    http://www.npr.org/2016/12/12/505261053/13-times-russian-hacking-came-up-in-the-presidential-campaign

On July 27, Donald Trump created one of the most surreal moments of the presidential campaign, when he encouraged Russians to hack his opponent’s email.

“Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’ll be able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing,” Trump said, speaking about Hillary Clinton’s deleted emails from her private email account from her time as secretary of state. “I think you’ll probably be rewarded mightily by our press.”

So it was a bit of a surprise when on Monday morning, he implied in a tweet that hacking hadn’t been a major topic during the election:

We’re not ‘delegitimizing’ Trump. He was never legitimate to begin with.
    Spandan Chakrabarti December 16, 2016

At the start of this week, Joseph Murray II, a conservative columnist for The Hill, wrote that Democrats – particularly President Obama – were merely using “claims” of Russian hacking to delegitimize Donald Trump’s upcoming occupancy of the Oval Office.

By using the term “delegitimize”, Murray quite consciously is legitimizing Trump. He and his right wing friends are implying that Trump is a legitimate winner in a legitimately conducted election, and therefore the rightful and legitimate claimant to the presidency once Barack Obama’s term ends.

There is no need to ‘delegitimize’ Trump, of course, because Murray’s implication is fiction. Donald Trump does not need to be ‘delegitimized’, because he and his election was never legitimate to begin with.

To hunt for proof, one need not sift through any greater a body of evidence than the fact that Trump has himself questioned the legitimacy of this election – both before and after its conclusion. Before the election, Trump himself boasted that the election would be rigged. After the election, Trump demanded that millions of votes be discounted in order to falsely claim himself the winner of the popular vote, because he claimed millions of votes were cast illegally.

Our founders held that the power of our government is derived from the just consent of the governed. When a public office-holder raises doubts about even a single vote’s legitimacy without the full willingness to prove such claims in a court of law, that office-holder cannot be considered to have the legitimate consent of the governed, and is therefore himself illegitimate.

Repeal of Obamacare Helps Ryan’s Plan to Privatize Medicare
    by Nancy LeTourneau
    December 16, 2016 10:36 AM

Back in 2014, Zachary Goldfarb made the case for why President Obama should be given credit for reducing income inequality.

The key policies Obama introduced include: higher tax rates on the wealthy, new levies on upper-income Americans in the Affordable Care Act and expanded refundable tax credits for the poor. They also include a more generous program of health insurance for low- and moderate-income Americans, achieved through subsidies and expanded Medicaid.

In addition to getting rid of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy, Obamacare had a redistributive effect: it levied additional taxes on upper-income Americans and provided health insurance to those with lower incomes via Medicaid expansion and subsidies to purchase insurance on the exchanges.

The Republican plan to repeal Obamacare eliminates that redistribution. As I noted yesterday, Howard Gleckman crunched the numbers on how that would affect people at various income levels.

    ………………..

If that is the thinking, here’s what the process would look like:

    1. Give the one-percenters a big tax break by eliminating the funding mechanism for Obamacare – thus causing the whole system to collapse.
    2. In the process, Medicare’s trust fund is robbed of the savings included in Obamacare, expediting it’s insolvency.
    3. Promise to fix all of that by privatizing Medicare and block-granting Medicaid to the states.

Of course the whole thing would be based on lies about how it would affect low-income Americans and the elderly. But that is something Speaker Ryan has been doing for a long time now.

    • December 16, 2016 at 4:38 pm

They can’t undo it without the entire Health Care industry collapsing and taking the economy with it.

If they repeal with no replacement, and the insurance carriers lose 20million customers, the amount they’ll have to raise everyone else’s premiums would be so astronomical, that the only people who could afford insurance would be people like Donald Trump.

That would cause everyone to overrun ER and Trauma centers to the breaking point.

The GOP hasn’t gotten smarter. They’ve gotten greedier and more corrupt, and become completely morally bankrupt.

