Great match just recently started watching although my sister and niece have been to the US Open several times even got themselves on tv so many times during one match folks around them wanted to know if they were celebrities, no celebrities just tennis lovers now I know why; oh well time for bed

Looks like the democrats can filibuster the deal.

This is a really, really vicious thread of tweets and I should be ashamed of myself for bringing it here.

    Stephen Colbert’s first show!

Mavis Staples, George Clooney, and some guy named Jeb! from Florida.

i’ve said from the beginning…jeb bush is “the chosen one” for the major power brokers of our current economy. they did the same kind of stuff with mitt rmoney. how on earth can anyone explain the appearance of someone polling around 10% being on one of the biggest nights in late night TV for the year. the dumb brother of the worst president in u.s. history on this particular show!?? it’s so obvious. stephen is willing to go along for the bigger picture of him having his show.

Political candidates have been on these network late-night shows for decades, not just during this toxic part of our election campaign history. The fun part was seeing Stephen let Jeb! make his own bed and lie in it, as I knew he would. He looked like a fool. And, to me, Jeb! - more than once - exposed his “nasty” underbelly on the show (which no doubt had a large audience), for any doubters who needed confirmation of why he’s at 10% or less. Worked for me. Also made me gag a little, but George Clooney was adorable, and the music was worth waiting for!

bush the third’s mere appearance on the show helped him. yes, i agree he sounds like a dumb republican talking point robot, but for the average low-info viewer, he seemed more legit with his appearance on the show, being the first historic show and all.

Have no interest in seeing Jeb Bush on Colbert show. The only reason I would watch the show if FLOTUS was going to be up there, or POTUS.

Imagine all the little girls watching the Williams sisters and seeing themselves winning on a tennis court someday. Such athletes!

oof. i feel colbert’s white house correspondents dinner was one of the best ever, if not the best. his “report” show was genius, but his new show and his jeb bush kid gloves “interview” with satan’s spawn jeb are a little disappointing. i was hoping for some new approach to late night t.v., but it’s been pretty formulaic. the suits-and-ties must of pulled rank, and colbert is willing to go along for the check and for any little jabs he can get in along the way. too bad…

i don’t have any idea who these musical guests are except for mavis and buddy. i think that might be derek trucks on guitar, but yawn.

I didn’t see Colbert last night.
However, I read this today from Eric Boehlert. This tells me that SColbert did a good job.

I am here to register a complete disagreement with 4more.
I thought the new Colbert Show was genius!

From the opening song to the closing number. Creative and smart.
To me it was the familiar Colbert satire minus the Bill O’Reilly veneer he had on his previous show.

Stephen was brilliant in exposing Jeb! Kid gloves??? No. Not unless you failed to see the rapier in the glove. We saw the total programmed inane Jeb. Dangerously dumb and harmful. This is the smarter Bush?? OMG.

Stephen delivered the Democratic message in the closing number which had me up on my feet and dancing.
Watch it and enjoy. You will recognize a lot more folks than Mavis, i promise you.

fair enough. just didn’t register that way for me. colbert has earned my trust over many years now, so i’m fine still giving him the benefit of the doubt. was just hoping for a little more from the first big show.

Thank goodness Jon Stewart didn’t get the late night show! I would never have watched any of it - couldn’t even watch his old show when President Obama was on, when - normally - I would have made an exception.

Here’s an article about the lineup for Stephen Colbert’s show, for the first couple weeks. It gets better:

I don’t know what TV show 4morefor44 was watching, but that report is pure hogwash. I suggest going by Vicki’s report.

Jeb even jutted out his jaw on the Veto Corleone moniker - kind of like I’m guessing he’s done at the Bush Thanksgiving dinners, when “the boys” start talking achievements. Stephen exposed another layer of his brotherly skin tonight.

so the idea is that colbert brought bush the third onto this historic show to give him enough rope to hang himself? didn’t come across that way to me. yes, i agree bush sounded as much as a moron as his older, worst-president-ever brother, but i still can’t get over the fact that someone polling around 10% is selected to be on such a big show.

Williams sisters add new chapter to ‘greatest story in tennis’.

Serena and Venus Williams added another chapter to what the world number one claims to be greatest story in tennis when she outslugged her sister 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 on Tuesday to reach the semi-finals of the US Open.

There are few that would disagree with Serena that the Williams sisters’ rise from the hard scrabble streets of Compton to the top of the tennis world is both fascinating and inspiring.

But it is a story still being written and what is unfolding at Flushing Meadows this fortnight could well provide a chapter all its own with plot centering around what was an enthralling 27th meeting between the siblings.

“I think it’s the greatest story in tennis because we really — you know, with our how we started and how we grew up and how we were able to win championships and be, you know, such inspirations for so many women across the globe, I mean, it doesn’t get better than that,” said Serena.

Certainly Serena seemed inspired on Tuesday as she and Venus played with the fire and passion that had been missing from many of their other 26 head-to-head meetings.

But never before had so much been riding on the result.

A win by 35-year-old Venus would move her a step closer to a first Grand Slam since 2008 Wimbledon but would scuttle Serena’s chances of joining their sport’s most exclusive club of calendar year Grand Slam winners which includes just three members Maureen Connolly, Margaret Court and Steffi Graf.

Certainly there are no secrets between the sisters who knew exactly what to expect having played each other since they were first handed racquets and started playing on the cracked public courts of their Los Angeles neighborhood.
