If last night represents intelligent discourse in the Republican world, then this picture could have had all 6 of them together and the pose would be the same. Now, whoever the Republican nominee is will get 40-45% of the vote at a minimum. And, when you think about it, that is a pretty sad statement about the state of this country.

Sad state of affairs that continues the same from the years Republicans voted for Geo. W. Bush, who acted criminally, totally embarrassed us around the world and almost irreparably divided our country.

Good Morning Everyone. ! I just want to put this out there because I am a Book TV addict…..This was on last night and I have to say that it could have been filmed today…as it is EXACTLY what we are going through right now……

Political science professors Paul Brace and Barbara Hinckley sat down in 1992 to discuss the effect of opinion polling on the Oval Office. In “Follow the Leader,” the co-authors chronicle the influence of polling on presidential administrations from Harry Truman to George H.W. Bush.

    Morning TOD crew!

So I’ve been sampling assessments of yesterday’s debate and the broad consensus seems to be that the non-Mitt Romney’s threw purposely threw the debate.

It amazes me that these cutthroats are so loyal to the GOP that they’d throw a fight for Mitt to win but I can’t explain why none of them really went after him. Either they really want to be vice-President or the powers-that-be in the GOP have very thick incriminating files on all of them.

My expectations are really low for today’s debate on Meet the Press, largely because of yesterday’s limp performance and because presumably it will be moderated by David Gregory, who is allergic to follow-up questions.

Soooooo,. According to some poll conducted by Sunday Morning, the three most charistsmic presidents are Clinton, Kennedy, and Reagan. In the entire piece there was barely a mention of PBO. There was one line as part of the idea that no one is charismatic all of the time and when some so-called expert said that when the president lifts his chin to make a point in a speech, that he is looking down on everyone and that is why he is thought of as arrogant. WTF! Who are these people? Are they willfully blind to the love, admiration, and out-right adoration that people all over the world feel for him? He has inspired people who had never before cared about politics to become involved. His words and actions have helped to usher changes in the Arab world that seemed impossible. I could go on, but I’ll stop here; you all know how the polls and the so-called experts do not tell the real story of this president and the people who support him.
BTW the pie e also mentioned that charisma can be learned and that there are classes for it. You can bet that Mitt has tried this; however, if so, it has not worked. He was described as fake.

CBS Sunday Morning is airing a segment about the role of charisma in politics—-very interesting. They were deep into the bit before they got to President Obama, which I couldn’t believe because I believe he is the most charismatic politician ever. Example 1A. And so they finally showed Obama with that big beaming smile with the crowd responding, but then the “charisma expert” said Obama had charisma during the campaign but lost a little of it as he got into the rigors of governing and that he makes the mistake of raising his chin when speaking and it makes him look like he’s speaking down and subtracts from his charisma. Now this is nitpicking, but I have noticed that too and I think it’s a reflexive defensive gesture, given his life experience, but it sure does not detract for me or for all the crowds at all the Obama events I’ve observed. I think of all the joyous looks on all the faces there, arms reaching out to President Obama, compared to the crowds at the Repub candidates’ events where grumpy looking people are sitting there with their arms folded. They talked about Romney too, saying he tries to have charisma, to be able to relate, to do the aw shucks bit, but it always looks fake, like he’s trying too hard, does not come naturally. They admitted that personality wins elections—-with 76% saying that charisma and personality are important in their voting choice, which I’ve always believed—-that in the end most people vote for the candidate they like the best, simple as that. President Obama has that magnetic personality, that gift, where you are immediately fascinated, cannot look away. Charisma Squared.

But as Ceb indicated, PBO was not even in the top 3 according their slanted poll with ZERO face validity. Obama is head and shoulders in charisma above Reagan, Clinton, and yes even Kennedy. In addition to the charisma, he has the CHARACTER to match. In my opinion, this is just another thinly veiled media attempt to suggest to voters in 2012 that “Obama ain’t all that.” It’s BULLSHYTE.

