BREAKING! Pres Obama pens an Op-Ed just this evening in the Connecticut Post:

President Barack Obama: Now is the time
Published 6:22 pm, Wednesday, January 16, 2025
As a society, our first task must be to care for our children — to shield them from harm and give them the tools they need not only to pursue their dreams, but to help build this country. That is how we will be judged. And in the wake of the tragedy in Newtown, it’s clear we have a long way to go.
That’s why, last month, I asked Vice President Biden to lead an effort to come up with concrete steps we can take right now to keep our kids safe, help prevent mass shootings, and reduce the broader epidemic of gun violence in this country. And on Wednesday, I put forward a specific set of proposals based on Joe’s recommendations. Because while there is no law or set of laws that can prevent every senseless act of violence completely, if there is even one thing we can do to reduce this violence — if even one life can be saved — we have an obligation to try.
As President, I’m committed to doing my part. That’s why I signed 23 executive actions giving law enforcement, schools, mental health professionals, and the public health community the tools they need to help reduce gun violence.
Watching Ed, I saw where a principal were speaking and it was said that some of those kids in Newtown was shot 3-11 times, they never had a chance. Oh my Lord. I am about to contact my Congressman and Senator to see where they stand on what POTUS put forth today.
pbo looks great in that first picture- good to see him smiling. he’s been biting his lip way too much lately. probably biting his tongue, too. i sure wish he could have spent more time playing in the ocean in hawaii this year.
Mine too … and ours. Those of us who have waited almost a lifetime … since JFK … to see this, hear this, feel this, to have a President like him. It is awesome.
You are so right, daisydem - since JFK, we’ve been waiting for THIS President. I feel lucky every day to know he’s in the White House, with Joey by his side.
I’m sorry Dudette. I look up, i looked down, I looked on his back and I looked at his front, yet nowhere did I see your name engraved on PBO’s sexy self. Methinks you might be a tad bit delusional. That man thar is ALL MINE!!!!
During his remarks, President Obama asked each one of us to call his/her Congressional representatives to ask two or three questions: “Do you support universal background checks on gun purchases? and Do you support Congressional legislation on restrictions on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines? And if the answer is ‘No’, ask Why not?? [quotation may not be exact]
Just got off the phone with the phone staffer for Lewis (GA-4). He says that the Congressman agrees with the President completely. BUT, “the other side has been much more vocal today.?
I called the offices of my U.S. Representative and was assured that she supports the President 100%! I was not surprised because before she was elected to Congress she was a teacher and she also served on the School Board. The same was true of the response I received from the offices of my two U.S. Senators. I am also asking friends to call their Representatives in the other four Congressional districts in SD county, including two that elected Republicans.
I’m so glad the President when he walk out of the Oval Office, he goes upstairs to his family and hug his daughters and let them know how much he loves them. He has Michelle he can talk too. President Obama has always said that Michelle and the girls keep him grounded. Dealing with all the mess he have to deal with, thank God for his family, their love and support. Being President Is not a easy job. Bless our President, and his family.

