Steve Benen: ….. “It’s safe to say Speaker John Boehner does not agree with President Obama’s suggestion on Tuesday that Americans are better off now than they were when he took office. “Are you kidding me?!” Boehner said loudly in response to a reporter’s question on the comment.”

…. Obviously, national conditions aren’t close to where they need to be. …. Maybe, if guys like Boehner would start passing jobs bills and stop holding the economy back on purpose, the public would start to feel like the country is on the right track again.

But for those who take reality seriously, there’s no real question as to whether the country is better off now than in January 2009:

Then the nation was hemorrhaging jobs; now it’s gaining jobs.

Then the economy was shrinking; now the economy is growing.

Then the American automotive industry was on the verge of collapse; now it’s starting to thrive.

Then taxpayers were sending money to Wall Street; now taxpayers are being paid back.

Then Osama bin Laden was targeting Americans and our allies; now he’s dead and al Qaeda’s leadership has been decimated.

Then U.S. troops were headed into the Middle East in greater numbers; now they’re headed home with their heads held high.

Republicans, including John Boehner, drove the United States into a pretty deep ditch during the Bush/Cheney era, and conditions are still pretty ugly. That doesn’t change the simple fact that the nation is much stronger now than the day the president was inaugurated ….

The GOP’s racial confusion:

The Week

AP: A third former employee considered filing a workplace complaint against Herman Cain over what she deemed aggressive and unwanted behavior when she and Cain, now a Republican presidential candidate, worked together during the late 1990s, the woman told The Associated Press on Wednesday. She said the behavior included a private invitation to his corporate apartment.

The woman said he made sexually suggestive remarks or gestures about the same time that two co-workers had settled separate harassment complaints against Cain, who was then the head of the National Restaurant Association.

Washington Post: Car buyers were out in force in October, snapping up trucks and SUVs and taking advantage of deals on Japanese cars.

U.S. car and truck sales were expected to top 1 million in October, a surprising number for a month when sales are usually slow. When adjusted for seasonal factors, that would be the best pace since the Cash for Clunkers program in August 2009.

Mediaite: In a Quinnipiac poll taken Oct. 25-31, embattled GOP juggernaut Herman Cain continued to show amazing staying power …. (but) The real news from this poll, taken before most of the fallout from Politico‘s alleged sexual harassment expose, might be that some rays of sunshine are finally hitting President Obama.

….. President Obama gained six points on his approval rating … and is now beating all Republican challengers by margins of 5-16 points. The President has seen steady progress in the polls since rolling out his American Jobs Act in September, taking it on the road, and taking the fight to the Republicans who oppose it.

Elsewhere in the poll, Democrats opened up a lead on the generic House ballot, beating Republicans 42-36, after tying them at 39 in October.

AP: Michelle Obama has presented national arts and humanities awards to 12 community-based, after-school programs, including for at-risk kids.

The programs use dance, theater, writing, music, history and other art mediums to inspire teen moms and other young people and help them reach their potential. The first lady said at a White House ceremony Wednesday that the programs show that the arts are a lifeline - not a luxury - for many of these kids.

Most of the participants graduate from high school or earn a GED and go on to college.

The 2011 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards are presented on behalf of the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities in partnership with three national cultural agencies.

wrap-up

E.J. Dionne: “The tide of war is receding,” President Obama said today. He’s right to withdraw our troops from Iraq by the end of the year.

I am sure some longtime supporters of the war will criticize him for pulling out too quickly. But as Obama pointed out, we have been at war in Iraq for nine years. The situation there will never present a perfect time for withdrawal…

… It was appropriate that Obama made this announcement immediately in the wake of Moammar Gaddafi’s death. It’s worth noting that our intervention in Libya, which did not place U.S. forces on the ground, was not only successful but also left the United States far more popular among the Libyan people. Gaddafi would not have fallen without outside intervention, but he was ultimately brought down by the Libyans themselves. Is this not a far better model for democratization?

…. “The United States is moving forward from a position of strength,” Obama said today. The truth is we will be stronger for ending an intervention in Iraq that has cost us so much in lives, injuries and money. On this matter, at least, we really have “turned the page” that Obama spoke about so often in his campaign.

People with weak stomachs, don’t click the next two videos, they both feature Piers Morgan.