Let me say upfront: Obama is the most charismatic president in my lifetime (I’m 61). But even if he weren’t I’d rather have less charisma and better policies. Much of the damage we now have to contend with was caused by Clinton: telecommunication bill, Nafta. The tax increase was the first and last effective policy he enacted. )

The best thing to do is to erase these nonsense points from your memory as soon as you hear them. What happens is that subconsciously, the next time you see the President raise his chin, you’re going to register that as “arrogant”, despite what you know to be true. And the next time again, it will be reinforced. These ideas seep in, and the more we watch this nonsense, the more it seeps in.

These people know how to use repeated ideas psychologically to almost brainwash people into thinking what they want, and I’ve heard that negative ideas have more of an impact than positive ideas. You have to consciously tell yourself that they are attempting to influence you, and when you see President Obama’s chin go up, make a point of giving it another emotional meaning. When I see his chin go up, I’m going to imagine him pulling in strength to continue, almost like he’s drawing in the positive feedback as reinforcement of his idea which is making him stand taller. Send him good vibes whenever you see him lift his chin, because it will add to the good energy he’s drawing in. When you’re speaking publicly, they always tell you to stand with your legs slightly apart and your pelvis tilted slightly forward and shoulders back, because it helps you breathe better and keeps you calmer. I’m going to mentally add this chin tilt as another tip for speaking better because it lets more air flow through your throat - because we all know President Obama is a master at public speaking.

Thank you, theo67, points well made indeed, and Dave made an excellent point just a little above this one, so thank you Dave as well! I feel this so-called lifted chin, which is completely natural to PBO, is a mechanism which activates a part of the brain connected to intuition. Often we see still shots of PBO in contemplation, or prayer, and his chin is held perfectly in balance with his neck and shoulders, and the air around him is energized with inspiration, as if he is listening, absorbing and processing information all at the same time. Those photos are indicative of a man who is wholly contained within himself, with a capacity to allow his inspiration to pass beyond to others. This is a rare quality in humans, we should see it as evolution of human awareness.

Excellent advice! By the way, didn’t a speech professor in Australia suggest that Australian politicians need to study President Obama’s speaking style? I know I read this some place, but I can’t remember where.

    • 123 Obama Grandmama
      January 8, 2025 at 2:32 pm

In a way charisma encompasses authenticity and compassion or relating to others. It is hard to fake and when it is not genuine it shows. I have never seen a President in my 65 years with as much charisma as our current president. I always had the feeling Bill Clinton would say or do anything for your approval. Kennedy did have charisma but his short life in office and less time on tv than now did not give you enough time to actually know for sure.

    • 125 nathkatun7
      January 8, 2025 at 7:16 pm

“Example 1A. And so they finally showed Obama with that big beaming smile with the crowd responding, but then the “charisma expert” said Obama had charisma during the campaign but lost a little of it as he got into the rigors of governing and that he makes the mistake of raising his chin when speaking and it makes him look like he’s speaking down and subtracts from his charisma.”

My question to the “charisma expert”: How does a charismatic person loose his charisma? All this business about the President raising his chin is absolute nonsense! So does this “charisma expert” contend that the President has changed his speaking style from the way he spoke during the campaign? My other question: What are the criteria for becoming a “charisma expert?”

May be it’s my lack of expertise, but I always thought that charisma in politics was all about inspiring people to believe your leadership as well as arousing genuine popular enthusiasm for your leadership. I never knew it had something to do with not raising your chin. I suppose Clinton’s wagging his finger and Reagan cocking his chin are all evidence of charisma. I wish people would come out and say exactly what the mean: they just can’t stand to see a smart, self confident and inspiring Black man, serving effectively as President of the United States. All this “nitpicking” is simply for the purpose of hiding their real motives.

