I have always loved that picture of PBO with Sasha. They grow so fast. She is almost as tall as he is. I still remember her bouncing her way down to the inauguration area and stepping up on her little ‘box’ to witness her father being sworn in back in Jan 2009. We will NEVER see the likes of this family again. NEVER!! I’m already kinda sad about it…

Ison, the only way I can deal with the painful wrench of not having our President in the White House is to think of what he and Michelle need now. They’ve gone for almost eight years of sleepless nights and backbreaking burdens. They are also ON every day and as Michelle said, “the girls are tired of living in a museum.” We will always have our memories, but for their sake, they need to move on to a new phase in their lives. And we need to ensure that their legacy endures by keeping the barbarian Trump from destroying every good thing that PBO has worked for.

GM, JackieG. I ❤ ❤ the depth of thought you regularly share here and the way you often get to the very ❤ of the matter! THANK you so much for sharing your honest feelings and insights day after day.

This is beautifully expressed IMO (and mirrors how I feel) ….. ↓ ↓ ↓

"I can deal with the painful wrench of not having our President in the White House [because I] think of what he and Michelle need now"

It's the main reason I do not admit to any sadness that the Obamas' WH time is almost over even though I will miss them tremendously in that particular role. This, plus the fact that I'm convinced Michelle & Barack will make a bigger impact in their life after 1600 when their hands are no longer tied. I've come to the personal conclusion that the White House stint and their mastery there was but a needed foundation – a launch pad if you will – to their ensuing world contribution.

Well, I guess the gloves are off for real now. Sanders and Devine are a vicious duo. Sanders is determined to be the nominee and go down in flames in the general or lose the nomination and take Clinton down with him.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/19/us/politics/bernie-sanderss-campaign-accuses-head-of-dnc-of-favoritism.html?emc=edit_th_20160519&nl=todaysheadlines&nlid=35117399&_r=0

“Defiant and determined to transform the Democratic Party, Senator Bernie Sanders is opening a two-month phase of his presidential campaign aimed at inflicting a heavy blow on Hillary Clinton in California and amassing enough leverage to advance his agenda at the convention in July — or even wrest the nomination from her.

““The only thing that matters is what happens between now and June 14,” Mr. Devine said, referring to the final Democratic primary, in the District of Columbia. “We have to put the blinders on and focus on the best case to make in the upcoming states. If we do that, we can be in a strong position to make the best closing argument before the convention. If not, everyone will know in mid-June, and we’ll have to take a hard look at where things stand.”

“For weeks, some current and former Sanders campaign workers have privately acknowledged feeling disheartened about Mr. Weaver’s determination to go after the Democratic National Committee, fearing a pitched battle with the party they hope to support in the general election. ”

I hope they stand with Sanders being handed his head on a platter. I hope Hillary doesn’t feel pressured into kowtowing to the old terrorist. This is truly disgusting and he’s losing even the friends he had in the Senate. It just shows that you can hide out in the Senate doing little or nothing for years but given a taste of power the mask comes off

      May 19, 2016 at 8:10 am

Morning Mary. The Sanders campaign has descended into madness. Hillary is the presumptive nominee. She will win Puerto Rico on June 5 and pick up a huge chunk of New Jersey delegates early in the night on June 7 and she will have reached her delegate goal. At that point it won’t even matter what the California results are, although I think she’ll win there, especially after the disgraceful treatment of Sen. Boxer in Nevada. Hillary will be conciliatory to Sanders supporters regarding issues and she will not go negative on Bernie. But the Democratic Party will not tolerate disruptive nonsense at the convention and will find way to make Sanders’ life miserable when he returns to the Senate. Instead of returning with increased influence in the Senate, he will go back as a pariah and will lose whatever power he once had. At this point I doubt he’ll win back his Senate seat in 2018.

      • May 19, 2016 at 8:15 am

I’m usually not vindictive – for one thing I don’t have the attention span – but I certainly hope they make his life very miserable indeed!!!

Good morning 57. In my area of Southern California, known as the San Gabriel Valley which includes Pasadena, Hillary’s team is really doing a lot of door-to-door canvassing as well as phone banking. They have both scheduled for Saturday & Sunday again this weekend. And that’s just in my area. I’m sure they’re repeating this in other areas.

I’m up north in Marin County and I see the same here, GGail. Phone banks twice a week and door to door on weekends. So I’m thinking it’s pretty much a state wide plan. At least I hope so.

idon, if there is a team in NoCal, then our fierce Obot; meta will know where it is and how you can become involved with them. I hope you do become involved. We need all hands on deck in California 🙂

That is great to heal, GGail. I am a terrible phone banker but if I can, I may try to call this weekend. We cannot give this bastard any talking points. As it is, wasn’t he supposed to trounce in OR by double digits? I said to Mr. 57 the night of the election, “If HRC keeps him to under 10 in OR it’s a bragging point for HRC & a show of deflating support for BS.” Then he pulls a 6-pt win and it’s called a massive victory. God.

