“When scientists declared in March 2015 that El Niño conditions had developed in the Pacific Ocean, the consensus was that the event was too weak and too late to have much effect on North America. But in the past several months, warm water has been sloshing from the western Pacific toward the Americas and El Niño has strengthened. Surface waters have grown significantly warmer in the central and eastern Pacific, and conditions have become somewhat cooler and drier in the west. By the end of July 2015, scientists at NASA and other agencies started to see some similarities between current conditions and the development of the potent El Niño event of 1997–98.
“We have not seen a signal like this in the tropical Pacific since 1997,” said Bill Patzert, a climatologist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. “It’s no sure bet that we will have a strong El Niño, but the signal is getting stronger. What happens in August through October should make or break this event.”
The maps on this page provide NASA’s view of Pacific Ocean conditions. At the top of the page, you can see snapshots of the averaged sea surface height anomalies at four different moments since March 2015. Shades of red indicate where the ocean stood above normal sea level because warmer water expands to fill more volume (thermal expansion). Shades of blue show where sea level and temperatures were lower than average (thermal contraction). Normal sea-level conditions appear in white. The maps are based on altimetry measurements made by the OSTM/Jason-2 satellite and analyzed by scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Interesting. Right… temperature and rainfall matter. Here in Pacific NW our water storage is in snowpack in the mountains. If it doesn’t get cold enough the water doesn’t get stored.

I have a straight shot of Mt Rainier from our rooftop garden, and it is kind of frightening to see what should be snowpack slowly disappearing up the lower flanks. I’ve been watching all summer, every night, as the light changes, and it’s becoming quite eerie with little to no rain coming in. Forecasts for rain are constantly changed, and we had August heat back in June. Cloudy now, good wind, no moisture.
True Bob, but we will take the rain and hopefully the snow on the mountains from November to February. We sorely need it. It won’t be a sure-all, but a start nonetheless.

He doesn’t believe in trade deals IN PRINCIPLE. WTF?!?!? He’s clueless about the existential issues with guns in this country. Every American problem is solved by 50’s style unions? Hey, I believe in unions big time, but unions are not the cure of all of America’s ills.

In sum, even if Congress prevents the US from fully implementing its specific sanction-lifting commitments, the JCPOA can still go forward.

Here, Security Council resolution 2231 is of key importance. Once the IAEA determines that Iran has done the required actions in modifying its nuclear program that are specified in the JCPOA, we have “Implementation Day” and the previous Security Council sanctions resolutions are terminated. The trigger for that is the IAEA determination: it is essentially out of the hands of the parties, including the United States. So after implementation day, UN Members are basically under no further UN-based obligation to impose nuclear-related sanctions on Iran.”

1. 3 different employees at the dealership who saw the security videos said that #ChristianTaylor WAS NOT & DID NOT attempt to steal a car.
2. The videos from the car dealership and the police dispatch audio show that the officer who killed #ChristianTaylor LIED about a scuffle.
3. #ChristianTaylor appeared to be at the car dealership IN HIS OWN VEHICLE – potentially just looking at cars on the lot for sale.
4. The officer who shot and killed #ChristianTaylor shot him in just 1.3 seconds of seeing him. No scuffle ever happened. At all. Lies.
5. You HAVE to listen to the police dispatch. It’s full of lies and misstatement after misstatement. Clusterfuck.

To protest is part of our political discourse.
I disliked and hated it whenever protesters disrupted the POTUS, FLOTUS or when the Teabaggers in AZ/OK and in NH/ME at POTUS’ events wearing guns.
I was livid when Lady Gaga did her protesting singing before a large crowd in DC calling out Pres Obama. I was PO’ed when that idiot tried to shout POTUS down in the WH.
Dreamers, LGBTQ Activists and Environmentalists have used tactics that I would call offensive……..but in a Democratic Republic, with the support of the Constitution………..Freedom of speech and expression have a two-way street…..those using it would have the accept the costs……..Pro or Con.
The BLM is protesting as a way of finding their way into the conversation of those running for office….BS is not interested in having this conversation…so the meme that is developing is that the BLM folks are disrespectful…or worse…paid for by the HRC campaign…today Sanders left the stage and put out a statement….

Sen Sanders needs to learn that the more he acts like this, showing disdain, issuing press releases, threatening to leave, etc he is showing Thin-skinned as an elected Officer before a public forum or gathering……….He is inviting more protesters. This will Not end well. He doesn’t want for his supporters and the protesters to clash. This will undoubtedly bring in the Police, the last thing his campaign and those protesting before his events would want.
Sen Sanders should learn from Pres Obama’s way of dealing with protesters.
In our form of Democratic Republic, protesting is a VIRTUE.
As a Liberal and Progressive, shouldn’t he have shown more respect for the protesters - addressed their grievances with his plan of action (which he’s had plenty of time to develop) or agreed to meet with them privately later? They are not Tea Party GOPers disrupting for the sake of it. They are people who want to make their voices heard within their own party! That’s why they aren’t showing up at GOP events. They KNOW black lives don’t matter to most of the GOP, but they SHOULD matter to every Democratic candidate, and not just in a dismissive “yeah, yeah, I know but don’t worry, I’ve got this-white guy knows best” kind of way. I didn’t know much about Sanders before; he was an independent who mostly voted with us but sometimes not, a pretty traditional socialist with a history in the Civil Rights movement. I confess I am shocked at his responses to these situations. basically, brushing off deep, existential concerns of people in his own party. Concerns that are highlighted almost weekly in the news as one more “white police vs black anybody” fatality occurs. Am I wrong in thinking that he’s taking all these different Democratic subgroups (the Obama Coalition) for granted and is focusing on peeling off working class white (male) voters from the GOP? If so, it’s not only offensive, but seems to me to be a losing strategy. I think there will have to be much more of a cultural shift for that to happen. (I am not a very deep or profound political thinker, let it be said.) And what does this mean for his appointments in a putative Sanders presidency? Will he continue President Obama’s moves to diversify top government positions - (and not just for diversity’s sake, but to appoint people with the lived experience necessary to understand the issues they will be dealing with)? Or will he not see the need? I understand that Hillary Clinton has taken steps to diversify her campaign, and whether or not that is sheer political calculus (and I don’t believe that it is), at least it shows that she understands the need to appear to listen and respond. I believe on this issue she is more liberal than he is.
Chips will be washing sand out of Danny (and her furniture, and her carpet) until her NEXT vacation. Enjoy!

We start after Labor Day. Because it’s so late this year we’ll be getting out around June 20th. We have two weeks at Christmas, and a February week break (which may disappear in order to get out earlier) and an April week break. I remember years ago when we vacationed in Virginia, that those schools did not have an Easter break and started earlier so they could get out before things got really hot. Does your school do something similar or do you just have more days altogether than ours?

Sanders was to busy bragging about his expected crowds of over 10k at each event this weekend. Instead, he should have been studying how to address “Black Lives Matter”.

Frankly though, I really don’t like when protesters or whatever stripe are pushy and rude. Doesn’t seem like a productive way to achieve your goal. IMO obstreperous behaviour skewers the discussion; it puts your target in a position to be the one sympathized with and your target issue becomes somewhat sidelined. That’s how I see it anyway. [Of course, I’m a bit of a coward when people start shouting and being irrational; it’s one reason I don’t do crowds.]

I’m not big on crowds either, VC. However, Senator Sanders could have easily avoided these confrontations by both his words and actions. That hasn’t happened.
BTW, claiming a 10K crowd in City Center is silly. My wife was on errands and walked through the park and estimated maybe 1K folk.

You are right he could have better prepared himself (and not with the silly argument that he’s been at the forefront of civil rights for 50+ years) since he has encountered them before. However, if BLM continue to use this approach I suspect it will hurt their cause more than it will hurt Sanders.

how quiet and polite should they be…and besides…Sanders is not interested in the BLM….he has dismissed racism as some secondary issue to the issue of class…

Don’t you think that the movement might be better served if they find a path between quiet and ladylike and loud and in-your-face? Yes, Sanders is not interested and has dismissed racism so I don’t get how this current path will help. There must be another way they can position themselves so that Sanders, AND the other candidates, can see them, and hear them, without shutting down the entire process. Wait until question time? Send him their questions earlier and indicate they’ll be present for an answer? Be a silent presence with lots of signs that can’t be missed? I don’t know; what I do know is that the deliberate in-your-face clashing strikes me as a sure way to be brushed aside further.

I’m not sure I am doing a good job explaining how I see this, PF. I *am* incensed by how thoughtlessly and effortlessly police have been killing Blacks, and I believe this is a vitally important issue that needs to be addressed….yesterday. However, I am uneasy about the way some characters in BLM have chosen to highlight the problem. Though the 60s movement was seen as disruptive (and it was), I’m not sure I would draw a parallel between the two. To my mind one was disruptive in that it drew the country’s attention by its ‘quiet’ intensity and persistence. BLM currently is disruptive….because it’s disruptive. They may say/think they want to draw attention to the issue of police brutality to Blacks, but in the case of BLM vs Sanders, I’d say they are not accomplishing *that* goal.
Also, I’m wondering - ‘Why isn’t BLM focusing attention on all declared candidates?’ Have I missed their confrontation with the others?

I think I would feel the same, NoSpin; FTR I am myself a member of the minority group. I too have been gut-punched by some of the stories that have been shared here. I have been rendered speechless by the callousness I’ve seen dished out to unarmed Black citizens, and enraged by the verdicts that murderers have received. I’m not suggesting the group not protest. I just don’t now see the effectiveness of getting into the face of Sanders, or any other politician or yelling your head off on stage the way I saw it done on the Netroots video. It strikes me as negative and unproductive confrontation that’s more likely to lead to a yelling match, and while that might relieve the feelings of those yelling, I don’t see it doing much for Black lives.

250+ years of oppression is long enough. Personally I think it is way past time for talking to anyone. No more cheeks left to turn.
VC, I’m not a member of the minority group - so take these comments for what they are worth. I think there could be other methods of demonstration that would draw attention and be less disruptive, Standing on boxes with sign, tape across their mouths or something simliar. But perhaps they are after a different effect. As far as I’ve heard, they are not disrupting GOP rallies. I’d think this is because they know that black lives don’t and won’t matter to most GOPers. If they are not at Clinton rallies, perhaps it’s because they don’t feel as blocked out by her. Perhaps they are at Sanders rallies because they see his big numbers and his appeal to white liberal and not so liberal people. Some may be turned off by their tactics, probably people who would need more convincing about black lives mattering-the kind who kept saying “It’s not time yet” to Martin Luther King. However others may have their eyes opened to how Sanders 1. how Sanders will treat these important society trends, people who do believe that black lives matter but are blinded by his wonderful ‘liberalism’, and 2. how inflexible and slow-thinking he is in responding to unexpected situations, Doesn’t make him look presidential at all. He can’t even make a joke or even get insulting the way Christie would (which wouldn’t appeal to me, but does to some). Even after one bad experience he has not taken the time to prepare for another possible situation, he just bulls ahead. That may open the eyes of some blind supporters. So for that reason, making these more than silent protests and questions at question time, may be a more effective tactic. I think that in general the #BLM people have behaved reasonably, I think their apology is significant, and I also think the fact that they responded the same way to the killing of that innocent white boy in the same way as they have to police murders of black people is very telling.
Appreciate you adding your take, Maryl. I haven’t seen the apology so not sure what it said. I do think Sanders is no portion of a leader; I’ve felt so since he started to spout his rhetoric by asking what has he *done* in all his years in Congress. I like him the same way I like Warren ….not - all talk and little or no action. However, I very deeply want the BLM to succeed in (one of?) its goal - to get the BLM message solidly on the table. Put simply, my *problem* with the noisy confrontational approach is that I do believe it risks sabotaging the number of eyes that could be opened to Sanders’ unpreparedness to lead the **united** states of America.
Like I’ve said before…Ole Bernie’s campaign is so like Ole man Ron Paul…he drew large crowds too….but what did it get him??? Besides every issue Bernie talks about our President has either talked about or already did it…He so wants to copy BARACK OBAMA…doesn’t he know there can only be one…and that’s PRESIDENT BARACK H. OBAMA…he cannot be duplicated!!!

Yep. I don’t like it either because it always falls back on PBO. And his safety is my absolute first priority. I think BLM, my baby sisters and brothers need to develop a more constructive way to engage candidates, I do not support Bernie Sanders and the chances of him being Presidengt are slim to none. President Obama would have stayed and done what he had to do even if he had to delay to take care of the business at hand. Bernie can’t handle the pressure. It’s not like going to an MSNBC studio and talking trash about PBO or taking the same shit to the senate floor. When you are in the people’s domain which is the community you have to figure out a way to engage. As someone on medicare and social security I would have been interested to hear how he sees implementing PBO’s next stage HC policies. A final thought. Bernie is 72 years old, has lived in Vermont almost his entire adult life. While he philosophically believes in racial equality, he may not understand what it means to confront the issues or to engage the people who are affected. Further, Bernie hasn’t reached out to the BLM activists to make them partners. He and his people just don’t know how to do that.

I’d say you hit the nail on the head here, Idon. I think he thinks he simply needs to tell BLM how long *he* has been on the ‘forefront of the civil rights movement’ - whatever the heck that means to him, it sure doesn’t mean the same to them.

idon, you forget one important detail.. POTUS and his family have security detail. Everyone else are sitting ducks. I could care less how this falls back on POTUS as folks are dealing with this daily, how the msm chooses to spin this is the least of my concern on this issue.