I originally thought Huntsman could be formidable, but as soon as he sponsored the Ryan plan, I knew he was no more formidable than the rest of the clown car. He has enough negatives that would stump him with the extreme right wing electorate: he’s Mormon, he has two “foreign” adopted daughters, he speaks Mandarin, he’s worked for President Obama - all of these would be positives or non-issues on the Democratic side, but they’re non-starters with the crazies on the right. Plus, he’s got his weaknesses that wouldn’t sell to the general electorate, such as his company’s dubious business dealings with Iran, his screeching support of Sarah Palin in 2008, his weak physical stamina. And, he’s apparently more conservative than Romney, so policy by policy, we would find out a lot of positions that are founded in the traditional failed policies of the GOP.

Personally, I think if the election can somehow be elevated to a straight-on policy discussion, then we’ll finally be able to get to a comparison election of the proper role of government. Much to the chagrin of the self-proclaimed progressive base, the PL, President Obama has stayed squarely in the middle of the political divide. Not being too radical, basing much of his legislation on things that have been supported in the past by the Republican party. I think that all these moves were to position him favourably for this election, and to point out the current extreme nature of the GOP. They won’t even support a health care bill that they proposed as an alternative to Clinton’s plan back in the 90′s. They won’t support cap & trade that they previously sponsored. They won’t support tax cuts to the middle class. They won’t support any immigration reform, yet one of their own - McCain - sponsored such a bill in the past. President Obama hasn’t been anti-war, he’s been smarter than the GOP with regards to war, at less cost and with less impact to human soldiers - plus, he’s got a whole slew of victories to tally (including endorsements and praise from the military commanders). It will be very interesting to see a straight policy debate, based on the fact that President Obama has stole all their policy positions for himself. Even if their “best” players were on the field - Jeb, Christie, Daniels, Thune - they would all be playing off the same playbook, and they’d have to defend the actions of the tea partiers in Congress, who were willing to make the US a deadbeat nation.

Huntsman keeps boasting of wanting a flat tax like he says he put in while in Utah as the governor. What I read about the flat tax is it is the most regressive tax being totally unfair to the people on the lower end of the pay scale.

Love Romney using North Dakota as an example of employment —- North Dakota has approximately 650k residents — almost flat for 20 yrs —about 4.5% growth over last 10 yrs. 90% land used for ranching and farming; 50% employment in agriculture. Energy spending (including wind energy investment) has generated the modest increase in North Dakota’s population and contributed to low unemployment. So, two highly subsidized industries contribute to majority of North Dakota economy…. Great example Romney!

    • 189 Cathy from MN

The latest Suffolk University overnight tracking poll of the New Hampshire primary shows Mitt Romney ticking down to 35 percent, and Rick Santorum falling to fifth place.

    From the press release:

Romney dropped 4 percentage points overnight to 35 percent. The former Massachusetts governor still holds a 15 point lead, but his margin has declined by 8 percentage points since last Tuesday, when 43 percent of likely Republican voters backed Romney.

Romney is followed by Paul (20 percent), Huntsman (11 percent), Newt Gingrich (9 percent) and Santorum, who dropped another point to 8 percent overnight. Rick Perry and Buddy Roemer each had 1 percent with 15 percent undecided.

If Huntsman finishes third, the media will make it the big story out or New Hampshire. And to be fair, it will be news. Romney’s campaign must be a little nervous now. I’ve been wondering for weeks if Romney is as “inevitable” as everyone says and if New Hampshire could change everything. That’s the reason why I’ve been concerned about the attacks on Romney: I didn’t want for him to be weakened too soon, before New Hampshire.

I would prefer my President be re-elected based on his accomplishments and intelligence, rather than because his opponent is a whacko. I would not be able to deal with the repeal of Obamacare (I actually like that name as it gives him credit for the program). Also the closer the race is the more chance for the suppressive voter rights agenda and cheating ways of the GOP to be benefitted. However if it is an all out crazy and we cannot counter the GOP tricks to steal the election I’d hate that more. Guess I’m wishy washy seeing both sides just like Charlie Brown (sigh).

