Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) praises President Obama’s Kansas speech, dubbing it the “Obama doctrine”:

“This President may have just coined an economic version of an Obama Doctrine. It is a vision for keeping the American dream alive for the middle class that directly rebuts the failed theory of trickle-down economics.”

    AFSCME Endorses Obama Again

Barack Obama has the endorsement of the AFSCME labor union for a second term, a union source tells TPM. The endorsement was expected, but signals that Obama will again be able to rely on the massive fundraising and GOTV prowess of organized labor.

This is great. Wouldn’t it be awesome if all the unions came out early and endorsed him? The NEA already has.

Hi Dorothy. That’s the same feeling I had and many of them came Saturday night and waited in the cold before the tickets were handed out on Sunday at noon. They seemed very intune with what he was saying and yet when you look at the pictures they seem rather sober.

Now I know why he was off schedule flying back to the airport. Kathleen wanted him to taste some real Kansas B-Ba-que to possibly take back to AF1 to eat on the trip back. I sat looking out my windows for them to come back over the house and went outside in the cold. Finally, they flew over 20 minutes late. This time there were four helicopters. I loved seeing them even if it wasn’t in person.

    Hello from KC.

It is really noisy around here. First I heard what sounded like several huge planes fly in towards MCI very loud but I had my times mixed up with the EST while I was expecting CST so I missed it but it was right on time.. There have been no sounds of planes today till this one. I just ran out and watched three helicopters not to far above me fly over. Funny though, one was white and very odd shaped with two regulary military type flying on each side. They were flying southwest and Osawatamie is southeast. Maybe they are going to follow I-435 to I 35. We have snow but just a slight dusting. It is very cold though. To quote Neil Diamond, “What a Beautiful Noise.” I’m going out again so signing off for now..

When the President left Peoria Airport here in Illinois, my 10-year-old grandson and I “shared a moment” outside, looking up, so we could spot Air Force One. He really enjoyed that. We have no idea if the lone plane we saw actually was AF1, but we decided we’d say it was!

I get really excited whenever the President comes to Los Angeles, because I can see the airplanes taking off and landing from my balcony (I live in the Marina not too far from the airport). I usually find a reason to work from home on those days so I can watch out for AF1 and Marine One. It’s exciting every time!

Just thinking about how PBO has inspired so many of us to follow his administration and to feel included in his presidency. We are calling our Congressmen, signing petitions, emailing, writing letters, contacting the media and convincing others to support him. He has invoked a sense of purpose and committment in all of us to be there for all of our Country. So many of us are first timers in our level of political involvement. Why? Because he has touched something in us that no one else has been able to stir. He is special and makes me feel special to be supporting him.

My “fave”, Andrea Mitchell, who is in Israel for a new msnbc station there, just said that President Obama will need more than a big stick. Always looking for the slam. Now she’s saying that Obama “is at least CONSIDERING visiting Israel early next year, he has not been here since his election”—-which I think is at the root of all Mitchell’s animosity toward Obama.

Collins, McCaskill Push Millionaire Surtax That Exempts ‘Small Business’
    December 6, 2011, 10:27 AM

Two senators, one Dem one Republican, are trying to break the GOP objection to raising taxes on millionaires to fund job creation measures. If they’re successful, it will become the key to passing President Obama’s payroll tax cut proposal, and driving a wedge between powerful anti-tax activists and the Republican party. But if Republicans object it will expose the hollow nature of their overwhelming opposition to taxing the affluent. When Republicans object to small tax increases on millionaires they claim Democrats are proposing to raise taxes on “small businesses” or “job creators.”

To strip Republicans of this objection, Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) and Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) are proposing to exempt these entities from the millionaire’s surtax, and put the remaining revenue to paying for President Obama’s payroll tax holiday.

Eric Boehlert: ‘Fox News Primary’ is ‘Slowly Destroying the Republican Party’
    December 05, 2025 07:15 PM

Media Matters Eric Boehlert joined the Ed Schultz show to discuss the strategy by the GOP presidential candidates to continually run to Fox News and then demonize the rest of the media and how that’s working out for them. As Boehlert noted, it may work to win some of the early primary states, but they’re not going to have a lot more trouble continuing it in the general election.

