The Uninsured Rate Falls To 8.6%. Thanks, President Obama

Sarah Frostenson: America’s Uninsured Rate Just Dropped To A New Low

Fewer Americans are uninsured than ever before, new federal data shows.Quarterly numbers from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) show that the uninsured rate fell to 8.6 percent during the first three months of 2016. That’s the lowest rate the government has on record.

States that opted to expand Medicaid coverage to include lower-income individuals have managed to cut their uninsured rate from 18.4 percent in 2013 to 9.2 percent in the first three months of 2016. The uninsured rate has fallen most dramatically for nonwhite adults since 2013. For Hispanic adults, the uninsured rate has been cut nearly in half, dropping from 40.6 percent in 2013 to 24.5 percent in 2016.

taking shots at the President…..while seeming to sing his praises…..

On the downside, Obama’s blunders in Syria, Iraq and Libya helped give rise to the Islamic State terror group in those nations and beyond. Like other recent presidents, he will leave his successor a much larger federal debt and virtually no progress on curbing the benefit programs that drive deficits. And, despite his 2008 campaign pledges, he wasn’t able to change the way Washington works or radically improve racial relations.

      ****************

tired of this meme about not being able to bring folks together when yu had a party and the press who had a policy of Obstruction….and to blame the President for Racism is a racist meme in itself…

naming him as the cause for the rise of ISIS in Libya…Syria…and Iraq…is just wrong…

The word meta - same in my world - the only way the media and the right wing want to reduce deficits is via “benefits” - like giving folks something to eat. There is another side to the equation - the continual non-stop moaning by the rich about taxes being too high - they are way to low - that is how you reduce the deficits

Main reasons for no show on Trump Tax (which the media forgets)
          1. He donates to no-one and nothing
          2. He pays little, if any tax

Anthony Bourdain is back, and President Obama is along for the ride. Here’s a first look at Season 8 of CNN’s Parts Unknown, which debuts September 25 at 8 p.m. EST/PST. As usual, Bourdain will be traveling off the beaten path, hanging with locals, and exploring the socio-economic conflicts of various locales along the way. But it’s a meal with President Obama that will likely be the season’s highlight.

That’s the case I mentioned previously. It appears that state regulators in TX had a solid case against Trump U, but was told to drop it…

Plus, Trump surrogates are trying to claim that NY is the only state that is pursuing this. But there is a lawsuit in San Diego.

      ========
“Former Texas official says he was told to drop Trump University probe”

      http://www.cbsnews.com/news/former-texas-official-says-he-was-told-to-drop-trump-university-probe/

      ——-
Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton moved to muzzle a former state regulator who says he was ordered in 2010 to drop a fraud investigation into Trump University for political reasons.

Paxton’s office issued a cease and desist letter to former Deputy Chief of Consumer Protection John Owens after he made public copies of a 14-page internal summary of the state’s case against Donald Trump for scamming millions from students of his now-defunct real estate seminar.

Owens, now retired, said his team had built a solid case against the now-presumptive Republican presidential nominee, but was told to drop it after Trump’s company agreed to cease operations in Texas.

Trump University is the target of two lawsuits in San Diego and one in New York that accuse the business of fleecing students with unfulfilled promises to teach secrets of success in real estate.

No doubt. I wonder if charges will be filed against any of these AG’s. I suspect, that except for that slap-on-the-hand fine, Trump will get off scott free, even if they are convicted.

I think there should also be investigations regarding the taxes that were “forgiven” that were owed to NJ. Someone (Christie) benefited from that transaction and it wasn’t the citizens of NJ.

AND the media needs to talk more about the money Trump is making from this campaign.

In a classic case of the pot calling the kettle black, Donald Trump called Hillary Clinton “trigger-happy and very unstable.” Fox News reports he then declared that as soon as he takes office, he’ll order top generals to devise a plan for destroying ISIS within 30 days.

Calling the POTUS wannabe’s projected orders is overly-simplistic and “insulting” to those who’ve been on the ground fighting ISIS, Mark Hertling fumed:

***‘It shows a complete lack of understanding of the threat and the ways to fight it. It’s a sophomoric approach to elements of national security policy because if he’s just calling in the military, he’s missing the point that there are several other elements of national security that will help defeat ISIS’***

As for the 88 former military leaders who wrote a letter endorsing Donald Trump, they’re mostly Navy admirals who “weren’t actually in the fight” against Al Qaeda and ISIS.

One Answer to School Attendance: Washing Machines
When washers and dryers were added to 17 schools through a new program, attendance rates shot up.
    MIMI KIRK @marionekirk Aug 22, 2025

Dr. Melody Gunn, the former principal of Gibson Elementary in St. Louis, couldn’t figure out why student attendance was on the low side. All of Gibson’s kids were provided free or reduced lunches, and the school facilitated transportation.