“I happened to see my dad run for governor when he was 54 years old,” Romney said. “He had good advice to me. He said never get involved in politics if you have to win election to pay a mortgage. If you find yourself in a position when you can serve, you ought to have a responsibility to do so if you think you can make a difference, and don’t get involved in politics when your kids are still young because it may turn their heads.”

Sounds like they purposely pick sunday morning low viewership to test out Romney ‘get tough’ questions. They have to fatten him up (so to speak) in prep of going against PBO. Because lets face it, he’s the one they are running and if they have to find lost votes every step of the way to make it happen so be it.

So now we know where the real power in the GOP lies. There are the 3 faces represented by these candidates (I use the term lightly here) The religious right fundamentalist extreme, the libertarian anti-gov conspiracy racists & corporate warlords. Corporate greed is poised to steal this nomination anyway they can. They’ve even come out with this new pledge that everyone must vote for whomever they nominate.

      Former Gov. Sununu of NH.

    • 282 Linda
      January 8, 2025 at 10:59 am

Sununu angered some when he was the only governor of a U.S. state not to call for repeal of the extremely controversial UN General Assembly Resolution 3379 (“Zionism is Racism”). He later reversed his position on this issue and supported the Republicans’ pro-Israel 1988 platform.[6]

As White House Chief of Staff, Sununu reportedly took personal trips, for skiing and other purposes, and classified them as official, for purposes such as conservation or promoting the Thousand Points of Light.[11] The Washington Post wrote that Sununu’s jets “took him to fat-cat Republican fund-raisers, ski lodges, golf resorts and even his dentist in Boston.”[11] Sununu had paid the government only $892 for his more than $615,000 worth of military jet travel.[12] Sununu said that his use of the jets was necessary because he had to be near a telephone at all times for reasons of national security.[13] Sununu became the subject of much late-night television humor over the incident.[11] Sununu worsened the situation shortly afterwards when, after leaking rumors of financial difficulties in his family, he traveled to a rare stamp auction at Christie’s auction house in New York City from Washington in a government limousine, spending $5,000 on rare stamps.[14] Sununu then sent the car and driver back to Washington unoccupied while he returned on a corporate jet.[14] In the course of one week, 45 newspapers ran editorials on Sununu, nearly all of them critical of his actions.[15]

Sununu repaid over $47,000 to the government for the flights on the orders of White House counsel C. Boyden Gray, with the help of the Republican Party.[16] However, the reimbursements were at commercial rates, which are about one-tenth the cost of the actual flights; one ski trip to Vail, Colorado alone had cost taxpayers $86,330.

But I have read the reactions here and on twitter and elsewhere and have seen clips, and the whole ordeal is quite mind-boggling in the unworthiness of these candidates which has been revealed. For example, I just saw Perry looking proud as a peacock—literally—-for remembering the 3 departments he would abolish. I actually slapped my forehead. Insanity.

Buchanan, a former GOP presidential candidate and a paid MSNBC contributor, hasn’t been on the network since the publication of his book “Suicide of a Superpower” last October. The book has chapters titled “The End of White America” and “The Death of Christian America” and its author argues that the United States is in the “Indian summer of our civilization.”

“When Pat was on his book tour, because of the content of the book, I didn’t think it should be part of the national dialogue much less part of the dialogue on MSNBC,” said MSNBC President Phil Griffin.

Is this what Cuban democracy could look like?
    Nick Miroff| November 27, 2025 08:01

Cuba’s communist leaders may have turned to market principles to tinker with the island’s state-run economy in recent years, but the fundamentals of its one-party political system have remained unchanged and ironclad. Legislation by decree. A state-run media. Centralized planning with aging veterans of Fidel Castro’s 1959 Cuban Revolution in charge.

Yet in the smaller, less visible spaces where Cuban civil society exists — particularly in the island’s Catholic Church and among certain writers and intellectuals — a powerful set of ideas is taking hold that aims to transform the relationship between ordinary Cubans and the political system that has ruled here for more than 50 years.

