NO TAXES PLEDGE SIGNERS ARE NOT FIT TO GOVERN – THEY ARE SHEEP

Signing Away The Right To Govern

    =================================

It used to be that a sworn oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution was the only promise required to become president. But that no longer seems to be enough for a growing number of Republican interest groups, who are demanding that presidential candidates sign pledges shackling them to the corners of conservative ideology. Many candidates are going along, and each pledge they sign undermines the basic principle of democratic government built on compromise and negotiation.
    .
    .
More was needed to keep them in line, which gave birth to the signed pledge — no more enforceable than a spoken promise, but a politician’s actual signature was seen as more binding. The oldest and most pernicious of these modern oaths was dreamed up by Grover Norquist, the leader of Americans for Tax Reform, who has managed to get 95 percent of all Republicans in Congress to pledge never to raise taxes for any reason. If they end tax deductions, Mr. Norquist’s pledge-takers say they will match the increase in revenue with further tax cuts.

That pledge is the single biggest reason the federal government is now on the edge of default. Its signers will not allow revenues in a deal to raise the debt ceiling.

SOME GOP RESISTANCE TO GROVER NORQUIST

      Zealots’ Remorse

      =================

A welcome touch of resistance is in the air toward Grover Norquist, the conservative lobbyist and Capitol Hill fixture who has been brilliant at wrenching a simplistic pledge from all but six House Republicans to never, ever increase taxes.

“It’s time to put pledges in a bonfire,” Representative Steven LaTourette of Ohio, a past pledger, declared the other day, after helping to enlist 39 fellow Republicans to join 60 Democrats in a letter to the budget deficit supercommittee urging a grand bargain that dares to include new revenues as well as spending cuts.

This is anathema to Mr. Norquist, who as head of Americans for Tax Reform has spent the last 25 years building a public roll of pledges from antitax politicians. He is wielding it like a cudgel against any move in the supercommittee to raise taxes.
      .
      .

With his ability to bless or terrorize conservatives, Mr. Norquist enjoys access to and influence over the Republican leadership. So it’s good to see some former pledge takers realize that the only allegiance they owe is to their constituents, not to Grover Norquist.

        • 28 Tien Le
          November 21, 2025 at 9:39 pm

And you can tell from that interview clip ad that he feels sheepish about his ability to wield power. Smarmy as all get-out. Kinda hard to tell Republicans that he’s going to get them ‘other employment’ if the Republican voters are actually okay with tax raises. If Norquist goes around bashing politicians for raising taxes, it just might fall on deaf ears. This is the power of the message that the Obama Admin has crafted so brilliantly that people are buying that message, not the ‘no tax’ message, which just might be on its last legs.

For one thing, the voters might just decide these no tax people need to find other employment anyway, so they’re damned if they do and damned if they don’t. Sucks to be a Republican.

Brawawa..”Zealots Remorse”.. too weird those people who are living off the government pledging to a bathtub guy.

I heard PObama mention the repubs who did want to come to a balanced agreement in that Presser where he just walked off after saying “Thanks”.

Way good to see gop thinking about their constituents instead of gn. I remembering something about one of those pubs had some people in their District who were upset that he had pledged to grover.

It’s also how they got elected. Lots of ppl from all walks of life who believe in the promise and pride of what it means to be American and who recognize that he is the one who will help us regain our footing in these regards after the dreaded Bush years (the lost decade of American exceptionalism)

This is arguably the only country that isn’t founded on a common faith, language, ethnic background or status in life. We are Americans because we believe in the pledge, constitution & bill of rights. The republicans have been screwing with all three! They are bound for certain doom

            November 21, 2025 at 9:47 pm

You’re reminding me of something Jonarhan Alter said a few weeks ago about the possibility that Barack Obama would have to “swallow his pride” and ask Hillary to be on the ticket for 2012.

I too, of course, could be very wrong but I’ve felt very uneasy for months about the Clinton allies; I’ve felt that they are attempting to weaken President Obama and force him to give them more power within the administration.

