In South Carolina, a state with a long and deep history of racial discrimination against African Americans, three white law enforcement officers have been indicted in recent months on charges stemming from incidents in which they shot — and in two cases, killed — unarmed black men.

The release of the November jobs report Friday morning offered good news for the economy writ large (big job growth, still to be adjusted) and therefore for President Obama. Obama has now observed the release of about three-quarters of the jobs reports that fell under his jurisdiction — 23 more until the presidential election! — meaning, as a corollary, that we now have a pretty good sense of how his tenure will be viewed. Because the economy is so big and so diverse, individual numbers tend to get hard to see in comparison to the overall trend. Health care stands out (here including social assistance workers); it has seen growth month after month after month.

    Wisconsin?? With that KOCH bought clown as governor? Dare I say I’m suspicious - ‘independent investigations’ run like McCulloch’s grand jury, or done by a panel of biased citizens? Would be nice if they are doing it right, but I lost confidence in Wisconsin’s government and voters years ago. Will wait and see what news surface from there before I start my happy dance.

    Now we have to keep this movement going. America will be majority “minority” in 30 years, and white folks have to a) accept that fact, and b) educate themselves on how to live with that. The good thing is that the white Americans who will be around in 30 years will have grown up as one of a multitude of ethnic hues. It’s the whites living now still operating under the paradigm of majority status who are the issue.

              I know I can’t attract that kind of support, Gail, and that is why my humble and only request to President Obama is that he launch #TruthAndReconciliation by eliciting support among all the White American leaders whom he has ready access (many of whom are his personal friends).

              Just imagine if Bill Gates, Nancy Pelosi, Warren Buffett, Kathleen Sebelius Tom Hanks, Katy Perry, Bruce Springsteen, Barbara Boxer, George Clooney, etc began the conversation with their fellow White Americans.

              That’s what it’s going to take to generate the massive broadcast, online, movie, and other messaging media filled with the actual history of America’s roots - roots of genocide toward Native Americans and exploitation of America’s vast natural resources on the backs of African slaves and their African American sons and daughters.

              As part of that #TruthAndReconciliation process we need to develop the history narrative that every American child learns - not the crap propaganda that currently is the ‘American History’ K-12 pedagogy.

              Woven into those history lessons should also be an accounting of the exploitation of Hispanic migrant workers, as well as, other immigrants (Asians, Irish, Italians, etc).

              But, the overarching context is ENSLAVEMENT to the benefit of the few. African slaves and their African American progeny are those most exploited and whose suffering persists to this day. That suffering, in all of its manifestations, must be remedied, once and for all time.

              Our Founders wrote lofty words of equality while OWNING slaves. That fundamental hypocrisy, that sin against humanity has always been OWNED by WHITE Americans, and on that FACT #TruthAndReconciliation must focus, unrelentingly.

            I like both your focus and your suggestion, Bfr. We absolutely need specific action in order to start the climb out of the valley of racism, and a #TruthAndReconciliation forum could be an integral part of the overall solution. My question in this instance is, given that you readily admit that Whites need to ‘own’ this, ‘Wouldn’t it be more in keeping with your goal to direct your suggestion to a White person in leadership or in politics?’ VP-Biden comes to mind right away, but I’m sure there are others who would be able to get this off the ground. Off the top of my head, I think PBO could/should be allowed to focus on the ‘current’ aspect of things, VP-Biden, or whoever, could lead on the ‘past’ aspect (i.e. truth & reconciliation), and so on, and so on…

              I’ve been conflicted because I know it must be White Americans who lead and sustain #TruthAndReconciliation.

              I wanted President Obama to know that, in no way, is this on him or any other person of color to lead and sustain - that’s the core message of both of my letters to him.

              Thus, my only request to him is one grounded in the reality that as President, if he were to ask VP Biden (or any/all of the type of folk I mention in my reply to Carol, above), they’d likely jump at the request. It’s also grounded in the reality that I doubt if VP Biden or any of the other White luminaries it’s going to take to get this movement underway would pay attention to my request. Wish it were otherwise, but it ain’t.

                  pf, I’m definitively not implying, suggesting or otherwise stating that ‘white folks’ are going to ‘lead’ ANYONE other than THEMSELVES out of our (I’m white) 400+ year history of genocide, slavery and ongoing culture of inequity.

                  My message is that #TruthAndReconciliation is about White Americans leading White Americans out of our abyss of fear, hatred, and exploitation of people of color and our denial of our ‘privilege.’

                  Our fellow POC Americans have one key role - HOLD US (White Americans) ACCOUNTABLE.

                  I hope that clarifies my position.

