i don’t agree with that at all (in fact was clearly the other way around), but in his usual fashion, our president is taking the high road for the good of the whole. what a leader he is!

      January 25, 2016 at 3:32 pm

Amazing! Can you imagine any other politician saying this? We will (I suspect) never have another President like PBO. This man is an awakened soul. Now I’ll have to go back and listen to this whole interview.

Like Pretty Foot said yesterday, PBO is like Obi-Wan Kenobi. He may be leaving the White House, but he will become part of the “Force” of citizenry. This is what he was telling us with the SOTU. He will continue to lift up, advance and reshape this country and the world even when he leaves office. Our Jedi Master president is not going anywhere:-)

      • January 25, 2016 at 4:16 pm

That’s why I don’t want him on the Supreme Court. I keep seeing people saying how great that would be, and it would, but I want him “out in the world”, free to express his opinions and work for peace and progress.

If he could replace Roberts as Chief Justice, then I would like to see him on the SCOTUS. But you’re right that him just being a Justice wouldn’t be as effective as going around the world doing good.

        • 15 arapaho415
          January 25, 2016 at 9:02 pm

          GE maryl1.

IIRC, PBO said last year in an interview that he wasn’t interested in SCOTUS (too confining — he absolutely absorbs and then radiates energy from the most powerful people on earth — citizens [especially children]).

I’ve said before that I think he’ll be very active with MBK, Africa and young leaders in the Asia-Pacific region (he understands how crucial it is to foster cooperation between China’s neighbors).

BTW, did you see that @maddow will have a town hall in Flint on Wednesday?

          • January 25, 2016 at 10:03 pm

That’s my vision for him too. Thanks for mentioning the Maddow show. I had seen it mentioned, but didn’t catch the date. I don’t have cable so I’ll have to catch it on the computer. The latest news is that Flint citizens may have damaged appliances because of the corrosive water. The lines going into the houses are still leaching lead into the water, so even when the main lines are replaced, they might have to replace the lines into their homes and interior plumbing. No one knows if the state will help pay for it. Some have to replace all their appliances. One man said he’s replaced his water heater twice already. Oh and the corrupt Republican Attorney General has appointed a person who is a big contributor to Snyder and is not an elected official (so no accountability) to investigate…Snyder. Hello, Justice Department? Over here please!

            • 17 arapaho415
              January 25, 2016 at 10:55 pm

OMG. Could things *get* any worse for Flint residents?

Replacing plumbing and appliances is big bucks — enough to make even the highly (over)paid national MSM whine.

Hope their homeowners/commercial insurance covers both.

What do you know about the $80 million that PBO authorized for Flint on Friday? Is it going to (corrupt) local/state agencies or is it available to residents themselves (like the Gulf Oil Spill)?

Just read the transcript of the Glenn Rush interview with PBO. I highly recommend reading it, even if you listened to the interview. Sometimes I miss things listening that I can more deeply comprehend reading.

    Some highlights for me:

This was telling to me, considering Bernie is not a Democrat. It also seems to convey a limited scope to Bernie Sanders’ focus:

“Yeah, we’ve had [he and Hillary Clinton] a conversation broadly about the importance of a Democrat winning. And I’ve had conversations with Bernie about, you know, issues that he’s interested in or concerned about.”

This is an interesting analogy by PBO:

“…I think they’re both passionate about giving everybody a shot. I think they’re both passionate about kids having a great education. I think they want to make sure everybody has health care. I think that they both believe in a tax system that is fair and not tilted towards, you know, the folks at the very top. But, you know, they — I think Bernie came in with the luxury of being a complete longshot and just letting loose.….I think Hillary came in with the — both privilege and burden of being perceived as the frontrunner. And, as a consequence, you know, where they stood at the beginning probably helps to explain why the language sometimes is different.”

    And THIS:

“….When I ran against John McCain, John McCain and I had real differences, sharp differences, but John McCain didn’t deny climate science. John McCain didn’t call for banning Muslims from the United States.”

Of course, John McCain unleashed the Palin on us, so he is definitely partially responsible for the current clown car.

This is so crazy. If his point is that businesses are burdened by regulations, then how is removing the rule about handwashing desirable when it means adding a rule that if your employees aren’t required to wash their hands, you have to put a sign in your window notifying your customers of that fact?

