Rep. Gabrielle Giffords talked with President Barack Obama on Sunday, the one-year anniversary of a southern Arizona shooting rampage that left her and 12 others wounded and six people dead.

The congresswoman will be among those marking the somber occasion by attending a vigil Sunday night on University of Arizona’s campus, one of several such memorial events in recent days.

…. Obama called Giffords on Sunday “to offer his support” and say that she, other shooting victims and the Tucson community are “in their daily thoughts and prayers,” the White House said in a statement.

“The president expressed amazement at the courage and determination Rep. Giffords has shown along her incredible road to recovery, calling her an inspiration to his family and Americans across the country,” the statement added.

They do not want Mitt to be exposed to the public as a job killer. The media will protect Mitt, if he is the nominee in the fall, when the Obama Campaign starts airing him out for his lies and job killing.

What you stated is exactly why I am not understanding many people suggesting that the WH is afraid to go against Mitt Romney. There is a high poverty rate and unemployment rate now, and I just don’t see how people would vote for Mitt with his Bain Capital record. I actual think when these contenders currently the turnout on the GOP side might be low in the fall. However, it’s just Jan. and 3rd candidates are going to spring up in the Spring.

The media has always said that Mitt is a tougher challenger for Pres. O. Pundits on CNN, ABC, MSNBC, et al. have suggested that the WH would prefer not to face Mitt in the final. Donna Brazil said the same thing after one of the debates last year.

Once and for all let us put to rest this B.S. about the White House being afraid to go against Mitt “the flip flopper liar” Romney. If President Obama was not afraid to take on Bill and Hillary Clinton, the Clinton Machine, how the hell do anyone think he is scared of Mitt Romney? Bill Clinton was an ex-President with people supporting him all across the map, Hillary was a ex-First Lady and a Senator who was thought alot of. And the same media who is pushing this B.S. about the WH being afraid to take on Romney, were out there ordaining Hillary, President Hillary. This funny name Senator from Chicago had no chance against the Clinton Machine. But he went up against that machine and won! So believe me when I say this the WH does not fear Mitt the flip flopper liar Romney.

TUCSON, Ariz (Reuters) - Bells rang across Tucson early Sunday marking the exact time last year the city was rocked by a deadly shooting spree that left Representative Gabrielle Giffords gravely wounded.

Bells ringing at 10:11 a.m. local time, the moment of the January 8, 2025 shooting, were among the first of a day of remembrance events for survivors and Tucson residents across the city.

Giffords, an Arizona Democrat, made a surprise visit late on Saturday to the grocery store where a pistol-toting gunman pumped bullet after bullet into a crowd gathered for her congressional outreach meeting a year ago.

Am reposting this here since I need feedback

    ——-

    Greetings Everyone

I am building a web page we can use for short – sweet – and to the points factoids for promoting PBO and knocking down GOP lies.

It is not done (lots of blank spaces) but I wanted to show it to everyone and get their feedback.

So often I see folks post a question about “what do I tell my neighbor about …….?” or “how do i counter this twitter attack”

Folks in my OFA group often ask the same thing, a simple group of sentences they can use to make their case.

I have links to resources from folks here (Tien Le), links to OFA, some talking points that I keep getting in my mailbox from OFA and various other stuff.

I would like to redo almost all of the existing talking points, am hoping to get email from OFA on this or help from the folks here.

Please offer suggestions for what to add. I was thinking of making a link to tweets for the various subjects, but would need content from someone here.

Whatever is included I want it to be short 1-2 clicks from the page to the info.

Thanks to Tien Le for “inspiration” on the page name – Toolkit

    http://www.whatisworking.com/2012/01/election-toolkit-for-50-states.html

Post your feedback below or send me an email. If anyone wants to help with talking points, tweet material, or general editing please let me know.

