Though he didn’t call out the Republicans in particular, it was admirable that he did this, reached out, and spoke against the hateful speech.

I have a feeling (and a hope) that if Scalia retires or dies, Thomas will leave too.

        December 12, 2025 at 1:11 pm

Unfortunately, the last time Scalia spoke opening about retiring was back in 1990s. With GW Bush’s 2 SCOTUS appointments, he has Never spoken of retiring. Only death or a noticeably 5/4 Liberal tilt might do it. As for Thomas, Scalia or not, he will never retire for his selfish goal is to deny another Black man as a member of the SCOTUS. Only Natural Causes will remove Thomas.

Theirs no law that you can only have one AA on the SCOTUS, it would be cool if we have two AA’s and an Asian man or woman. One day I’d like to see a majority of minorities on the SCOTUS.

The one thing I notice about President Obama is that he doesn’t need the spotlight. While SOS Kerry and other worlds leaders are hammering out the final details of the Climate Change Agreement, President Obama is out playing golf.

The Nobel Peace Prize 2016 should go to the bicycle - at least that is what two presenters on Italian state radio believe, and they have started a petition to push for it.

The popular Caterpillar programme on Italy’s Rai 2 network is gathering signatures to present to the Norwegian Nobel Committee in February.

The presenters describe the humble two-wheeler as an “instrument of peace”.

They say the bicycle does not cause wars - often fought over oil.

The bike “is the most democratic means of transport available to humanity”, say Caterpillar’s hosts Massimo Cirri and Sara Zambotti.

They add that each kilometre pedalled generates a benefit to society of €0.16 (30.12; $0.17), compared with the social costs of using a car.

So true and timely for us. We got up last Sunday morning to no water. There was a main line break on our side of town so it effected many thousands of people, businesses, etc. Good thing was it was Sunday morning and they had it temporarily fixed by around 9:00. Turns out the break was under a small lake a mile from us. It was truly/permanently repaired yesterday.

We realized that we take water more for granted than we do electricity. As df said, it equals life.

    Another “GOOD NEWS” story…

magine Whole Foods at dollar-store prices—a new company called Daily Table is shifting the power back to people of lower income, so they too have the option of eating right.

This has long been the frustration of healthy food – that for some reason eating properly is saved for a wealthier segment of society. This isn’t the way it needs to be. With over 30 per cent of the national food supply wasted in the U.S., there is plenty to go around at affordable prices. This was the realization of Doug Rauch, former president of Trader Joe’s, when he founded Daily Table. The first store opened in Dorchester, Boston on June 4, 2025 and as the very first line of Time’s article reads in large bold text, “Tons of items are under $1.” more> > > > >

What I’m going to miss the most about President Obama is his vision. What separates an average politician from a truly great politician is vision. If you look at all the great Presidents, they had one thing in common, they all had a vision. In every speech President Obama has ever given he has talked about what America is and what America can become, not just for a select few, but for everyone.

        I think the reason they are prioritizing the LBGT is because of the added threat to their lives in some countries;

my country of birth has accepted refugees but in case of a LBGT refugee, you are subject to imprisonment with a threat of death initiated by the state

Quite a contrast to the “exceptional” “Christians” with their loudly vaunted “Values.” As far as I can tell the GOP’s only acted upon value is Greed.

Only in USA that a National Party is in deep willful denial of Climate Change……..
Question for the Political Press and Journos of all stripes………..when was the last the GOP supported any measure to reducing Man made contribution to the detrimental conditions on Earth?
They denied Acid Rain. Mercury in Fish. Toxic Paint. Hazardous Landfills. Etc.
When was the last Time the Republican Party did anything to improve the lives of Americans?
    Congrats World.
    Congrats SoS Kerry
    Thank you, Pres Obama!

      December 12, 2025 at 2:14 pm

The last time the GOP supported any measure to protect the environment was during the HW Bush administration when Bush Sr. worked with Congress to pass an expansion of the Clean Air which included a cap and trade program to tackle acid rain and requirements for new scrubbing technology. You look at the GOP today and you would be surprised that the GOP in the past did support environmental protection and land conservation.

Knowing me, I will be typing this and a new thread will start, so you may see this posted on multiple threads today :-) But I just saw this and had to share:

    A Holiday classic is born!

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings perform “8 Days of Hanukkah”

The lyrics are not playing around :-) She is seriously bringing the soul to the Festival of Lights!

The band is even wearing Hanukkah holiday sweaters!

The album is called “It’s a Holiday Soul Party” I’m gonna get it for sure!

What the President is talking about is that leadership is not a go it alone and impose your will on others way of doing things. The idea he is expressing is a more powerful form of leadership because it is inclusive rather than exclusive. It is a rejection of the manor in which this country has so often functioned and it is in direct opposition to the positioning of the GOP and those on the right.