    ~snip~

Cain’s spectacular fall mirrors recent GOP implosions, like the ones suffered by Donald Trump and Rick Perry, both of whom were heralded by Fox News as can’t-miss stars for 2012. Not to mention Fox News’ other disappointments; the possible candidates who the channel relentlessly hyped and pleaded with to run (Chris Christie, Sarah Palin), only to have them beg off, leaving Ailes’ crew crest-fallen.

The futile search for the Fox News Candidate of 2012 continues.

Michigan’s Radical Assault on Public Education
    Mon Dec. 5, 2011 3:00 AM PST

The list of initiatives reads like a grand plan to dismantle public education as we know it: Slash education spending. Outsource public teachers. Curb collective-bargaining rights. Kneecap teachers’ unions. Open the floodgates to charter and “cyber” schools. Welcome to education reform in the state of Michigan, where a Republican-dominated Legislature and a GOP governor are pushing one of the broadest anti-union, pro-privatization agendas in the country.

Although some of Michigan’s legislative attempts to overhaul public education have met resistance, state lawmakers have made an unprecedented push toward for-profit schools, dubious online curricula, and budget cuts and anti-union measures that would make the public teaching profession ever more insecure.

I remember how nervous I was for the debates in 2008 both Primary and General. Even when BO improved as a debater you would never know how the format of the debate would go to ruin the showing such as the ABC Debate that aired all of the drummed up scandals for Obama and cut to commercials so he could not get the last word in. I worry about Gingrich being the GOP winner as he is so forceful sounding correct as he is such a practiced liar. I would hope his extreme ethics problems would stop any thoughts of electing him to the presidency. I also worry about Romney tricking people into supporting him as if he is a gret businessman. I am an old-fashion worrywart. It does me good to hear others on here have similar feelings.

Bank of China will be part owner of Saab
    December 4, 2025 17:24

After its own country declined to save it, Saab looked elsewhere and agreed today that it will give the Bank of China part ownership of its car company, according to Reuters. Last month, it appeared that Chinese investors Pang Da Automobile Trade Co. and Youngman would step in and rescue Saab. However, the Bank of China would now replace Pang Da and together with Youngman, the two organizations would own under half of the company.

The bank is ranked as China’s fourth-largest bank by market value. The move would help the struggling car company, which has not released a new car in months due to unpaid salaries and bills, according to Reuters. Furthermore, this agreement could help Saab salvage its relationship with General Motors.

Amid cuts, US military withdraws from Europe: US pullouts from Iraq and Afghanistan mask a larger drawdown in Europe.
    September 4, 2025 08:34

The winding down of these wars — Iraq by Christmas, Afghanistan tentatively by the end of 2013 — will end a traumatic period that saw American military forces do many of the things policymakers had foresworn after Vietnam. Yet for all the focus on those drawdowns, the larger strategic change underway is taking place in Europe, where American troops have been stationed in large numbers since World War II.

With little fanfare outside a muted flag folding ceremony in Wiesbaden, Germany, the final American division in Europe — the U.S. 1st Armored Division, which fought its way from North Africa to the Italian Alps during the war — packed up and left for its base at Fort Bliss, Texas, in May.

Still based in Europe at the moment are four Army “Brigade Combat Teams,” three in Germany and a fourth in Vicenza, Italy. The lighter, more deployable BCTs emerged from a major reform of the army’s force structure in the past decade and number about 3,500-strong, compared to the 10,000-12,000 soldier divisions they replaced. One of those four — likely one of the Germany-based BCTs, will be withdrawn in 2012.

GOP kills qualified judicial nominee with filibuster
    By Steve Benen

This is simply an outrageous abuse that further undermines the integrity of the Senate.

Senate Republicans on Tuesday filibustered the nomination of Caitlin Halligan to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, blocking a nominee tapped last year by President Obama to serve on one of the country’s most powerful courts.

Tuesday’s final roll call vote on cutting off debate was 54 to 45.. One Republican — Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) — joined all 53 members of the Democratic caucus in voting to move ahead with Halligan’s nomination, leaving the former New York state solicitor general six votes short of the 60 votes necessary for ending debate.

This afternoon, at least 99 different groups of Americans outraged at income inequality and the lack of jobs are at the U.S. capitol, demanding that Members of Congress support jobs legislation. The action, called “Take Back The Capitol” is one of the few times that Members of Congress will be directly confronted by unemployed people.

