I was brought up in a town of about 500 - for many years no street lights - no paved streets - just had to walk out onto the back verandah - and definitely Oh my.
99ts, the finest place I have been on this planet to see the night sky: South Island of New Zealand. Far from any land mass, clean air, fewer human settlements (at least back in 1979 & 1993). Talk about dizzying!! It is almost hard to breathe for the staggering immensity of the Universe. One quickly becomes okay with the possibility we are not alone. How could we be so simple to think there is not intelligent (more than we are) life out there? Thinking of you both as you check off lists and days. When is the final big push? Let me know and I will get that candle a-burnin’!
Hello Dudette,
You are truly a renaissance woman! Your delight in Science and the Arts is infectious! You bring so much knowledge, joy, and enlightenment to TOD,
So Bill Nye is in the house, but what’s the deal with Neil deGrasse Tyson?!?!? I don’t see him present nor have I seen anything from his Twitter page on this event.
Yes - I was going to post something similar. I figured he must’ve had a falling out with POTUS for some reason. His tweet to Snowden, warmly welcoming him and calling him a “patriot” seemed VERY agenda-driven. To me that tweet reeked of insincerity and spite (towards PBO)…
of course, he could just be traveling or offline for a bit, but yes, his praise of the russian resident was very suspect. trying to give benefit of the doubt, but hmmmmm…..
“It’s so incredibly AWESOME to have a president who is genuinely excited and loves science. ”
And it’s been a long time coming - truly truly disgusting that the media would prefer to talk to Donald Trump about insulting a Bush than to laud the wonderful intelligence and achievements of their President.
This last weekend we went camping and the stars were brilliant. It was so wonderful having a glowing firelight and laying back on our lawn chairs watching the stars. This is why I love the fall in Montana. It stays to light in the evenings in the summer to enjoy the stars but the fall is magnificent. And very few campers. Sure will enjoy this night at the White House.
White House is wigging out on Instagram right now:
Next up is this incredible view of Saturn's rings, seen in ultraviolet by @NASA’s Cassini spacecraft. Hinting at the origin of the rings and their evolution, this ultraviolet view indicates that there's more ice toward the outer part of the rings than in the inner part. #AstronomyNight

Our PBO is a true Renaissance man; from his love of and interest in science and literature, to singing blues, jazz, and soul to his baby (MO), to talking trash on the basketball court, to staring down foreign leaders and kicking political ass, to being a baby and kid magnet, to being a loving husband and father who is very present, we have never seen his like in public office before and probably never will again. How lucky and blessed we are to be present and aware to share in these historic times.
EVERY word of this!! I also view him as a Renaissance man. I think about his vast abilities and his temperament, his capacity for love and compassion - it’s just beyond comprehension sometimes. He’s a thinker, a dreamer, a doer.
AND his incredible knowledge of history. As a history teacher myself, this is something that I absolutely love about PBO. He puts everything into the context of history. Incredible.
Just a gentle reminder to HRC and her loyalists: the first, and most important call made by Sen. Obama, the 2008 Democratic nominee for president, was to his other rival, Sen. Joe Biden. Candidate Obama asked Sen. Joe Boden to be his partner in running the country. It’s absolutely indisputable that Joe Biden earned the trust and respect of President Obama. Consequently, he has been the most engaged, and the most consequential U.S. Vice-President in history. President Obama has stated publically how much he values BP Biden’s wisdom and experience, both in Domestic and foreign affairs. For many of us who support VP Biden, we value his honesty, his compassion for ordinary people, and, most importantly, his genuine love for all humanity, which is deeply rooted in his love of family.
Excellent reminder nath! I hadn’t even thought about it - but this is a great point. PBO chose Biden to be his running mate - ran and won with Biden on his ticket, and he did so TWICE. And we the people love, admire and respect our VP, more so than any other in recent history.
maybe this has been talked about around here, i don’t know, but i haven’t seen it myself…with joe biden his time on this decision, it shortens the amount of time his supporters would have to spend campaigning for him. with these campaigns now getting ridiculously long, i’m thinking this is a good thing, where his troops can be fresher than the others and not suffer as much burn-out. this was an issue for obama supporters in 2008 i remember, where a lot of people had to pull back for a while to recharge before hitting the streets hard again in the last few months of the campaign. just a thought…pacing is everything!
But because so many candidates are running competitively with those voters—including Carson, Fiorina, Rubio, sometimes Bush, Kasich, Christie, and Trump himself—they face the common risk in the race’s early stages that they will splinter the white-collar vote so much that they can’t overcome Trump’s blue-collar support. If that pattern allowed Trump to win not only Iowa, which has frequently favored conservatives, but establishment-friendly early states such as New Hampshire and South Carolina, a more centrist opponent may find it difficult to reverse his momentum.

