In other words, some senators didn’t have confidence in the president’s words. Nor in Secretary Kerry’s. Both of them had clearly explained that it wouldn’t be possible to make other countries from the P5+1 restart from scratch and build another strong coalition for applying sanctions. It was ALREADY a tour de force , a couple of years back, to have convinced those nations to unite in a sanctions program.
But no, those Senators didn’t believe President Obama and Secretary Kerry. They had to hear it from the horse’s mouth.
I guess we have to be happy they’ve finally embraced the geo-political reality which the president and his team have had to work with.
Hopefully, those senators have enough clout they’ll be able to convince a few of their colleagues.
Then it will be only about politics. I’m confident that the president’s veto won’t be overridden. But I’m sure it will be with the MINIMUM of votes. There will be lots of calculations and trading behind the scenes… they’ll decide who has to vote with the president, and who can be “exempted”; who will be permitted to play it safe, to avoid making money donors angry and/or endanger reelection.
They want to be consulted. They whine when the president goes “without them”. But the minute they have to take risks, to take responsibility, they’re terrified.
OK, definitely GN now….
I love days like this one, when many diverse people can publicly tell PBO they really appreciate him and that they love and respect him.
I wish we could tell him this more often - not just on his birthday - because the load he carries is so huge yet he goes on with dignity, grace, and never complaining