About half an hour ago, a group of demonstrators entered Rep. Joe Walsh’s (R-IL) office. These protesters asked to meet with the congressman. The Chief of Staff, Justin Roth, said that Walsh was busy and could only meet with them later but offered to meet with the protesters himself. “I think we’ll stay,” said one protester. Roth shrugged and the protesters sat down and decided to occupy the office until Walsh arrives. Watch it:

    —-

A staffer asked the protesters if they’d like to watch some news rather than the House floor on the television in the office. The protesters said they would, and it was quickly decided by consensus that the television channel would be changed to Fox News.

There’s nothing quite like watching the most shameless political flip-flopper of his generation spend five minutes condemning someone else of being a flip-flopper.
If you haven’t seen this clip of Mitt Romney in 2004, it’s just stunning. (via Jamil Smith)

At the time, Republicans were so heavily invested in attacking John Kerry as a flip-flopper, it was the only thing GOP officials and surrogates were prepared to talk about. In this case, Romney was speaking to Republican convention delegates in September 2004, and he blasted his home state’s senator on the topic du jour.

“In politics it’s pretty much standard operating procedure that when you’re running for office you look at your opponent’s record, you find someplace where he or she has changed position, and you say they’re a flip flopper, and that’s a pretty standard thing. But in this case, this guy really is! This guy is different than you have experienced before. […]

“I’ve tried to think why it is that he has changed so often — why he finds it so difficult to come down on one side of an issue, instead sort of floats between both issues, both sides of things…. For those who don’t understand how he can be so vacillating, it stems from that fact that he is very conflicted, that he is drawn in two different directions — very powerfully. If he’s with an audience, he wants to identify with and satisfy that audience, and will say what he thinks they want to hear. And if that audience, for instance, is on one side of an issue he’ll follow that, on another, he’ll follow another.”

Voting machine design blamed for New York’s 60,000 lost ballots
    Tuesday, December 6, 2025

It wasn’t voter fraud that caused 60,000 ballots to be tossed from the 2010 election in New York – it was poorly designed voting machines. According to a study from the New York University’s Brennan School for Justice, the new optical voting system confused voters so much that they ended up casting their votes for two candidates, or “overvoting.”

For the first time, there were tens of thousands of people who lost their votes on the new system,” he said. “And we have to make adjustment to make sure we don’t see a repeat of this.” The New York State Board of Elections plans to provide voters with a better warning of overvoting ahead of the 2012 elections, although it’s not clear whether those new guidelines will be in time.

    Trump vs Romney
National Review attacks Gingrich for agreeing to attend the upcoming Trump-moderated debate:

Sure, we see the angle: Gingrich excels in debates and he knows it, and in light of his threat to Romney in Iowa, his participation all but dares the yet-uncommitted Mitt to irk the pro-Trump rump of GOP voters by refusing. As a serious contender running a campaign with maximal pride in its own seriousness, Gingrich lowers himself by association with this consummately unserious man. Romney should refuse to follow suit.

Weigel has more on Trump’s motivations. Patrick Caldwell wonders if Trump will revive birtherism:

It’s a terrifyingly plausible scenario that Trump will use his perch later this month to quiz each of the candidates on Obama’s birth certificate; hopefully they won’t take the bait and will rebut Trump’s crazy ramblings, but since the majority have visited Trump Tower, they may kowtow with the hopes of securing the reality TV star’s endorsement.

And wouldn’t that accurately reflect the reality of the GOP these past two years? It’s a talk radio show pretending to be interested in governing.

GOP Strategists: Lay Off Obama, People Feel Sorry For Him

With election season upon us, Republican strategists are urging party surrogates not to attack President Obama personally. Although that approach may be tempting given his low approval ratings they warn it could backfire because voters “feel sorry for him.”

On a conference call Tuesday run by Nicholas Thompson, Vice President of Tarrance Group — which Yahoo News “accessed via a clerical error” — Thompson warned that though Obama’s overall approval is low, his personal approval ratings are quite high. Voters “don’t think he’s an evil man who’s out to change the United States,” explained Thompson, and Republicans should “exercise some caution” when going after him personally.

Obama’s job approval rating has been in the low 40s recently, but it’s true that voters like him personally. According to CNN, in November voters’ personal approval of the president was nearly 70%.