I fully appreciate that many, hell, all of us are distraught and are looking for safe places to vent and release the fear/anger building up in ourselves as we bear witness to the impending dystopian future. I get it. But let us please, please, please not lower ourselves to the finger pointing and blame game; making accusations out of frustration based on what you are being fed from the media and starting the tearing down of Dems; essentially turning on our ourselves. It is counter-productive and I personally find it offensive. President Obama and AG Loretta Lynch and Nancy Pelosi are not super-heroes with super powers waving a wand to save us from ourselves. They’ve done some super-heros like things but they are not super-heros. They are people, just like us that are fighting the good fight. The country is at a god damn scary as all get out crossroads. I get it. But we didn’t get to that crossroads overnight or during our illustrious Prez’ last 8 years. It’s been DECADES in the making. It’s on ALL OF US to to fix this which is also god damn scary as all get out. I get it. But I refuse to give in so much to my despair and dinosaur brain human nature that I’m going to start turning on the very Dems who have been doing the yeoman’s job of heavy lifting FOR us while WAITING FOR US all to collectively step up and STAY IN IT with them.

I see that What Is Working has come back on the blog recently and as she has always done in her posts offered up constructive steps of action going forward. Let’s check that out.

Pf, earlier as I watched Pres. Obama explaining his position on the 2016 elections to the WH “”Press”” Corps it dawned on me that he isn’t going to ‘fix everything’ for us. He has laid out the facts as he knew them (as much as he responsibly could), and left it to us to vote wisely. Following the result of the vote, now he again shares pertinent info and leaves it to the relevant governing parties (including citizens and voters) to act. He isn’t going to single-handedly step in by Inauguration to clean up the mess that’s been created. Put another way, I had an ‘a-ha moment’ as I listened to him and remembered that one of the reasons I first fell in love with politician BHO was because he didn’t speak to me as to a small or gullible child, but as to an adult with a working brain. Over the years we’ve often called him the ‘only adult in the room’, but I’m now realizing maybe he doesn’t want to be, or see himself as, ‘the only’. Maybe *he* has been looking for most of us legal adults to *be* adults, and at the same time ‘be the change we want to see’.

I know I haven’t adequately explained the feeling that came over me as I watched him, /shrug/. Basically, Pf, I agree with you.

Yep, I got the same interpretation.

In fact, yesterday, I had a back and forth with some people on Twitter. I posted that exchange here.

as they speculated what others thought PBO would do, my first comment to them was a prediction that PBO would do all he knew the constitution allowed and then he would leave We, The People, to sort it out.

having watched & listened to him these years, you could see where his mind and actions would lead.

These days I’ve been more out than in in the village as Life 101 (Donna Dem’s favourite term) has been intruding majorly on my end. How are you, GCLinda?

Yes, listening carefully to PBO’s answers today and observing his body language reinforced for me that he continues to be consistent in his *LEADER*ship. Me, I’m not (no longer) looking for him to wave a magic wand. I believe he’ll do what he *can* do under the circumstances and he expects us/others to do what we can as citizens. I ❤ ❤ ❤ him!

OMG! They didn’t have a warrant?!?!?! I cannot believe Loretta Lynch is letting this go and is not on Comey’s ass and then some. I still say Comey and the NY office of FBI = smoking gun. Knowing what. RUssia had already accomplished, they all knew his actions would be the “icing on the cake.” I just called the DOJ, again, a few minutes ago. Left a not so nice/positive message.

        December 16, 2016 at 4:23 pm

They said they had a warrant. There’s a progressive lawyer working to get it released, because his question is, “how did you get a warrant? What “crime” did you have probable cause to believe was in evidence in those emails?” Something very wrong, very fishy, very treasonous going on here.

If they didn’t serve the warrant, then WTF?

    • 32 57andfemale
      December 16, 2016 at 4:35 pm

The article is even more infuriating. The judge appears to be willing to release the warrant (so apparently it exists) except he wanted to consult with the parties “served”. Apparently the parties were not served with the warrant.

Comey is an effing disgrace. Every media outlet should know it and say it loudly. I cannot believe what I’m witnessing in this country.