That quote makes me regret having bought Jonathan Alter’s books. It’s just so disrespectful and ungrateful to Vice President Biden for people to continue this nonsense of replacing him with Hillary Clinton. Joe Biden has been entirely loyal, hardworking, committed and fierce in his role. Plus, he successfully implemented major programs that were assigned to him - without scandal. He deserves respect.

Chris Matthews voted for Bush twice and pushed memes that mirror right-wing slander (e.g. Righ Wingers: the President is arrogant, Chris Matthews: The President is ungrateful; RW: The First Lady is an angry and un-proud American, CM: The First Lady is unhappy and ungrateful in the White House)

Chris Matthews has permanently squandered any shred of goodwill he ever had. Having served under President Jimmy Carter, Matthews knows very well how false and derogatory memes can frame public perception and damage a President’s ability to get important work done.

Fortunately Matthews only reaches on average 685,000 people per week. The President can average millions when he goes on air and more importantly can attract more than a million donors and volunteers focused on his re-election.

Shorter, to hell with Chris Matthews.

In southwestern Pennsylvania, a group of volunteers came together last Thursday to call voters and spread the word about Women for Obama. Shirley, a local supporter was there and reports:

“Word of mouth and an email from First Lady Michelle Obama brought out volunteers from near and far, old and new. From the youngest, Kyah Anne (11) to the most senior, Kay (74), phonebankers made hundreds of calls reaching out to women in the East Liberty, Homewood and Wilkinsburg communities to let them know about this important initiative and to recruit new volunteers for President Obama’s 2012 campaign.”

Huffington says now that she is disappointed in Obama and could even see herself voting Republican in the next presidential election. “To me,” she says, “the issues are more important than the party.” She pauses. “Trust me, I realize how hard it is to change the system, but Obama has demonstrated only the fierce urgency of sometime later, and at the same time the middle class is under assault”—she smiles—“which is of course the topic of my last book.”

When she began her campaign against Tim Geitner, who was working on financial reform, who was forcing banks to be more transparent ( the stress tests…), who was SUPPORTING the idea of a consumer protection agency . For the record, I think that Tim Geitner is a good public servant who tries his best.

She inflicted Schwarzenegger on California after leading a very ugly battle to oust Governor Davis, and then she hoodwinked a bunch of people into working for her for free and making her millions of dollars through her Obama-bashing machine, Huffington Post. Ariana is a Republican so of course she’ll vote R. She always was a Republican and always will be. Any “acting” to the contrary has been to make a buck. She comes up with some stupid nonsense to “explain” her so-called switch to voting R when she was always going to do so anyway. If any of her “Huff” readers ever thought anything else about her, they are either naive or delusional. She’s a grifter just like Palin, Perry, Newt, Cain and the rest of that breed.

Even they know their party is a stinking sinking mess.

How Did the GOP Lose its Way?
David Frum: “When I entered Republican politics during an earlier period of malaise, in the late seventies and early eighties, the movement got most of the big questions — crime, inflation, the Cold War — right. This time, the party is getting the big questions disastrously wrong.”

“In the aftershock of 2008, large numbers of Americans feel exploited and abused. Rather than workable solutions, my party is offering low taxes for the currently rich and high spending for the currently old, to be followed by who-knows-what and who-the-hell-cares. This isn’t conservatism; it’s a going-out-of-business sale for the baby-boom generation.”

YOUCH!~ GOP candidates b$tch slapped so hard by prominent ex-military figures-in defense of the POTUS- that the change fell out of their pockets!

Three of the leading military minds in the party, former NATO Commander General Wesley Clark, former Navy Secretary Richard Danzig, and retired Major General Paul Eaton, lit into the Republican field for their shifting positions and made clear that Obama’s military achievements — including the Al Qaeda leader’s death — will be fair political game in 2012.

“I think he is remarkably strong,” Danzig said of Obama’s national security record. “The more this election is about security issues the more advantageous that is to this president.”

The trio accused top Republicans of waffling on the major national security issues of the day, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the conflict in Libya, and efforts to prevent Iran from going nuclear. “While President Obama has kept his promises across the globe, the leading Republicans have been all over the map, offering sound-bite critiques and shifting positions with every change in the headlines as they seek partisan advantage,” Clark said. Much of his fire was focused on Romney, who authored a book, No Apology, that fiercely criticized the president’s foreign policy as weak and ineffective. He cited a 2007 quote from Romney downplaying Bin Laden’s capture in which the governor said “it’s not worth moving heaven and earth [and] spending billions of dollars just trying to catch one person.”

“But like all of us, [Romney] cheered his demise,” Clark added.

Truth be told, his ass wouldn’t have landed in the Hanoi Hilton if he’d payed more attention to his training instead of chasing skirts.

I’m happy some military people are speaking out. But they are democrats so it won’t make waves. But what a relly cool thing it would be if some republicans in the military or in the defense establishment gave a strong endorsement to POTUS in some media with large viewersip. People like General McMullen and Bob Gates, who have worked closely with POTUS, have a great deal of respect for him and sung his praises publicly on a few occasions. I have a fantasy that they will be invited on FOX on a live show some day and use this opportunity to tell O’Reilly and Co. that Barack Obama is a strong and brilliant leader and Commander- in-Chief. Oh… Just to imagine the face of the guys at Fox… I know… I know… Just a fantasy. One can dream…

So I really worried about my own girls and made sure to never compare them to ultra skinny models or equate their beauty to the size of their jeans.

Sounds trite now but that was the reality of many a young lady back then. Now their friends are all shapes and sizes & I just love how comfortable they all are in their skins. And so I notice these things FWIW LOL

Romney’s Trial Balloon For Privatized Veterans Care Explodes
    Benjy Sarlin November 21, 2011, 5:09 PM 5457 72

So much for that idea. Mitt Romney is rapidly walking back a proposal to partially privatize VA care after a wave of criticism from Democrats and veterans groups.

“I have no proposal of that nature,” Romney told the Nashua Telegraph on Monday. “We had a group of veterans and said, ‘tell me about the quality of your care.’ Some were concerned about the quality of their health care. I said, ‘what kind of options do you have, what do you think about a system that let you go to private as well as VA hospitals?’ The response was mixed, but I don’t have any proposal of that nature. We have a VA system that needs to be improved and I’ve got no plans to change that other than to make it better and to invest more money in providing for our veterans.”

Earlier this month in South Carolina, Romney floated the idea of a voucher system, telling a crowd at a BBQ restaurant: “Sometimes you wonder, would there be someway to introduce some private sector competition, somebody else that could come in and say, you know, each soldier gets X thousand dollars attributed to them and then they can choose whether they want to go on the government system or the private system and then it follows them, like what happens with schools in Florida where they have a voucher that follows them. Who knows.”

Democrats pounced with a web video highlighting the remarks. And Retired General Wesley Clark threw a parting shot at Romney as he retreated on the issue at a press conference on Monday.

“I’m not sure exactly what Governor Romney was proposing — what I’ve seen, he throws out an idea, he takes back the idea,” Clark said in response to a question from TPM. “But I wouldn’t want our veterans to depend on vouchers for their care. When men and women join the United States Armed Forces we have an obligation as a nation to support them…I don’t believe it’s appropriate to trust that to a private voucher system. The VA hospitals are set up to focus on the kind of care our veterans need and we should emphasize that as this president has done.

Wow, listening to Paisley in that clip was very timely after yesterdays NASCAR ‘incident’ !

It’s why I try to never paint a whole segment of our population with a broad brush. Between the warmth from these performers and the images of the other parts to yesterday’s events it’s plain to see that many people from all walks appreciate and admire the folks in the whitehouse.

There will always be those seeking to divide and conquer us. It’s better to refer to the ‘idiots that boo’d’ than to denigrate everyone in attendance.

Rev. Al said on his show that the Scott Walker Recall volunteers have already gotten one-fifth the # of signatures they need - in four days - and still have a couple of months to finish.

    Yee-haw!

I just want to say PBO is amazing. He just returned from a 9 day trip, interviewed with Rev. Al, signed the veteran’s bill, made a statement to the press, relaxed with Michelle and listened to nice country music. Thank God that we have such a wonderful couple in the WH. I just wanted to make this statement before I say good night.

