not good news for the Republican party whose existence since 2009 is mostly about the Tea Party.

There are some lovely tweets on the @markhalperin discussing where his brain is currently located - much like McCain’s in 2008

Familia de Magapie flying from Albuquerque to D.C. tomorrow. Attending the swearing in ceremony for our new D congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham and our new D senator Martin Heinrich who moves from congress and defeated the abominable nasty Heather Wilson. Me, wifey and our 11 year old ARE EXCITED!!!!!! We were also cleared for the WH tour, which shouldn’t be a big deal but isn’t easy anymore for obvious reasons. I mean, hah! the WH TOUR is a HUGE deal to us and the absolute MAIN THING for me!!! LOVE YOU GUYS!!!

My husband and cspan on for awhile I asked him to mute it. These fools that call in, one lady said she was a democrat but that after 5 years of Obama’s spending and going on vacation she was leaving the party. What a fool, she was no democrat. I just can’t handle these people. Thank goodness we have TOD otherwise I would be insane!

Cspan has been known to have Paid GOPers calling in pretending to be other things during times like these.

mtmarilyn - I was just alerted when I was posting down thread that you heard that same nutjob on C-Span. I’m extending a figurative hand to you to hold so we both don’t go insane hearing this crap. Normally, I would have not listened to any of those C-Span callers, but I was trying to watch the House proceedings.

Okay, I’m shaking it off - listening to Nancy Smash. AT LEAST WE GOT PRESIDENT OBAMA RE-ELECTED! Praise the good Lord for that!

Chips these threads are going at warp speed today. I went over to twitter for a few minutes and came back and we have over 200 comments on this thread. Y’all are rocking and rolling today :)

Oh, Chips, tears just squirted out of my eyes, seeing that fine gentleman standing for the President. No matter what insanity he faces or we face for him in the current climate, President Obama must know the beauty in that act, which the photographer captured and you brought to us.

To the contrary, and sorry to even make this comment, did anyone else hear that bitchhead woman from the south on C-Span a few minutes ago? She called in to say she was a Democrat until five years ago, but isn’t any longer because of this man who “doesn’t even have the education” to be President, and won’t show his birth certificate, and caused her family to go bankrupt because they used to have eight black workers but that’s been reduced because they just wanted to quit and go on welfare and get food stamps, and whatever other bullshit she was coughing up from wherever she stores her hate-filled, racist bile.

There’s really nothing to say after that.

Must have been the same RWNJ plant that MtM just referred to….

        January 1, 2026 at 9:57 pm

Yes, I just looked at MtM’s comment - same lady she was referring to. I forgot the part about the President’s being on elaborate vacations all the time to Martha’s Vineyard and Hawaii. Cringeworthy.

Also, her math skills are somewhat weak - like her mind. Hope she enjoys her payola! Imbecile.

Haven’t heard the word “payola” in a while, so I just did a little nervous laugh (because I know I shouldn’t laugh) over here. Which is good because it’ll bring me out of the hellhole that lady on C-Span was pushing me in! So, thanks, Pamela!

So who comes out on top in the House Cantor or Boehner? Sounds like Boehner is taking the youngster to the tool shed. He’ll get some of Cantor’s crew to break. That’ll leave Cantor and the Teabutts out in the cold, rendered useless and irrelevant. Boehner gets to keep his gavel, Cantor learns a valuable lesson, you gotta take the head off a snake. Then there’s Ryan, Christie, Jeb, Jindal, and all the other 2016 hopefuls who’ve learned to keep their powder dry. They’re like, ‘wassup, did I miss anything?’