Duck and Cover Won’t Save Us
    by Martin Longman
    December 16, 2016 2:35 PM

The American electorate made a pretty bad mistake on November 8th, as becomes more and more obvious everyday. In fairness, most of the people who showed up to vote expressed a preference for the person who didn’t win, but that doesn’t change the outcome. And I have to agree with Jonathan Chait that the most troubling aspect here is that a lot of people are going to die, and that a likely source for the bloodshed is forming around Michael Flynn and his national security staff.

Simply put, the outlook doesn’t seem good:

It is almost impossible to overstate the danger to American national security posed by the combination of Flynn and his staff. Because his appointment is not subject to Senate confirmation, and also because it has been overshadowed by the Rex Tillerson nomination and its connection to the fast-moving Russia story, Flynn has receded from the front pages. His appointment is unprecedented, like so many other other things Trump has done — indeed, the endless violations of precedent are what make Trump’s election so surreal, and its dangers difficult to order.

But it is the specific, mutually reinforcing characteristics of Flynn and his staff that invite the most alarm. He is a conspiracy theorist averse to any challenge to his suspicions, surrounding himself with a staff of fellow conspiracy theorists seemingly designed to shut out any challenge to his biases, providing advice to a novice president who is himself a conspiracy theorist. It’s under-informed, overconfident crackpots all the way down. As a comedic script, it would defy plausibility. Except there’s a terrifying chance that a lot of innocent people will die as a result

    ……………………………..

Unfortunately, the record since then is clear, and the guy is a full-on nutter who is staffing up with fellow tinfoil hat travelers. When I saw her name mentioned on Twitter, I thought maybe Trump had offered the job of Press Secretary to Monica Crowley, which was a bad enough thought for me to have. When I realized that she’d been hired to serve as senior director of strategic communications of the National Security Council, I immediately loaded up a relevant video starring Bert the Turtle..

            Hi J’OB,
I also didn’t see all of it, but what I saw reinforced my admiration of President Obama. Look, I am very angry that we are going to end up with this vile and despicable man as the next president. While I, as a private citizen, have no qualms calling Trump a “vile and disgusting excuse of a human being,” I certainly don’t require, or insist, that President Obama should my words to attack Tump. Both the President and the First Lady campaigned very hard, and very passionately, against Donald Trump. So there is absolutely no basis to question/challenge their integrity on where they stand when it comes to Trump! On the other hand, POTUS and FLOTUS are obligated to honor both the Constitution and the tradition.

Yes, nath. I’m so thankful both POTUS and FLOTUS – whom we barely deserved – honored the Constitution, tradition, their families, our families, every day of their two terms and beyond. They never once disgraced their principles, any of us, or our country, as they completed this phase of their public service. We’ll never forget them (as well as our dear friends, the Bidens), and I’m sure you’re joining the rest of us who will be watching what’s next from all of them.

Also – we need to gear up to call our elected officials and be willing to phone bank into neighboring areas. This will be our first major fight w T and the Rs, it needs to be united, large, and loud.

I would ask everyone here to take on a role, this battle won’t be won at a blog, it will be won by having elected officials feel the pressure of their constituents who think ACA is a valuable part of our society.

Twitter is infuriating me: PBO is not doing enough. From the same whiners who did NOTHING to help him. I’m furious.

    • December 17, 2016 at 7:44 am

It angers me too, 57. PBO has stuck his neck out over and over and Democrats have left him hanging out there on his own…doing little or nothing to cover his back. Throughout the campaign, he gave guidance/warning of what would happen if we wasted our votes — not vote or protest vote. I guess like the people in the UK, the expectation was that Trump would not win. And now the hope is that this group or that group will bail us out from our recklessness/stupidity. It becomes annoying when those that NEED the help refuse to follow the guidance given, yet ALWAYS turn to that same source of guidance with expectations for relief. It’s like bullies and criminals who act all “big and bad” — who are so tough — until they have to deal with the [often negative] consequences of their actions. It’s like the individuals who, throughout their lives, have been protected from their reckless actions, who have now gone beyond a point that their protectors can not “save” them.

