Only thing I didn’t like about London - no stars - eternal light haze

      Enjoy your star gazing hf

      • October 19, 2025 at 7:33 pm

In L.A. you have to go 100 miles out of the city to the desert to see stars. But when you do? Oh my.

99ts, the finest place I have been on this planet to see the night sky: South Island of New Zealand. Far from any land mass, clean air, fewer human settlements (at least back in 1979 & 1993). Talk about dizzying!! It is almost hard to breathe for the staggering immensity of the Universe. One quickly becomes okay with the possibility we are not alone. How could we be so simple to think there is not intelligent (more than we are) life out there? Thinking of you both as you check off lists and days. When is the final big push? Let me know and I will get that candle a-burnin’!

Hi MightyP - 4 weeks to go - every day is scary & frantic - as you would know. I sometimes wake up in panic mode - what are we doing!

I’ve never been to NZ - have some family in the south of the South Island. Mr 99 & his daughter have visited.

This last weekend we went camping and the stars were brilliant. It was so wonderful having a glowing firelight and laying back on our lawn chairs watching the stars. This is why I love the fall in Montana. It stays to light in the evenings in the summer to enjoy the stars but the fall is magnificent. And very few campers. Sure will enjoy this night at the White House.

White House is wigging out on Instagram right now:

Next up is this incredible view of Saturn's rings, seen in ultraviolet by @NASA’s Cassini spacecraft. Hinting at the origin of the rings and their evolution, this ultraviolet view indicates that there's more ice toward the outer part of the rings than in the inner part. #AstronomyNight

Our PBO is a true Renaissance man; from his love of and interest in science and literature, to singing blues, jazz, and soul to his baby (MO), to talking trash on the basketball court, to staring down foreign leaders and kicking political ass, to being a baby and kid magnet, to being a loving husband and father who is very present, we have never seen his like in public office before and probably never will again. How lucky and blessed we are to be present and aware to share in these historic times.

Just a gentle reminder to HRC and her loyalists: the first, and most important call made by Sen. Obama, the 2008 Democratic nominee for president, was to his other rival, Sen. Joe Biden. Candidate Obama asked Sen. Joe Boden to be his partner in running the country. It’s absolutely indisputable that Joe Biden earned the trust and respect of President Obama. Consequently, he has been the most engaged, and the most consequential U.S. Vice-President in history. President Obama has stated publically how much he values BP Biden’s wisdom and experience, both in Domestic and foreign affairs. For many of us who support VP Biden, we value his honesty, his compassion for ordinary people, and, most importantly, his genuine love for all humanity, which is deeply rooted in his love of family.

        October 20, 2025 at 8:53 am

Excellent reminder nath! I hadn’t even thought about it - but this is a great point. PBO chose Biden to be his running mate - ran and won with Biden on his ticket, and he did so TWICE. And we the people love, admire and respect our VP, more so than any other in recent history.

maybe this has been talked about around here, i don’t know, but i haven’t seen it myself…with joe biden his time on this decision, it shortens the amount of time his supporters would have to spend campaigning for him. with these campaigns now getting ridiculously long, i’m thinking this is a good thing, where his troops can be fresher than the others and not suffer as much burn-out. this was an issue for obama supporters in 2008 i remember, where a lot of people had to pull back for a while to recharge before hitting the streets hard again in the last few months of the campaign. just a thought…pacing is everything!

But because so many candidates are running competitively with those voters—including Carson, Fiorina, Rubio, sometimes Bush, Kasich, Christie, and Trump himself—they face the common risk in the race’s early stages that they will splinter the white-collar vote so much that they can’t overcome Trump’s blue-collar support. If that pattern allowed Trump to win not only Iowa, which has frequently favored conservatives, but establishment-friendly early states such as New Hampshire and South Carolina, a more centrist opponent may find it difficult to reverse his momentum.

    Loving this President! He inspires!

Wish there wasn’t so much light polution where I live. I fondly remember the most beautiful night skies I ever experience — the Central Training Area (CTA) in Okinawa. I spent three weeks looking at a night sky blacker than a well seasoned cast iron; the stars looked like fine diamonds on that background. I close my eyes and remember with a smile…

That jab came on top of the ongoing furor over a secret letter that 13 conservative cardinals sent to Francis just after this synod began earlier this month in which they blasted the process and argued that it was rigged to favor reforms that would lead the Catholic Church down the road to heresy and ruin.

One of their chief complaints was the composition of the 10-member committee drafting the final report; that committee, which the conservatives said was too progressive, includes Wuerl, who was personally named by Francis.

O/T for the thread, but save this for later:)

    Don’t Outsource Your Thinking
One of the most useful lessons I learned from working at Facebook had nothing to do with technology: Doubt the media. Always doubt the media. Many journalists are superb, but certain reporters would publish plainly inaccurate information about our products on a regular basis. And if they got our tech wrong, what were they getting wrong in that science story? That war piece?
Today this healthy skepticism led me to start pulling on a thread…

Evening everyone…so much to catch up on, though I do love that my President loves science:)
