      Congrats, SWBluega!

      Good Saturday Morning, TODVille.

If I were Caitlyn Jenner, I’ll keep busy with whatever I need to do to be Caitlyn Jenner.

      • March 12, 2025 at 9:48 am

Would Trump be good for someone running around pretending to be a woman, like you Bruce. He is just like his step daughter Kim…sickening.

I will no longer acknowledge this fucking liar as a women. HE is another conservative opportunist who will only vote if HIS situation fits the need. LGBT issues known of his concern he can always go back to pretending to be a straight man. Healthcare, not my issue because I have plenty of money, SS, not my problem people like him don’t need it. He said that he’s against PBO because he’s for the “constitution” all he knows are talking points. That woman who left the room by the way, the blond one, “Cait” is having a secret affair with, not so secret after the airing of this show. Most of DT supporters are creeped out about He/She Jenner.

      • March 12, 2025 at 10:11 am

She made me nuts yesterday, too.

      • March 12, 2025 at 12:35 pm

What a shame. Caitlin Jenner could have done so much good with her high profile. However she listens to FOX and has deluded herself that the right wing supports LGBT. She supports Cruz who has spoken in favor of death for LGBT! A good person to challenge all of this is author and activist JENNY BOYLAN. And just found this: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/projects/storywall/transgender-today.
(After a relative changed gender I learned just how complex trans-issues are and what a dangerous world it can be for trans-people.)

The many photos of PBO yesterday at the Tech convention in Austin, TX showed some of the most genuine relaxed smiles I have observed from his photos in a long time. I study facial expressions when I paint and am interested in the body language studies used in crimes. The almost closed eyed slits appearing in those huge smile photos tell me he is feeling glad he is not running for office now and relaxed in the present.

      • March 14, 2025 at 8:46 pm

That’s a wonderful observation. I am a writer and look at facial expressions all the time to help me place them in the context of a story. I have thought he looked very tired lately but indeed he looked relaxed and happy that day.

Listening to my morning NPR newscasts this morning I observed in the shortened hourly version of the news it was reported as the Donald would have liked it sounding like it was the protestors fault and that Trump did the reasonable thing of cancelling the rally after conferring with the police. Later in the morning in the more in depth article it was portrayed more like what happened. Neither report had the info Rachel had last night that the police did not discuss cancelling the rally with him.

and this is one of my problems with her. She seems to need to play both sides of the fence. There is just not a both sides here. Trump, his racism, his incitement of violence is the problem. People protesting this is the good and right thing to do.

        March 12, 2025 at 3:19 pm

PBO would have made a statement very similar. Asking for calm from everyone is a reasonable thing to say.

Hillary has criticized Trump and his rhetoric repeatedly. Asking for a general condemnation of violence is the right approach, I think on a day when the tinder could ignite at any minute. And the “rhetoric” she talks about doesn’t come from protestors, it comes from Trump. The last thing I want to see is protestors being drawn into the violence and getting nailed for it.

      • March 12, 2025 at 4:32 pm

i believe that many white folks have trouble calling out racism…straight out…fearful of backlash…i am hopeful that she will find the courage to just straight out call it as it is..without caveot..the press does the same thing

Trumpmania Doesn’t Make a Stop in Chicago: An Initial Report (With Video) About My Experience at Donald Trump’s Canceled Rally Earlier Today

I made it back from the Donald Trump Chicago no-show rally. I have attached a video of the moment after it was announced that Il Duce Trump would not be making an appearance.

I have a longer piece that I just finished. These are some quick and initial thoughts.

    1. I am safe…of course you were all concerned.

    2. Trump’s supporters are racist, nativist, bigoted thugs. Some of them are just profoundly ignorant and contrarian malcontents. Others are more dangerous.

    3. Don’t believe the Fox News lie. Almost all of the “fights” were started by Trump supporters. I was pretty close to several of them.

    4. There are lots of very angry and racially resentful white conservatives in this country. I know this to be true as an empirical fact. Seeing it first hand and listening to them behind me in line is another matter.

    5. The Chicago police exercised great restraint. They were professionals.

How many times have you heard “Why did ordinary people not stop Hitler before he rose to power?”