PBO will always be accused of not doing enough when every time he does something, it’s often countered by some action (or lack of action) that nullifies his work or makes the situation worse. As he basically said during the press conference, the acts taken by Russia/hackers in itself should not have affected the election and its outcome. To the degree that we as Americans move away from our values and are influenced by domestic propaganda, we *allow* foreign attacks to have an impact on our democracy.

  22. December 16, 2016 at 5:01 pm

The Electoral MAP is completely unconstitutional per the 14th Amendment, and must GO. Seriously. Are there any constitutional attorneys who lurk here?

It wasn’t until this election that I realized just how poisonous it is.

The 14th Amendment guarantees Equal Protection under the law.

All the GOP have to do is control 33 low-pop states. The EC is so broken, that if only a single person bothered to vote in each of those 33 states, those 33 votes would override the entire population of Earth if it lived in the other 17 states.

The EC Map gives 33 states’s votes more weight (when a single vote weighs more than an infinite number) than the votes in the other 17.

Think about that for a minute. 33 votes in specific geographical areas pick our President, no matter what the rest of the population wants.

In order to break that at this point, a large number of dems would have to literally move to the red states in order to take back control at this point from the GOP gerrymandered failsafe that exists. But due to the low amount of jobs available – most people are leaving those areas and moving to where their votes for POTUS, literally do not count. And even when Dems win, the GOP are so corrupt, they make laws that bar the Dem who was elected from doing their elected duty – SEE NORTH CAROLINA right now.

This is our Rubicon. If we do nothing about this injustice NOW, this country is finished. And people say their vote doesn’t count. Seems it’s very true when it comes to electing the POTUS. Only Red votes matter.

How is there not a class-action lawsuit for election vote equality happening right fucking now?

    • 56 nathkatun7
      December 17, 2016 at 12:13 am

      Hello Tally,
I am not a Constitutional attorney, but I am a studedent of history. You are absolutely spot-on for referencing Section 1 of the14th Amendment’s “Equal Protection clause.” Even more pertinent is the forgotten Section 2 of the 14th Amendiment, which clearly addresses the issue of deliberate voter suppression with the intent of denying citizens (in this case specifically adult male citizens) the right to vote for “the choice of electors for President and Vice President of the United States, Reprenstatives in Congress, the executive and judicial officers of a state or members of the legislature….”

Surely, a skilled Constitutional lawyer can combine both Sections 1 and 2 of the 14th Amendment, with Amendments 19th and 26th to challenge voter suppression laws in Republican controlled States that deliberately and intentionally enacted laws to deny citizens the right to vote. Section 2 of the 14th Amendments provides that the penalty fo the States that deny citizens the right to vote is the reduction for “the basis of representation” according the proportion of the number of people denied the vote. Again, I am not a lawyer, but I think all these Republican controlled States, which are busy devising schemes to deny citizens the right to vote need to be threatened with lawsuits aimed at reducing their Congressional Representation, which in turn will reduce the number of electors for President. if there is evidence that Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Wisconsin, etc., etc., used schemes that deliberately denied U.S. Citizens the right to vote, then those States, under Section 2 of the 14th Amendment, need to be punished by the reduction of their Congressional representation and consequently the number of their presidential electors!

    • December 16, 2016 at 5:58 pm

      This.

I admit I was a little disappointed Obama didn’t go harder on the existence of the EC, but I get it. For the last few weeks, especially NOW, recently, it feels like it felt right before we got Bin Laden.

The DOJ is going after FIFA – and Putin could go down that way. He’s responsible for bribing FIFA to get the World Cup for Russia.

The Putin/Trump/GOP/Koch rabbit hole is DEEP. The Dems and decent people in Gov of all parties, have played nice, and hoped that everyone’s Better Angels will have the last word, but it’s not happening, and it’s allowed the corruption to grow.

However, it feels like there’s a LOT going on behind the scenes right now….. in an epic/good way. Or that’s my psyche in survival mode.

President Obama has so much on his shoulders. He will be working for us until noon, January 20, 2017. That’s who he is.