This isn’t about regs– this is about lawsuits. If the business owner is mandated to ensure that employees prepare food with clean hands in a clean environment, and you get sick, you sue the business. If there’s a sign in the window saying ‘eat here at your own risk’ then there’s presumably no lawsuit.

What’s really stupid is he says market forces will determine if these businesses with signs can stay open. Doesn’t that mean that customers will obviously prefer to eat where they know the business is required by law to prepare food in a clean, safe environment? Gah!!

    • 36 0388jojothecat
      January 25, 2016 at 4:55 pm

Does that mean GOP doesn’t wash their hands after using the bathroom?

Eewww! Another reason not to eat at Papa John’s (besides the crappy-tasting and insulting-to-Italian-cuisine-making-my-ancestors-cry excuse for pizza):-)

    • 39 Sandy1110
      January 25, 2016 at 6:13 pm

Interesting that this GOPer is bascially advocating ‘economic Darwinism’ by telling businesses they can opt out, but they have to let people know. I’m surprised he made that stipulation instead of suggesting ‘Do whatever you want with NO interference or disclosure’. I’d be fine with that as long as they DID disclose. I’d then know exactly which establishments to avoid.

I’m guessing he’s thinking ahead to the slew of litigation that might ensue if people were sickened without being aware of the opt-out.

      • 40 MadameSoph
        January 25, 2016 at 6:23 pm

Good point Sandy. Isn’t requiring signage also government regulation? BTW, what these libertarepublicans always forget is that the government of the United States is the PEOPLE, being the representative government of, by and for the people. At least it supposed to be…. if we vote. It’s the macro version of neighbors getting together and asking the guy on the corner to pick up after his dog so they don’t have to step in it.

    • 41 99ts
      January 25, 2016 at 7:10 pm

And this may well happen – just like the water situation in Flint – the GOP have NO reality
      http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-01-26/food-poisoning-outbreak-in-sydney's-south/7114592

New South Wales Health said 40 people had gone to hospital since Saturday after consuming food believed to be from a shop in Sylvania
“They’ve visited the premises and closed it down, so there’s no further risk,” Dr Ferson said.

    • January 25, 2016 at 11:37 pm

What an idiotic idea! First, restaurant owners are not stupid. They know that their business would go in the toilet if they posted such signs. Second, there is zero evidence that requiring restaurant employees to wash their hands is burdensome. Third, and most importantly, it goes against the primary goal of creating the United States government: the promotion of “the general welfare” of “We The People.”

Two Xmases ago when I went to Chicago to spend Xmas there with my youngest daughter and her husband who was in the same law school program PBO used to teach in I was given a great gift. They researched and took me on an Obama tour of Chicago. They showed me where the Obamas lived and pointed out their famous neighbors’ homes that I heard of pertaining to the first campaign. They showed me where the ice cream cones, first kiss and we had lunch at the art museum just like on their first date. I was shown the Law School including the classroom PBO taught in. Grant Park where I saw Oprah and a huge crowd gather for the acceptance speech after the election results were announced. It was a wonderful gift.
My other daughter lived in DC when Obama won his first term. I visited her for two weeks in January of 2009 with the Inauguration right in the middle of that visit. My name was drawn for two tickets for the Inauguration from my Senator Wyden. My daughter took me and gave me a ticket for Xmas for us both to go to one of the Inaugural Balls. My kids are a gift to me that I cherish.

BTW, if it makes the East Coast TODers feel any better, we had to replace the old shower head with a drought-approved one and now I feel like I’m showering under this:

        GE GGail.

It truly feels like Spring outside today, and despite the paltry rainfall we’ve gotten this Winter, some portions of the hillsides are already turning green.

The brown portions of coastal southwestern California are San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties (locally referred to the Tri-Counties). It’s only rained a couple of times when I hear on the radio about deluges in LA, Orange and San Diego counties.😦

Radio also informs me that temps may be in the 80s later this week (though they say we might get some rain this weekend — keeping my fingers crossed for blessed rainfall!).