                Hiya, Bobfr, I’m finally getting back to you. One drawback of this forum is that when in dialogue, participants often criss-cross each other, or some are slow to get whatever is bubbling in their head down coherently. :grin: I was gobsmacked to see how many potentially influential names you were able to list without blinking, while I could only come up with VP Joe. :)

                I think you are underestimating your power as a citizen and a war vet in the midst of the current reality.

                a) Given the climate in W-DC, you and I both know that if the Truth and Recon idea came from PBO its chance of implementation would be far less likely than if it came from VP-Joe. He could sell it to his colleagues in a totally different way than PBO could - a respected White, down to earth politician who undoubtedly has lots of personal tales he could add would not be seen as criticizing his ‘betters’.

                b) If I remember correctly VP Joe also responds to correspondence from time to time, and I would think the chances of your letter getting to him may just be higher than getting to PBO because his volume of mail is, I’d guess, smaller. Also, I don’t doubt that he is as concerned about what is happening now as PBO and would love to be heavily involved in the solution(S). In addition, he has more time on his hands, so to speak to oversee something like this. I also remember he was the person charged with the safe handling of TARP. {Can you see I’m leaning heavily on you to tap VP Joe? :grin: :grin: I’d start your letter to him at the Zimmerman section. }

                c) As a result of the ongoing action that’s been on display I do believe you could easily send your letter to 3 or 4 of the people you listed and be hopeful that they would also consider your request seriously. I can’t imagine them wanting the status quo to continue, or the anger for justice to erupt.

                Geez louise, just reread that and realized I hadn’t planned to go on so long. Notwithstanding, I seriously wish you would send your (abridged) letter to VP-Joe and maybe another edited version to 2 or three others from your list of names. I say edited because I wouldn’t recommend a cc-ed version. Instead I’d opt for each letter being ‘individualized’ yet having the same core. { :grin: I say this because I don’t read email that looks like it is intended for everybody’s eyes. If it’s not ‘personal’ I don’t have the time to bother with it.}

                      Letter to VP Biden has been sent. Have also sent a missive to Tom Hanks. Will wait a day or two to see if anyone responds (totally realizing the low probability) and, if not, will pursue others. Will not stop because when I state that this is “On Us,” I mean this is “On Me” just as much as it is on any other White American.

            Bob, this is a terrific letter and I especially love the statement that white America will “shed the shackles of fear and overthrow their real enemy, the kleptocrats, when the majority of Americans learn to love and protect their black (POC) Fellow Americans.” Fear is a shackle, just as surely as if the fearful person were in prison or in the control of someone else. Fear makes you blind to reason, deaf to morality and unfeeling in the face of another person’s pain. When we give in to fear, we sell our souls and if we persist in the fear or actively cultivate it, we literally lose ourselves. Those Americans who run to purchase guns when a murder occurs or stockpile weaponry in their homes, as if they were under attack, have ceded their humanity to fear.

      I’m back again - I keep sifting in and out when I remember something I haven’t done. :grin:

      I like the way ideas sometimes come to different people in this village at around the same time. IMO this is ONE, of the elements needing introduction at this point in the protests, and it would be awesome if some grass-rooty person would introduce it. I think your ‘I vote and that matters’ could work, and there could be variations for those who did not vote - like ‘Vote! It matters”, etc. etc.

    I read the article that @3chicspolitico linked to on the front page, and the cops’ explanation on why they approached Rumain Brisbon’s SUV makes no sense at all.
    “Crump [Phoenix police spokesman] told reporters that the officer and his partner were responding to a burglary call about 6 p.m. Tuesday (8 p.m. ET) when a local resident told them that men in a black sport-utility vehicle were dealing drugs. The license plate number given by the resident matched a vehicle owned by a resident of a block where police were already investigating a report of loud music, Crump said, so the officer approached the SUV, whose driver got out.”

    The cops were already investigating a “a resident of a block where police were already investigating a report of loud music.”

    Police “investigate” loud music before 6pm??? WTH is that about?

        In the videographer’s defense, the article says the police blocked her exit from the store she was in — she and other bystanders were no doubt subject to arrest (or worse?) if they tried to intervene.

        Both Michael Brown and Eric Garner met their fates in broad daylight, which proves police no longer hide their racism under cover of darkness.

          Understood, Arapaho. But, in both cases, everyone on the scene could have been calling 911 and demanding response to a person dying. At least, those recorded 911 calls would have reflected humans trying to respond to intolerable behavior.

          You are correct. With Michael, Eric, Tamir … we are in the season of daylight shining on executions of black Americans via two modalities of lynching - guns and strangulation - with all three innocent victims allowed to ‘hang’ for prolonged intervals with ZERO intervention from bystanders.