I received it also. I hope that they will make it available in bulk; I’d love to be able to give a copy to those folks I speak with. During the ’08 primary, Veterans for Obama funded a similar card. At the polls in November I had a conversation with a republican WWII vet — (1) he voted McCain in ’08; (2) he still has the card I gave him in April ’08 and has been checking it off as the President takes action; (3) he’s voting PBO ’12; says the repub candidates “ain’t worth spit.”

    The GOP debate
If tonight’s debate has accomplished nothing else, it has demonstrated, beyond any last slim thread of doubt, that Texas Governor Rick Perry is criminally stupid. He would, he said, send American troops back into Iraq, today, so as to rebuff Iranian influence there — which arose, of course, because we went in to begin with. Perry’s neoconservative solution is to crank it all back up again; keep U.S. militarism going indefinitely in Afghanistan; and launch entirely fresh offensive efforts in Iran — all while complaining about outrageous federal deficits.

That’s not just stupid. It’s criminally stupid.

p.s. Same holds true for Santorum. He just informed us there are no socioeconomic “classes” in America, which will come as something of a surprise to the socioeconomic classes presently at each other’s throats.

    Is Mitt Romney Dodging Taxes?
Posted on 01/08/2025 at 4:00 pm by JM Ashby

The short answer is — we don’t know for sure. Because Mitt Romney is refusing to release his tax returns, we are left to speculate based on what is publicly available, and what is publicly available suggests he very well may be.

    CBS reports:

Even if Mitt Romney isn’t dodging taxes entirely, it’s more than likely he is paying a capital gains tax rate of roughly only 15%, far below your typical teacher or police officer.

    Another Day in Scott Walkerstan
Posted on 01/07/2025 at 4:30 pm by JM Ashby

When Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin introduced his anti-union, anti-collective bargaining legislation in early 2011, Walker made the strategic decision of exempting police and firefighters from the new rules. Many police precincts and fire houses joined their fellow unionized brethren in protest anyway however, and apparently they did so for good reason.

It turns out a loophole in Scott Walker’s legislation has granted local governments the power to effectively blackmail the supposedly-exempted police and firefighters unions into paying more for their pensions.

Wisconsin police and firefighters were supposed to escape higher pension and health care costs imposed on other public workers through Gov. Scott Walker’s contentious collective bargaining law. But the state’s largest police union says local governments statewide have found another way to make them pay up: threaten huge health insurance cost increases if they don’t start contributing to their retirement funds.

    Rick Perry Shows His Ass
    by BooMan
Sat Jan 7th, 2012 at 10:59:12 AM EST

Way back when, during his first debate appearance, Gov. Rick Perry said something to the effect that you would have to be heartless to discriminate against a kid who was applying to enter the Texas university system just because their parents brought them into the country illegally. This created an instant “not-hating-Latinos-for-Jesus-enough” problem for Perry, and his poll numbers dropped like a stone. So far, aided by actual debate gaffes, his numbers have not recovered. So, how about a bold move that says fuck-you to the Latino community louder than anything else could?

Three weeks ago, the Justice Department released the results of its three-year investigation into Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s office, finding rampant lawbreaking and massive civil rights violations against Latinos. In addition, it was recently revealed that the Arizona sheriff failed to investigate over 400 sex crimes during his tenure, including multiple instances of child molestation, leading Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) to say he was “outraged” by Arpaio’s negligence. Apparently untroubled by the allegations, Rick Perry today announced that Arpaio will serve as his presidential campaign’s Arizona state chairman.

Rick Perry’s campaign will have probably folded its tents before he ever gets to Arizona, so this is more of a signal to the voters of South Carolina and Florida. It’s becoming clear that most of the Republican candidates believe that they will benefit by saying and doing racially insensitive things. I don’t remember this really being the case in recent presidential elections. And even when I have noticed racial language being used inappropriately, it’s been surrogates doing the talking. Suffice to say that Rick Perry has obliterated one of the two things he’s done during this campaign that made me like him. The other was his defense of inoculating girls against HPV.