    • 59 99ts
      January 25, 2016 at 7:07 pm

We had to do that years ago – it is now impossible to buy anything else locally. I just loved long hot powerful showers – but we all, eventually, including ggail below, have to accept that water is a very precious resource that we must preserve. (Thus said, shame that industry use of water is rarely, if ever, put under the same rules)

      • 60 MadameSoph
        January 25, 2016 at 7:37 pm

99ts, how I am missing even a semi-powerful shower:-) Whenever I go to Rome (where the flooding of the Tiber river, not drought conditions, is the problem) I am always jealous watching the water just pour out freely from those street fountains:

      • 62 GGail
        January 25, 2016 at 8:14 pm

99ts, they will have to take that showerhead out of my wrinkled fingers:-)
I have my showers timed so I don’t abuse the water restrictions.
I need that water to wake me up in the mornings so I can get to work with both eyes open!

        • 63 99ts
          January 25, 2016 at 8:41 pm

Sooner or later it will be pried from those fingers. Alternatively when the dams are empty, or you get a governor who uses a toxic supply won’t matter what type of showerhead you have

        • 64 MadameSoph
          January 25, 2016 at 8:42 pm

That’s why I’ve taken to showering the night before, GGail:-) Luckily, the bathtub is really deep and the overflow drain doesn’t work, so I’m also taking more nice, warm, luxurious baths (know it uses more water, but I feel like the pitiful showerhead flow earns me an indulgence:-)

my gawd, i can’t believe people still try to claim the new york times has a liberal bias. the amount of puffery they do for republicans is mind-blowing, such as this recent KING BUSH the 3RD p.r. piece:
    http://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/25/us/politics/jeb-bush-on-the-stump-sounds-different-from-the-tv-version.html?smid=tw-share&_r=0

and of course at the bottom:
    “Jonathan Martin contributed reporting.”

the republican propaganda posing as “the news” now is truly sickening. not sure how to combat it anymore. it’s so far off the charts. they’re trying so hard to rehab BUSH3.

GM from my world. Today is celebrated in my country as Australia Day – somewhat equivalent to the US 4th of July

It is the anniversary of the day Captain Arthur Phillip arrived in Sydney Cove and claimed the Country for Great Britain – using it as a penal colony. For many of the original (native) Australians this is seen as “invasion day” or a national day of mourning. For much of my life this was simply a day off work – usually the last holiday before children returned to school and not much else. Over the past many years governments have tried to turn it into the great celebration and a nationalistic jingo.

I believe it should not be seen as our National Day. I hope in my lifetime a change is made.

    • 79 pkayden
      January 25, 2016 at 7:21 pm

I found a discussion about Australia Day from within the Aboriginal community on a blog which I love to read from time to time.

      • 80 99ts
        January 25, 2016 at 7:57 pm

Many more of European descent are starting to realise that words ( one of the recent string of PMs said “sorry” to the aboriginal people) and actions are still poles apart. Choosing a day that includes all Australians would be a place to start.

    • 81 MadameSoph
      January 25, 2016 at 7:23 pm

“Invasion day” What a difference perspective makes. This is why what we need most in the world now is listening and willingness to hear and see. I hope we will all live to see changes like you hope for made all over the world 99ts!

I had mentioned that a friend of mine attended the recent Paris Climate Conference as a North American tribal representative of indigenous peoples around the world. It was really interesting to hear about the talks from him and the importance of language and the reasons/arguments for usage of specific words in the agreement. The election of PBO as well as the increasing representation, political power and recognition of indigenous people around the world is giving me hope that slowly but surely we can change the old colonial attitudes about history and each other.

Filmmakers who targeted Planned Parenthood face charges.

A Texas grand jury has cleared Planned Parenthood of misconduct after the abortion provider was accused of selling foetal body parts for profit.

Instead, the panel charged the filmmakers behind the accusations with tampering with government records.

The Center for Medical Progress (CMP) secretly filmed videos that set off an effort to withdraw the Planned Parenthood’s federal funding.

CMP founder David Daleiden was also charged to buying human organs.

“We were called upon to investigate allegations of criminal conduct by Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast,” said Devon Anderson, the prosecutor who is now charge of the case.

“As I stated at the outset of this investigation, we must go where the evidence leads us.”
