The President’s Day

CHINA-APEC

President Barack Obama speaks during the 22nd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting at the Yanqi Lake International Convention Center in Beijing. Asia-Pacific and world leaders gathered for the annual summit, with free trade at the top of the agenda as they sought to narrow differences on how to open commerce across the vast region.

Thank you Nerdy! Fantastic pictures of the hardest working elected official ever!

Some of you may find this of interest -it’s a long video but I found some time to watch it just now and it’s well worth it imho. The Supreme Court is bordering on treasonous, no?

I’ll add to NW’s thread title… “is just beginning”

as in: The President’s Day… is just beginning.

It’s a little before 9am in Beijing. I mentioned yesterday that Josh Ernest had a 5 o’clock shadow at the press briefing, which occurred during the morning hours in China. Think that means he hadn’t had a wink of sleep yesterday, and probably very little overnight. :(

And then it’s off to Burma…

    Such an exhausting schedule.

GOP back in charge (they think)—time to be patriotic again, I guess, as long as you exclude the source of 6 years of goodness for the USA—President Barack Obama.

Vickie, your comments over the past couple of days have me thinking of writing a post about what “honoring the troops” really should mean. Give me a couple of days to stew on it. What it should mean and what it means when GOPers say it are 2 different things separated by a chasm.

    Today, those numbers have changed:
Dow closed at 17,618 plus today…..another record high so did S&P 500.
    UR is today at 5.8%
    White is at 4.4%
    Black is at 10.9%
    Latino is at 6.5%

All off from record high in 2009.
    More folks are insured today.

Speaking of “honoring the troops” one of my colleagues told me this morning that 400,000 veterans of the Iraq/Afghanistan wars are requesting and waiting for mental health care. And yet, the repubs talk, but will appropriate no money. I have no use for them, and frankly, am not impressed with this concert tonight…..a good deal of the audience, I know, are redneck, neverserved wannabes. I have no use for them. These people in the concert have NO idea what it is to serve.
Talk, talk, and no action. I say this as the daughter of a veteran, the wife of a veteran and the mother of a veteran, who basically roll their eyes at these people.

    November 11, 2025 at 8:02 pm

my dad is a vietnam combat vet, and an extreme obama-bot (i send him links from here quite often). we spoke on the phone and he pointed out there were around 180,000 troops in afghan/iraq when president obama took over, and now what is it, under 10,000 total?!? he was wishing president obama could’ve been president and been able to do something like that for the vietnam war. talk about TRULY supporting the troops! he tries not to get cynical with concerts like this one tonight or when people say “thanks for your service” if they find out he was in vietnam, since he feels the best way to really support our military is to vote for democrats because they increase service member benefits and keep out of unnecessary “wars” for the most part. so proud of him!

        November 11, 2025 at 8:30 pm

ha! i will! he had a rough upbringing and then had all that happen, yet came back and held it together, and ended up being a good father to my siblings and i. he’s getting more radically liberal with age, yet still pragmatic too, so that’s been really nice for all of us.

That’s great to hear about your dad. My daughter (22) says that she hasn’t met one soldier, and she has met several both in AZ and in CA, that likes or appreciates PBO. They have all been Republicans (and these are mostly younger soldiers). I know her experience is not an accurate sample of what’s out there, but I have also heard the same thing from the wife of a Coast guard officer, who was my aide in my classroom for 5 years. She told me all her friends and fellow military people hated Obama, though she didn’t hate him, she didn’t vote for him in either 2008 or 2012. I really am uplifted when someone like your dad gets it right.

This dislike is partly because FOX is played on bases…..they are poisoned against their own leader. They should read the message from the veteran on the previous thread about NEVER voting for a Republican. That is the best I’ve seen.

So Only US is invited to this Summit/Economic Asia Gathering?
I had a heated argument in Aug of 2008 with a Russian……he argued that Russia is European. I said….Hell No. Russia is in Asia, as such, they were not Europeans…….Geographically speaking.

      ?
APEC = Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum

Russia has an enormous Pacific coastline.

In school I was taught that the Ural Mountains were the dividing line between Europe and Asia, so western Russia is part of Europe while the vast majority of their land (i.e., Siberia) is part of Asia.

Not the hugest fan, but I think if truth be known, she is very liberal. I know she reads what they write for her at the CMA’s —-but so does Brad Paisley who is done a lot of WH events. But she’s vegan, huge animal rights activist, spoke out in support of gay marriage, said she would only attend a church that does the same, interned with an Ok. Dem state rep.—-she found one in OK!, supports Habitat for Humanity and a lot of other causes on the left side of the spectrum.

