    Thanks NW for posting the President’s Day. I look forward to looking and listening when I get home, but, in the meantime - that’s a HAWT! picture of PBO taking off his…oh, it’s his jacket :D :D :D

    Evening folks! Wonderful round-up, NW :)

    ‘Most of us know IBM’s Watson as a threat to humanity’s dominance of Jeopardy and the AI successor to a machine that similarly dethroned chessmaster Garry Kasparov. But now Watson wants to show us his more warm and chatty side, and he’s starting (oddly enough) by sitting down with the likes of Bob Dylan and Ken Jennings, the supercomputer’s trivia-spouting archenemy. In its new campaign, anchored by 30-second spots for IBM’s new cognitive computer consulting unit, Watson is shown talking with a guitar-wielding Dylan. The computer brags it can read 800 million pages per second, identifying key themes in Dylan’s work, like “time passes” and “love fades.”

    In some ways, Watson has been for cognitive computing what Dylan was for folk: an icon of an emerging era. And like Dylan, Watson has also evolved (though Watson was always electric). The Dylan commercial is part of a new campaign created by Ogilvy & Mather to help explain how the 2,000-person division at IBM applies the supercomputer’s ability to ingest massive amounts of information such as medical data, media research or even song lyrics. In Dylan’s case, IBM data scientists applied five Watson services to 320 songs from the songwriter’s portfolio in order to understand trends within the music. The computer’s capabilities in distilling the information also include personality analysis, tone analyzer and key word extraction…continued’

    Congrats Gail :)

    NW - you delight us every day with all that our President (and First Lady) accomplish for us. Thank you!!!

    And, I just had to ….

    One thing for sure, Hill’s hypocrisy and smarmy behavior is something we all must do everything we possibly can to not persist past the primaries.

    Thus …. all hands on deck for #LetsRollJoe!!!!

    If I’m honest I’ll admit that I get confused by those countries that have both a president and a prime minister/chancellor - I mean, why do they need two leaders?

    Hi Gx2, I see you up there!

      One has little or no political power. The role of the President is the role that Monarchs were given when they lost their “right to rule” (well some lost their heads, but others were kept on to support tourism.) In the westminster system power rests with the head of Government who is the leader of the party with the most members in the lower house. This avoids the stalemate (and drama) that happens in the US when the President & the house majority belong to different parties. The President (or in the case of Oz, the Governor General) is the Head of State - does all the official ceremonies. In the US the head of State and Head of Government is one person.

      In our system John Boehner would have been PM & he would have just been rolled - as was Tony Abbott. The difference - Boehner chose to resign - Abbott couldn’t believe he was going to lose - which in my book puts Boehner a step ahead of Abbott.

      This man if confronted by anyone with a gun would probably piss all over himself. Arming teachers or hiring teachers who are permitted to carry a weapon is just what schools need. A teacher getting pissed off by a mouthy kid and emptying her weapon into him. When will the GOP get the hint that these people go to college to become teachers not marksmen. Who is going to pay them to own a gun, get licensed, gun practice, etc. when we don’t pay them enough to own their own homes in some states. Police have to go to the gun range own their own time if they want to shot better. They are not required to spend time on the job to become good marksmen. I heard B.C. interviewed on NPR and this man is just nuts. The interviewer asked him many times what programs would he cut for the government to be balanced and he could not answer the question. Then he went on a military spending spree to show Putin who’s boss. Oh and he would not raise the debt ceiling until the government had a balanced budget. The interviewer had to explain to him the debt ceiling is based on money that was already spent not a budget, he had no clue…just that he would not raise the debt ceiling under no circumstances until we got our spending under control. Frightening that people want novices in the WH until their SS and Medicare ends.

    I guess PBO has spoiled me and millions of others with his consistence and ability to stick to a hard but right decision (even when the majority of the country opposes him);

    just a few things to recall where polls said the majority of American voters were opposed but PBO went ahead and did it any way because he believed it was the right thing to do for the future of the nation :
    - economic stimulus,
    - Detroit-car-bailout,
    - Obamacare,
    - fuel efficiency standards,
    - reducing the number of military fighting in Iraq, Afghanistan, ……..,
    …….. just to mention part of a long list

    but “some politicians” are really shameless in their lack of core convictions => they could even deny their parentage if the polls demanded that this was what was required for this moment in time;

    • October 8, 2025 at 4:59 am

      This is the part of what folks don’t get…the President is Beloved…he is beloved because he has shown character…tenacity…courage…that he has shown love for God and country….that he has integrity….and i am sure we all can add to this list….

      We Love Our President…and we do not take kindly to those who seek to trash him…NUff SAID

    Funny little addition but that´s actually quite a big thing for Gauck, since even though the German president is factually the head of state and highest ranked politician, he has very little power in any political process which means that many people outside of Germany dont even know we have a president. The most influencial and powerful German politician is the chancellos which means we usually send our presidents to events commemorating stuff (or former presidents to giving awards to my school, whoot!), but the last president was actually a bit sad about never having met PBO when he was in Berlin, because unlike the chancellor and the mayor of Berlin he wasn´t “considered important” for this event. :D