Then you wonder why people are protesting?

    • March 12, 2025 at 12:09 pm

I was looking at the woman with the upraised hand in the picture above and wonder whether, if you showed her that picture right beside one of an ordinary person giving the same salute in 1938 in Nazi Germany, she would get the connection and be appalled. I don’t think she would because Nazis have been (rightly) labeled as evil and she wouldn’t consider herself evil. Her brain would probably scramble for some difference between them. We don’t want to think of ourselves as bad people and often justify bad acts as ‘not really bad because I’m not a bad person.” In fact, I thought maybe it would even prompt her to start justifying what the Nazi’s did. I think we all do this to a certain extent. We’re all willing to cut ourselves more slack than we cut others. Maybe there are different places where we will draw the line and say “I did that bad thing and to be a good person I need to stop doing it”. But it seems to me that anyone this far into it will never have that realization. It’s one baby step at a time down the moral pyramid and like the frog in the boiling water, sometimes it’s hard to see what is happening.

I have seen firsthand a woman in my art group make racist comments and antigovernment rants yet when my daughter living in Munich comes up she cannot understand why anyone would want to live with those terrible Nazi lovers.
She lives with outdated perceptions of others (Germans), Fox and Limbaugh info 24/7 fueling her prejudices, and anger for her own condition blaming it on everyone else taking no responsibility for improving her own situation. To me she represents those at the Trump rallies. In our small rural group about half hold her views which makes it hard for me to want to stay in the group. It does not help to try to educate them as they are firm in their ways. We have made a rule of not talking politics at our meetings due to the volatility.

While not yet (openly) supporting either Sanders or Clinton (it’s pretty clear, but mostly unspoken), President Obama is now obviously on the campaign trail. He said 2012 was his last campaign, but really I think this is. He is working for the Democratic Party, but for a Democratic Party that is better than it has been - more proactive, more engaged, more idealistically pragmatic. If Sanders really wanted to change things, that’s what he would be doing too, rather than tearing it down. He’s campaigning for all those down ticket Democrats Sanders dismisses as unimportant, getting the troups revved up. It will be a sight to behold when he and FLOTUS, VPOTUS, SLOTUS all get behind the nominee.

This is something the Republicans don’t yet grasp. After the July convention, we are going to see PBO unleashed along with VP Biden. I think that will be very liberating for Hillary and very empowering for all of us.

          March 12, 2025 at 7:29 pm

Actually, maryl1, I think President Obama will not only campaign this year, but I think he will campaign every two years, from now on, helping to get out the vote for Democratic presidential candidates and down ticket races. And after his comments at SXSW about how America is the only democratic country where it is actually difficult for our citizens to vote, I believe he will work in any way he can to try to make it easier for all Americans to vote in all elections. As you stated, for citizens to be more proactive, more engaged, more idealistically pragmatic. He so wants that for all of us.

The President’s doing “one-eyed dog in a smokehouse” jokes, now? Ha. Good for him! He has earned the right to joke about anything and everything, from my perspective, because most politicians, other than President Obama and about a couple dozen more Democrats, are all jokers.

I know this is a rhetorical question, but does the senior Bush not have any moral courage to speak up about the situation with Trump? Mitt did, and got royally shot down, but Mitt never had the respect of insiders. Supposedly GHWB had the respect of the party, and could have an effect if he spoke up. We know Shrub ( as Milly Ivins so lovingly called him) does not have moral courage, but he has nothing to lose, and should speak up too. These Republicans are all cut from the same cloth, shoddy piece goods, no moral center or standards. My father would not believe what his precious Republican party has fallen to, and would have a hard time accepting and believing it. Just like so many other old white men of the “greatest generation.” They still think they’re voting for Ike.

    • 118 jackiegrumbacher
      March 12, 2025 at 3:12 pm

Carolyn, moral courage has never been a strong suit of the Bush family. GHWB’s son, Neil, has come out in support of Bush, so that puts the senior Bush in a rough spot. I don’t think we’re going to see any courageous stands from any of them. I’m sure they’re calculated the odds and figure it’s better for them and any future Bush politicos (God help us) if they keep to the shadows and stay mum.
