NYT: Justice Dept. Sets Record In Penalties For Fraud
The Justice Department collected a record $24.7 billion in penalties from fraud and other cases in the 2014 fiscal year, the agency said on Wednesday, as fines against banks for financial misconduct soared. Collections from civil and criminal actions, including money collected on behalf of other agencies, was $8 billion in 2013, and $13 billion in 2012. Collections in 2014 were bolstered by multibillion-dollar payouts from JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup to resolve claims they misled investors about the quality of mortgage bonds in the run-up to the financial crisis, and include $11 billion in payments made to federal agencies or states. Payouts in the 2014 fiscal year, which ended Sept. 30, also include hundreds of millions of dollars in fines levied on UBS and Royal Bank of Scotland.

Also heard on @knx1070 this afternoon that many Guantanamo prisoners are learning Spanish (can’t find on the Internet though), hoping to be released to a South American country. I wonder if #PBO’s action on deportation will spur cooperation from our allies and Southern neighbors on this possibility?

What I’ve been wondering, but have seen essential zero ‘ink spilled’ on the topic is -> what happens if Wilson is Indicted.
Envision the Cliven Bundy fiasco, and ask yourself could it be that Gov Nixon and others are preparing because they’ve run the scenario and are quite concerned what to do if a bunch of exceedingly well armed White dudes decided to ride into town to ‘save Wilson.’

I heard earlier in the week that the grand jury had asked for more information - believe on the autopsy ordered on behalf of the Brown family. The discussion was that it appeared the panel was “still working” and even was getting something from “the other side,” since the prosecutor is the one who presents the case. So I guess we could translate that into hoping the grand jury is taking everything seriously.
On the other hand, Darren Wilson killed Michael Brown on Aug. 9. We are up to the Thanksgiving holiday next week. Even though all holidays for the Brown family are changed forever, why do I think the announcement will come just before Thanksgiving … to ruin this particular holiday for each and every other person in the Ferguson area - including the school children on holiday break, all of whom know what’s going on. Salt in the wounds.

Actually, David Brin wrote a great book called “Earth” about that topic. Two protagonists upload their consciousnesses to the Cloud; one is bent on “saving the Earth” by paring humanity back to about 20K population; the other is determined to save humanity AND the earth. Great book.

I read it the other day and just about wept for Jackie and others who have had such horror visited upon them by scum who call themselves “human.”
The numerous UVA fight songs that glorified raping women and destroying their lives were stomach churning. Apparently, at UVA, cheating is not acceptable but gang raping girls is a-ok.
The administration’s acceptance of the rape culture on campus as long as the rich kids parents kept ponying up millions of dollars is nauseating.
I bet UVA never imagined that there would be an Obama administration that would begin cracking down on their despicable attitudes.
The overarching piece made me so proud of Jackie and how far she has come from that brutal day. Wishing her continued success in life.

I hope this school, and others, get public shame and ridicule as well as huge fines for the damage they have condoned. There just aren’t enough adjectives….
I saw this interview of the lady who was either reporting it or was her lawyer, I can’t remember. I was stunned at how her college “friends” told her to get over it and grow up. unbelievable.
I hope the day comes that she decides to sue UVA and file criminal charges against her assailants.