Little Grace McDonnell,
I hope and pray that you are painting all over heaven and sharing all of your beautiful hues of pink all over the beaches. Paint pink, Grace. Paint pink and lots of pink, Sweet Little Grace. (((((((((( We Love Pink Also and Beaches)))))))))))).
We will think of pinks and beaches for you, when we know that Your POTUS go into his private office in the White House and look at your beautiful painting and see you in your beautiful painting, Grace.
In the middle of Health Care Reform fight Jarret recalls:
Valerie Jarrett, White House senior adviser (2009-present): We’re sitting in the Oval Office, and the president asked [the legislative director] Phil Schiliro — who always could figure out what’s that third way — “Phil, what’s the third way?? Phil said, “Mr. President, unless you’re feeling lucky, I don’t know what the third way is.? And so the president gets up from his chair and he walks over and he looks out the window, and he says, “Phil, where are you?? Phil says, “I’m in the Oval Office.? He goes, “What’s my name?? Phil says, “President Obama.? He goes, “Of course I’m feeling lucky.?
Night of Bin Laden raid:
Pfeiffer: I went to see “Fast and Furious 5.? In the middle of the movie, I check my BlackBerry, and I have an e-mail from someone on the national security staff inviting me to a meeting. So I leave the movie to get back to the White House. As I’m coming in, the cast of “True Blood? is outside the gate trying to figure out why their tour has been canceled. We decided we’re going to do [the announcement] in the East Room and [the senior adviser David] Plouffe and I walk over to look at the setup. There’s just two guys slowly moving chairs. Plouffe and I are like, We better go get people so we can do this ourselves. We may have killed bin Laden, but we don’t have a room to speak in.
Biden: As I got out of the car at [the vice-presidential residence], my wife was sitting in her bathrobe on the steps. She gave me a big hug, and we could hear people at our gate singing “God Bless America.?
VP Biden on Meet The Press:
Biden: There was a little apoplexy around here. I answered as antiseptically as I could. But I was going to sit there and not say what I believe at this point in my career? They can have the goddamn job. The president walked in, and he started laughing. He said, “Well, Joe, the thing I’ve always loved about you is you say what you believe.? I mean it. I give you my word. He gave me a hug, and he started laughing.
I like that article. I thought VP Biden and Pete Rouse’s answers to questions about the debt negotiations in 2011/12 were interesting. Biden was for a govt shut down and thinks it would have given them a stronger position and thinks maybe the Pres might would change his decision about it now. And Pete Rouse talks about the last deal going too far.
I’ve got a lot of respect for both of them but I disagree. I’m no expert so there’s that but with a govt shutdown I don’t think the Pres would’ve won re-election. The economy was getting better gradually and unemployment was ticking down a little bit at beg. of 2011 and dropped to 8.8 early on but then rose to 9 and over until Nov of 2011.The economy pretty much had stalled. I think it was due to uncertainly over debt talks. Had we defaulted on debt and had a shutdown of govt, unemployment would have gone through the roof, plus other bad things. Pres Obama would have been in an even weaker position going into re-election. And this group of Republicans wouldn’t have learned a thing. They would’ve kept refusing to compromise with the Pres. who would’ve gotten more of the blame.
Plus in 1995 and 96 when they shutdown the govt, the economy was much better. Unemployment was around 5.5ish for both years and the economy could withstand Newt’s foolishness, so yeah the Democrats were able to maintain a stronger position. I don’t know, maybe the Pres does agree with Biden now but frankly I think he made the right decision then and and Dec 2012. His instincts are really good IMO. His strategy gave him more time for the economy to improve and more leverage if he won re-election.
Plus, if he’d lost in Nov, taking a stand on that molehill would have looked pretty stupid….
All that being said, I think Biden and Rouse would make a good team in 2016 ( Pres and chief of staff) after the Pres has turned this ship of state around…towards a more progressive direction.
I agree, there are so many variables MB32, and one wrong move by the U.S. could have blown up the EU and vise versa. I just love the insider anecdotes all put together in one place and Rouse is never on the record!

Don’t leave out my guy Joe Biden. I remember some thought POTUS was making a mistake when he chose Biden as his VP candidate. I liked it from day one, and it has turn out to be a wise choice.
AMK, you may be right. But who knows when it comes to the unpredictability of humans? I certainly never expected to live long enough to witness the emergency of a dynamic President Obama.
That little nutty offspring of ex-Congressman Ron Paul is talking about POTUS trying to be a “King”. If only Senator Paul, if only. I wouldn’t mind King Obama and Queen Michelle Obama, and someday Princess Malia or Princess Sasha taking over. Just kidding, I guess???????????????
Remember what General Powell said Sunday on MTP about the Republican Party? I have been waiting for one Republican leader, Boehner or McConnell, Canter, McCain Graham, someone to step forward and say something about that disgusting NRA ad, but once again like before they have remain silent. Not one have step forward and said the President’s kids are off limits and to drag them into this is wrong. Let’s see if Chuck Todd and all the other weasels will go after them.
It was on MSNBC. I was watching Lawrence O’Donnell and a commercial was on and they were talking about Inauguration. You know since Boehner and McConnell refuses the President invitations when he invites them over to the White House, why don’t they refuse to show up to the Inauguration. And Dick Cheney was their the last time but I pray he won’t be there this time. What about G.W.? I heard the President invited turtle looking McConnell to the White House when the Kentucky Wildcats won the NCAA Championship. McConnell refused, but that’s okay. If Kentucky win it again in 2014, Senator Ashley Judd will be happy to come to the WH, she is a big fan of Kentucky basketball.
We’ve always called whine along with Mitch a turtle, but as an turtle lover, I’m going for chicken neck. I am a farm girl who had to pick eggs and I was scared to death of chickens pecking me. I would drop an egg and when it landed on a chicken, the others pecked it to death. Dirty filthy chickens. I was young when I started. (Cheap labor.) Fits R’s don’t you think? They don’t deserve the magnificent elephant. They deserve mockery. Pond scum, no that’s organic, good fertilizer, very useful. I’m an organic gardener! Repugnant cans fits for now.
Has anyone tweeted #davidgregoryNRA why he was in their ad about his children having secret service? Thought I’d get under his skin a little. Asked him why he was part of the news and not reporting news. No reply yet.