On the Early Bird Chat this morning, Hopefruit and others mentioned that she was disrespecting PBO recently. I had heard the same from a musician friend awhile ago. Here’s Hopefruit’s comment from this a.m.:

“Carrie Underwood is one of the singers at the concert to honor Veterans, but just a few days ago last week, she was trashing our Commander-in-Chief at her CMA show. And she trashed the ACA that same show year before.

You don’t trash the Commander-In-Chief and his beneficial policies in one breath and claim to honor the military/Veterans in another. #FAIL”

    I love to see
    President Barack Obama,
    Who grew up among us,
    Travel to foreign shores
    To represent our country.
    He does not go looking
    How to do harm or
    How to get back at
    Or simplistically to find out
    Who’s “against” us.
    He goes in peace
    With a full inventory of
    Innovative ideas
    About how we can all
    Work together
    For a more productive world.
Isn’t it something we all want
I remember thinking as a child
I remember praying as a child
    That everybody in the world
    Could work together
    In the pursuit of happiness.
    Isn’t that what America
Is supposed to be all about?
    Not colonialism
    Not hatred
    Not putting up walls
Not forgetting to lend a hand.
If you’re poor, we’ll teach you to fish
If you’re sick, we’ll bring our medicine man
If you’re oppressed, we’ll help to
Bring your children back down from
    The mountain.
    I love to see
    President Barack Obama,
    Who grew up among us,
    Travel to foreign shores.
    Lands that never
    Seem as “foreign” to us
    (Do they?)
When he shines his light on them.
    That’s how to represent
    America the Beautiful
    And leave the “Ugly American”
    To other times
    To lesser people
    To someone else’s storybook.

Not usually a fan of short jokes (since I’m vertically challenged myself, don’t understand why it’s OK to ridicule people for their height, which they have no control over), but PBO’s expression is priceless.

MSM who jump on the bandwagon and claim PBO is “aloof,” or inscrutable haven’t taken the time to look at some of his expressions.

For instance, that one of Berlusconi and Michelle — or that one of Dominque Strauss-Kahn and Michelle, etc.

I tuned in to catch FLOTUS who was resplendent in a red dress and inspiring and then Bruce.

Bruce did 3 of his biggest eighties hits as dirges. “Born in the USA” sounded like a eulogy for a country that has truly lost its way.
His first selection was a sad muted “Promised Land” and his finale of “Dancing in the Dark” was the most mournful I’ve heard him do it.
Bruce can be counted on to accurately catch the zeitgeist.
No “Land of Hope and dreams” tonight. The Good guys lost last week. No pretending rah-rah can fix that.

And that Putin looks like a total nonentity next to him????

I know this not high priority here, but the Oregon Ducks football team are now #2 in the playoff rankings. They win the next two plus Pac-12 final and they’re in the national playoffs. Totally doable for them.

Bill! My friend’s son started at Oregon this year. I haven’t missed a game! LOVE Marcus Mariota! And did you see that amazing 100 yard touchdown in the Utah game! I feel sorry for that kid that celebrated early and lost the ball, but I’m glad Oregon won! :-)

        I didn’t hear about the rankings…. Yay! (ex-cheerleader here :-) )

My two cents: That “What’s happening?” thingie on Twitter is goofy looking. Giving me whiplash. I feel as though it’s an affront to a civil society. Ya know?

No two ways around it, propaganda won the day on Nov. 4. The constant negativity against PBO by the media would depress anyone who did not have an alternate source of info. Good news that could be attributed to the President was ignored or dismissed. The psychological effect this has on people cannot be denied, due to the fact that far too many people still look to the media for an unbiased reporting of “what is going on”. Hearing a news reader or pundit say something on television carries more weight than anything a politician says to the average American. The demise of the Fourth Estate could very well spell the end of our very imperfect experiment with democracy. Add to that the FACT that this is a profoundly racist country with a depressingly large segment of the population that can be manipulated into doing the 1%ers’ bidding merely by stoking racial fears and anxieties. The final, and perhaps fatal, blow has to be how difficult it is to maintain a political coalition party (Dems) in a country with as selfish and lazy a populace as the United States. I have no idea how this mess will play itself out. The South will never accept a Northern Democratic President (the last one was JFK and he was not popular in the South either). Perhaps if PBO were a Southern White man, his populist message would be able to get thru to the knuckle draggers. As it stands now, far too many on both the LEFT and Right only hear REPARATIONS when PBO speaks of how the rich are exploiting everyone else in this country. The MSM/GOP eagerly exploit this sad reality. PBO is the best President of my lifetime. The most honest, hard working, pragmatic and farsighted world leader of our time. This selfish, hateful, infantile and ungrateful country does not deserve a leader of PBO’s caliber.