So many lives changed forever, and a young, bright, energetic girl gone by a madman’s rampage. As we try to heal and move ahead and find our way forward after this, as the AZ legislature convenes tomorrow, they will bring up allowing guns on college campus’.We have not learned anything in a year’s time. What will it take?

Romney’s fortune was gained by destroying other people lives. His comments today in the debate regarding Kennedy mortgaging his house to beat him showed his privileged way of thinking.
:D Just think, the Republican establishment delighted in the ruling….but little could they know or foresee that this decision may play a part in bringing down the establishment candidate (Romney) once this 27 min video is released.

Below is a brief summary of why the Citizens United case made its way to the Supreme Court.

Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, 558 U.S. 08-205 (2010), 558 U.S. ––––, 130 S.Ct. 876 (January 21, 2025), was a landmark decision by the United States Supreme Court holding that the First Amendment prohibits government from placing limits on independent spending for political purposes by corporations and unions. The 5–4 decision originated in a dispute over whether the non-profit corporation Citizens United could air a film critical of Hillary Clinton, and whether the group could advertise the film in broadcast ads featuring Clinton’s image, in apparent violation of the 2002 Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act, commonly known as the McCain–Feingold Act in reference to its primary Senate sponsors.[2]

I just want to say one more thing about Gabby Giffords. She has the most incredible, loving, and supportive husband in Mark Kelly. He is her rock and guiding star. The love they share is deep. I just think that he deserves the hugs of a grateful nation for standing strong for his wife. Protecting her privacy and being there through thick and thin, through this very difficult time. The fact that he was in space when this happened to her, well….I can’t even wrap my head around how hard that would be.

But Jesus forgave him because he became Catholic. Do whatever you want and then be redeemed.

I’m a seriously lapsed Jew but one thing I always liked about Jewish thought: you screw up with God, that’s what Yom Kippur is for. you screw up against your fellow man, go make that right on your own. God is not your intermediary. Face your transgressions like a thinking human being.

      • 86 jacquelineoboomer
        January 8, 2025 at 6:37 pm

Of course, Gingrich and Santorum aren’t really representative of Catholics in this country, due to their extremist views and the way they act and live their lives, and the way they expound on and interpret Catholic virtues isn’t identical to how most American Catholics in the pews see their religion. One of the biggest teachings of the Catholic church - received directly from the message of Jesus, if you are a believer - is about social justice and never forgetting the poor and downtrodden, the least of these. Again, Gingrich and Santorum don’t follow those principles. They’re pretty much one of a kind - or two of a kind.

And asking for God’s forgiveness is much more complicated than Gingrich has seemed to make it. For instance, you also have to intend in your heart that you don’t plan on doing what you are asking forgiveness for, again. And it’s not a clean slate unless you mean that. That would leave Newt out. Again, much more complicated than I described, but this is the gist. Catholics also know that all of this is based on the gift of blind faith, not science.

These two candidates are just one of the reasons we should leave religion out of politics. They don’t represent me or my religion, that’s for sure.

I am a seriously lapsed Christian, mainly because I’ve found a great deal of good in all religions. Nevertheless, what you wrote about Jewish thought makes perfect sense to me. I am just so sick and tired of some of the holier than thou right wing Christians who routinely judge and condemn others, but are quick to ask for forgiveness when their own sinful ways are exposed. Gingrich had no qualms championing the impeachment of President Clinton over sexual infidelity while he himself was engaged in similar transgression. I am equally tired of pious people who champion the Lord’s prayer in schools and posting the Ten Commandments in Court housed while they routinely violate the prayer which calls on us to treat other people the way we would like to be treated; and one of the commandment, which forbids us from lying.

    totally O.T. but……

can someone explain to me after 30 years of PC’s, why we can’t just hit a button and have everything sync when we set up a new computer?

this old broad is really losing it over transferring stuff from the old computer and/or a backup. I’ve been at this task for a week and I really have to get back to my consulting job tomorrow and I’m still not up to speed.