methinks there are many more juicy goodies embedded in the president’s checklist:
‘ In 1996, a Republican congressman from Arkansas named Jay Dickey pushed through an amendment stripping $2.6 million out of the budget for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. His measure was not about the budget deficit, though; Dickey’s aim was to force the CDC to stop researching the effects of gun violence. The centers’ annual appropriation still contains the language resulting from Dickey’s efforts 16 years ago: “None of the funds made available for injury prevention and control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may be used to advocate or promote gun control.?
~
Thankfully, the president’s proposed gun control package includes a call to “end the freeze on gun violence research.? That’s a worthy push against the anti-science impulse that has perverted not just the gun control discussion but the broader political debate as well.
~
If our country is to make smart decisions, surely suppressing science is the wrong way to go, yet the far right continues to insist on doing just that. President Obama’s call for gun violence research is an important stand against this war on science. ‘

‘ Is the Hastert Rule dead? Speaker Denny Hastert coined his eponymous rule in 2003 when he declared that the “job of the Speaker is not to expedite legislation that runs counter to the wishes of the majority of the majority.?
~
Some are calling last night’s House vote (extending fifty billion dollars for disaster relief in the wake of Hurricane Sandy) a harbinger of the Hastert Rule’s coming demise. That bill involved what we might call a Hastert Rule violation, a roll call vote on which a majority of the majority party votes against a bill, but it passes. On the vote to pass the Sandy relief bill, just 49 Republicans joined all but one Democrat to pass the bill. In the parlance of many legislative scholars, the majority party was “rolled,? a strict no-no for a leadership said to be guided by Hastert’s rule. Coming on the heels of the New Year’s Day fiscal cliff vote that passed with only 85 GOP votes, one might reasonably ask whether the days of the Hastert Rule are numbered. ‘
Hello susanne - I’ve only just managed to finish reading all of the TOD threads today - and it’s almost tomorrow. I had never heard of the “Hastert” rule until the fiscal cliff vote - it seems Speaker Boehner is under much pressure from somewhere to bring these items to the vote. As for those voting against the Sandy support - Christie doesn’t seem to be thanking the democrats for his money - because they are entirely the reason that he will get it - and use it to solve his budget issues.

Both Obama and Biden up in the polls. So is approval of gun control measures. is.gd/MtfCAy #GunsOverPeople— Suzanne Munshower (@expatina) January 17, 2025
As he prepares to pitch an expansive new package of gun restrictions to a bitterly divided Congress, Barack Obama has the majority of voters on his side. A new TIME/CNN/ORC poll that will be released Wednesday afternoon finds that 55% of Americans approve of the job Obama is doing as President, compared to 43% who disapprove.
That ratio mirrors the public appetite for tighter restrictions on guns, with 55% of respondents favoring stricter gun control laws and 44% opposed.
Obama’s approval rating, mired in the 40s for much of his first term, has improved in the wake of his re-election and an acrimonious fight over the fiscal cliff, jumping three percentage points from the 52% he registered in a December CNN/ORC poll. The new poll also shows that Vice President Joe Biden’s approval rating has spiked to 59%, up from 54% in December, amid high-profile turns negotiating the fiscal cliff deal and spearheading Obama’s firearms task force.
I email my Democratic Senator last night, I will email my Congressman today, I want to know if they support the common sense proposals President Obama put forth yesterday concerning guns. The other Senator and Congressmen are on the other side, but I think I will contact them too.

