Gotta go work but wanted to bring this over from the previous thread. Vicki was wondering about Hillary, SNL and the Human Rights Campaign Keynote spot:

I read this a.m. that Hillary Clinton turned down the keynote spot in order to appear on SNL. VP Biden, who is the one who got the ball rolling, even before PBO, with his remarks on Meet the Press in 2012, was second choice. Let that sink in: VP Biden, who has been part the administration that has done more for gay rights than any other, was a sub for the wife of the man who signed DADT and DOMA into law. They created the breakfast speaking spot for her after she turned the keynote spot down.

    From the Times article

“The Human Rights Campaign, led by a former aide to President Bill Clinton from Arkansas, Chad Griffin, has deep ties to Mrs. Clinton and had invited her to deliver the keynote address at its gathering Saturday night. But Mrs. Clinton had a scheduling conflict — she was to appear on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” — so the group added a breakfast at which she could speak.”

Madame Soph, I believe this is the very NYT article that Vicki posted and we were both speculating that the idea that VP Biden was “second choice” after HRC turned down the slot sounds more like propaganda from the media heads than anything. I find it rather odd that HRC would turn down such a key speaking invite just to be on SNL - which she could go on at any other time.

Rather, I believe that VP Biden was initially selected (despite some dissension and grudging among the HRC stans at that org) to be the keynote speaker, and the HRC people decided to create an impression of her being busy at something else - in this case, the SNL show.

Hopefruit, this says it all: “The Human Rights Campaign, led by a former aide to President Bill Clinton from Arkansas, Chad Griggin, has deep ties to Mrs. Clinton”.

I don’t think we have to search more for the explanation as to why Hillary was their first choice to be the keynote speaker.

Unfortunately, the reality is that the Clintons have worked very hard for a couple of decades at making alliances with many many important actors in american politics. Their web of influence is enormous. This is why it will be so difficult to beat Hillary for the nomination, despite her abysmal favorable/unfavorable numbers, despite the fact that her polls on electability in the general elections are going down.

I happen to think that Joe Biden would be a stronger candidate in the general election. But the Clintons won’t back down. It will take absolutely horrible poll numbers against republicans for them to lose the support of the establishment.

I’m not sure Joe will have the stomach to go against her and her whole apparatus of allies.

    • 15 Vicki
      October 4, 2025 at 1:38 pm

Hi again, Madame Soph. I find this explanation to be highly unlikely. SNL is on every week and Hillary could have appeared there next week.
VP Biden got the honor. Why would anybody decide to explain that?

        Back from working :-)
Hi Vicki, I left this on the previous thread.

This was the season opener for SNL, expecting higher viewership and press than another week. When I saw that the Human Rights Campaign is led by a former aide to Bill Clinton, who’s from Arkansas, it is completely believable to me that he would have wanted Hillary first. It is also believable to me that she would diss the organization to try to up her “cool cred” with an SNL appearance. Don’t you guys remember Bill getting the GLAAD award? This just seems like the same s#!t to me - no need for conspiracy theories.

I actually think the news that Hillary turned the keynote down to go on SNL makes her look bad and is a typical Hillary tone-def misstep.

        October 4, 2025 at 8:19 pm

EXACTLY VC…There’s NO way that HRC would turn down an annual keynote address invite just to be on a 2nd-rate comedy show that airs EVERY WEEK! This is the only HRC dinner before the Dem primaries - why would HRC turn this down? I don’t buy it.

Yes, I love fall. Oct. 2 was our forty-fourth Wedding Aniversary. We went out on Oct 1. Of all days to have planned ahead and bought tickets to see Lewis Black in NE WY! Unfortunately we had stupid hecklers in the front row and he got MAD! Needless to say the town with nothing to joke about became a town never to visit.

      GA everyone.

These Sanders fans are not particularly savvy it seems. PBO redefined the way campaigning is done and everyone is now using it as a template. It therefore stands to reason that with new apps, platforms and sites, campaign reach should have increased and this may be the likely result - not discounting the support.

Sanders himself was on some MSNBC program recently talking about his small donors and grass roots campaign etc . Basically using the same method PBO did when many laughed at him and called him just a community organizer.

They should be thanking PBO for paving the way rather than trying to suggest that one is better than the other because of some unconfirmed crowd size.

PBO’s comment on becoming a single issue voter until we have enough legislators to pass sensible gun regulations helped me with my future Democratic Primary vote. Here is my lineup order for the Primary.
    1-Joe Biden (Run Joe Run)
    2-Martin O’Malley
    3-Hillary Clinton

Carson tops Trump in new poll?

BWA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

Donald Trump has boasted that he’s “leading every poll and in most cases big.” Not anymore. The latest IBD/TIPP Poll shows him in second place, seven points behind Ben Carson.

The nationwide survey found that 24% of Republicans back Carson, compared with 17% who say they support Trump.

Marco Rubio came in third with 11% and Carly Fiorina fourth at 9%. Jeb Bush, once considered a prohibitive favorite, ranked fifth with just 8% support, which was a point lower than those who say they are still undecided.

It was supposed to have been the best Pollster in 2004, 2008 and 2012……a month in before the Nov elections respectively.
Frank Luntz was tweeting about it yesterday. He used that poll and some others to graphically show that the trajectory is that Trump is on his way down. Time will tell.

    Ok Everyone,

Peanut wants to perform in her school’s talent show. So, I ask her what song she wants to sing, and she goes ‘ that love song.’
I’m like, ‘ um, there are a lot of love songs.’
Peanut: “you know the one - they spell out love in the song. ”

She wants to sing Nat King Cole’s L-O-V-E.

My heart just stopped. I am like, good music is universal.
Who would think that a seven-year-old in 2015, would want to sing Nat King Cole?

Just printed out the lyrics for her to read and memorize.

We spent part of the afternoon, just wandering around youtube. She heard some Jackson 5 (“Michael Jackson sang when he was a kid? He had brothers?”); ABBA (she likes Dancing Queen); YMCA (we were standing in the living room, doing the YMCA together - do you remember being so naive when it first came out and you had no clue that it had anything to do with being gay?); Ella Fitzgerald (I can thank the show A.N.T. Farm for this - they had a ‘back in the day’ episode, and the Black girl played Ella Fitzgerald), and Aretha Franklin (because she sang for Pope Francis-Peanut goes to a Catholic School).

I had a good afternoon with Peanut.

‘ The right will do everything within its considerable power to promote the idea that Bush was sincere, a man of faith and conviction, a wise leader who “won” two wars, a man who defended traditional cultural values, a caring family man. The reality of Bush’s failures will be obscured. The divisiveness, the squashing of dissent, the daily lies, the death toll in Iraq and Afghanistan and New Orleans…all of that will be tossed down the memory hole if progressives don’t push back and push back hard. ‘

academia.edu: Chatpter 20: Oathkeepers, Rea Party Network with Patriots [Militia]

“This chapter examines the networking and messaging of Oath Keepers with others in the Patriot movement and the Tea Party movement. This chapter also demonstrates that the Patriot movement‖ is actually an extension of the Christian Right.

It is another component of the Christian Right by virtue of the similarity of ideas and the organizations that are linked to the Christian Right within the Patriot movement. The main ideas that serve to bind the Christian and the Patriot movements together are opposition to the New World Order and its concomitant Agenda21, according to the movements‘cconspiracy theories. Belief in these twin conspiracy theories act as epistemological markers, if you will, that identify at the individual and organization levels of analysis who belongs and who does not belong in the movements. But, as we shall demonstrate in this chapter, these twin conspiracy theories also allows individuals and organizations to mobilize and act on behalf of oil, gas, coal, mining, timber, and grazing industries to reduce or remove environmental laws that would boost corporate and billionaires‘ profits, and, transfer hundreds of millions of public acres and trillions of dollars of profits to these very same corporations and billionaires. This, then, is the prelude to the Battle of Bunkerville which pitted Cliven Bundy and his Patriot movement allies (and Republican Party and conservative media) against the Bureau of Land Management. While the actual confrontation will be covered in the next two chapters and the deep backgroun which links the American Legislative Exchange Council, the American Lands Council, and the Patriot movement to the Battle of Bunkerville‖ will be covered in Chapter 23, this chapter analyzes how Oath Keepers implemented the Vieira-North-Lind-Paul strategy through networking and synergistic messaging.

The Patriot Movement is Extension of Christian Right Ron Paul‘s post presidential network of organizations, the Campaign for Liberty, the National Precinct Alliance, the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association, and Oath Keepers were formed as result of the open and secret portions of the North-Paul strategy. Much of what the Southern Poverty Law Center counted in 2013 as active groups in the ―Patriot movement‖ are, in fact, groups closely linked to Ron Paul and the Christian Right.
