For the first time in more than five years, a Georgia law enforcement officer will be prosecuted in the fatal shooting of a civilian.
After an eight-hour presentation by prosecutors, a grand jury on Thursday indicted DeKalb County police Officer Robert Olsen on charges including felony murder, District Attorney Robert James announced. Olsen shot and killed Anthony Hill, a mentally ill military veteran who was naked and unarmed at the time, outside a Chamblee apartment complex in March 2015.
The felony murder charges against Olsen stem from two separate felonies: Aggravated assault and violating his oath as a certified Georgia peace officer. He is accused of violating DeKalb police’s use of force policy and falsely claiming, to another officer, that Hill physically assaulted him prior to the shooting.
Why was someone with this degree of open sadism on the police force to begin with? You don’t just display this kind of savage brutality once; it must have been a pattern of behavior for some time but the system and fellow officers were afraid to call him out. Among all the other reforms to policing policies, there should be a way of identifying and firing murderous thugs before they act, not after.

This morning during the 6:30 am local news, I decided to count up the ads and references to the caucuses. Between 6:28 am and 6:59 am – there was a Rubio ad, Sanders ad, news story about Clinton in IC, Clinton ad, Trump ad, Carson ad, anti-Rubio ad from Jeb!, caucus location news coverage, same Sanders ad, Cruz ad #1, Cruz ad #2, same Clinton ad. That was the longest 30 minutes of my life – I’m going back to reading the paper after this! :-)

What is happening in Flint, Michigan right now is systemic genocide, and the victims are people of color and poor people. The city’s population is 60% Black and 42% of the residents live below the poverty line. They are being poisoned with lead-tainted water that is coming out of their faucets, and it is from the willful neglect of those charged with running the city and the governor of Michigan, Rick Snyder.
Long story short (TL:DR): Governor Snyder wanted to save money, so he decided to stop having Detroit water be the supplier for tap water in Flint. Instead, he felt that the very polluted Flint River would be good enough for the residents, in spite of the fact that the water is so full of lead, if you reach into it, you’d pull out a box of number 2 pencils. And probably a scantron attached for good measure. That was in 2014.
On Thursday, in the first skirmish over new carbon-emissions rules, a federal appeals court in Washington refused to temporarily block their implementation…
The decision didn’t address whether the new rules are legal. But the lack of a delay means the utilities, coal producers and two dozen states challenging Obama’s Clean Power Plan must start planning how to comply. The regulations are the first national standard for power plant carbon pollution: By 2030, they aim to cut U.S. CO2 emissions to more than 30 percent below 2005 levels. States and utilities must use less coal and more renewable energy, including solar and wind power.

Good morning TODville. It is warm here in Montana. Yesterday it got all the way up to 45. Wish we were getting some of the snow from back east. Yesterday the ranchers and farmers I talk to on Thursdays all say we need more snow/moisture.

I listen to Stephanie Miller in the mornings. This morning she had Thom Hartmann on to try and calm everyone down. It was a good conversation. I don’t listen to Hartmann anymore, but I do appreciate that we need to be civil and not personal. I hope this can happen. I do know I will vote for whoever is the democratic nominee.