So, Morgan, talking about Cain’s 999 plan, tells Juan Williams that “I read a Wall St Journal Op-ed piece yesterday, very praiseworthy, by a big financial expert”.

Williams kindly points out the piece was written by the Reagan administration guy Arthur Laffer, one of the architects of, yes, the ….. 999 plan

So, “big financial expert” Laffer was praising his own plan in the “very praiseworthy” Wall St Journal Op-ed piece that so impressed Morgan.

How much is CNN paying this guy?

Andrew Sullivan: ….. if you’d told me in January 2009 that the banks would pay us back the entire bailout and then some, that the auto companies would actually turn around with government help and be a major engine of recovery, that there would be continuous job growth since 2009, however insufficient, after the worst demand collapse since the 1930s, that bin Laden would be dead, Egypt transitioning to democracy, al Qaeda all but decimated as a global threat, and civil rights for gays expanding more rapidly than at any time in history … well I would be expecting a triumphant re-election campaign.

But we are where we are - and the economic pain is real and the president must take his lumps. The good news for those of us who still back Obama and hope for his re-election is that even with all this positive record essentially dismissed and little of it capitalized on politically, Obama is still neck and neck with any likely opponent. And he is his own best messager.

At some point, he needs to shuck off the restraint, and tell the actual story of the last three years - against the fantastic and self-serving lies and delusions we keep hearing in Republican debates and Beltway chatter. If he does it with panache, he won’t need a jumpsuit onto an aircraft carrier. And many of his missions may even be accomplished.

oh rachel……..

So, Rachel Maddow says the President has achieved nothing legislatively?

Well, someone disagrees with you, Rachel….

****

By the way, in the video above she, rightly, describes the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act as “historic” …. “a bill that had languished in Congress for years, the start of much more legislative achievement to come”.

But this is what her Firebagger buddy and former hard right Republican Cenk Uygur had to say about it:

More here

How progressive of him!

I’d guess if it was a (current) Republican, rather than a firebagger fraud like Uygur, who sneeringly described legislation aimed at guaranteeing equal play for women as “minor”, Rachel would have called him out on it….

Oh well.

a word from tally: all hands on deck

GET READY

Morpheus: You take the blue pill and the story ends. You wake in your bed and you believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill and you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.

The rabbit hole in question is not only deep, but very well funded, with lots of side warrens filled with vermin. However, they have one goal. Defeat Obama, regain power, and repeal everything he has done since day one.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY.

What President Obama has done to cause the Kochs & their monied interests….. consternation:

This list is VERY long, and can be found in it’s entirety here: Obama Achievements

You really should take the time to go look at the entire list. Careful - there’s a lot to fit into your brain.

How about just one section - Banking and Financial Reform - there are reference links for proof to everything.

Sure the GOP is the party of NO, blocking Democratic-written Jobs Bills in the House, and since Jan 1st, of this year, the GOPNO Congress has only approved 50 out of President Obama’s 259 nominations for government and judicial appointments (see here)

Today, the new meme is it’s the DEMS are blocking GOP “Jobs Bills”, but if you read the list, they are all ending regulations and safety that are in place in the nonsensical theory that such action will create jobs. Of course, the GOPMEDIA won’t discuss in any way that the Democrats are fighting to keep jobs HERE in this country, make sure there are safety standards so people don’t get hurt, make sure your water stays clean, or that it’s not okay to do more damage to The Gulf of Mexico (see here)

Bottom line: President Obama’s policies may be great for the greater population of planet Earth, but they are not good for the personally lined pockets of the überwealthy.

Today, the big story by “several overnight accounts”, is that President Obama will propose a $300 billion jobs bill in his speech tomorrow, followed by countless comments of how small that is, how much Obama has “caved” again, etc….

First of all, WHO gave these “accounts?” And do they have a time machine to the future? After listening to Jay Carney’s presser today I think it’s clear that The White House hasn’t released a copy of the speech to anyone, so it seems to me if the GOP and their Corporate masters can keep as many people from watching the President’s speech tomorrow night, and keep reinforcing how “weak” the POTUS is… that people will buy into the legitimacy of the certifiably insane candidates they want in office that they can control.