Good for you 57! All it takes is a little practice. You know everything there is to know about why Hillary is the best choice, all you have to do is pretend you’re calling a long lost friend 🙂

Dear 57, I am exactly the same way about phone banking. I did some last month where we were just asking who they would vote for, and I was a nervous wreck on each call. I’m thinking precinct walking may be easier because I can see who I am talking to, and they pair you with a veteran walker. Gotta get over my fears somehow, because, as you say, it is imperative that CA put BS away.

We all need to do something. BS has become a danger, and we have real dangers to face in Trump & the GOP, who are coalescing while BS is burning down the house. I donate, but my heart tells me to do more.

Gail has a point – practice really does help, 57F. I did a little phone banking in Texas in summer of 2012, and after a lot of heart pounding on my initial calls (plus a few answering machines 😉 ), I was able to relax a bit when I connected with a couple of real people. It was a good feeling whenever they said they were with *my guy*. Also, those who weren’t were actually polite too.

Go for it – it gives a good *participating* feeling! [at least, it did for me]

Arapaho, I agree with every word of the Newsweek article. Bernie is a disgrace–nothing more. Al Giordano has pledged to run against Bernie in Vermont in 2018. I hope he does run and win. That would be a true progressive voice in the Senate as opposed to a sore loser.

This line of reasoning by Eichenwald must get traction. The whole “free college” thing is looking like a cynical ploy to target the new, uninformed voters. The broad concerns of the nation are literally never addressed by BS. He is completely uninterested in anything but his call for vengeance against those who look at the world any differently than he does.

Can’t wait for the report, Jackie.

Anecdotal evidence: I know of no new BS supporters. I know plenty of former BS supporters who have it with BS & his hateful, ignorant mob, but are good enough Dems to actually look at HRC and like what they see.

That BS, Weaver & Devine would allow the GOP to coalesce around a reality TV star, while fomenting civil war on our side – their damned careers should be effing over.

      • May 19, 2016 at 9:50 am

The MSM has been quick to broadcast polls that first show the margin between HRC and Trump closing in national polls, and this morning, showing Trump leading.

Once Trump was named the presumptive nominee for the GOP, of course it made sense(?) that more GOPers would rally and support that one person. By staying in the race, Bernie keeps the same from happening on the Democratic side. Increasing the possibility of this type narrative is just another way BS is hurting HRC’s candidacy and the Democratic party.

        • 46 57andfemale
          May 19, 2016 at 10:08 am

The decent pollsters and analysts said that it would tighten, Trump would look strong, until HRC could mount a decent campaign. BS, the traitor, is keeping her from doing that. We so need a good showing in NJ & CA. BS is effing nuts.

Here’s what Robert Reich said on FB: ”
Many of you who support Bernie ask me what you should do at this point. My suggestion:
      1. Continue to work like hell for Bernie, especially given upcoming primaries in California and New Jersey on June 7. Putting aside superdelegates, the difference between him and Hillary Clinton isn’t huge. So far, Bernie has won nearly 10 million votes and has 1,499 pledged delegates. Hillary Clinton has won 13 million votes and has 1,771 pledged delegates. California could make a huge difference.
      2. Don’t demonize or denigrate Hillary Clinton. If she wins the Democratic nomination, I urge you to work like hell for her. She’ll be the only person standing between Donald Trump and the presidency of the United States. Besides, as I’ve said before, she’ll be an excellent president for the system we now have, even though Bernie would be the best president for the system we need.
      3. Never, ever give up fighting against the increasing concentration of wealth and power at the top, which is undermining our democracy and distorting our economy. That means, if Hillary Clinton is elected, I urge you to turn Bernie’s campaign into a movement – even a third party – to influence elections at the state level in 2018 and the presidency in 2020. No movement to change the allocation of power succeeds easily or quickly. We are in this for the long haul.
      What do you think?”

Point #1 is disingenuous to the extreme. There’s no way Bernie can win. But what was more interesting was the top responses of his followers:

“Yes to the third party, but no to fighting for Hillary. She’s never fought for me, so she has no right to expect me to fight for her. If Bernie doesn’t get the nomination, I’ll be writing him in anyway come November.”

…but the writers do believe Sanders supporters will need to vote Hillary Clinton in the fall to avoid the “right-wing takeover” of a Trump presidency.

What the developer leaves off his tax returns may be more interesting than what he reports…

    http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2016/05/donald-trump-tax-returns-2016-213901

Did Trump pay personally when he bought Mar-A-Largo in 1985? Personal expenses charged to a company counts as compensation. Failing to report that as taxable income is illegal.