I know that he is working on this horrible election morass, and is guiding much behind the scenes. Remember the old saying, “the mills of the gods grind slowly, but they guide exceeding fine.” This is how PBO works. My gut tells me that DJT will never be inaugurated. The same gut feeling that let me know that PBO would be elected and re-elected, and the same feeling I had election day that HRC would not win. This feeling has been building in me since late November. I don’t know if DJT will be arrested on suspicion of treason, or what, but I do not expect to see him take the oath of office. I think Comey also should be arrested.

We know that PBO is working within the Constitution……he understands it and honors better than anyone else I know of.

    PBO does nothing precipitously.

Remember he predicted he would win. I do hope you are correct. If you are and he’s not inaugurated, then is it Pence? Does the cabinet he has put together remain the same? We’ve never been in this place before so who knows what the process would be?

    • December 16, 2016 at 6:02 pm

If the electors don’t save us, the GOP will take down Trump on charges (pick something, the list seems infinite), before Jan 20th, and Pence who is more conservative the point of insanity, but at least Putin won’t be acting President…. will be installed. This has been their plan all along.

I’m not sure which will be worse. At least Trump boils the water first before throwing us in. Pence will make it a lovely bubblebath and kill us slowly.

Carolyn, wish I could be this hopeful. We’ll see what happens Monday but if he gets the votes in the electoral college can’t imagine he won’t be inaugurated. He cannot be charged or convicted of treason or any other such thing, he remains a private citizen at this point. He has taken no oath yet that he could violate.

I watched PBO’s press conference today, but came away with a different take. I thought he was saying, “I warned you, did every thing I could to prevent this, but it didn’t work out. My job is done.”

      This is now on us.

well I missed everything today with POTUS, hopefully there is video.

A terrible thing happened a block from us this morning. An elderly (83) neighbor was beaten to death in his home sometime over night/early this morning. My elderly sister neighbors are so upset as they have known this gentleman for many many years. It’s just horrible what people are doing to one another. I didn’t know him, but everyone that’s been here many years called him the “mayor” and said he was just a good, kind man.. Just too heartbreaking..

I’m so very, very sorry to hear this awful news, affecting your entire neighborhood. Hugs to you, as you suffer through this yourself.

Times like that I favor the death penalty. So sad for him.

I can’t agree w/ that so edp.. but I want very much to see this person apprehended soon. I spoke to detectives today as two different people told me two dif suspects but didn’t want to speak to cops. So we’ll see. Folks of every age & race seem to be devastated today over the loss of this poor man. I hope this really motivates everyone to pass on any info..

      very sorry to hear this!

what in the world makes people do such things to each other – and an elderly person at that.

      worse still, it may end up that this violence was committed by someone who wanted money (for drugs) or household stuff;

if they wanted stuff, the could have taken that without committing a heinous act to someone.

you and your neighbors must be traumatized and also fearful of your own safety.

keeping you in my thoughts and prayers and may the neighbors be safe.

This!!!! They created this monster and now they are expecting PBO to come in and clean it up. I was so happy when he let them know that they were reporting on Podesta’s risotto recipe instead of concentrating on the hacking, and how it was damaging our democracy. Now they want him to come out and “inspire” them by telling them all of the confidential details of what he is doing.

This Sunday I am going to a workshop that is put on by the local Har Shalom and the Friends Church on how to speak to those who disagree with you. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Do not forget there is an interview of First Lady Michelle Obama with Oprah on Monday. It is at 8 pm on CBS. I had to program my TiVo to record it while I am gone. I saw a clip of a portion of it where Oprah asked if her husband gave hope to the people and Michelle said he did giving examples then likened this time currently where we see what it is like to have no hope. I thought “Right!” That is what I am feeling with the election of Trump. No hope.

Anyone know how to block far right Internet journalist posts on FB? I do not mind the progressive posts, but hate the fake news posts. They just started popping up on my FB this last week.

My son and I went to see Rogue One last night, it was a fantastic movie. We went to see it at one of those joints that serves you dinner with a movie. I love those types of joints, I usually get the lollipop chicken drumsticks and the bottomless fruit as the main course, and for the appetizer I usually get the ceviche shrimp. Anyway the movie had a ton of action and it was well put together, I look forward to the next Star Wars installment.
