I wish we could declare 9/11 a Day of Remembrance which would allow everyone to participate in events around the country or view them or participate on social media. I stay home on 9/11 because to me it is such a sad and hard day for so many families. I just need to be there with them even if only virtually.

This day always makes me at once too numb to feel any particular emotion because there are so many all mixed up; however, the one thing that has been able to come through since 2012 was overwhelming gratitude toward PBO for his leadership in bringing the author of our misery to his final justice.

Tom Ridge has selective amnesia or dementia.

He just went on and on about how PBO ” should have ” responded after the Jim Foley beheading. He has forgotten that 5 Americans were beheaded under his and Bush’s watch. One in Saudi Arabia during Bush’s love affair with the Saudi King. I don’t recall either Ridge or Bush condemning that.

He also wants to know why PBO did not get the Arab countries on board in this.

    September 11, 2014 at 12:33 pm

As i read through a lot of reaction to PBO’s speech last night, there are three things that continue to jump out at me.

    1. The generally universal (meaning I seldom hear the counter-argument) that he should go to Congress for authorization of any actual military involvement (including air strikes). I actually do not have a problem with this. One of four things will happen. He will get it pretty easily (which I think is the most likely). Congress will refuse to give him any authorization. (Unlikely, considering the mood of the country). He will get authorization but with some limitations, such as insertion of combat troops on the ground whose primary purpose would be engaging directly with ISIL. (Possible and something I wouldn’t have a problem with. Or, finally, Congress will punt and not do anything before they recess (which gives PBO an open hand).
I actually would like to see him go to Congress. Make them bear some of the responsibility for what is going on.

    2. The whole concept of threat or non-threat of ISIL. Those against us doing anything state ISIL is not a threat to the USA. Those demanding more action say ISIL is an extreme threat. I think one of the important things that PBO did with his speech last night was attempt to put the threat from ISIL into perspective. Despite what McCain and the go all in crwod say, ISIL is not an EXISTENTIAL threat to us. Neither was al Qaeda. ISIL cannot overtake this country and start turnign us into part of a caliphate. Could they do something? Of course, but it does not make them that severe of a threat.
On the other hand, ISIL is still a threat, despite what the naysayers are saying. They think only in terms of existential threat and that is the only thing that we should respond to. However, from all kinds of viewpoints, economic to politcial and everywhere in between, ISIL does represent a threat, a threat which could only become bigger if not taken care of now. ISIL is like the spot on the lung. A cancer which as it exists right now is a nuisance and concerning but because I am still able to breathe I don’t think I need to do anything about. et as it grows, it becomes more of a threat.
The point is, although ISIL will never represent an existential threat t us, the consequences of its growing and totally messing up the ME can lead to situations which can become at a minimum clsoe to an existential threat.

    3. A final common thread in much of what I have been reading is that thank goodness it is PBO in charge of this, but that this is unlikely to end prior to his leaving office and what about whoever follows him. There is a lot of concern that, say, Hillary would up the ante considerably. Specially true if he doesn;t get Congressional approval. I have a great deal of agreement with this position.

As Bob likes to say Trust PBO. And I do. I don’t necessarily trust that whoever comes next will show the same wisdom and restraint.

    • 67 Jeff
      September 11, 2014 at 12:36 pm

I think that PBO is reluctant to have any troops on the ground, something that Congress possibly wants. Also there are many that are outright reluctant to do anything at all because of election time.

      • 70 japa21
        September 11, 2014 at 12:52 pm

I’m not, which is why I would be okay with a limited authorization restricting that type of activity. I probably could have phrased that better (which is normal for me). In other words, they may approve air strikes, taring support, etc., butlimiting his ability to put combat troops directly into intended combat situations.

      September 11, 2014 at 1:05 pm

The President’s speech was brilliant. You have to read it several times to understand exactly what he was saying. First, he described the strategy as a counter-terrorism strategy, which means he does not need congressional approval to conduct such activities. He said the operation will not be a combat mission but it does not mean there will not be boots on the ground to facilitate and support the combat/ground mission of Iraq. Finally, PBO is gonna have to kill some American international terrorists, e.g. those individuals who have swore allegiance to ISIL and their agenda. We need to not become seduced by the PSYOPS pundits, like Maddow, Mathews, Hayes. Their goal is to market a certain point of view of this President, his agenda and in particular, his counter-terrorism strategy, which they are calling “war.” You can push back against PSYOPS media by referring to the President’s ISIL strategy as a COUNTER-TERRORISM strategy, which is what it is.