If a corporation bought Mar-A-Largo and provided it as a corporate perk, did Trump pay taxes on the benefit?

Did Trump personally pay for his condo, and does he pay for the condo fees, utilities, improvements, etc? If not…Were these amenities provided as a corporate perk? If so, did Trump pay the millions that would be owed in taxes?

We already know that Trump has a tendency to blur the business and the personal when it comes to finance. The thousands of pages of mumbo jumbo associated with one hotel deal or another probably don’t reveal anything.

The goal of tax cheats is usually to avoid using their own shekels to pay for personal expenses.

U.S. District Court judge orders Kobach to register thousands of Kansans
Injunction blocks enforcement of Kansas’ proof-of-citizenship law for voting in federal races
    By Tim Carpenter
    timothy.carpenter@cjonline.com
A federal court judge ordered Kansas officials Tuesday to register thousands of people to vote in federal elections who had applications derailed for not showing documentation of citizenship when registering at one of the state’s motor vehicle offices.

Dale Ho, director of the Voting Rights Project with the American Civil Liberties Union, said the ruling required the state to begin registering on June 1 people hampered by the proof-of-citizenship requirement at the motor vehicle offices operated by the Kansas Department of Revenue.

“This ruling lifts the barrier that the state illegally imposed on Kansans who were trying to register to vote. It means thousands of people who could have been sidelined during the upcoming primary and general election will be able to participate,” Ho said.

The media’s latest Trump ‘narrative’ is plainly wrong
    05/18/16 12:45 PM—UPDATED 05/18/16 12:57 PM
    By Steve Benen
Some of the political media establishment has apparently settled on a new “narrative”: Donald Trump will appeal to Democrats by breaking with Republican orthodoxy and endorsing some progressive goals. It might be a compelling thesis, if it were in any way true.

And yet, there it was again in the New York Times yesterday.

On a range of issues, Mr. Trump seems to be taking a page from the Sanders playbook, expressing a willingness to increase the minimum wage, suggesting that the wealthy may pay higher taxes than under his original proposal, attacking Mrs. Clinton from the left on national security and Wall Street, and making clear that his opposition to free trade will be a centerpiece of his general election campaign.

As Mr. Trump lays the groundwork for his likely showdown with Mrs. Clinton, he is staking out a series of populist positions that could help him woo working-class Democrats in November.

Again, if these observations were rooted in fact, the thesis might have merit, but it’s important not to fall for shallow hype and bogus narratives. Trump did not endorse a minimum-wage hike; he actually said there shouldn’t be a federal minimum wage at all. He did not call for higher taxes on the wealthy; he proposed literally the exact opposite.

    • 75 jackiegrumbacher
      May 19, 2016 at 9:27 am

The media is hard at work building up Trump and vilifying Hillary because they want to heighten fear and create a competitive race so they can get viewers, readers, listeners. You will hear about Hillary’s negatives, but not Trump’s. You will hear that Trump is going to win over Democrats, but not that Hillary may win may Republican women who don’t appreciate misogyny. We’re going to have to ignore it all, put our heads down and work as if our lives depended on it.

      • May 19, 2016 at 12:02 pm

I believe the media not only wants a horserace, they are desperate for him to win. It’s already turned into a program of remaking his image into something wholly fabricated. Just when you think you can’t loathe the press more, there’s a whole new level of disgust in the making.

Discouraging polls force John McCain to scramble in Arizona
    05/18/16 11:20 AM
    By Steve Benen

PPP’s new Arizona poll finds that John McCain has a negative approval rating with Republican primary voters, and is at pretty serious risk of losing nomination for another term. Only 35% of GOP voters approve of the job McCain is doing to 50% who disapprove. […]

McCain is polling at only 39% in the Republican primary field. He’s benefiting from having multiple opponents. Kelli Ward is at 26%, Alex Meluskey at 4%, Scott McBean at 3%, and Clair Van Steenwyk at 2%. 27% are undecided…. When you narrow the field down to just a choice between McCain and Ward, it’s a tie at 41%. Ward is polling this competitively at this point despite having only 41% name recognition.

Please send that tired old man home AZ.

Also, just when I’d thought our ‘news’ media could not sink any lower, they have yet again found a longer shovel. This promoting Trump thru Bernie’s platform is so transparent. Of course, that doesn’t mean it won’t work. the hatred a lot of Bernie bros seem to have for Hillary (i.e. read: women) is palpable. By the time MSNBC and CNN are done with Trump, he’ll look like the 2nd coming of George Washington, mother Teresa and Winston Churchill all combined.

In a way this reminds me how in 2008 the news media just followed Sarah Palin around like a puppy dog all in the vain attempt of pulling off HRC ‘pumas’ from supporting PBO. Thankfully everything the GOP and its acolytes touch these days turns to fail and this will end no differently.