Former George W. Bush press secretary Ari Fleisher, also on the call, directed Republicans to attack Obama on flip-flopping — the issue Democrats are currently using to attack Mitt Romney. Rather than play defense, Fleisher suggested turning the attacks around: “When it comes to flip flopping, Barack Obama is the king of flip flopping.”

Robert Reich Exposes The GOP’s Dirty Little Payroll Tax Cut Secret
    December 5, 2025

Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich was on Countdown discussing the dirty little secret behind the GOP’s tax cut hypocrisy. If taxes are lowered for the rich, everyone else must pay more. Reich said, “I think the most important point is that the president is pointing out very very clearly for the entire country to understand the two pieces of hypocrisy here. Number one that the Republicans don’t want to raise taxes on the rich, but that may require and mean that taxes are going to be raised on almost everybody else, but number two that suddenly they are sort of born again oh, you’ve got to pay for tax cuts. Tax cuts don’t pay for themselves when for years they have been saying that tax cuts pay for themselves, and they can’t have it both ways.”

The former Labor Secretary talked about what will happen if the payroll tax cut and unemployment insurance are not extended, “Eighty percent of Americans pay more in payroll taxes than they do in income taxes, so this is a big deal, and a thousand dollars on average per family or worker for that matter is a big deal for most families. The second is the extended unemployment benefits and given how many people are actually still unemployed in this economy, that’s important. It’s puts money in their pockets. They can turn around and buy things, and that creates jobs or at least keeps people in jobs. If the Republicans have their way and neither of these things is extended, neither the payroll tax nor the extended unemployment benefits then it will be a tremendous fiscal drag on the economy.”

The Truth About Pundit Crap: Could Jon Meacham Be the Most Insufferable Human in Washington?

I have long proposed that every single major elite political pundit be frog-marched away from the buffet tables inside the Beltway and deep into the Blue Ridge Mountains, there to be confined to a re-education facility where they will clear trails, and reclaim swampland, and repair dams, and make life lovely for the furry little woodland creatures until every damn one of these hacks has learned not to look at the incredible universe of grifters and charlatans that is our current political elite and in them see the giants of the past. Comes now Parson Meacham, and I suspect he’s going to be working out in the woods until the squirrels up and bury him some winter.

We tend to forget the partisanship of yesteryear, preferring to re-imagine our history as a sure and steady march toward greatness. The problem with such narratives is that they are in fact ahistorical. Franklin Roosevelt was hated by a large number of Americans in real time; some people actually celebrated when word came of his death in April 1945. From Jefferson to Jackson to Lincoln to FDR to Reagan, every great president inspires enormous affection and enormous hostility. We’ll all be much saner, I think, if we remember that history is full of surprises (both good and bad) and things that seemed absolutely certain one day are often unimaginable the next. (Remember President Palin?)

Yes, if you are unusually dim, or unusually badly read, or four years old, you may well re-imagine things this way. If you are not, you will recall that, not all that long ago, the Washington political class, with Newt Gingrich proudly (if ironically) in the lead, was in hot pursuit of a president’s penis. I think it’s safe to say that anyone who was alive then, and did not as a result drink himself into alcoholic dementia, still recalls that presidents can be both greatly liked and greatly disliked. The same, it should be noted, can be said for the music of ABBA and the taste of beets. So what? And if Meacham can find a single person not confined to a secure facility who thought it “absolutely certain” that Sarah Palin would be president, even for one day, I’ll let him off his work detail reclaiming the swamp for Christmas. President Palin remains as “unimaginable” a concept as is thoracic surgeon Charles Manson, M.D.

This is so true-every president who tried to do something significant that change the course of history was hated for it, as far back as the founding fathers. Weird as it may seem, I actually remember being a toddler when FDR died and walking in our small town in New York with my father and hearing people in shops say how glad they were that the president was dead. I know I felt scared by it, which it why it sticks in my mind. Yet when they show historical photos of that era, all you see are the rows of people crying along his funeral route.

Here’s a good article that was written by Winning Progressive.~

Progressivism Is About Saving Capitalism From Itself
    December 3, 2025

It has often been said that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt saved capitalism from itself. What that means is that FDR took office at the lowest depths of the Great Depression, when it was clear that rampant uncontrolled capitalism had not only failed to benefit the more than one-third of Americans were ill-housed, ill-clothed, and ill-fed, but had also collapsed on itself due to the uncontrolled excesses that unregulated free markets had created. But rather than scrapping the system, FDR went about fixing it by establishing the regulations that capitalism needs to function effectively, the policies needed to give people confidence in the system, and the programs needed to ensure that a larger and larger proportion of Americans would benefit from the system. As a result, the free market system, combined with effective New Deal governance, led to a thriving economy and the largest and most secure middle class in history.

    ~snip~

The simple fact is that a thriving capitalist system can be maintained only with progressive policies that set the ground rules, invest in the public sphere, provide a safety net, and support the rights of workers to organize for their interests. We learned that lesson in the 1930s when such progressive New Deal policies saved capitalism from the Great Depression. Unfortunately we forgot that lesson over the past thirty years of conservative economic policy. Let’s hope we relearn the lesson again soon.

Everytime I think his last speech was better than the previous ones; he tops himself all over again. My goodness. The speech was phenomenal and lo and behold sane folks in the media and on twitter are acknowledging as much. This speech was a defining moment in our nation’s history. It was a philosophical call that spoke of a make or break moment for the middleclass. This was bigger than a campaign speech. This was a landmark call to action. He called on us as a nation to dig down and realize that “on the whole we will rise to the top or fall to the bottom; together.”

So much of what you say is true, however, Eastern Kansas up to Lawrence, KU and Wichita are True Blue. It’s the wheat field farmlands inbetween that are so Ruby Red. In my lifetime we’ve had 3 Democratic Governors, Kathleen Sebelius elected twice after she served as the Insurance Commisioner. I always get a lift remembering when Fred Phelps picketed a Shawnee Mission School and the entire school came out carrying signs with hearts and singing “All You Need Is Love” being lead by their Senior Class President, an openly gay student along with teachers and parents.

    The Republican Platform
    Written by: Joe Markowitz
    Saturday, December 3, 2025

So what are the real Republican priorities? Helping the wealthy keep more of their money, obviously. They cop to that. Shrinking social programs such as Medicare. The Ryan budget plan they all voted for does that. And perhaps, as about half the population now believes, trying to stall the economic recovery so they can benefit in the next election. So let’s have some honesty in next year’s election campaigns. Republicans might as well give up the pretense that they are most interested in cutting taxes, reducing the deficit and improving the economy. The public now understands that Republicans are in fact running on a platform of helping the rich get richer, cutting benefits for the poor and middle class, and refusing to cooperate in any way with the other party so that they can blame the Democrats for anything that goes wrong. Being forced to run on ideas like that, it’s no wonder the Republican presidential field is in disarray.

    Awesome speech!

The last couple of days I have seen an article, or two, about people finally realizing that President Obama did not forsake them but has had their backs all this time. Since I am amongst friends, I will admit that my reaction to these folks were not so positive, I rolled my eyes when I read that Spike Dolomite Ward, the woman with breast cancer, said:

“So this is my public apology. I’m sorry I didn’t do enough of my own research to find out what promises the president has made good on. I’m sorry I didn’t realize that he really has stood up for me and my family, and for so many others like us. I’m getting a new bumper sticker to cover the one that says “Got nope.” It will say “ObamaCares.”

I am so sick of folks being lazy … it is in our best interest to be informed. We are reaping the ignorance of the 2010 debacle that gifted us with this do-nothing Congress and Governors who are succeeding in destroying their states and folks are still fine with sitting in the dark? I am sorry but I get ticked off when I see our president pour his heart out and try to appeal to our better nature and yes, common sense, and still they sit in the dark.

Today, once again, he gave us a clear picture of where we are and where we need to be. Let’s see if folks are going to listen and learn or just continue to sit in the dark.

    Ok, Rant over! :-)

couldn’t agree more CT- after 3 years of his Presidency.. and 5-6 years of his speeches & his votes in Congress.. this ignorance by folks is a chosen ignorance, which is fine as long as they keep it to themselves.. but when they get online and tweet/blog that this “Obama is New” is hogwash and old and very very tiresome.

What they need to do is say: I have been wrong… it isn’t POTUS who has been lacking, it is ME who has been lacking.

