      Congrats Dudette :)

Lovely new post, NW! Thank you!

      And …

Let us all remember that We The People OWN the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that the FCC provides to ABC, NBC, & CBS (and others) to broadcast radio and TV.

It’s long past time that we demand their licenses be revoked and issued to one or more enterprises willing to use the public’s spectrum to promote the public’s good.

This is not the first time I’ve tweeted (and written letters) on this issue, and, after tonight’s affront to our President and our Fellow Citizens, it will certainly not be the last.

#BackBarack … and be forever grateful he was willing to serve ….

This is absolute truth, dudette. They will not miss a moment of their Thanksgiving vacation and as they toast the courage of the ‘immigrant’ Pilgrims on the First thanksgiving and gorge themselves on food, they will utterly miss the irony.

And here is some important (and FUN) data: Sun moves into Sagittarius (0 degrees of course) (party, party) on Saturday 22 November 2014 at 4:38amEST (1:38amPST). New Moon follows shortly afterward at 0.07 Sagittarius conjunct the Sun at 7:19amEST (4:19amPST). I might add I think PBO’s address today was excellently timed, astrologically speaking. New Moon = New Hopes, new energy, and many millions will be riding on the joy which accompanies today’s action by our finest leader. Ever.

Re Axelrod’s tweet, Republicans are such expert deceivers that they won’t make promises to repeal in this instance. They’d simply promise whatever works, then try repeal when/if they got in (as in ‘Read my lips. No new taxes’).

you don’t even have to go back that far. ‘Member The Orange one in 2010? and the “Laser focus on jobs”? and then passing bills to rename post offices and repealing Obamacare when they weren’t “on break”?

    Has this been posted??

    http://www.thenation.com/blog/191049/when-networks-snub-presidential-address-democracy-biggest-loser

How has the American circumstance so decayed in a nation that once so well understood the wisdom of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s observation that “democracy alone, of all forms of government, enlists the full force of men’s [and women’s] enlightened will”?

There’s plenty of blame to go around. But let’s start with broadcast media that are so indefensibly irresponsible that television networks cannot take time away from their relentless profiteering to present a short address by the president of the United States—an address announcing an executive order on an issue that is universally recognized as consequential and controversial.

ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox—four major broadcast networks—all declined to interrupt prime-time programming to air President Obama’s Thursday evening address on immigration policy. Though cable news channels, public television stations and Spanish-language stations cleared time for the president’s speech, the big broadcast networks stuck with fare such as The Biggest Loser.

The absurdity of the choice made by the networks was only heightened by the fact that the network-aligned local television stations that were set to broadcast entertainment programs rather than the president’s address just pocketed hundreds of millions of dollars for airing the slurry of negative campaign commercials that have become the crude lingua franca of our politics. A good many of those commercials focused on the issue of immigration. And the stations that aired those ads would gladly accept more cash from groups seeking to attack or embrace the president’s position.

The result is a democratically dysfunctional imbalance where viewers of the major broadcast networks and of local television stations that carry their programming can get more information from paid political advertisements about a policy than from the policymaker himself.

As y’all know, I’m in Nashville. Watching 9:00 Fox News. Did a report from Fort Campbell about an entire unit being totally disbanded. Three times in the report, reporter said that President Obama did this/made this decision. Or words to that effect. Get that? PO specifically makes decisions like that-what unit to cut from the Army. Stupid??

Also, at top of newscast was coverage of his speech. Interviews with Corker and Alexander-what you would expect. Worst president in history, weak, needs to resign- yes that!!!!! Can we say they are way off that deep end???!!!

This is a blow to the local community. It looks like 2,400 Army personnel will no longer be part of the military. Having grown up in a Navy town, I had no idea this could happen.

Sounds like this may be repeated in other areas of the country too as we exit from Afghanistan.

      http://www.tennessean.com/story/news/local/fort-campbell/2014/11/20/fort-campbell-lose-159th-cab-2400-soldiers/70007544/

      “‘No great surprise’

Area military and civic leaders have anticipated the announcement of the deactivation of the 159th CAB since March this year when the Army released a report indicating the loss of three aviation brigades.

At the time, Fort Campbell was the only post with two CABs, including the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade.”

At least PBO got the last laugh today, though apparently it sailed over the heads of GOP/MSM/Kochs:

PBO has never disappointed me. I am so glad I researched his voting record and decided to support him early on before 2008. The past actions predict future behaviors. PBO is a man of action. He acts on what he believes and does his best to keep his promises in whatever way he can legally manage it to produce the best results for Americans. We are used to politicians that take the easy route thus Lame Duck title comes to mind. Our guy is not that kind of person.

    November 20, 2025 at 11:42 pm

This is a very insightful piece, and contains some reminders that would serve us all well when we despair over the ugliness currently out in full force:

“It wasn’t just that [PBO] promised both bipartisan reconciliation and progressive change. It’s that Obama understood American history well enough to know that progressive change only arrives through bitter, divisive, even ugly, struggle.
    ….

In his second inaugural, he said, “Through blood drawn by lash and blood drawn by sword, we learned that no union founded on the principles of liberty and equality could survive half-slave and half-free.” Then he name checked “Seneca Falls, and Selma, and Stonewall,” places where powerful and privileged Americans ridiculed, arrested, beat, and killed other Americans for demanding equal rights.

The part of Barack Obama that knows how change really happens in America has long been quietly at war with the part that wanted to stay on good terms with Republicans, and with powerful elites in the business and financial worlds.

Yes, Obama is a pragmatist. Yes, he is professorial. Yes, he wants to be liked by his ideological opponents and by the powers that be. But he also knows that were he in his twenties today—a young man of color with a foreign parent and a foreign-sounding name—he might be among those activists challenging the vicious injustice of America’s immigration system. When Obama talked about “the courage of students who, except for the circumstances of their birth, are as American as Malia or Sasha; students who bravely come out as undocumented in hopes they could make a difference in a country they love,” he wasn’t only comparing them to his daughters. He was comparing them to himself.

For progressives, this was always the real promise of Barack Obama. It was the promise that a black man with a Muslim name who had worked in Chicago’s ghettos—a man who had tasted what it means to a stranger in America—would bring that memory with him when he entered the White House. It’s a promise he fulfilled tonight.”