It’s imperative that we all watch the POTUS’ speech tomorrow, and get as many people as possible to do also. President Obama once again WILL CALL ON EVERYONE TO CONTACT CONGRESS to put the interests of the COUNTRY and the PEOPLE ahead of PARTY, which we know the GOP has no interest in doing. But who cares? It’s up to US to once again crash the DC servers, clog the DC switchboards, overwhelm all of our representatives by tweeting (stop asking people to tweet for you, THEY’RE BUSY. It’s time you got an account. Our POTUS NEEDS YOU, calling, emailing, and faxing out faces off. We also need to CONTACT THE PRESS. Every channel, every Newspaper, and all their websites. There is a link at the top of this blog (here)

And after the speech I also strongly suggest a MONEY BOMB for Obama 2012 (here)

The time is NOW. Get ready! ALL HANDS ON DECK.

a word from tally: dearest PL/EmoProgs everywhere

Dearest PL/EmoProgs everywhere…..

President Obama is just like the GOP??
uhm yeah… because…. Republicans are all for:

- Lifting the ban on stem cell research

- Ending DADT

- the ACA (which will lead to the end of for-profit health care and usher in Single Payer when the Non-Profits come online in 2014 IF WE DON’T FUCK IT UP AND ALLOW MORE GOP INTO OFFICE.)

- START Treaty

- NOT Privatizing Social Security, Medicare, & Medicade

- Ending the Bush tax cuts

- Creating infrastructure jobs - IN AMERICA

- Cutting defense spending with the Weapons Systems Acquisition Reform Act

- Trying to close GITMO (even though only 6 dems voted to close it)

- Credit Card Bill of Rights

- $4.6 Billion to the VA

- More funding for Violence Against Women Act

- Beginning the lift on the Cuba embargo

- Getting banks out of the college loan business

- 10% more funding for National Parks (til the GOP killed it and insisted on Program [aka JOB] cuts)

- Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act

- Creating the nation’s first Chief Technology Officer

- Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

- Financial Reform Law

- Closing the Medicare D gap

- More funding for Individuals With Disabilities Education Act

- Extending Benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees

- Appointing more openly gay officials than any POTUS

- American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (which we now need on steroids)

- Creating more private sector jobs in 2010 (IN THE USA) than during entire Bush years

- First Latina on the SCOTUS

- Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (FDA regulation of Tobacco - you mean it wasn’t before??? WTF???)

- Increasing average fuel economy standards

- Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act

- Getting families to DOVER

- recovery.gov

- Children’s Health Insurance Reauthorization Act

- Killed Bin Laden (instead of making deals with him)

- Taking down Gaddafi (instead of making deals with him)

There’s more, but there are only so many hours in a day, and I’ve got other things to DO.

And all in the face of RECORD OBSTRUCTION & FILIBUSTERING because ****WE FAILED**** TO SEND A PROGRESSIVE ARMY to DC to STAND BY THE POTUS, and HAVE HIS BACK.

Of course, everything above AND MORE will be overturned the second that President Perry or Bachmann gets into office, INCLUDING AT LEAST THREE MORE SCOTUS APPOINTMENTS - but by all means, stay home and whine 24/7 about how Obama isn’t President Superfly, because GETTING MAD worked for GHANDI, MLK, and NELSON MANDELA. NONE of whom were President of the United States, weren’t faced with a dishonest media, a certifiably insane opposition who complain when their children are taught science instead of creationism, and e-voting fraud on an epic scale.

Now if we could only be like Canada and outlaw newscasters lying.

‘stop whining about what obama hasn’t said. look at what he’s actually done’

President Obama tours Johnson Controls Inc. in Holland, Mich., Aug. 11

Michael Grunwald (Time): I know President Obama is supposed to be an awful disappointment to environmentalists because he doesn’t talk enough about climate change, just like he’s an awful disappointment to progressives because he doesn’t say enough nasty things about bankers. But people who actually care about what Presidents do, as opposed to how they talk, might be interested in Obama’s trip to Michigan on Thursday. He’s visiting a factory that builds batteries for electric vehicles, a factory that exists for three reasons:

1. Because Obama saved the U.S. auto industry.

2. Because Obama has ratcheted up fuel-efficiency standards, boosting demand for green vehicles.

3. Because Obama created a U.S. advanced battery industry from scratch.

…. the Johnson Controls lithium-ion battery factory that Obama is visiting was financed by his 2009 stimulus bill …. that included an unprecedented $90 billion for clean-energy investments …. The most radical investment was probably a $2.4 billion grant program that helped finance 30 factories building advanced batteries and components, including $300 million for Johnson Controls, which had to match the government dollars with private dollars.

