Thankyou swbluega - the day was peaceful - we call today remembrance day - and have small services & 2 min silence at 11am. Our major day of thanks to the vets is 25 April - Anzac Day
Our Veterans deserve this day of honor; deserve to be honored EVERYDAY.
I remember you saying that your father had been stationed in Okinawa. [I had an uncle who had been stationed there as well.] Please thank your father for his service..
Morning. It’s good for all of us to remember what Veteran’s Day is about, especially those family and friends who served in any of the Armed Forces. But, I’m always dismayed at how little public recognition there is in many communities, aside from the ubiquitous “sales.” When there was universal conscription, virtually every family had someone who served in the military-even the rich and powerful. Now, not so much. Sacrifices and hardships go on among servicemen and women and their families, but except for the heroic efforts of our President, First Lady and VFLOTUS, there is very little visible attempt to reach out and say thank you, at least in many communities and cities. Lots of ads though.
Morning people:) Happy Veteran’s Day to all the veterans and their families…you have given so much to all of us…..my family included. All the men in my family, except one brother, served in the military. I thank them all and all the millions of others that have chosen to serve.
Like I said yesterday….PSA’s on how the local and federal government works until folks get tired of seeing it. People say it’s on them to learn but they won’t unless we teach them. Yes this is pathetic but as I said its the reality.
Donna, do you think Anthony Brown’s fate on election day will change Martin O’Malley’s plans to run for president? I’ve been very concerned that the election would alter his plans.
I don’t think it will change his plans but I do believe that it was a blow to his aspirations. As I stated last week, Hogan gave the Republicans the playbook on how to go after MOM. Most people don’t want to pay anymore in taxes and AB was hurt badly in this election by MOM’s policies of raising taxes in this state. Only time will tell the true impact but as of now its been seen as a real setback for MOM.
Since apparently, a lot of Americans do not have a clue about what’s going on in the country — even at the highest of levels — then their perception of whether the country is going in the right direction is obviously coming from a flawed (faux news) source.
SW, as we learned in the last election, polls are absolutely meaningless. There was not one pollster who got any of the races right, so who knows what the majority of Americans think? Depends on who you ask, doesn’t it? Or, how much you pay to get the results you want.
In the past, my reaction to poll results has been, “No one asked me or anyone I know.” I also realize, more now than ever, that polls are set up to attain a specific result (as you said, based on who is paying for it), from the way the questions are worded to the mix of the demographics sampled.
Even with the video that desertflower shared up thread, I’m sure that there were a lot more students who were able to answer the historical/government related questions — probably the majority. But, the author wanted to make a point and edited her results to support that point.
I think because most of us here are intelligent and seek the truth that we have a tendency to believe that most people follow that same path and the reality is that most people are ignorant about history and civics. I can poll 10 people in my office right now and I would get only a couple of them that would be able to tell me who their Representative in Congress is. They don’t know their local state and assembly members and most don’t know, if they have one, who their mayors are. Unfortunately, these are the hard cold realities :(:(:(
If all the news does is project negative aspects of our economy then the country will feel that things are not getting better. The good news rarely gets covered with the same enthusiasm as the negative news. The President and or the Dems are never allowed to win a news cycle. As an experiment spend today following this website and then tonight watch ABC, NBC and CBS evening network news and see just how they cover the moves of this President. If he does something positive it will be reported as a side note. Then its off to the races on something negative that is happening in the country.
Take for instance when we get good jobs numbers they will always report them with some caveat of how there are still too many people unemployed or underemployed. And if the stocks go up its never because of any of his policies therefore never giving him any credit for the improvement. Yet, the minute they have a negative poll to report on this is done breathlessly to reinforce what they want to project to the public which is that PBO, his policies and the Democrats are a failure.
Most people just like those kids in that video that DF posted are not eating and sleeping politics or history for that matter. They are too busy with whatever else is taking center stage in their lives. So what little bit they get tells them everything is bad so of course the public is going to feel that nothing is working…..
” If he does something positive it will be reported as a side note.”
You’re right, Donna. That’s *if *any positive news gets reported at all. Then it’s reported with a “but” so that whatever negative that follows overshadows the positive.
There used to be a time that current events was a routine part of the lesson plans, especially in Social Studies classes. Then, *accepted* current events were typically related to government, political, science/technology, citizenship, etc. It had to tie into the lesson or be relative to the subject class. Now, entertainment “news” is often accepted as a current event and that is what many young people submit to satisfy the assignment. I’ve even heard student say they look to programs like The Daily Show and the Colbert Report as their source for current events and political news.
Russians have had one disaster after another since Putin assumed his ‘dictatorship.’ They’ve been lied to, cheated, impoverished and now suffocated with polluted air. What will it take for them to figure out how disastrous this man’s leadership is? Or, maybe they’ve been lulled into a stupor like most Americans.
This is we why ordinary Americans don’t feel a difference in the economy…and the voted in the guys that think this is a wonderful thing…