Who are we here- on this site? Women, men, young, elderly, middle aged… professionals & laborers, students, disabled, employed, unemployed, under-employed.. politically savvy & polical novices.. Asian, Caucasian, AA, Black, Hispanic, Latino, NA.. American, Canadian, French, British, Irish, Australians… Mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, grandparents.. we represent this country & this planet.. and WE manage to stay informed, knowledgeable and aware and HONEST. The only thing stopping others in this country/world is themselves- by choice.

I absolutely agree with you. There is a large segment of the populations that is WILLFULLY ignorant. They don’t know and they don’t want to know. It could be conscious or subconscious. Either way, for a lot of people “ignorance truly is bliss”.

Yep.. but then they complain and attack… like the guy at my VA a couple of months ago who kept talking crap while POTUS was giving a speech on tv, calling President Obama “a waste of electricity”. He finally shutup.. and I think for some people it was the first time they’d heard the President”s actual words instead of the made up goop by the media.

          December 6, 2025 at 4:35 pm

Yes they are willfully ignorant but in part that is because they rely on the media to inform them both the progressive media and the traditional media and they simply don’t do their job. As great of a masterpiece that this speech was it will only be seen by most in 30 second sound bites. I really wish this had been a prime time speech. AMERICA needed to hear his message but sadly far too many won’t.

I agree Donna, the media is an absolute failure to all of us in this country… and yet when I knocked on doors back in 2008- even here in small town redstate ND- folks knew they couldn’t trust the media- they said so often to me.. and yet they also would repeat the gunk they’d heard on teevee.. such as all the Rev Wright made up nonsense.. etc. Thus even though we know our media lies, spins and misrepresents-we (the people) give them credence. I don’t know the answers. I just feel the excuses for not knowing who & what this President is about- are long past believable or justifiable.

An example: Zerlina Maxwell- who from what I gather on Twitter, seemingly intelligent & thoughtful young woman, law student I believe and writer for either the Grio or the Root (could be wrong on this).. today after POTUS’s speech tweeted something to the effect: I like this NEW President Obama. I stopped following her immediately. I’d already argued this line of bs with another ‘follower’.. am tired of this silliness. These are not stupid people, these are supposedly aware folk.. choosing to play word games and using President Obama to further their own agenda. I’m tired of folks using this man as their stepping stone to notoriety.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood confronted congressional Republicans for their objections to President Obama’s high-speed rail initiatives Tuesday, telling them they should get on board with the president’s rail push because their criticisms have been misguided.

“We are right at the point where we were when they started the interstate system,” an animated LaHood told lawmakers, drawing a parallel to the development of the federal highway system. “We are not going to be dissuaded by critics.”

Obama’s rail initiative has become a lightning rod for conservatives who think it is a waste of money to invest in high-speed train projects across the car-crazy U.S., particularly when the nation is focused on reducing its deficit. Tuesday, LaHood won few converts.

Watching a replay of Martin Bashir. So funny - he had on former Rep. Alan Grayson, who mentioned the R answer to health care is “to do a lot of praying.” Martin responded (this is way paraphrased on my part), “I don’t think we can assume all Republicans are religious. In fact, I’m quite convinced that many are atheists.” That got quite a chuckle out of Grayson.

    Hello Fred,
All is well today? It is cloudy, cold and a little rain here in NYC. The speech made me feel sunny. I shared in the previous post my experience of seeing the President in person, live and shaking his hand. I know for myself that he is a special person, a gift from God. I felt so many feelings that night. It is hard to explain. I was angry at the people who are constantly fighting against him and lying just because they hate him. I know now that it is mostly based on jealousy. I was proud and felt grateful to be alive to witness someone who cares and is courageous and brave enough to speak the truth. I know that we must not stop praying for him.

That was strong in my spirit……even if I can’t donate every time that I wish, I can pray. He works so hard. His face was stern, focused and determined. At one point, I wished that he was home with his family. I was nervous for him when he came to greet us and shake hands. Even though, I could hardly wait! I heard myself saying that . heard myself saying, or someone who sounded like me, Bless you, Mr. President. I will continue to pray for you. In my mind, he answered but I just saw lips moving. Probably mine…….trying not to say something that would cause the SS pull me over the partition. (lol)…… It was a privilege. I am grateful.

My psychologizing take on the two front-runners. I think that Newt will consolidate his hold on the base because he is the aspirational version of the Republican base. He is what the old white men I know want to be; they have money and they are comfortable but they wield no power in this world. They are powerless to stop the tide of brown people/sexting teens/mooslims that they see as an existential threat. Newt, for them, stands athwart this deluge and says, with authority, “STOP!” That’s exactly what they want to hear and he’s the unprepossessing troll they want to hear it from. He resembles the man they see in the mirror.

Romney, by contrast, is their more successful competitor from across town, or the next big town over. A soi disant Republican but, so the reasoning goes, corrupted by his undeserved wealth. Educated back east (Stanford and BYU in addition to faih Hahvahd), travels to Europe (speaks French? French? You gotta be shittin’ me!)And with Romney it is more than whispered that he as some sympathy with the ideals of a welfare state. He has an actual record to prove it. Too handsome as well. That is why he repulses the base.

I want it to be Gingrich so bad, these are the tales I tell myself.

The President Outlines His Second Term Agenda

    =====================================

Posted on 12/06/2025 at 4:07 pm by Bob Cesca

From Kansas, the president made yet another case for liberal economic policy and liberal government, while revealing the theme of his re-election campaign and the agenda of his second term. It was yet another speech in which he attempted to bury Reaganomics:
    .
    .
This speech outlined the theme of his second term. Economic fairness/equality and rebuilding the middle class American dream.
    .
    .
This is what we’ll be voting for next year.

Greg Sargents reaction to “the speech”.

    {Snip}

Political scientists will tell you that individual speeches don’t matter; and that grand themes are very unlikely to supplant the direct experience of the economy as a motivator of voters. But we’ll be hearing these themes countless times between now and election day. And anyone who had hoped that Obama and Dems would make an unapologetically populist and moral case against inequality and economic injustice central to Campaign 2012 should be pretty pleased with what they heard today.

Looking through the pics/captions I felt like Halperin was trying to do a Chipsticks/Obama Diary style of coverage of Romney, but it fell completely flat. The pics are awful! what was with including the pic of the dogs and the dino stuffed animal? So many of the pics are so close up that you can’t even see the whole scene. I couldn’t help think that that was done on purpose because it was obvious that try as he might Romney can’t draw crowds or enthusiasm like PBO. I hated looking through the pics actually because I kept thinking it’d look like Halperin was getting clicks/visits/fans.

Obviously they have some kind of amnesia, willful or otherwise. President Obama started this with his speech in which he eviscerated the Paul Ryan Plan and then moved flawlessly and consequentially to the American Jobs Act. Most of the points made today were made then if in broader terms.

If there was no obvious goal (getting PBO re-elected with proper majorities) despair would abound.

That OWS shifted the convervation to jobs is more arguable, especially given that President Obama did pivot to jobs in early September and has sustained his jobs push ever since.

But on the topic of income inequality, there isn’t any doubt that OWS deserves credit for it becoming such a central topic in our political debate today. All you need to do is do a Google search. From September 15 to September 30, the term “income inequality” got about 953,000 hits. But from October 1 to October 15, when OWS really got big, the hits for the term “income inequality” suddenly jumped tenfold, garnering 9 million hits. That was no coincidence. The reason was the arrival of OWS and its “99% versus the 1%” framing.

And that isn’t a bad thing either. Obama supporters have been clamoring for the left to organize and rally public opinion in order to push things to the left instead of bitching at President Obama to do everything for them. The argument was that for President Obama to move left, he needed the political winds to be going that way as well. Well OWS appears to be doing that now, and not surprisingly President Obama, being the canny politician that he is, is moving that way as well. Frankly my quibble with OWS and the left is that they didn’t do something along these lines back in 2009 and 2010 when it might’ve offset the Tea Partiers or produced a better political environment for passing more progressive legislation, and perhaps forestalled a Republican takeover of the House. We definitely wouldn’t have been consumed these past few years with deficit and debt talk if there was an OWS around. But better late than never.

California and Nevada Attorney Generals Announce Joint Investigation into Foreclosure Fraud
    December 6, 2011, 2:39 pm

Attorney Generals Kamala D. Harris of California and Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada announced a joint investigation into foreclosure fraud on Tuesday. Though necessary nation-wide, the action is particularly salient geographically, as California and Nevada are the two states hit hardest by the housing crisis. In 2010, Nevada had the country’s highest foreclosure rate at 9.4%, while California, with the second highest rate, had the largest number of total foreclosures: 569,000 filings.

