    “Scientists in Australia, home to some of the most poisonous creatures on Earth, have made an important discovery about spider venom that eventually could lead to a new class of painkillers. Spiders use their venom to immobilize or kill their prey. Researchers from the University of Queensland isolated seven peptides—the building blocks of proteins—in spider venom that blocked the molecular pathway responsible for sending pain signals from the nerves to the brain. One peptide in particular, from a Borneo orange-fringed tarantula, had the right structure, stability and potency to potentially become a painkilling drug, the researchers said. The study was recently published in the British Journal of Pharmacology.

    The medical community is eager to identify new medications to treat chronic pain, which affects about 15% of all adults, according to a 2012 study published in the Journal of Pain. Traditional painkillers such as morphine and widely used medications like hydrocodone can be addictive, and abuse of the drugs has soared in recent years, prompting stricter regulations from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. “Spider venom acts in a different way to standard painkillers,” said Jennifer Smith, a research officer at the University of Queensland’s Institute for Molecular Bioscience. Dr. Smith, one of the authors of the Australian study, doesn’t expect a painkiller derived from the venom will be addictive because it blocks a specific channel that transmits pain to the brain. Opiate painkillers, by contrast, block widespread opioid receptors on cells in the brain, spinal cord and other organs….continued”

    “Though they sound like a weapon in a super-villain’s arsenal, remote-controlled cockroaches are actually forces for good, according to the researchers who hacked the brains of the reviled bugs and bent them to the will of their human controllers. The key to the process is an “electronic backpack” that’s wired into the roach’s natural sensing mechanisms. By manipulating a remote control, not unlike one used for remote-controlled cars, researchers can guide the roach down a prescribed path. As North Carolina State University’s Tahmid Latif explains in this new video from National Geographic, “When we stimulate their right antenna, they think that there’s an obstacle to the right and it makes them turn left.”…

    NC State professor Alper Bozkurt dreams of deploying these remote-controlled roaches — BioBots, as he calls them — in humanitarian disaster zones. The enslaved roaches would use their natural agility and a small, unidirectional microphone array to work their way toward a sound source. For example, a person buried under a pile of rubble. The precise location of the person in need of rescue would be relayed from the roach, back to first responders. “They are moving about on their free will and we are just nudging them in appropriate locations of our interest,” Latif says…cont”

    “A new species of glass frog has been discovered with translucent skin so you can see its insides. The creature, named Hyalinobatrachium dianae, was found in the mountains of eastern Costa Rica and has a distinctive call. While most of its body is a brilliant lime green, like all species of glass frogs, the skin on its underside is see-though, making its organs easily visible….

    …Lead author of the study, Dr Kubicki said: Its advertisement call is quite unique…It’s different than any other species that has been discovered.’
    The study says the frog’s ‘advertisement call’ consists of ‘a single tonal long metallic whistle-like note with a duration of 0.40–0.55 s… and a dominant frequency of 3.35–3.44 kHz’. It’s likely the frog uses it to find a mate in the mountain forests. Dr Kubicki said that the amphibian sounds more like an insect than a frog, which may explain how experts missed it during their extensive survey…continued”

    The police officer who held back from shooting the suspect who had killed two people, yes he did a decent thing, but I have to wonder if that suspect were black, would he had shot him?

    Ha, Amateur!… Heck when I threatened to run away at 7 years old, my mother helped me pack my little pink suitcase, fixed me a bag lunch and gave me a map (I couldn’t read it, of course). I was kind of shocked that she didn’t beg me to stay, so I sat down about thought leaving for a long time… like 10 minutes or something.Then Star Trek came on and I changed my mind! :-D

      I did the same thing to my daughter was 3 and threw a tantrum. (We don’t do tantrums in my house). She insisted she was leaving and held her little hand, walked her to her room to select a change of clothes, extra underwear, helped her to pack her pink suitcase, gave a bagged lunch with a snack an some change for the bus and a phone call. Sent her right out the door. After 3 minutes of undisturbed self reflection while wailing on the front porch …. I guess she changed her mind.

      needless to say I have four kids and that scenario never happened again.

    i know that for many of us the roll out of the Clinton Campaign has not been easy …for many reasons….i must admit …my spirit has been dampen by this move to reset to Pre-Obama..but there can be no reset…we have all be affected….

    i saw the OFA organizing video…that reminded me what is possible ..that we are still moving Forward….that it is up to US…

    as this video reminds us Nothing is more powerful than a million voices calling for Change….Obots Forever! smilin