Pension fund divests from Walmart for violating global labor standards
    By Muriel Kane| Friday, January 6, 2026

The largest pension fund in the Netherlands has divested itself of all shares in Walmart as a result of the company’s anti-union position and poor labor standards. Algemeen Burgerlijk Pensioenfonds declared earlier this week that it was blacklisting Walmart for its non-compliance with the United Nations’ Global Compact, which “presents a set of core values relating to human rights, labor standards, the environment and anti-corruption efforts.” ABP has been trying for years to convince the retail giant to change its policies.

The firm first came to ABP’s attention in 2007, when the fund established a “socially responsible investing” policy and was “struck by the staggering number of lawsuits and National Labor Relations Board complaints” against Walmart.

Fraud and Folly: The Untold Story of General Electric’s Subprime Debacle
    By Michael Hudson| January 6, 2026

For General Electric Co., hawking subprime mortgages was a long way from making light bulbs and jet engines. That didn’t stop the industrial giant from jumping into the subprime business in 2004, lending blue-chip respectability to the market for risky home loans by paying roughly half a billion dollars to buy California-based WMC Mortgage Corp.

What GE got in the bargain, former WMC employees say, was a place where erstwhile shoe salesmen, ex-strippers and even a former porn actress could sign on as sales reps and make big money pushing home loans. WMC’s top salespeople earned a million dollars a year or more and lived fast, swigging $1,000 bottles of Cristal and wheeling around in $100,000 Ferraris and Bentleys.

In pursuit of these riches and perks, several ex-employees claim, many WMC sales staffers embraced fraud as a tool for pushing through loans that borrowers couldn’t afford.

That presidency is a cautionary tale for successors, who aren’t learning proper caution from it. They’re still adamant about low taxes despite being vague about entitlement reform, which carries the risk of alienating important constituencies. So they simply eliminate 43 from the narrative, a bit of creative editing that helps them pin the mind-boggling level of federal debt overwhelmingly on Obama.

In my opinion I think Romney wants this thing to go on for as long as it can because the moment it is over he has to face President Obama. As a child President Obama has lived around the world, both of his parents were highly educated and both came from very humble beginnings. President Obama has climbed mountains most of us can’t even fathom. First African American to become President, although J.A. Rogers might think differently, wink wink. First African American to become editor of the Harvard Law Review, and oh by the way the guy won a Noble Peace Prize. Personally I don’t think that President Obama really cares about whom he has to face, and I don’t think he’s taking whatever is being said about him personally. But David Alexrod wants Romney’s ass in the worst way, make no mistake, Alexrod is more than a advisor, Alexrod is the one that walks around with the basebat. Another of President Obama’s advisors is David Plouffe who is a skilled surgeon when it comes to running campaigns. But Alexrod, this guy is a blunt instrument, and he likes to inflict pain. Romney has no idea what is in store for him.

He isn’t a bomb thrower, but because he’s a milquetoast, it would be easy for us to have another Dick Cheney running this country. Huntsman looks straight outta central casting, but he’s just as dangerous for this country as the rest. Willard would be horrible because he has no core and will do whatever he can to chase the nutbagger votes and install nutbagger cabinet members. Willard needs strong structure. If he ever cheated his way to the presidency, the country would need overwhelming democratic majorities in both houses of congress in order to control Willard.

You might want to watch Huntsman endorsing Palin back in 2008. I think he subscribes to the same right wing ideology (fiscally, not socially) as the rest of them. And, I think if he had enough face time, we’d see he’s probably dipping into some of the same crazy-juice as the rest of them, too. Anyone endorsing Paul Ryan’s Ayn-Rand-inspired philosophy for this country has not done their homework, and does not value human life. The thought of what that plan would do to seniors and those relying on care from social programs is frightening. They’d be left to fend for themselves. It takes a dark heart to think that Paul Ryan’s plan is a good thing. It does nothing but preserve tax money for more tax cuts for the top 1%, at great cost.