Hillary Clinton to UN: “Gay Rights Are Human Rights, And Human Rights Are Gay Rights,” LGBT Rights Will Guide Foreign Policy
By: Igor Volsky and Zack Ford

Recognizing that America’s own record on LGBT equality is “far from perfect,” Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called on nations around the world to recognize that “gay rights are human rights and human rights are gay rights,” during a speech in Geneva, Switzerland this afternoon. Clinton’s address builds on a memorandum President Obama issued earlier today directing all agencies to “promote and protect the human rights of LGBT persons.”

Clinton also announced that the administration is launching a $3 million global equality fund to support the work of civil society organizations working on these issues around the world. The fund will help human rights groups “record facts so they can target their advocacy, learn how to use the law as a tool, manage their budgets, train their staffs and forge partnerships with women’s organizations and other Human Rights groups,” Clinton said.

A coal company is to pay $210m (£135m) in damages for one of the worst US mining tragedies in decades, which killed 29 men in April last year.

The mine’s new owner will compensate victims’ families, pay fines and upgrade safety features.

It is the biggest settlement ever reached in a US mine disaster.

Officials say the accident at the Upper Big Branch pit in West Virginia was caused by methane gas, coal dust and faulty machinery.

A federal investigation into the incident has found that the mine violated 369 safety regulations, 12 of which contributed to the blast.

Under the deal announced on Tuesday, Alpha Natural Resources - which acquired the mine’s owner, Massey Energy, this year - will pay the fine.

Other lawsuits filed by employees and relatives of the victims are still pending.

The agreement includes $128m in safety upgrades, research and training, and $35m in fines for federal mine-safety violations.

It also allocates $46.5m for the victims’ relatives - or about $1.5m per family

[...] Vermont is the nation’s healthiest state, according to the report, followed by fellow Northeastern states New Hampshire and Connecticut in the second and third spots respectively. Rounding out the top 5 healthiest states were Hawaii and Massachusetts. On the other end of the spectrum was Mississippi as the least healthiest, followed by Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Alabama.

I think what we have to remember is that most people aren’t news junkies like we are. The cable nets aim for a very small segment of news junkies, and tailor their programming to what they think that audience is. The traditional networks, on the other hand, aim to satisfy as broad an audience as they can. (Notice that there’s no nightly news show on Fox stations.) They might be a bit slipshod at times, but in terms of fairness the traditional nightly news programs are far ahead than the cable nets. And their audience dwarfs that of CNN, MSNBC and Fox.

Another house burns to the ground in Obion County TN because the owner failed to pay the $75.00 fire fee.

OBION COUNTY, Tenn. — A local family watches their home burn to the ground and just a few feet behind them, firefighters watch, too.

The last time this happened, the city of South Fulton, Tennessee, received a lot of heat nationwide for this policy. That was more than a year ago but nothing has changed.

The mayor said it comes down to simple business. If they don’t collect fire fees, the fire department can’t survive and if they make exceptions to the rule, no one will ever pay the fee.

Besides that, he likes the “pay for spray” policy and said it’s fair.

“In this case, she credits President Obama with being a lifesaver. But you know what? Being informed is also a lifesaver. By the way, anti-choicers, this is a much more accurate definition of “Pro-Life”.”

I have heart disease and have been unable to get health insurance at ANY PRICE for 10 long years. I qualified for the PCIP program however and my premiums are equivalent to what I was paying 10 years ago before I was dropped by my insurance company after I had stents put in, and my deductible and co-pay are less. I now have my own health advisor who is essentially a health coach.

I had given up, I knew my next episode would either kill me or impoverish me… great choices. Whenever I get into a discussion with right -wing morons who want to repeal “Obamacare” I tell them my story. Mostly they STFU and turn and walk away.

Lominska, you should write a letter to the editor and send to several papers - spread the word!

Please help us educate folks. Its not just RW ers who are confused by the propaganda, as this story points out.

THIS is why some of us get very angry when so-called left leaning pundits or bloggers get shit wrong and bash Obama with distortions! It is hurtful to all of us. EVeryone: check your facts first. Primary sources. Someone going after a huge corporate interest like the health care industry, or Wall Street is going to be lied about. Count on it.

Today the country saw why we voted this man in the White House. They saw why there isn’t anyone on the GOP side who is in his in his league. We saw why Christie and so many others refuse to run. It was a GREAT speech.