I’ve heard others say, and have to agree, that Democrats need someone who can be devoted full time to the party’s needs and can steer it towards success. A good organizer/strategist is needed who is politically savvy and who has a good pulse on what is important to what considered the party’s base. DWS, holding a public office, could not have that dedicated focused. Anyone holding office would be torn between what is needed for the party and trying to satisfy the constituents in their area.
Who would be (a) good candidate(s) to take over at the helm of the DNC?
GM all. It’s Tuesday. After today, only three more work days.
And to all veterans out there, including but hardly limited to Yardarm, this is your day. Those of us here honor you, Potus and Flotus honor you. It is our duty to make sure you are recognized for what you have done on behalf of your country. I will not make this day into a political football, although I know some will.
My thanks And support to All vets inclidung my father in ław (WWII vet) and my dad whose birthday is today. He was a WWII vet and my hubby, a vet from the Borneo conflict. Thank you all for your service.
It’s a madhouse downtown today. My office does not close for Veterans Day (we get the day after Thanksgiving instead) so we have been told to be aware of the mess we will encounter down here today. My office is a mile and a half from the Capitol. The metro is a mess and they are expecting 800K people down here for this concert.
Carrie Underwood is one of the singers at the concert to honor Veterans, but just a few days ago last week, she was trashing our Commander-in-Chief at her CMA show. And she trashed the ACA that same show year before.
You don’t trash the Commander-In-Chief and his beneficial policies in one breath and claim to honor the military/Veterans in another. #FAIL
Yes they got tremendous push-back. Their concerts were boycotted, their CD sales plummeted, and they were forced to issue public apologies for “dissing a US President on foreign soil.” And there was no way you would find the Dixie Chicks trashing GWB and then publicly honoring veterans at a DC concert in the same 7-day period. There would have been massive nation-wide protests and calls for their removal from the guest list.
In the past, whether or not you liked who held the office of President/CIC, you still respected it. That was a part of being patriotic, right? When President Obama was *first* elected, never would I have imagined that the deference extended to previous Presidents would not have been extended to him. But the double standards, and the lack of respect is beyond belief.
I LOVE MY ENERGIZER BUNNY PRESIDENT…………………..P-R-E-S-S O-N!!!!!!!!————————————-MAY OUR MIGHTY GOD LIFT HIM IN STRENGTH AND MAY HE FEEL THE LOVE OF ALL OF US WHO STAND WITH HIM…THANK YOU AGAIN MR.PRESIDENT FOR VISITING NORMANDY THIS PAST YEAR…MY DAD LEFT HIS MIND THERE AND WITH YOUR VISIT…I WAS ABLE TO VISIT!
Good Tuesday, Chipsticks…TOD Family!

Proof positive that we are in some serious trouble here……..PBO is NOT the problem!

Dudette, most of the people who think the country is going the wrong direction are those right wing Obama haters.
And I don’t trust all Democrats either.
Great visual!
Happy Veterans Day, TOD~
Google is stepping up with jobs for veterans

G’morning Chips & TOD! Happy Veterans Day to all who’ve served this country, including our TOD veterans (e.g. Mr. Yardarm), and others :)
I don’t want to laugh, but I’m thinking about Karma paying a Putin a long-overdue visit…. Lets see the US media try to make this Obama’s Katrina….
Good Morning Chips and TOD.
Good Veterans Day to one and all. As a reminder, today is set aside to honor all surviving and current veterans, Memorial Day is to honor the fallen.
Toasts and fetes today are a good way to honor all who served and are now serving.
GM JER and TODville:
Also remembering all who served, but not just the ones on KP duty.
Good morning, Everyone :)
Good morning TOD on this Veterans Day. Thanks to all here who have served. We honor you!
This is we why ordinary Americans don’t feel a difference in the economy…and the voted in the guys that think this is a wonderful thing…
THIS ALWAYS BRINGS TEARS TO MY EYES BECAUSE ALLEGED AMERICANS ALWAYS FORGET THE RAINBOW COLORED SOLDIER AND IT BREAKS MY HEART….GOD WILL ANSWER THIS!
WOW…you learn something new everyday. I just stumbled upon an article which talks about mainstream words and phrases which were originally Black/African-American slang words/phrases.
Here are just a few that I didn’t know originated as Black slang.

6. Busted (arrested)

I didn’t know about “The Big Apple” but I would have guessed that all the rest originated as Black slang.
Yes. :)
Thanks for the info, HF2.
I wonder when mainstream America picked up on these phrases?
Except for MickeyD’s I’ve used all of them since I can remember.
This is where your donations went, because the POTUS is a “drag on the party”
http://www.buzzfeed.com/rubycramer/democratic-candidates-spent-at-least-700k-to-fly-in-clintons
OMG, this infuriates me beyond words.
Total waste of money, for nothing.
Honestly, I’m shaking I’m so angry. Just incredibly insulting and irresponsible on the part of everybody at the top of the DNC. UGH UGH UGH
Well, I only gave to my Rep here in GA. not one penny went to anyone else.
The only people that adore the Clinton’s work on cable news. Especially Tweety Bird.
This article really shows part of the problem with the Democrats in congress. They have clintonitis. I am so disgusted with them.
I’ve heard others say, and have to agree, that Democrats need someone who can be devoted full time to the party’s needs and can steer it towards success. Who would be (a) good candidate(s) to take over at the helm of the DNC?
David Plouffe !
That’s a thought. Wonder if DNC leadership would be smart enough to consider him or someone like him.
The web reverberates with the sound of money being flushed down the toilet on these two privileged ‘surrogates’ (ie - losers)
One of many reasons why I only donate to OFA and individual candidates ….
GM all. It’s Tuesday. After today, only three more work days.