He is a true conventional Republican; always has had very conservative roots and I disagree with his policy beliefs….I do; however, believe he understands ‘serving your country’ and knows that compromise with those who don’t share all of your positions is necessary for any movement forward. This is why I think he would appeal to independent voters…I am personally glad he won’t be the candidate, but also glad he is there to create a spark for ridiculous positions of isolationism and obstructionism.

    By Jason Easley| January 8, 2025

Shame on the American media for giving no time to recover from last night’s GOP debate. Here are five reasons why you would have better off staying in bed than watching the Republican debate.

1). Career Politician Mitt Romney Claims Politics Is Not His Career-

2). The GOP Candidates Won’t Tell Americans They Are Going To Kill Social Security and Medicare-

3). Rick Perry Calls Those On Unemployment Un-American-

3 a). Gingrich and Santorum Champion Their Failed 1996 Welfare Reform-

MSNBC is putting forth a valiant effort for Huntsman—-all full of praise, airing his “good moment” over and over. And Heilemann is usually politically astute, and he said he was getting inundated with messages from Paul people, obviously concerned with Huntsman overtaking Paul for the 2nd spot. I think it might happen, given the cheering for Huntsman’s “good moment” and because there are some sane people in N.H. and given that Romney is dropping in the polls there. I also think Huntsman made a big mistake in avoiding Iowa, and foolishly dissing the state. I think he would have had appeal in Iowa which may have vaulted him a la Obama. And everyone saying that no matter what Huntsman would come to a screeching halt in conservative S.C. doesn’t quite hold up since the polls there are currently showing (Mormon) Romney with a lead which was formerly thought to be impossible, given the rt. wing evangelical Repub electorate there. Romney remains unlikable, and everyone knows it, which could lead to some surprises still.

The evangelical still don’t like Mormons, therefore Romney and Huntsman won’t do too well. Also expect attacked ads from Paul and Romney in NH on Huntsman.

Let’s not kid ourselves, this is about ratings. The networks need Romney to not walk away with this thing early. These debates cost them almost nothing to produce and the ratings are pretty good for unscripted content. They want many, many more debates. If they can help the NH voters to avoid a landslide coronation of Romney, they’re all to happy to oblige.

    The Year of Voter Suppression
    By: Nancy A. Heitzeg| Wednesday 4 January 2026

As we enter another election cycle, our most urgent challenge will be to ensure that the right to vote and the right to have that vote counted is protected. It comes as no surprise that this “basic right, without which all others are meaningless” has come under massive attack as we prepare to re-elect the first Black POTUS, who was swept into office by voters of color, youth and women.

Voter suppression efforts take a variety of forms. Certainly there are the blatant efforts to legislatively restrict access to the franchise via legal barriers such as recent changes that require voter identification and documentation of citizenship, limit early and absentee voting, make voter registration more difficult and further restrict the voting rights of former felons. Voter suppression occurs in less direct ways as well, and again these tactics are primarily those of the right, but are occasionally stoked by the disaffected left.

    Class Warfare, Romney-Style
    By Bob Moser| January 6, 2026

Nothing gets Mitt Romney more animated on the campaign trail than inveighing against President Obama’s penchant for wealth-redistribution. The president wants to “substitute envy for ambition and poison the American spirit by pitting one American against another and engaging in class warfare,” as Romney put it earlier this week in Des Moines. But as the non-partisan Tax Policy Center reported yesterday, the former Massachusetts governor is waging his own brand of class warfare.

Romney’s plan would save a middle-income American about $1,400 a year—and lighten a 1 percenter’s tax load by $171,000. It would also add $600 billion to the deficit in 2015. (Among those benefiting from Romneynomics would, of course, be Romney; his net worth is estimated at $250 million, making him one of the 3,140 richest people in America—part of the 0.001 percent.) The Economist calls Romney’s plan “very progressive, by 15th-century standards.”