I had forgot about the National Post (good outlet) until you reminded me. The only time I would ever see it occasionally was when that dummy David Frum would publish & his wife runs HuffPo Cananda too.
Wish there wasn’t so much light polution where I live. I fondly remember the most beautiful night skies I ever experience — the Central Training Area (CTA) in Okinawa. I spent three weeks looking at a night sky blacker than a well seasoned cast iron; the stars looked like fine diamonds on that background. I close my eyes and remember with a smile…
If the Tories lose 18 seats, they lose their majority. They’ve lost 13 so far in just Atlantic Canada and Newfoundland-Labrador at current projections.
Just wandered back in to post LL - seems it is possible that ALL atlantic coast seats are going liberal - even the new dems are losing seats - not to mention a number of current conservative ministers!
http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canada-election-2015-voting-results-polls-1.3278537
Liberals poised for a near sweep of Atlantic Canada
And they tried to make Trudeau - too young, too inexperienced - wonder who else was treated like that!
still nothing from Neil deGrasse Tyson about #astronomynight. really hope he’s traveling and offline, otherwise this would be ridiculous for him to say nothing about this night at the white house.
That jab came on top of the ongoing furor over a secret letter that 13 conservative cardinals sent to Francis just after this synod began earlier this month in which they blasted the process and argued that it was rigged to favor reforms that would lead the Catholic Church down the road to heresy and ruin.
One of their chief complaints was the composition of the 10-member committee drafting the final report; that committee, which the conservatives said was too progressive, includes Wuerl, who was personally named by Francis.

One of the most useful lessons I learned from working at Facebook had nothing to do with technology: Doubt the media. Always doubt the media. Many journalists are superb, but certain reporters would publish plainly inaccurate information about our products on a regular basis. And if they got our tech wrong, what were they getting wrong in that science story? That war piece?
Today this healthy skepticism led me to start pulling on a thread…
Evening everyone…so much to catch up on, though I do love that my President loves science:)
a commet - what’s happening in Canada?
make that a comment - and gm from my world TOD.
Huh? Wot has VC done now????
Giving & Counting votes (or as I like to say - selling votes to any comers). Waiting to see if Harper is upended
Good evening Chips & TOD! :) Happy Monday to all. What a perfect night to watch the stars!
Only thing I didn’t like about London - no stars - eternal light haze
Enjoy your star gazing hf
In L.A. you have to go 100 miles out of the city to the desert to see stars. But when you do? Oh my.
Or you can go to the Griffith. :-D
http://griffithobservatory.org/
Oh, Griffith is GREAT. But, nothing like laying on your back and staring up at a sea of stars out in the desert.
Good point!
I was brought up in a town of about 500 - for many years no street lights - no paved streets - just had to walk out onto the back verandah - and definitely Oh my.
Color me green with envy 99ts!
I dunno where this was taken but wowie-WOW!
I don’t live there any more dudette - big city - although after about 2am lots of stars :)
Or just come to my apartment in Monrovia. The first time I saw stars over the mountains, I couldn’t believe my eyes!!!
Ok, we know where the next SoCal TOD gathering will be!
COOL! We just have to be quiet so we don’t invite the resident Bear too :-)
Bear???? SQUEE!!!

Hi MightyP - 4 weeks to go - every day is scary & frantic - as you would know. I sometimes wake up in panic mode - what are we doing!
I’ve never been to NZ - have some family in the south of the South Island. Mr 99 & his daughter have visited.
I’ve said this before. Mother Nature is an O’bot. Notice how she’s on her best behavior this evening for the star-watching event at the WH…
The skies have been really amazingly beautiful the last few nights. Thank goodness!
Perfect for a new thread! Thanks Chips!
Our President is SPEAKING NOW! : )
Yay! It has begun! :-D
Hello Dudette,
You are truly a renaissance woman! Your delight in Science and the Arts is infectious! You bring so much knowledge, joy, and enlightenment to TOD,
Aw, thank you sweet friend!

