Don’t know if I said this here before but growing up in the Caribbean during the Watts riots I thought the blacks and the whites were two families fighting. When BBC news said one day that over 250 were injured I thought ‘no family is that big’ so I asked my Mom ‘who are the blacks and whites?’ She tried explaining our differences during which our neighbour who was white passed by. She promptly said, pointing to the street ‘see he is white’ “no”, I responded he is Mr Liddie he is not white, the explanation continued and only ended when I asked my Mom’ “If God can make trees, flowers, stones, clouds and animals different why can’t he make people different too???” She responded he is God that’s why he did, its just some men who refuse to accept our differences. To arrest this problem men and women of honesty will have to speak out and take action. Until white Americans let their fellow white brothers, sisters and institutions know that its no longer business as usual nothing will change..we need a white Martin Luther King who will stand up and say enough is enough we cannot treat our fellow citizens and fellow humans this way..who will be so brave? Who will be so honest. White America this is your problem to fix before it is too late. Thanks for the space to share.

The gondolas are mainly in the narrow canals between the buildings. The open waterway surrounding the city has lots of kinds of boats as pictured.

Would have been more meaningful and more inclusive for *me* if tweeter had said “American citizens burned” instead of “they”. For me the ‘they’ along with picture of the burners suggest something ‘negative’, something ‘thuggish’.
If you look at the pics, it’s not ‘them’. We talk about whites coming forward and I am glad they are since majority of them aren’t racists.
Are there other pics? In this one I see poc doing the flag holding and burning and a mix of onlookers. At a glance (and with no history) tweeter doesn’t seem to be taking sides and ‘they’ could be read as ‘the thugs’ IMO.

Agree with JackieG that the past couple of weeks have been shocking and draining.
We were shocked and we mourned and grieved with the Biden and Obama families for the loss of their stellar son, Beau, rest in peace.
And this week, to have lost leaders of the Charleston community in such a shocking, pre-planned, racist, terrorist manner drained our souls.
As an aside, I read David Remnick’s New Yorker article which placed blame for the Charleston Massacre on the legacy of white supremacy.
But I can’t recommend it — as others have noted, one of his paragraphs begins “Obama is a flawed president…”, which was totally uncalled for. It added nothing to the premise of the article, was just an attack out of blue with no justification.
Mother Jones is right — turn off cable and turn to local newspaper sites (which hopefully aren’t behind paywalls):

After reading your insight, I have to wonder if such an out of context and inappropriate statement was made on the demand of the paper, which is likely, but begs the question: how do these intelligent, well-spoken people look themselves in the eye, as they collect their paycheck? The 5 words in question take too much of the integrity regarding the issues completely away from an otherwise important and informative piece of writing. I was flipping channels and unfortunately landed on CNN and this woman talking head was talking to two men from SC about the confederate flag..one white and one AA. I think the AA was a Pastor and Representative and the other was an Actor. The Actor talked about it was their history blah blah and how some people have used it for hate (funny that’s what American Muslim say about the Quran but that don’t stop Fox and other haters to paint all Muslims with a broad brush) while the Pastor/Rep was not very articulate, talked in audibly, and personally attacked the Actor. There are so many good arguments that can be used I am wondering if the Pastor/Rep was reluctant to talk on camera or unprepared. There was no need for personal attacks on such an important topic. The Actor kept saying the American flag was flown under slavery, the North had slaves, blah blah blah. It just the North stopped slavery that’s why so many AA’s were escaping and going North, the Actor’s arguments made no sense. I bet he is one of those people who believes the Civil War was not about slavery like so many whites in the south believe. They have rewritten history that none of the rest knows is not true.

I’ve heard you say that you try to go into every interview and figure out “Who is this guy?” So what’s the big takeaway here? Who is this guy?
I think this guy is very intense, earnest, focused. He’s very passionate about making peoples lives’ better and making the country better. And the way he negotiates that and keeps going at it every day with seemingly no bitterness or sense of disappointment or anger that he would allow anyone to see. He struck me as a very responsible man. He walks the walk.
That last sentence “He walks the walk.” Is why I originally supported Barack, the candidate and is why I have continued to support my President Obama.

I sometimes feel like I am a lone battler where I live. I am Irish American/Native American. I am on the rolls of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde in Oregon. I only became aware of my Native heritage after my tribe was restored to tribal status. They were dissolved from my age of seven to age thirty-eight. Upon CTGR being restored I was living and teaching elementary school in Juneau, AK much to distant to participate in tribal activities. My students enjoyed my classroom poster proclaiming my tribal identity and my AK Native students beamed and opened up to me upon knowing this. It was not until I retired that I moved to the reservation. At that point I used my twenty-two years of teaching in public schools to give back to my tribe by serving on the tribal education committee for six years.
Teaching future generations is the most noble of professions. You honor your ancestors when you tell their story. Thank you for sharing yours. Thank you for serving your community and the country at large.

Now to the battle. I am in a rural setting with lots of conservative tea party like thinkers outside of the tribe. I meet weekly in an art group and have spoken out numerous times in defense of our President and my tribe. I have even walked out with explanation of why on one occasion when some would not stop disparaging PBO. That made an impact as when the person guilty of driving me out told the next person arriving of the incident expecting support got a reply of “regardless of your political leaning the President should be respected” she called me up to apologize and has toned down her criticisms. I have even heard others speak up to correct bigoted remarks since then. I knew we were about evenly split politically, but felt I was the only one defending PBO. Since my walkout that day others are now speaking up. One person can make a ripple effect. I deal with lots of tribal issue misrepresentations in this White group too. I look as White as they do so they forget my heritage when they speak. I admit that before I embraced my tribal identity I never experienced this bigotry firsthand. Not just White’s, but everyone needs to speak up.