Sen. Mitch McConnell is the most influential Republican in America, a position he solidified earlier this month when he brokered a tax cut deal with Vice President Joe Biden to stop the nation from careening off the so-called “fiscal cliff.” But he’s hardly popular. With a state approval rating in the high-30s, the Senate minority leader, who hails from Kentucky, feels the heat from conservatives and liberals alike. Now, with almost two years until his 2014 reelection, the gang of activists eyeing McConnell is so diverse—from tea partiers and Ron Paul fanatics to Democrats and unions and campaign finance reformers—it might as well be a joke setup.
///
McConnell could be vulnerable. He commands enormous respect in Washington, but his popularity waxes and wanes back home. In 2008, he squeaked past Democrat Bruce Lunsford, the former treasurer of the state Democratic Party, by 6 points. A December survey by the left-leaning Public Policy Polling rated McConnell the least popular US senator, with 37 percent statewide approving of him and 55 percent disapproving. In a hypothetical matchup with the actress Ashley Judd, whose name has been floated as a Democratic challenger, a poll commissioned by McConnell’s campaign put him up by just 4 points. Of course, McConnell’s weak numbers are partly due to his visible role as a leader in Congress, which polls worse than colonoscopies, traffic jams, and Nickelback.

pbo looks great in that first picture- good to see him smiling. he’s been biting his lip way too much lately. probably biting his tongue, too. i sure wish he could have spent more time playing in the ocean in hawaii this year.
MY President! MINE!
Ahem.
quite.
age before beauty ; ^ )
He’s mine, then!
Pearls before swine… (age old middle school retort)
Oh Snap, Kat! Maryl’s calling you a pig, yo. Them’s fightin’ words!
Two sexy men.
Soooooo true!
Yes, MY President is sexy! Now stop looking at him like that.
I’m sorry Dudette. I look up, i looked down, I looked on his back and I looked at his front, yet nowhere did I see your name engraved on PBO’s sexy self. Methinks you might be a tad bit delusional. That man thar is ALL MINE!!!!
Well, of course YOU didn’t see it. That’s cuz it’s in a very private and special place, for my eyes only.
Ha!
Yep, LOVE them in navy blue. The best color for both of them.
amen!! Best looking A- Team to ever head the country.
Truth!!
All of us. Until they listen!! (BJ)

I saw that, amk. We need to BURN THOSE PHONE LINES DOWN!
All of mine are on board thankfully.
Hey, you did it! Congrats!
So dkos dahling dennis kucinich joins pox news.
Dennis who?
A perfect ‘anti-PBO’ match.
A BJ poster
And the firebagger teanut circle is now unbroken.
Genius!
Go figure! And Kucinich was one of those holier than thou, purity, progressives.
Amen!
I completely second that Annie…
Obamanos!! This is a good site to share ‘n’ like ‘n’ tweet ‘n’……………etc.!: https://dscc.org/stopNRA
Excellent, thank you Magapie
The little girl PBO spoke of today:
Okay team, show of hand please. Block this guy or no?

