Nerdy, please be safe this weekend. I am watching this storm also, have family in San Antonio. Will be sending prayers and thinking of all the people in those states most affected. (((hugs))).

  5. August 25, 2017 at 5:19 pm

    Thank you, Nerdy.

I’m feeling broken over this pure evil. I just can’t fathom how wicked one must be to order this:

  6. August 25, 2017 at 5:47 pm

Tomorrow, white supremacists are rallying in my city. Just got a long email from Indivisible SF. This is a small piece:

We’ve learned that law enforcement will be escorting the Patriot Prayer rally organizers and crew to their speaker location. There will be a 75-yard buffer zone between them and counter-protesters. However, there will be only one general entrance to the event, and other out-of-town attendees ― including white supremacists ― may be mixed in with our crowds. Again, there is serious risk of bodily harm as well as arrest (we do not have a permit). Please join us only if you are willing to accept these risks and are committed to nonviolence.

    • August 25, 2017 at 5:48 pm

      Ground rules
For the safety of all, we ask that everyone who comes agrees to follow the instructions of our leads and monitors without discussion. And to protect our members’ identity, we’re leaving branded Indivisible shirts, signs, etc. at home.

Please also review the restrictions for this event as outlined by the National Park Service, including:
No weapons, including guns, helmets, mace/pepper spray, clubs (sticks), torches, shields, and anything deemed to be a weapon
No backpacks larger than 18” by 14” by 7”
      No signs bigger than 36” x 24”
No signs or flags on poles (including we suspect cardboard tubes)
Water permitted only in sealed plastic bottles
      Volunteers needed
We still have a few spots for additional monitors, first aid personnel, and photographers. Sign up here if you have undergone training for these roles and want to volunteer.

They really want violence in your area because it is seen as very liberal/progressive. I hope that everyone who attends do not give them what they want, follow the example of the Civil Rights Elders, and show up in numbers.

    • August 25, 2017 at 6:13 pm

I live in the north nearby. I’ve been so sick with worry. For the pristine natural area trampled by bigots, for the safety of residents, for the god-awful views spewed by these haters, for the horrific potential for violence. SO RELIEVED.

I’m so glad this was cancelled. I don’t live in San Francisco any more, but did years ago, and hated to think of that beautiful area being trampled on by those horrible people. I am so old I remember going to Land’s End (don’t know if it is still called that) and watching the fleet return from the Korean Conflict. It was a giant thrill and very impressive watching those ships steam through the narrows and under the magnificent bridge. San Francisco was the sending port for the Korean War. In a touch of life’s irony…..I was in junior high, and when I met my soon to be husband, I learned he had sailed to Japan on an Army transport from San Francisco…….(we were 9 years apart)
The Korean war was very real to us on the west coast. We had dogtags which we had to wear every day for I.D., and each house had a designated house for an air raid shelter. In spite of all that, those years I lived there were magical.

Smartypants…speculated on where President Obama will return ans what role he would play…interesting read….

Let’s take those three things together: Obama doesn’t see himself as a rescuer, he has an unshakable optimism about the democratic process and he always plays the long game. What do you think that says about how he would answer Gopnik’s suggestion that he engage as the leader of the resistance? If you think it makes that possibility unlikely, then I agree with you.

I can imagine that Barack Obama very vividly feels the crisis that is presented by Donald Trump’s presidency. But I can also imagine that he sees beyond the person who occupies the White House and takes in the big picture of what led to his election in the first place (in the Electoral College if not the popular vote). He knows that the way forward is “through the hard and frustrating but necessary work of self-government.” Right now, this country’s level of civic participation is not up to the task. It might be enough to defeat Donald Trump, but not to repair the deeper issues that we face as a country. That is the challenge Barack Obama has taken on as his next task. I’ll be anxious to see how he tackles that one.

Cities and states are on their own. Those who live in prosperous areas will be okay, but the rest of us will suffer. No branch of the federal government is doing its job; our taxes are being used by plunderers, racists, and other opportunists, while we beg for education, affordable housing, healthcare, fair treatment, clean air and water, and safety. Government “by the people and for the people” is a dream that has yet to be realized in these so-called United States. The horrors of the last 7 months have shown all just how close we are to an authoritarian state. Those to whom we have given the power to act in our behalf refuse to do so. What is left? Will the evangelists, the white supremacists, and the 0.5 percent that control most of the nation’s wealth get what they want? Will they turn on each other because some of their aims are contradictory? Whatever their aims, everyone who does not fall into these groups are at risk. What do we do about this; do we go like lambs to our own slaughter? What many naïve people thought “never in America” is here.

The world is much bigger than Twitter and most A-A voters, especially the reliable older ones are not hanging out there and are not the kind of weak ignorant people who can be swayed by this type of slander. They know that there are liberals and progressives who are racist, like they know that they are being g used by the Democratic party. Important point here….

    https://www.buzzfeed.com/adriancarrasquillo/latinos-dont-think-trump-understands-what-an-arpaio-pardon?utm_term=.xd92Lx2Pn#.fndjVvj93

But Latino Republicans and Democrats say Trump, who views life and politics as a scoreboard of wins and losses, simply doesn’t understand the gravity of what an Arpaio pardon would mean in Arizona.

Hispanic conservatives who spoke to BuzzFeed News this week continually made the argument that their moral and political high ground would be wiped away if Trump, by choosing to pardon Arpaio, discards the Republican refrain that they support certain policies because of the rule of law.

“A pardon of Joe Arpaio is only good if he pardons the 11 million who are here, if he shows the same grace,” said Daniel Garza, the executive director of the Koch brothers-led LIBRE Initiative. “I don’t think he deserves it, this guy violated the law to violate the rights of individuals.”

“For Trump supporters who talk negatively about amnesty, it sure seems they are OK with it when it’s one of their own,” said Ruben Alvarez, cofounder of Molera Alvarez and a 25-year Republican veteran of Arizona politics.

Artemio Muniz, chair of the Texas Federation of Hispanic Republicans, who opposed Trump during the campaign but said he wants him to succeed as president, said an Arpaio pardon would lay bare the problem between the Republican Party and Hispanic voters, the majority of whom are Mexican-American.

“It seems as though conservatives say, ‘Rule of law for me, but not for you. Opportunity for us, but not for you. Amnesty for Arpaio, but not for the hard-working,'” he said.

    • 148 desertflower
      August 26, 2017 at 10:54 am

The OTHER SIDE of the coin.

Democratic groups and activists are already preparing to go full blast if Arpaio is pardoned. The Latino Victory Project, which works to get Hispanics elected, is rallying Latino leaders to make a forceful statement if the pardon happens, and told BuzzFeed News it will work to get state charges brought against Arpaio.

While the president actually has enormous power to pardon whoever he wants, the power is generally meant to only address federal criminal cases, not state-level cases and civil cases.

January Contreras, a Latina former Obama official who is running for attorney general in Arizona against Republican incumbent Mark Brnovich, told BuzzFeed News she would consider all options against Arpaio if elected next year, making it clear a pardon could become a significant statewide campaign issue.

“All elected leaders, including Attorneys General, have a duty to uphold the law and hold people accountable,” she said in an email. “If I were elected to serve the people of Arizona, and Sheriff Arpaio was pardoned, I would want to consider all of the options on the table.”

Arizona Democratic Party spokesperson Enrique Gutiérrez said some candidates are using the threat of an Arpaio pardon to recruit supporters and cast the possible pardon as one that would “empower anti-Latino and anti-immigrant groups” and “be a pardon to white supremacy.”

    Good morning, TODville.

Didn’t sleep much last night. Between the horrific hurricane and worry about the safety of our fellow Americans and their families and the sickening pardon of one of the most racist and vile creeps who ever walked this earth, I am horrified. We’ve known of Trump’s hatred of Latinos since day one when he came down that escalator and started this whole shit show, but each day Trump takes this nation to a whole new craven depth of insanity. The more I read about how much AZ has suffered under the hand of this barbarian Arpaio, the more sickened I feel that this is where we are now. The fact that the disgusting GOP does nothing but tsk tsk tsk makes me insane. Even just a passing familiarity with what Arpaio has done is enough to choke anyone with any sense of decency. This is the vision Trump has for the “rule of law” and what should be allowed for prisons. How much more damage must we suffer? How much is too much?

You may have heard that the white supremacist rally scheduled for today in SF has been cancelled. The city had banned ANY sort of object that could be used as a weapon – guns, knives, sticks, etc etc etc, – which the Nazi group likely found completely objectionable. I personally think this is why they cancelled. All police had been called to duty and there was a formalized process to gain access to the designated rally area. Nearby businesses and restaurants in the Presidio were going to close. Public transportation had been completely rerouted and notices sent that roads would be closed, traffic and busses were not going anywhere near the event. A lot of effort went into trying to minimize the danger posed by these losers. I got notices from Indivisible SF on detailed nonviolent strategies to follow. Then, I was SO happy to hear the event had been cancelled.

BUT…….BUT now it looks like they’re trying to pull a fast one and everyone here is still very worried. Yes, they cancelled their original rally, which was approved by the feds in a very pristine area on the water near the GG Bridge. But now they’ve cancelled this and are saying they’re going to have a “press conference” in Alamo Square. This is a a much smaller area, a park in the middle of a residential neighborhood in the city and closer to where the counter demonstrations have been planned. They have not obtained a permit to do this and many are worried that this is a call to action for an unstructured melee…….It’s a complete bait and switch. The city is responding quickly but I dread what the day will bring. I know there will be many other demonstrations going on throughout the city so I do think there will be a show a force for good……..I just hope there is NO VIOLENCE……..

” We’ve known of Trump’s hatred of Latinos since day one when he came down that escalator and started this whole shit show”

Exactly. How could even a single latino be a turd’s fan? Boggles the mind.

There don’t seem to be enough hours in the day for all the prayers to be said for all of this. Stay safe, meta, and anyone else in SF, Berkeley tomorrow, other cities in the US where these demonstrations are happening, everyone in AZ, except Arpaio, and everyone along the Texas gulf. I am trying to hold onto that light mentioned above, but on days like this it seems an unsurmountable task.
