GM to Bob, Rikyrah and early risers. And to Nerdy, thank you lifting us up this morning and for carrying on for Chips in this sad time. The images you’ve brought us of our President and First Family have been an antidote to the fear, ugliness, sadness, ignorance and despair we’ve been seeing throughout the world. You’ve not only been keeping the doors open at TOD, you kept the light on. Bless you.

There can be no talks on Brexit before the UK formally begins the process to quit the EU, Germany’s government says.

The UK would be given a “reasonable amount of time”, but there must be no impasse, a spokesman said.

The leaders of Germany, France and Italy meet later in Berlin, with the speed of negotiations for Britain’s exit high on the agenda.

So the UK is between a rock and a hard place. If the Parliament decides that the cost of leaving the EU is too high to pay maybe they’ll act to override the referendum. It would be an act of political suicide for many MPs, but it would save the country and end the uncertainty. Of course, if British MPs are like those in US Congress, they’ll put their own necks above their love of country and nothing will get done.

“U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama — as well as her daughters and mother — will meet with Peace Corps Volunteers and Trainees on June 27. The purpose of her visit is to promote gender equality. Her Let Girls Learn drive is a White House initiative that seeks to expand educational opportunities for girls throughout the world. Female students will discuss the difficulties they face in getting an education when she visits a school in Smell No Taste.

Data from the Ministry of Education shows that the percentage of girls in schools decreases as they get older. Twice as many males ages 15 to 24 can read compared to females of the same age, according to UNICEF.

Many families believe education has no value for girls. Early marriage takes other girls out of school and puts them back in the home. Pregnancy transforms promising students into struggling mothers.”

Excerpt of Jesse Williams’ speech last night:

… “There has been no war that we have not fought and died on the front lines of. There is no job we haven’t done, there is no tax they haven’t levied against us, and we have paid all of them.

“But freedom is always conditional here. ‘You’re free!’ they keeping telling us. ‘But she would be alive if she hadn’t acted so… free.’ Now, freedom is always coming in the hereafter, but the hereafter is a hustle: We want it now.

“Let’s get a couple of things straight. The burden of the brutalized is not to comfort the bystander — that’s not our job so let’s stop with all that. If you have a critique for our resistance then you’d better have an established record, a critique of our oppression.

“If you have no interest in equal rights for black people then do not make suggestions to those who do: sit down.

“We’ve been floating this country on credit for centuries, and we’re done watching and waiting while this invention called whiteness uses and abuses us, burying black people out of sight and out of mind while extracting our culture, our dollars, our entertainment like oil — black gold! — ghettoizing and demeaning our creations and stealing them, gentrifying our genius and then trying us on like costumes before discarding our bodies like rinds of strange fruit.

“Just because we’re magic doesn’t mean we’re not real. Thank you.”

“Which is why this election doesn’t simply need to be a Democratic victory; it needs to be a Democratic landslide. I’m talking 360+ electoral votes for HRC. A flipped Senate. Significant gains in the House. It’s not enough to simply beat Donald Trump, he and his kind have to be destroyed. Forever. As in, the GOP needs to have such a resounding defeat that Reince Priebus hangs ’em up for good on November 9th. A party that has shifted so far to the right that it now exhibits all traits of fascism has no place in modern American politics. It is a party that needs to die and come back as something, anything, that resembles a viable conservative party. Because the Republican Party we have right now has officially jumped the shark. It still will get its 55 million votes come November 8th. But the party has done nothing at all to earn the vote of those 20 million undecided voters that will swing the election to either one side or the other.

And it’s up to all of us to remind those voters of this fact.”

    http://www.scotusblog.com/2016/06/the-final-three-cases-in-plain-english/

Voisine v. United States (argued February 29, 2016). – relates to possession of firearms after domestic violence conviction

McDonnell v. United States (argued April 27, 2016). Former Virginia governor Bob McDonnell is challenging his convictions (Some thoughts around that he may win)

Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt (argued March 2, 2016). This is a challenge to the constitutionality of two provisions of a Texas law regulating abortion in that state.

which is why she should stay IN THE SENATE:

If You Fail to Plan, Then You Plan to Fail
    by D.R. Tucker June 25, 2016 3:30 PM

Like my colleague David Atkins, I think a Hillary Clinton-Elizabeth Warren ticket would be a strong one for the national Democratic Party; on MSNBC this morning, Joy Reid also noted Warren’s merits as a running mate for Clinton. However, as a Massachusetts native, I cannot dismiss concerns that Warren’s departure from the Senate upon becoming Vice President would quickly become a disaster for the state Democratic Party.

Under current Massachusetts law, a special election to fill a vacant US House or Senate seat must be held at least 145 days (but not more than 160 days) after the seat becomes vacant. Between the time the vacancy commences and the day of the special election, the governor–in this case, Republican Charlie Baker–must appoint an interim US Senator.

In the two most recent Bay State US Senate vacancies (the passing of Ted Kennedy in 2009 and the resignation of John Kerry to become Secretary of State in 2013), the appointed interim Senators–former Democratic National Committee head Paul Kirk and prominent attorney Mo Cowan, respectively–agreed not to run for the office while serving as interim Senator. It is quite likely that Baker will also have his interim appointment agree not to run for the office–because Baker, highly popular in Massachusetts, will not be able to resist the urge to run for the seat himself.

This should scare progressives in Massachusetts; as I have previously noted, the state Democratic Party seems uninterested in confronting Baker on the more offensive aspects of his record, presumably due to his tremendous popularity. It is difficult to imagine the state party suddenly moving from legarthic to lithe when it comes to making the case against a Senate candidate Baker–and it is also difficult to imagine the national Democratic Party and/or progressive Super PACs doing enough damage to Baker to substantially diminish his popularity going into a special election.

Burying the Beast: Why the 2016 Election Needs to be a Democratic Landslide

    Trevor LaFauci June 26, 2016
There are two sides to every coin.

Over the past two weeks, I’ve been traversing Palm Beach County, Florida for a crash course in political organizing 101. I’ve been to multiple call banks, house parties, and voter registration events. I’ve met local officials and precinct leaders. I’ve sat in on a conference call led by Robby Mook. I’ve seen and heard strategy sessions regarding messaging, talking points, goals, and strategies for the general election campaign. I’ve made hundreds of phone calls in an effort to recruit both new and seasoned volunteers. I’ve seen staunch Democratic supporters open their homes to complete strangers to offer supporter housing. I’ve spoken with new organizers who quit their cushy jobs to join the campaign. I’ve seen veteran organizers who have been consistently working 70-hour weeks since last summer. I’ve seen a network of driven and dedicated Democrats who will do whatever it takes to elect Hillary Clinton as our 45th president.

But I’ve also seen the other side.

Given the court’s interpretation of official act, the district court’s jury instructions were erroneous, and the jury may have convicted Governor McDonnell for conduct that is not unlawful. Because the errors in the jury instructions are not harmless beyond a reasonable doubt, the Court vacates Governor McDonnell’s convictions.

Referendum outcome must be accepted, says David Cameron
    Posted at 20:07

Setting out what the vote means, and the next steps, David Cameron says the result was not the outcome he wanted “but there can be no doubt about the result”. Nevertheless, he says he stands by his warnings about the risk of leaving the EU, adding:

The decision must be accepted and the process of implementing the decision in the best possible way must now begin.”

The prime minister says there is also a “fundamental responsibility” to unite the country, as he condemns “despicable” abuse he says has been hurled at EU migrants since the result. “We will not stand for hate crime,” he adds.

He also offers assurances to EU nationals living here that there will be no immediate changes to their circumstances.