PC Mover sounds great — except you’re disconnected from any firewalls and anti-virus and on my creaky connection it’s going to take 14 hours for a few programs and yes, 7 years of documents and photos.

And then there’s my sweet [almost] 72 year old husband who is learning the computer. I’m proud as hell of him but the QUESTIONS. and the “what the hell did you do?” without sounding angry or unsupportive.

Methinks wine is the only way to get through the rest of the night. Lots of wine.

I run three small businesses from this computer. I just tried to clean up files and don’t know what the hell I’m doing. It’s nothing anyone can do for me, I have to figure it out myself. I’m drained and exhausted and have to face my boss tomorrow and I’m just not ready.

Amazing how fast stress can return to our lives…….

Okay, back to politics. You guys don’t need my angst.

Local Chgo news just showed Rahm responding to questions about “the book”. They first aired a clip of Rahm and Michelle laughing together and getting along great when she came to Chgo to help him bring attention to “food deserts”, areas where there have been no grocery stores, and promoting Walgreens, I believe, coming to the rescue with fresh foods now being sold in their stores in those neighborhoods. Rahm, in his usual brash manner, said he “never reads those books”, but he said he was very proud to have worked for the President and First Lady, he considered them close friends, he recently attended a private party with them and talked to the president yesterday. And I saw that Michelle’s former communication director, Camille Johnston, said that although she could not deny the reported incidents, their importance was greatly exaggerated in the book with many incidents going back to the early growing pains of 2008. And Axelrod also did not deny anything in the book, but he also agreed that the reporting was greatly exaggerated, that a couple little misunderstandings, or conflicts, which happen all the time in every kind of workplace were blown out of proportion. All saying the same—-much ado about almost nothing.

And then, just as I finished writing the above, Lester Holt comes on with the NBC national news and opens the broadcast with “Bombshell book! What is really going on in the White House?” Our national media—-will say anything and everything to promote conflict. And it seems they are more than willing to say anything which may be hurtful to the Obamas. No one bothers to dig for the truth any more. They just blast away. Big sigh!

The Chgo Sun Times Lynn Sweet has a new column re. the book. So far, from the early releases, it seems the whole book concentrates mostly on Michelle. Maybe because Sweet was concentrating on the Chgo parts, but she goes into all this stuff that’s in there that will likely cause a few more ripples——Valerie Jarrett was Daley’s Chief of Staff and hired Michelle—-that Michelle didn’t like that three white Irish families held all the power in the city and state for generations—Daleys, Hynes and Madigans— that when Jarrett, who was close to Daley but was still let go, this enforced this anger and that they then recruited Obama friend, Marty Nesbitt, to run for mayor—who obviously ended up not running against Rahm. This supposedly is the origin of Michelle not liking the president surrounded by a small insular crew. (Valerie Jarrett is never more than an arms length away tho) But—-lots of entanglements and complexities. The most perplexing thing of all is that friends Eric Whitaker and Marty Nesbitt, Jarrett and Gibbs were all said to have given multiple hours of interviews to the author.

“The movie, called “King of Bain, When Mitt Romney Came to Town,” has not been distributed, but has been viewed by ABC News. It was made by former Romney supporters and intersperses interviews with some workers who blame Romney’s company for losing their jobs with ominous music. At one point it focuses on K.B. Toys, which made money for Bain even as it closed stores.”

The film was made by Jason Killian Meath, a former associate of Romney’s top strategists, Stuart Stevens and Russ Schriefer. Meath had worked for the Romney campaign in 2008, creating much of the ad content for that failed effort. He left Stevens and Schriefer’s firm, SSG, in 2010. Meath declined to comment on his project, referring inquiries to the pro-Gingrich PAC Winning Our Future.