Before 2009, the U.S. was supplying less than 2% of a tiny global market in advanced batteries. When the stimulus-funded factories are all complete, they’ll have the capacity to supply 40% of a rapidly growing global market, about 500,000 batteries a year.

The stimulus will also boost our supply of electric-vehicle charging stations by more than 3,000%. And the Obama administration has provided loans to help Tesla, Fisker and Nissan build electric-car factories in the U.S., all part of Obama’s pledge to put 1 million plug-ins on the road by 2015.

That is what change looks like, even if the President doesn’t beat his chest and call for mass beheadings on Wall Street while it happens.

… the liberals who keep whining that Obama isn’t telling them what they want to hear ought to open their eyes and look at what he’s trying to do. Whining enviros should be especially grateful to Obama …. those standards represent the biggest step the country has ever taken to reduce our dependence on foreign oil … the biggest step the country has ever taken to reduce our carbon emissions.

….. would you rather have a President who talks about climate change, or a President who does something about it?

‘who is washington’s most effective politician?’

Here are the political accomplishments: defeating the most heavily favored party machine in decades (the Clintons) while actually bringing his biggest rival into his cabinet, where she has performed extraordinarily well; helping to cement the GOP’s broad identity as extremists opposed to compromise; entrenching black and Hispanic loyalty to his party; retaining solid favorables and not-too-shabby approval ratings during the worst recession since the 1930s. 44 percent of the country still (rightly) blame Bush for this mess, only 15 percent blame Obama.

On policy: ending the US torture regime; prevention of a second Great Depression; enacting universal healthcare; taking the first serious steps toward reining in healthcare costs; two new female Supreme Court Justices; ending the gay ban in the military; ending the Iraq war; justifying his Afghan Surge by killing bin Laden and now disentangling with face saved; firming up alliances with India, Indonesia and Japan as counter-weights to China; bailing out the banks and auto companies without massive losses (and surging GM profits); advancing (slowly) balanced debt reduction without drastic cuts during the recession; and financial re-regulation.

…. When I read commentaries expounding on the notion that this man is completely out of his depth, I just have to scratch my head. Given his inheritance, this has been the most substantive first term since Ronald Reagan’s. And given Obama’s long-game mentality, that is setting us up for a hell of a second one.

ah yes, choi….

November 2010:

EqualityGiving.org: In its first 25 months, the Obama Administration…

Signed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which expanded existing United States federal hate crime law to include crimes motivated by a victim’s actual or perceived gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability - the first positive federal LGBT legislation in the nation’s history

Signed repeal of Don’t Ask/Don’t Tell

Signed the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Extension Act

Reversed an inexcusable US position by signing the UN Declaration on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity

Extended benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees in 2009 and, further, in 2010

Lifted the HIV Entry Ban effective January 2010

Issued diplomatic passports, and provided other benefits, to the partners of same-sex foreign service employees

Committed to ensuring that federal housing programs are open to all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity

Banned job discrimination based on gender identity throughout the Federal government (the nation’s largest employer)

Eliminated the discriminatory Census Bureau policy that kept gay relationships from being counted

Instructed HHS to require any hospital receiving Medicare or Medicaid funds (virtually all hospitals) to allow LGBT visitation rights

Required all grant applicants seeking HUD funding to comply with state and local anti-discrimination laws that protect LGBT individuals

Adopted transgender recommendations on the issuance of gender-appropriate passports that will ease barriers to safe travel and that will provide government-issued ID that avoids involuntary “outing” in situations requiring ID, like hiring, where a gender-appropriate driver’s license or birth certificate is not available

Extended domestic violence protections to LGBT victims

Extended the Family and Medical Leave Act to cover employees taking unpaid leave to care for the children of same-sex partners

Issued guidance specifically to assist LGBT tenants denied housing on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity

Cut back authority to discharge under Don’t Ask/Don’t Tell from hundreds of generals to just 6 civilian appointees, effectively ending discharges while working toward a permanent end to the policy.