      PBO & VP Joe forever!

YES HE IS GGAIL…AND HE HAS BEEN TREATED POORLY IN THIS COUNTRY…DONALD TRUMP IS A SYMBOL OF WHAT THE IGNORANCE, GREED AND RACISM IN THIS COUNTRY HAS ……SOWN. WE SHALL NOT REAP A PLENTIFUL GARDEN!

  27. May 19, 2016 at 9:43 am

Trump would be ready to sue if this were the other way around. I’m glad that HRC’s campaign is not letting it take them off point and is keeping the heat on Trump about real issues.

A Hillary Clinton aide said early Thursday that Donald Trump is trying to “change the subject” from issues like his taxes, after the presumptive Republican presidential nominee accused Bill Clinton of rape.

“Trump is doing what he does best, attacking when he feels wounded and dragging the American people through the mud for his own gain,” Nick Merrill, the Democratic front-runner’s spokesman, said in a statement.

“If that’s the kind campaign he wants to run, that’s his choice,” he added. “Hillary Clinton is running a campaign to be president for all of America.
“It’s not surprising that after a week of still refusing to release his taxes and likening Oakland and Ferguson to the dangers in Iraq, of course he wants to change the subject. So while he licks his wounds, we’ll continue to focus on improving the lives of the American people.”

    • May 19, 2016 at 10:09 am

This is what the media and Republicans want, that piece of crap Donald Trump. Wasn’t their some talk about Trump first wife saying he rape her?.

      May 19, 2016 at 12:28 pm

I would have thought that the Trump campaign would want to stay away from the sexual issues of their opponent when The Donald had two out of his three marriages end with his having an affair with his next wife, asking his then mistress to have an abortion, and being a playboy himself.

    Good Morning TOD

    THIS right here!!!

I take exception with the Hillary campaign that thinks they are going to beat Trump based on substance. He’s a thug but I don’t believe that you get in the gutter with him like Rubio did. Instead you must de-legitimize him just like Elizabeth Warren has been doing. Make him out to be the fool that he is to the American public and leave it up to his own inability to be disciplined enough to not take the bait and I think he will fall flat on his face.

Jamelle Bouie is on point with this.

Want to get rid of Trump, let the President support him. Even the right wing racists bigots would run from Trump.

      • May 19, 2016 at 10:18 am

Lol….normally, I would say that would probably be true. But given the way things have panned out for Trump despite his rhetoric and actions, I don’t have confidence that even *that* would work.

  31. May 19, 2016 at 10:08 am

So what’s the reason for Bernie’s push for another debate…on FOX no less? Is it because he can’t afford to have the big rallies or run the TV ads in CA?

They believed #BS. They also believed the Polls. Remember some advised VP Biden not to run. But the GOP & US Media used the EMails to bring HRC’s Fav down. Dems are easily spooked. Some Us wrote it here. Some cautioned for calm & constructive criticism. Dems hate conflict. Since BS was never attacked, his appeal went up. It will take great Positive message from the President & Co to start turning things around…….borrowing Zero Terror attacks, Zika epidemic in US, Immigrants streaming into US from the Southern Borders. When US is doing well like in 2000, Dems forget who the real USA’s political Enemy is: The GOP. They feel this urge to show they can Vote for a GOPer. They forget that GOP drags US down, that getting back up is an uphill battle.

What is can she be, she would not dare to stand up to Trump and tell him to cut off some of his B.S. behavior. It seem to me that Trump boss her, her opinion is Trump’s opinion.

    Wow.

    http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/05/18/dying-gop-senator-apologizes-to-muslims-for-donald-trump.html

Former GOP senator Bob Bennett lay partially paralyzed in his bed on the fourth floor of the George Washington University Hospital. He was dying.
Not 48 hours had passed since a stroke had complicated his yearlong fight against pancreatic cancer. The cancer had begun to spread again, necessitating further chemotherapy. The stroke had dealt a further blow that threatened to finish him off.
Between the hectic helter-skelter of nurses, doctors, and well wishes from a long-cultivated community of friends and former aides, Bennett faced a quiet moment with his son Jim and his wife Joyce.

It was not a moment for self-pity.

Instead, with a slight slurring in his words, Bennett drew them close to express a dying wish: “Are there any Muslims in the hospital?” he asked.
“I’d love to go up to every single one of them to thank them for being in this country, and apologize to them on behalf of the Republican Party for Donald Trump,” Bennett told his wife and son, both of whom relayed this story to The Daily Beast.

Though I really don’t think that the majority of the Republican Party would WANT him to apologize for that….

We all might have to answer for something on our death bed. I remember President Obama saying that when he’s on his death bed he wants to be surrounded by his family and not worrying about a piece of legislation.