In talking to parents, Gunn discovered that many didn’t have easy access to washing machines. Or if they did have machines, they couldn’t always use them because they couldn’t afford detergent, or their electricity had been shut off. For these families, laundry had to take a backseat to more pressing needs such as food and rent.

It turned out that when students didn’t have clean clothes, they often stayed home from school out of embarrassment. Logan, an eighth-grader, spoke about how difficult it is for others to understand his problem: “I think people don’t talk about not having clean clothes because it makes you want to cry or go home or run away or something. It doesn’t feel good.”

Gunn reached out to the Whirlpool company to see if it could help, and it donated a washer and dryer to her school. She then invited students who had missed more than 10 days of school to bring in their clothes for laundering. Whirlpool later gave 16 more schools in districts in St. Louis and Fairfield, California, washers and dryers through a new program.

“After just one month, we saw an impact,” Gunn tells CityLab. The more long-term results of the program have actually been remarkable. The first year saw over 90 percent of tracked students increase their attendance, with those most in need of the service averaging an increase of almost 2 weeks. Teachers surveyed reported that 95 percent of participants showed more motivation in class and were more apt to participate in extra-curricular activities. The results support research demonstrating that chronic absenteeism isn’t because of kids’ lack of smarts or .

Today I finally saw Southside with You and it was wonderful! Tika Sumpter totally nailed Michelle Obama’s voice and inflections. It was subtle but spot-on. The soundtrack is epic! I mean, “Close the Door” by Teddy Pendergrass! The theme song “Start” is beautiful. I didn’t recognize John Legend’s voice! I love how they featured Ernie Barnes’ artwork and how PBO spoke about it in the museum scene. Good Times was how I discovered his artwork too (even though I was a just little girl when the show was on, I always appreciated painters and artists).

I got all choked up all through the film.

      • 107 purpleshoesla
        September 7, 2025 at 10:56 pm

I’m going to offer up a different perspective. I was one of the TODers that saw it when the movie opened two weeks ago.

Having seen it, I can say without hesitation that Southside with You is not about “The First Lady” and “President Obama”. Nor is the story an attempt to portray them as “President Obama and the First Lady”. The actors aren’t mimicing them, doing impressions or engaging in superficial caricatures. It is a very sweet, well written, well acted story about Barack Obama and Michelle Robinson, the human beings; a slice of life/burgeoning love story;how they first met up. It is a story that also provides a glimpse into their integrity and character that ultimately has served them well in who they are today.

In my opinion, it was and is refreshing to see up on the big screen a contemporary take about black life and black love between two people who much much later, well after this movie ends; ended up becoming POTUS and FLOTUS. We African Americans have more stories to tell then historical narratives about the brutality of slavery, and the struggles “in the hood”. While those stories are still important to tell, Hollywood’s myopic focus in predominantly greenlighting movies about slavery back in the 1800s and its present day incantation in the hood continues to perpetuate racial stereotypes about us as a people that actually having an African American President and First Lady in the White House doesn’t even begin to counteract.

I saw it a second time over the Labor Day Holiday and brought family members and friends with me. I enjoyed it just as much the second time around for the reasons I stated above but also because I want to support ALL of our stories AND let Hollywood know that others stories about black life, if well made, means the color of green to them which in turn I’m hoping will “broaden their horizons” in bringing our stories to the big screen.

I’ll get off my soapbox now. 😆

PSLA, you’ve captured precisely the reason I enjoyed the movie and yes, it is vitally important that the dollar speaks to the movie studios that black films are being supported.
The movie is about two young adults who meet and fall in love. Their future is unknown, but you feel they will make a difference in the society.
We should support movies like this and not discourage anyone with personal opinion without seeing it first.

          Purple Shoes and GGail,
This, all this. I felt the same way watching. Not only a lovely slice of life love story, but also a peek into black perspectives that people who are outside of the community or who have no real relationships within it don’t hear about or see. For instance, when Barack and Michelle go to see “Do the Right Thing”. Lots of white people saw that movie in art movie houses with only other white people. This movie showed how it was viewed by a black audience. I also thought when Michelle spoke about the challenges of being a woman in a corporate environment were enlightening.

The theater I saw the film in today had some people in it that (I’m, admittedly, guessing by appearances here) probably had never set foot in a black home. This movie was the kind of slice of life, relationship movie that they have probably seen many times, but not with black lead characters. If it had not been about POTUS and FLOTUS, they probably wouldn’t have bought a ticket. I’m glad they got a chance to see this, and I hope this movie makes a boatload for the producers so more films like this get made w/o being pitched as only for a black audience.

I agree that we have more stories to tell..and that love stories like this do not often make the theaters…but the truth of the matter is that it is Because this is a movie about their much talked about first date that there is even interest in seeing the movie…This is not a movie about an anonymous couple..

The main reason I feel nervous is because I remember the ABC Debate in 2008. When the questioning and degree of the attack questions as well as time allowed to reply were controlled by the moderator. The control can affect the outcome and persuade the audience.