Launched the first-ever national study of discrimination against members of the LGBT community in the rental and sale of housing

Determined that Section 3 of DOMA is unconstitutional, that discrimination against LGBT citizens should be subject to “heightened scrutiny” and that it will no longer defend this portion of the law in court.

Vacated a court order that would have deported a gay American’s Venezuelan partner

Endorsed the Baldwin-Lieberman bill, The Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act of 2009, to provide FULL partnership benefits to federal employees

Released the first Presidential PRIDE proclamations since 2000

Hosted the first LGBT Pride Month Celebration in White House history

Appointed the first ever transgender DNC member

Testified in favor of ENDA, the first time any official of any administration has testified in the Senate on ENDA

Hired more openly LGBT officials in its first two years - more than 150, including more than 20 “Senate-confirmables” - than any previous administration hired in four years or eight

Named open transgender appointees (the first President ever to do so)

Emphasized LGBT inclusion in everything from the President’s historic NAACP address (“The pain of discrimination is still felt in America. By African American women paid less for doing the same work as colleagues of a different color and a different gender …. By our gay brothers and sisters, still taunted, still attacked, still denied their rights.”) … to the first paragraph of his Family Day proclamation (“Whether children are raised by two parents, a single parent, grandparents, a same-sex couple, or a guardian, families encourage us to do our best and enable us to accomplish great things”) and his Mothers Day proclamation (“Nurturing families come in many forms, and children may be raised by two parents, a single mother, two mothers, a step-mom, a grandmother, or a guardian. Mother’s Day gives us an opportunity to celebrate these extraordinary caretakers”)

Spoke out against discrimination at the National Prayer Breakfast (“We may disagree about gay marriage, but surely we can agree that it is unconscionable to target gays and lesbians for who they are - whether it’s here in the United States or, as Hillary mentioned, more extremely in odious laws that are being proposed most recently in Uganda.”)

Dispatched the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to call on the Senate to repeal Don’t Ask / Don’t Tell

Publicly invited the shunned Mississippi high school prom student to the White House

Successfully fought for UN accreditation of IGLHRC (the International Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission) - against Republican attempts to block it

Awarded $13.3 million to the LA Gay & Lesbian Center to create a model program for LGBTQ youth in the foster care system

Hosted first-ever White House transgender policy meeting

If you’ve had the misfortune to visit PL sites recently you’ll have seen how much the ‘Obama-is-a-Homophobe!’ crew hate “the list” (as they call it) because …. um ….. dunno ….. maybe because it just proves they’re a bunch of lying turds? Or maybe they just think a McCain/Palin administration would have done so, so much more for LGBT rights?

*****

Wouldn’t it be nice if Dan was honest? eg “Sorry guys, I have no choice but to ignore the facts and continue labeling Obama as a homophobe who is the worst President in American history when it comes to LGBT equality - despite his record being pretty remarkable - because if I did I wouldn’t be a professional left hero any more and my media invitations would dry up. Hey, gotta stay in that spotlight!”

****

But hey, he’s a ‘progressive’!

November 2010 - C.D. Kirven (co-founder of Get Equal Now): An appeal to Dan Choi: Stop the gender baiting - Dear Dan: As a member of the LGBT community fighting against bigotry, I understand the depth of your passion….

….A large number of those targeted by the policy (DADT) are women. In 2009, women made up 14 percent of the Army, but accounted for up to 48 percent of DADT’s discharges.

Your comment after the failed DADT vote in the Senate last month - “Harry Reid is a pussy. … He’ll be bleeding once a month” - is almost too insulting to take seriously….

…. I’m a woman before anything else, so I refuse to tolerate anyone publicly demeaning women. Personally, I’m very hurt and disappointed in you as a leader. This truly breaks my heart.

Unfortunately, this type of misogynistic behavior is nothing new in the LGBT community …You should lead our community by opposing gender baiting and understanding that those kinds of comments are unacceptable.

…As efforts to improve race relations within the LGBT community are almost non-existent, and as sexism slowly leaves the shadows, you as a leader will hopefully seize the opportunity to unify us instead of dividing us along gender lines.

My plea will most likely go unanswered because I’m a middle-class lesbian of color who can’t afford to pay to play….