He is the hardest working President that I have ever seen in the Oval Office in my lifetime. Let us keep him there. We need his leadership. Goodnight to our POTUS and FLOTUS and family.HZ

I like he’s getting back on the AJA push, not letting the super committee failure put the message back on debt/deficit. I’d like to see the President tie the jobs push into the debt/deficit discussion (or the vice versa) in that the more jobs created increases the tax base so more revenues and less folks claiming UEI - more folks with money to spend means more jobs created etc.

Best deficit reducer is more jobs created.

Rush Limbaugh Claims NASCAR Fans Booed Michelle Obama Because She’s Uppity
    November 21, 2025
    By Jason Easley

On his radio show today, Rush Limbaugh justified the booing of First Lady Michelle Obama at a NASCAR race as the crowd reacting to her uppityism.

Here is the audio from Media Matters:

Bottom line, we don’t like being told what to eat; we don’t like being told how much to exercise; we don’t like being told what we’ve got to drive; we don’t like wasting money; we don’t like our economy being bankrupted. We don’t like 14% unemployment. The question is, what the hell is there to cheer for when Miss Obama and Ms. Biden show up? NASCAR people, as are most people in this country, are mature, tolerant people, who fully understand when they’re being insulted and condescended to. And they remember being called bitter clingers. They know that in their hearts the Obamas don’t like them. We’ve taken notice of this, as has, by the way, Chris Matthews. And a lot of congressional Democrats are also fully aware that the Obamas just don’t like a lot of people, and they don’t like hanging around a lot of people.

I’ll tell you something else. We don’t like paying millions of dollars for Mrs. Obama’s vacations. The NASCAR crowd doesn’t quite understand why when the husband and the wife are going to the same place, the first lady has to take her own Boeing 757 with family and kids and hangers-on four hours earlier than her husband, who will be on his 747. NASCAR people understand that’s a little bit of a waste. They understand it’s a little bit of uppity-ism. First ladies have not been known to hop their own 757s four hours ahead of their husband when they’re both going to the same place.

Rush Limbaugh might have a set new record for the number of lies told about Michelle Obama in less than two minutes. I could go through them all, but anyone with a brain knows that unemployment is not 14%, the taxpayers aren’t paying millions of dollars for vacations, and Obama’s base is still as supportive as ever.

First Romney TV Ad Falsely Presents McCain Campaign Quote As Obama’s

The ad features a voice-over of Obama saying “if we keep talking about the economy, we’re going to lose.” Then-candidate Obama indeed said those words, perhaps dozens of times during the closing month of the 2008 campaign. The only problem? Obama was actually quoting the words of a strategist from Sen. John McCain’s campaign. Watch the Romney campaign’s blatantly dishonest ad:

Fake Democratic pollsters have stupid idea

The Wall Street Journal publishes nonsense from Doug Schoen and Pat Caddell, because they think you’re an idiot

    ==================================

I think it’s best to understand the Wall Street Journal editorial board’s decision to publish any given column by con artist pollsters Doug Schoen and Pat Caddell as basically an expression of contempt for people who read the Wall Street Journal editorial page.

Caddell and Schoen, two loser “Democratic” “pollsters,” regularly publish very lame link-bait columns about how if Democrats want to succeed electorally, they must immediately cease being Democrats, and become, instead, Republicans. This week’s variation on that theme: Barack Obama should step aside (already heard that one last year around this time) and allow himself to be replaced by Hillary Clinton, for the good of the party and the nation.
    .
    .
As I said, printing their editorials is an implicit admission that you think your audience is credulous and moronic. The people in charge of the Wall Street Journal are savvy enough about politics to know that all of this is bilge and bullshit. They know both that this will never happen and that it’d be a stupid suggestion even if it were within the realm of possibility. They just don’t care. They don’t care that they’re printing garbage, because they figure garbage will get some traffic from those engaged in the same game.

If I were a conservative American I’d be less outraged at the specter of liberal elites hypothetically disrespecting me from their coastal enclaves and much more pissed off that the people on my side are constantly peddling this bullshit.

It certainly is! And yet I still don’t think Drum “got it!” It still seems peripheral to his consciousness. Or he would have taken the ball and run with it—at least as far as the economic, job-creating ramifications of these agreements went.