Flush him down the toilet, Dudette - scumbag.
Weird.I didn’t do anything before I left. I was planning to come back and respond to him once, then block him. But when I look at my Connects list, his tweets to me aren’t there anymore. Oh well, no need to seek him out. Navel lint holds more value to me than this troll. #FORWARD
He is a sick man, you engaging him is actually what he wants. Runs parallel to this sick person who is the biggest story in sports right now http://t.co/MdHWFLXQ mind boggling human beings can think in this manner.
It’s the most bizarre story LP, I don’t know what to make of it. He claims he was duped by a woman he only knew online, but there are a bunch of holes in that story too. I can only assume the guy isn’t entirely well, how did he think he would get away with it??
Can you believe it Chipsticks? I cant look away the ND athletic director just did a one hour press conference that rivaled Wayne La Pierre!
Whoa….this is just bizarre and disturbing.
Oprah Winfrey just ruined one of the biggest scoops of her lifetime by not releasing the Lance Armstrong video monday. No excuse she OWN’s here own network. did you hear/see this on the Ed Show tonight?
Washington, DC (January 15, 2025) – Today Rep. Jan Schakowsky, along with Rep. Henry Waxman and 43 House Members, introduced H.R. 261 the Public Option Deficit Reduction Act. This bill would offer the choice of a publicly-run health insurance plan, an option that would save more than $100 billion over 10 years.
Whoa.
Sign. Me. Up.
I HAVE to go to bed. Only got about 3 hours sleep last night and then got up to work all day, and tutor when I got done with work…shop, make dinner, clean up. I’m wiped. So proud of our President. So proud. We need to burn those phone lines up…he asked us and we always answer the call. I’l delirious now, so I’ll probably be bright eyed and bushy tailed at some God forsaken hour in the middle of the night because I have to go to bed so early…..Night all.
Night night desertflower. We don’t sleep so soundly here all night, so comment when you can. Wishing you rest and relaxation … just breathe and go to your “happy place.” It helps.

Beautiful, Mary.
wow that is so true
Sometimes it seems to me like President Obama is the very embodiment of everything that Dr. Kind stood for. Not just because he is the first black president, but because of how he thinks and act and the kind of person he is.
Thank you for posting this JoBoomer. I was wondering why there were so many retweets
Yes, TOD will do that for ya!
Heh blog tyrant.
Did you know? Wednesday 1-16-13: Six years ago today, then United States Senate member Barack Obama launched his successful bid for The White House.
Wow! Thank God for that day.
And what a journey it has been. There will be never again another Barack Hussein Obama. Never.
So true, amk, so true.HZ
Don’t leave out my guy Joe Biden. I remember some thought POTUS was making a mistake when he chose Biden as his VP candidate. I liked it from day one, and it has turn out to be a wise choice.
Compared to McCain choice, no comparing. None at all. No No no none.
Absolutely!!
AMK, you may be right. But who knows when it comes to the unpredictability of humans? I certainly never expected to live long enough to witness the emergency of a dynamic President Obama.
http://www.politicususa.com/republicans-call-dictator-obama-issued-fewest-executive-orders-100-years.html
The state of Kentucky must be cruse, to have Senator McConnell and Senator Rand Paul. How could one state have such bad luck.
I’m right with you on that one, anniebella
Just watching Chicago Fire and Rahm Emanuel had a tiny walk-on at the end!
Just unfathomable, isn’t it?
Just saw a commercial about the Inauguration coming Monday.
Where? Where?
Oh, I love that thought about Sen. Ashley Judd! Yes, she’ll be there with bells on.
Repugnant cans fits for now.
nitey nite TOD. Proud of our President! And VP Joe too! Man, they really do make a great team. OK-
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Sleep well, honey bunch!
Has anyone tweeted #davidgregoryNRA why he was in their ad about his children having secret service? Thought I’d get under his skin a little. Asked him why he was part of the news and not reporting news. No reply yet.
Fascinating article about the ratification of the 2nd Amendment and Slavery.

Very interesting; News of criticism by Obama of Netanyahu causes drop in poll #s for Netanyahu party in 1-22 Israeli election. @thenation
By John Nichols.
Israelis know that US support for the state is not just essential, it’s existential. Any PM who does not manage the US-Israel relationship well is not going to last.
Have you seen the FB page by the National Cathedral in D.C. where you can sign best wishes to the POTUS and VPOTUS? You can also add a prayer or good thoughts? I guess I should have gotten the name. I’ll be back.
Sorry TOD, I can’t find the link.
Here is the link for their Inauguration page. http://inauguration2013.nationalcathedral.org/wnc/inauguration/
Thanks.
I LOVE our President, I’m so proud to be an American at this time in History, and to have worked for over a year straight to make sure this Brilliant Man got back in office. Oh YES We Did!!
Thanks for all of your efforts! Yes. We. Did.
Bravo, roh, for your hard work in making sure President Obama was re-elected!
Well it’s pass my bedtime. Good night all.
Before I go, it’s January 17th…….HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MRS. MICHELLE OBAMA the best FIRST LADY.
that’s a good thought to carry you into sleep, anniebella! sweet dreams till tomorrow~
methinks there are many more juicy goodies embedded in the president’s checklist:

Wow, just saw this on MSNBC
Cool PSM.
Dennis McDonough to be named COS.
Is the news only going to ask why is he a Male and not a Female shit, all Day again?
Good…
Interestingly, Chris Matthews inauguration ad says we basically have to reform entitlements and attack Iran!
Is this the best ad that MSNBC could put out there for the inauguration?
Connecticuit Post posts op Ed by the President a few hours ago-

Of course, this is worth repeating over and over, it seems our lazy press is ignoring it.
Not ‘or’ … AND ….
Thank you Bob! My mouth hit the floor today when I heard the announcement about this farce.
an interesting read from the monkey cage:
http://themonkeycage.org/blog/2013/01/16/oh-113th-congress-hastert-rule-we-hardly-knew-ye/
As for those voting against the Sandy support - Christie doesn’t seem to be thanking the democrats for his money - because they are entirely the reason that he will get it - and use it to solve his budget issues.
aloha 99
it certainly was a long day of reading tod! so many great posts and rich comments. i first heard of the hastert ‘rule’ in the fiscal cliff vote, too- proving once again that i’m just a babe in the political woods.
i’m about to call it a night. hope somebody’s up to keep you company!
aloha oe~
Yup. Our side needs to scream just like the thugs do. The congress critters will listen only to the loudest.
Chris Christie wouldn’t know class if it smacked him in the face…
Well said amk - Gov Christie owes much to PBO and the democrats
///
Maybe there is hope for the people of Kentucky yet. 2014 kick the racists turtle out.
You tell ‘em AMK!
If you read that pos piece, the writer was simply regurgitating these nutters’ delusions without any pushback from her.
Yet another proof that gop is now by lunatics.
A very ‘Good Morning’ to all TOD early birds and other non-avian villagers! It’s good to know that there’s always someone keeping the village lights on no matter what time you check in.

Good Morning vc.
The one place that never sleeps, other than NYC, is twitterland.
Sometimes knowing this is not such a good thing because instead of reading when I’m restless, as I did in the past, I now peek in and you are probably well aware that a ‘peek’ into TODville can last hours.
Anything new and exciting in your corner of T-ville?
Exciting from my corner, you ask.
Bought a rock for wifey unit for the silver jubilee coming up in exactly one week.

wimmin/smh
Well, ‘Congratulations to you and Wifey’ a week early! She’ll have something else to throw at you when next you step out of line.
Thanks vc. Always trust the wimmin to find practical uses for things.
Morning VC! Susanne and I often keep the lights on between 3:00 and 5:00 Eastern and sometimes have the good company of AMK
Are you in Hawaii too, Susan? I thought I had it figured out - two ‘n’s = Hawaii, one ‘n’ = a Caribbean island (Jamaica, I think, except I thought Jamaica was more or less on the same time as we are give or take an hour during DST.
Nope, I’m on East Coast…just an early to bed, early to rise woman!
Okay - will have to adjust my mental file.
Have a lovely day!
There you go. PBO is right on the button on this issue, which is basic common sense.

I watched some of the morning shows, and the NRA and by Proxy House Republicans, biggest complaint is that the President did not mention Gun control in the Campaign.
And a House Republucan said he is only trying to rally his Base because of the debt ceiling debate. Cynical much?
And of course, Soledad just wanted to be Friendly and did nothing to push back.
Everybody’s Friends, at least on Tv.
If true jovie141, it appears Soledad is getting weak, or maybe the BOSS call her into the office and had a talk with her. Lay off the Republicans, it doesn’t matter how crazy they sound. And by the way, who is the House Republicans going to debate about the debt ceiling, themselves because POTUS have already said he isn’t playing that game.