So Bill Nye is in the house, but what’s the deal with Neil deGrasse Tyson?!?!? I don’t see him present nor have I seen anything from his Twitter page on this event.
Yeh, I was thinking the same thing. Wassup Doc???
tyson must be waiting to see if his new “hero” from russia - eddie snowjob - thinks it’s cool or not before commenting. ;)
Oh wow! I missed that! Very disappointing!
I remember the thread when it came up Dudette, GGail commented how disappointed you’d be when you found out!

Eeek! No Neil Noooo!
of course, he could just be traveling or offline for a bit, but yes, his praise of the russian resident was very suspect. trying to give benefit of the doubt, but hmmmmm…..
Feels like a punch in the gut when one of your heroes turns out to be flawed - in a big way. I need some air. Ugh!
When that dude started sucking up to #TraitorSnowden he discredited himself, enormously ……
Ugh! My head hurts!
Maybe it has something to do with Neil tweeting Eddie Snowden that he thinks of him as a “patriot”
Ugh…. I’ll take Bill Nye, thank you very much.
Makes me think of the punchline to that Key and Peele sketch :-)
So many thanks NW

Thank you so much, Nerdy Wonka, for effectively communicating President Obama’s vision and plans for the future.
This!

Of the first five declared seats, the LIberals have won all five in Canada.
Yay!
double yea!
White House is wigging out on Instagram right now:
Wow…my my my…
Oh my goodness, that’s gorgeous!
Love how Saturn looks like a colored vinyl record!
Awesome!
And added to all of this, he has been successfully presidenting while Black for 7 years
Inorite? He’s a superhero.

This a thousand times!
profound movie!
Absolutely! It’s a damn shame that I’ve only seen it a mere 20 times! :-)
Here’s one of my favorite scenes!
my favorite comment from the movie…”It would be a profound waste of space”
Yep! :-D
Carl used to say that!
:D…it was in the movie as well
Yep (spoiler…
… she says it right near the end - just before they dedicated the movie to him. :-)
Loved Contact!
Dudette I love love this movie. it’s just awe-inspiring no matter how many times I’ve seen it.
VP Biden must be really on the brink of announcing or something - I mean, HRC is hugging PBO as tightly as ever!
That’s kind of a hoot.
LOL! Yep! :-)
Good one , Hope !

I like the way you think!
You think like a skilled strategist 4more!
Ok ok, sure, astronomy is cool and all, BUT: NEW STAR WARS TRAILER COMING OUT ON MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!
Cool-gasm!!!
Liberals have won nine seats, and are leading in 21 others. Conservatives have won no seats yet, leading in one riding.
Harper will lose big…
GE TOD! ….I would get a kick out of this

For Dr. Bob! :-D
Time for the MNF game but here is a nice link to follow the Canadian elections:
I don’t know if the Atlantic is a bellwether but PM Harper is in huge trouble if it is…so far 23 elected 8 leading from the Liberal party out of 32!
I’m on the National Post. Pretty good updates.
I had forgot about the National Post (good outlet) until you reminded me. The only time I would ever see it occasionally was when that dummy David Frum would publish & his wife runs HuffPo Cananda too.
How great is that!
Totally!
Look at pure admiration and awe in his eyes… :) This is night he won’t ever forget!
Oh no! The 12 year old Muslim terrorists meet the President of the United States.
Loving this President! He inspires!

21 Liberals elected, leading in 11 ridings. No Conservatives elected, none leading.
Most EXCELLENT!! Thanks for the update, LL :)
So far I’ve found the Globe & Mail’s election page to be the easiest to follow

On the CBC site NDP voters were whining that the Libs were taking their seats.
And yes, Libs are leading ALL Maritime ridings or have won them already.
They Just Freak Out…cause that is what they do…:O
Astronut Mae Jamison is being interviewed now at the Whitehouse

Canadian election night - based on some feed back, this is going to be brutal for some politicians => bloodbath in the works ?
The tale of the tape will be when Ontario and Quebec come in, which should be starting soon.
NASA Administrator and former astronaut Gen. Charlie Bolden, USMC(RET) is now being interviewed.
Yep, sooooo cool!
That’s terrific, thanks a million Prettyfoot!

still nothing from Neil deGrasse Tyson about #astronomynight. really hope he’s traveling and offline, otherwise this would be ridiculous for him to say nothing about this night at the white house.
Really.

Come on… anyone got it yet? Anyone… anyone? Bueller? :-D
Okay, I’ll post the answer when we get a new thread! :-D
Thank you, I am still blank and I’m hearing the music