WTH does he mean by that!!!!SMH ..me thinks Christie has a hot temper…

EXETER, New Hampshire—New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie wasn’t going to allow Occupy Wall Street protesters to heckle his speech in support of Mitt Romney here, instead he fired back.

As they shouted “Christie Kills Jobs” he shouted over them, saying “Really?”

He added that Mitt Romney was correct that the protesters have the right to protest, but had a message of his own to share with them

“Somebody’s going down tonight, but it ain’t going to be jobs, sweetheart,” he said.

It’s unclear whether he meant that the protesters would be arrested or something else.

The protesters were escorted out by Romney security as well as local police officers.

    About that book……ANother shoe drops

Alice in Wonderland Halloween party was no secret, W.H. says

A White House official told POLITICO Sunday that a Halloween party thrown for military families in 2009 was no secret and that there was no conspiracy to cover-up the role of two well-known Hollywood figures.

In her new book “The Obamas,” Jodi Kantor reports that the White House communications staff was concerned about the optics of the Obamas hosting a star-studded ‘Alice in Wonderland’-themed Halloween party in a time of economic misery. As a result, Kantor reports, they did not highlight the role that director Tim Burton and actor Johnny Depp played at the event. Burton helped decorate the White House for the party, while Depp attended in costume as the Mad Hatter.

“This was an event for local school children from the Washington DC area and for hundreds of military families. If we wanted this event to be a secret, we probably wouldn’t have invited the press corps to cover it, release photos of it to Flickr, or post a video from it on the White House website,” White House spokesman Eric Schultz said in a statement. “Even Johnny Depp’s fan new about it and posted on their website. Just goes to show you can’t believe everything you read in books these days.”

The official White House social media releases and the reporter pool dispatches from the party do not mention either Burton or Depp, but the Depp fan site JohnnyDeppNews.com reported that the actor was in attendance with Burton. And the Nashville Tennessean also reported that both Depp and Burton were at the White House for the party. Then-White House press secretary Robert Gibbs addressed the event in his briefing, but did not go into any detail.

I went to flickr and saw no less than 5 pictures of the party. Some people would sell their soul for a buck.

Star studded, the onle stars name I heard was Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. But you notice how Kantor tries to make like the Obamas hide the Halloween Party, they keep it under raps, once again you see how she lied, twisted the truth, just to make things seem worse. The party was for military families and local D.C. school children. I am more convince the piece of trash written by Kantor is nothing but a hack job.

Watched ABC News tonight….the only mention about the book was the Wonderland party, but they said it was for children of servicemen, and the White House didn’t want a “Hollywood” type party to get big press during the recession. Obviously that last part was false, since most people knew about it.
The big problem the Republicans have had with this administration is that there have been NO scandals. Think back to all the other presidencies recently….BIG scandals…..but nothing for the opposition to get hold of in this one. And there won’t be, so they are trying retroactively to stir things up. As the HP commenters say: So What! The book is obviously half truths, some “truths” ginned up for color, and as W Shakespeare so admirably put it: “Much ado about nothing!” The public will find the Republican circus more entertaining, and this will have a short life. Probably Morning Joke will ride this horse tomorrow, but everyone knows him.
The author’s info is THREE years old…..a life time in politics. Ho-hum. She should find something productive to do, like maybe investigating homelessness and poverty, and working to eradicate those!!!

I am saying a special prayer for all the families affected by the shootings in Arizona a year ago. I can’t imagine the pain and suffering they have endured and the pain they will continue to bear for many years to come. I am so very sorry for your loss and wish you every blessing as you continue to cope with the loss of a loved one. Thank God for those who survived and continue to deal with the scars left by the horrendous event.
I am so impressed with the way President Obama and Mrs. Obama have handled their condolences to those involved from the very beginning. They have both shown sincere empathy and tried to be as supportive as possible. We are so lucky to have President and Mrs. Obama and I wish them every success as they campaign for reelection. They have worked tirelessly and deserve to have four more productive years.