      • September 11, 2014 at 1:12 pm

Matthews wants all out war with details exactly of how .
Rachel , apparently is a Hippie and hears what she wants to hear. Cares not for America’s security but only for her delusional ideology.
Hayes is in competition with Rachel.
        That is all!

O/T: I saw a very informative and supportive program on C-SPAN this morning with Sen. Carl Levin (D) Michigan on Foreign Policy at the Council on Foreign Relations. Sen. Carl Levin is the Chair of the Armed Services Committee. He has had his moments with comments on the president’s policies, but he was so on point this morning.

He was very much informative and in total support of POB’s speech last evening. And he did not hold back on how Sen. McConnell got on the senate floor yesterday before the president and speak in such negative words. It is an excellent program.HZ

Third image of the President, First Lady, and Vice President = sobering and yet it shows how Americans can come together in adversity.

What’s different about this anniversary of 9/11 is that – although there is still terrorism running rampant around the globe, threatening to harm us here – our leader is no longer running the country with nothing but FEAR tactics. President Obama gives us all a sense of calm and reassurance, mostly because we know he’s in charge and has the wherewithal to keep us as safe as possible. It’s not a perfect environment, but I’ll take “as safe as possible” any day over fear-mongering.

When I was in elementary school back in the Cold War ’50s, we practiced getting under our desks in case the “dirty rotten commies” were dropping nuclear bombs on us … which was ludicrous, of course … and I still remember the FEAR, as though it were yesterday. We should not have to live being afraid of every movement of a twig branch in the backyard, not if we put our minds and resources into defending our borders and helping our allies defend theirs. Of course, all people around the globe have that same desire, not just Americans. We’re in it, together.

Her physical appearance, sad to say, was one of the BIG reasons she was such a hit among the old good ol’ boys and their good ol’ boy offspring.

“Putin likely retains his desire to annex the Donbas or have it become some kind of frozen conflict he can use against Kyiv. But Ukraine is not going to agree to that, and the West is going to support Kyiv. It is obvious, Portnikov says, that “in the Kremlin they do not know how to package all this in a more suitable way. And they are not going to find one.”

A major reason for that is “the basic Russian political trend is a dialogue of tsars. In the plans of the Kremlin, Putin must simply agree with Poroshenko as he agreed with Yanukovich. And if that does not happen, then he needs another tsar.” But that Moscow assumption fails to understand that this is not between two tsars but between a tsar and the Ukrainian nation.

The Ukrainian nation is not going to give way, Portnikov says, whatever pressure Putin brings on Poroshenko. Consequently, Putin will continue to maneuver “between the renewal of war and a deceptive peace, at least as long as he has the strength to do so – and during this time, the economic problems will build and the money for war and for buying loyal subordinates will become ever less.”

“Putin will burn himself out like a little old lamp,” the commentator says. “And our task along with the West” is to force Putin to maneuver in this way “forever, thereby depriving him of resources, the initiative, and the understanding of what is happening.” In the end, “he must burn himself out.””

So America is at a crossroads. We must define the nature and scope of this struggle, or else it will define us. We have to be mindful of James Madison’s warning that “No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.” Neither I, nor any President, can promise the total defeat of terror. We will never erase the evil that lies in the hearts of some human beings, nor stamp out every danger to our open society. But what we can do — what we must do — is dismantle networks that pose a direct danger to us, and make it less likely for new groups to gain a foothold, all the while maintaining the freedoms and ideals that we defend. And to define that strategy, we have to make decisions based not on fear, but on hard-earned wisdom.

Poignant ceremonies today in honor of those senselessly slaughtered while POTUS was reading My Pet Goat — a POTUS who continued reading a children’s story until the second tower was attacked.

Yet the media ignore this fact, and continue to harp on how the current President can do nothing right. Heard a Politico reporter on the local radio news station this morning — name wasn’t familiar to me — talk about how damaging it was for PBO to ask Congress to vote on Syria a year ago. I literally yelled at the radio in my car, ranting about “What about Congress!?!? — why are they covered with Teflon??? why does the MSM rarely (or perhaps never) mention that GOP are the ones forcing 60 votes — MSM acts like the 60 vote requirement was etched in the Constitution.

On a lighter note, CBS radio news has reported all day on this, with the lead-in: “Can two Senators from opposing parties work together on a desert island?”

The desert island in question is one of the Marshall Islands, halfway between Hawaii and Australia:
