      GM amk (Google tells me it’s 1am somewhere in India now)…

      First thing I thought of when I saw this Tapper tweet was “this is a person who wants @POTUS’ job, yet aside from the sitting around being miserable part, is what the current President faces every. single. f*****g. day.”

      Looks like Jeb! has no filters, and he’s gonna get a reprimand from Poppa this weekend.

      Sheesh, once again, embarrassed to be an American. :(

      Somehow, he thinks a big part of the president’s job is ‘sitting around’. Probably he got this idea from seeing his brother’s years in office spent largely on vacation in Texas.

      And all Jeb wants to do is repeal any progress made in the past 7 years, keep women pregnant & defund America - which equates to moving backwards as opposed to going nowhere

          Agree, amk.

          And this time, I think GOP is going to suffer throughout the US Congress, as well as, in many State exec and legislative elections —>> IF (BOLD, UNDERSCORE, 49 FONT) Madame Secretary can truly serve as broad ‘coattails’ or Martin O’Malley manages to pull an “Obama” and similarly motivate at the grass roots level.

          It is worth remembering as I noted several days ago, the 23 Oct 2025 Gallup National poll summary predicted Senator Clinton was unbeatable & she ended not only being resoundingly defeated by Senator Obama, her exceedingly negative campaigning did nothing to help the D’s expand at either the Federal or State level.

          So, my hope is that either Governor O’Malley, by 3 Feb 2016, is demonstrating the likelihood of being a big winner against Clinton or he pulls the plug and supports her aggressively.

          Senator Sanders very white fans have zero chance of delivering anything other than a potentially damaging distraction. He’s not fit to even do his job as Senator - and he has the record to prove just how accurate that assessment is.

            GA Dr. Bob.

            Our paths haven’t crossed recently here at TOD (due to my checking here early/late :( ).

            Hope you had a successful/fruitful trip recently.

            There’s so much that drives me nuts about our overpaid, juvenile, lazy MSM, but I’ve yet to see a tweet reminding audience that Presidential candidates have a ceiling of support.

            MSM breathlessly tweet meaningless polls which are unrepresentative of the US voting population and stifle the fact that Governor O’Malley is even a Dem candidate.

            Haven’t paid much attention to the 2016 horserace (devastated that @VP isn’t running, been in a political daze ever since), but plan on watching tonight’s Iowa JJ.

            As a reminder…

      Bobfr, I agree with you about 99.9999% of the time. And yes what they did was reprehensible and vindictive. President Obama has already beaten the Republicans every way imaginable. I just don’t think it’s useful for President Obama to spend his last year plus time in office going after the Republicans over a letter that the leaders of Iran called stupid.

        Thank you for your comment, Don. However, I respectfully disagree.

        They broke the law. And, no just any law.

        My tweet is directed at the Dem Leader of the Senate and US AG, specifically, and not the President.

        The petition, a record setting one for both the number of co-signers and the rate at which it was signed, is a simple way of reminding Senator Reid & AG Lynch of the criminal behavior of 47 US Senators sworn to an Oath of Office that absolutely allows them no wiggle room regarding their willful attempt to damage the US (and our strongest allies).

            Most definitely, pf58.

            He has won tough elections before, so he’s likely got some juice.

            However, I think this assessment is accurate (though I have no doubt that the BG may well be driving an ‘agenda,’ as well):

            “O’Malley’s one last shot to make big impression”

            On Tuesday former US senator Jim Webb dropped out of the Democratic contest. Today former Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafeedid the same thing. If former Maryland governor Martin O’Malley doesn’t want to go down the same path, he’ll need to give the speech of his life Saturday night in Iowa.

            clip

            And in 2007, Barack Obama’s performance at the Iowa JJ was so powerful that many, including Bill Richardson, remember it as the first time they believed he could win the thing.

            Which brings us back to O’Malley. He will probably never have the chance to deliver a 15-minute speech uninterrupted in front of 6,000 Iowa activists and all the national media for the rest of the campaign.”

    some update on Kasich:

    Yes, when he entered the gop race, there was some hyping him as one who is bound to do well;

    living in his home state, I can tell you that the local media was pushing him very hard.

    no surprise here; naturally as the state’s candidate and the fact that the state’s largest paper and a number of media outlets are owned by a single republican family.

    however, even the outlets like our public radio started giving moment-by-moment updates about Kasich => so irritating because this is my only source of information locally;

    recently, I notice that the hype on public radio has waned.

    in fact, they are now routinely reporting that although Kasich is another one who has put “all his hopes of electoral success in NH” things are looking rather bleak;

    Kasich has invested a significant portion of his campaign finances in NH and reportedly he is advertising heavily there;

    however after the initial bump in polls in NH, Kasich’s team is expressing great concern that the more they seem to spend on advertising in NH, the lower they seem to be polling.

    this is NOT Kasich’s first run at getting the gop nomination and as of now, it seems he may not do any better this time round;

    so next candidate???

    Previously I suggested that John Judis wrote the definitive historical comparison that helps us understand Trump-mania. But now Kathleen Frydi has given us another very interesting look at how, as she says, our present might be mirroring our past.

    Frydi draws a comparison to the mid-nineteenth century rise of the “Know-Nothings” (otherwise known as the American Party) that sprang from the Whigs.

          In a serious reply, Democrats have been able to adapt to changing political winds. I mean, we went from the party of segregation to that of civil rights, while the GOP went the other way. At first that worked for them; but we made the better long term bet.

              US political theorists divide American history into distinct “party systems”. We’re now in the “Sixth Party System”, which was a reaction to the New Deal. PBO’s election was the beginning of the end of that party system. With the GOP imploding, and the Dems trying to deal with the Obama shockwave, I think it’s safe to say we’re entering the 7th party System.

              • 91 prettyfoot58
                October 24, 2025 at 3:38 pm

                https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Party_system
                Fifth Party System: This system was defined by the creation of the New Deal Coalition by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in response to the Great Depression. This coalition supporting new social welfare programs brought together many under-privileged, working class, and minority groups including unions, Catholics, and Jews. It also attracted African-Americans, who had previously largely supported the Republican Party due to Lincoln’s freeing of the slaves. This era lasted approximately until 1968.[16]

                Sixth Party System: This system is currently developing. It appears to have begun with the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with the Democrats subsequently losing their long dominance of the South in the late 1960s, leading to a Republican dominance as evidenced by election results.[17]

                ************************

                You are right about entering a 7th party system….

                but then there is this….

    So why are we even more likely now to fail to pass an increase than we were when we had this same crisis in 2011, then again in 2013, then again in 2014? Look at what’s going on in the House. Conservatives there are feeling emboldened because they just got rid of John Boehner, as they had wanted to do for so long. They feel strong and empowered, so naturally they believe that this is a battle they can win, even if they’ve lost before. And they’ve upped their demands.

    Now they want not just general budget cuts in exchange for raising the ceiling, but cuts specifically to Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.

          I think Boehner got out because he doesn’t want to deal with the RWNJs. By resigning, he has some say in who will be the next speaker & he has tried to get someone he considers relatively sane. If Boehner had not resigned he would have been re-elected with support of democrats & he did not want to handle the RWNJ fallout from that.

              Ryan is a bit player - he will fail in a similar fashion to the VP nomination. Between being elected and failing he will have to get democratic help to finance the government & raise the debt ceiling - or let the country fall into economic disaster - either way he is politically done - he should have said NO.

        Thanks so much again, Bob, for asking. About 3 weeks ago (I think) he had to go to the hospital for another 4 days with an infection, but then was sent home with long-term antibiotic IV therapy. So, now, he’s doing fine and hasn’t had any problems since. The home health nurses come to check on him (and the IV, of course) regularly, and he’s “on a steady path to full wellness” !! Of course, it’ll be months until he gets the final surgery when the “shark bite” heals, to close it (and months of re-packing it with gauze in the healing process), but he’s progressing nicely, and has maintained that great attitude of his! Life is good.

    Interesting HRC anecdote. My 95-year old mother in law has been a lifelong Democrat who voted in every election since she was 21 (the age allowed for voting in olden times). She has, however, rarely contributed money. For years she has told us how much she dislikes Hillary Clinton and has recently complained that she would not like to see her as the nominee 2016. On Thursday, MIL sat in her arm chair and watched all 11 hours of the Benghazi hearings. She then got up and wrote a check to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. If the Republicans on the Benghazi committee had colluded with Hilary C to advance her electoral changes, they could not have done a better job. I call this another episode in the ‘Republicans are Idiots’ saga.

      Interesting indeed, jackie. Yesterday I spent over 4 hours in my car so listened to that many hours of progressive talk radio-from Stephanie Miller to Thom Hartmann (not much of his program) and ending with Michael Sgnorelli. I heard a good number of callers identify themselves as big Bernie supporters (both male and female), but to a person, they all said Thursday changed their mind……they still like Bernie, but now realize that he probably can’t win and/or is not truly presidential. (That’s paraphrasing, but close to what they all said.) One man said his wife was a big Bernie supporter, had never donated a penny to any campaign. As soon as the “hearing” ended, she wrote a check and sent it to Hillary’s campaign.

        Will add that I listened to all of Rachel’s interview with HRC last night. Gotta give it to Rachel: She asked some tough and touchy questions and Hillary didn’t blink and gave, what I felt, were straightforward answers. They talked about getting more Dems elected in the “down ticket” races, how important that is. I don’t remember her specifics, but I felt she made some good points and has a good plan for expanding and growing the party.

        I can’t say I am a big fan of HRC. However, we MUST have a Dem in the WH and I do feel she is out best hope. We don’t need to do what the GOP has done-die on the cross of purity and having to agree with everything. Guess another way of saying it is we need to do more of what we’ve heard: “fall in line” —- If we want to keep the WH and win some other races (House, Senate and state positions), we need to stop being whiny and do what we have to do. Our country and its future is too important to not do that!!!!!!

          TN, you can bet that if Hillary is the nominee, President Obama will do everything in his power to stump for her and raise money. I feel we owe it to him to follow his lead.

          It seems anyone in the media will ask a democrat the “tough questions” - but no-where does this happen to a GOP candidate. Why is Trump not being called out because he can’t handle a debate longer than 2 hours? Why is no-one getting GOP answers to policy questions. It is unreal that the top GOP candidate has no policies and the No 2 candidate has only RWNJ policies.

    As a Catholic, I felt overjoyed to read this. The flow and beauty of his language, how he revealed his thought processes … oh my. (Sorry to gush.) But there are deep meanings inside of the text for every one of us men and women who inhabit the planet, including those of no faith. We won’t agree with the thrust of all of it, and that’s part of the human condition, but it’s deep.

    I also laugh, because Pope Francis is NOT a Pope to be taken for granted … every word he says or writes is considered and measured (like our genius President Obama), but it has a message. To American Bishops and Cardinals attending this Synod, his message surely must be something like “I heard you and I want you to know I’m watching you. I’ll be reaching out to you, soon, if you don’t get with the program.”

    And he may have thought to himself, “Didn’t you hear me say, ‘Who am I to judge?’ Did I have to add, ‘And who are YOU to judge?'”

      JO’B, when I read the line-“The Church’s first duty is not to lay down condemnations or anathemas, but to proclaim God’s mercy, to call to conversion and to lead all men and women to salvation”-I would bet that a lot of those at the synod were thinking, “Oh, Hell.”

    I’ve been thinking about a book I read a couple of decades ago.

    It’s called “Russian Spring”, by Norman Spinrad.

    In it, the US is isolated from the rest of the world because, in part, it defaulted on its debts. (It has a happy ending which I won’t ruin in case you want to see if your local library has a copy. Really, it’s a great read.)

    It was published in 1991, when the debt was the topic of the day, and serious people were talking about the US becoming a dead beat.

    Fast forward 20 years, and now there’s a very real threat that the scifi of “Russian Spring” may come true.

    Good going, America. Good going.

    In looking at the list of 21 items, a lot of the things they are pushing for would simply undo the reforms instituted by Newt Gingrich that put power in the hands of the House Leadership - specifically the Speaker. In that way, they grant the insurgents continuing power to be disruptive.

    I wish I could tell women it’s going to be easy, but we know it won’t be. There are going to be times when someone may be the only woman in a room, standing up for this agenda, but we won’t waiver. There are going to be times when people will try to divide us or make us feel small, but we will stand firm and hold our sisters tall. There are going to be times when we’re afraid, or just plain tired, but we can’t give up. And we can’t worry too much about how this ends, or where we are right now as we get started. We just need the courage to take a stand, and to fight for the women of Mississippi.
