Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has set fire to 15 tonnes of elephant ivory as part of the East African nation’s efforts to curb poaching.
The ivory, with a black market value of $30m (£19.4m), is the largest consignment to be destroyed in Kenya.
“Many of these tusks belonged to elephants which were wantonly slaughtered by criminals,” he said at the ceremony in Nairobi National Park.
Elephant ivory is often smuggled to Asia for use in ornaments.
Rhinos are also poached for their horns for use in traditional medicine.
Conservationists have warned that elephants could be wiped out in some parts of Africa in the next few years.

Ok folks, when you’re all done taking in Nerdy’s news, take a dance break.

LL, I started early.i just could not help myself.
As I was left in the dust again on the very last post.
My timing is absolutely perfect!
A mess of snow here in NY.
Surely, I will not be going out tonight in that mess.
Good evening folks. This is a little long but I had to share an email I received from the President of Penzey’s Spices, a large chain of spice stores with, as far as we are concerned, extremely high quality goods. Ised just outside Milwaukee. And with no further ado or comment:
The Pi Day of the century, 3.14/15 is only a little over a week away. For a time now Pi Day has been all about fun and of course pie, but with the way in recent years, science and even reality itself have come more and more under attack, I’m thinking maybe this year it’s time for Pi Day to emerge as something more than just fun.
For so much of our history, the people of our country and the world have benefited greatly from the science-based reality that has shaped America’s future. Science may be based on numbers, but science’s actual value is in its humanity. It’s beyond doubt that through science and the honest representation of reality our lives have become safer, healthier and happier.
Yet today the very science that has done so much to reduce suffering in our lives is now under attack. From the climate, to vaccines, to Wisconsin’s own Governor Walker’s belief that there are more votes in denying evolution than there are in embracing it, clearly somewhere something has gone very wrong. There is more than enough blame to go all around for how we got here, but maybe this is one of those times that where we are is not nearly as important as where we need to be.
Maybe rather than a debate of our differences, what we need is a celebration of what we share. At Penzeys we think Pi Day could grow into just the holiday we need. There really is no time to lose to get on to celebrating the truth of science-based reality and the math behind it. And there is also no time better than now to get back to celebrating the kindness, compassion and the nurturing nature of our shared humanity that has always been behind the very best that science has brought to our lives.
In Pi, the number is all the value and beauty and wonder that is at the heart of the reality science holds. In the gift of a good slice of pie, the desert is all the kindness and compassion that our shared humanity encompasses. Pi Day really is ready to become so much more. And could there be a better day to relaunch Pi Day as the holiday we truly need than 3.14/15; the Pi Day of the Century?
So we are reaching out to our customers for help. We need your stories and a recipe or two. We already have good stories in the works for living with climate change, the value of vaccines, evolution, and the psychology/brain chemistry of why as humans we are so resistant to seeing the certainty of climate change.
Where we still really need your help is in finding an economist or two to speak to why our deficit spending has left our economy and our humanity in so much better shape than what Europe is facing today. And we could also use one more person with the knowledge to speak to the monetary cost and the human cost of sending to prison people who simply need treatment instead.
For recipes we are flexible. Pies are great but not necessary. Maybe you have another baked good you like to share. Or possibly you have a way you like to make some other circular item: a sliced carrot recipe, scallops are always popular, or even a beet salad that’s an old family tradition would do the trick. We really are flexible.
The important thing is if you have the science, or the numbers, or the knowledge that is needed for good policy making in the fields of economics or restorative justice please actually contact us. Don’t wait for someone else to do it. Just email a phone number where we can reach you and I will have one of our friendly writers give you a call.
It’s time to get off the sidelines. We can’t let science and all the goodness it can bring to our lives be a victim of our cultural wars. I don’t mean to be overly dramatic, but the future really is at stake here. With your help 3.14/15 could be the turning point the world so very much needs.
We realize we are looking for a needle in a haystack here, and on short notice. If you know someone who fits what we are looking for, please forward this email to them, or better yet, give them a call.
Thanks,
Bill Penzey
[email protected]

So, we have a great deal to consider here! Now, having done my best, I will return to trying to figure out what part of the Universe I dwell in. <3
Thank you, NW. I always look forward to reading your Tweets of the Day and Laughter at the End of the Day threads. You do a better job of journalism than any of the overpaid MSM.
Thanks, Sjterrid.
Perfect. There must be 400K photos of the President’s laughing at them, and they’re all keepers!
Don’t mean to be shallow, but….this pic is putting me in a ‘Naughty Mat’ frame of mind. Just being an honest TODer this evening.
You are not alone.
The spending bill cleared the House on a 257-167 vote only because of the unanimous support of House Democrats.
All 167 “no” votes came from Republicans — more than twice as many as the 75 who supported the bill. Out of 21 House GOP committee chairmen, 12 broke with leadership and voted against the clean funding bill. Nine voted “yes.”
Hey murka, your beloved ‘patriotic’ repubs at work to ‘protect & serve’ ya. But for dems, your goose (and boner’s) would have been cooked.
You can always trust Nancy Pelosi to deliver!
And how she delivered. Her entire effing caucus. And the dems are ‘reputed’ for cat herding.
This is truly amazing
Toodle-di-doo, folks! Work is on the agenda again tomorrow, so I’m going to try and lure some sleep my way. I didn’t do a good job of this last night so am more tired than usual. Enjoy the rest of your night in the village!
Jesus, Pakistan is on course to score just 250-270 runs. Against UAE. Which, you know, imported its team.
Thank you, Nerdy. Thank you. Thank you for this nightly round up of the day’s news. All we need. You are a tireless warrior for all that is important and just. Hugs and gratefulness to you for another fine roundup:)
Thanks so much, DF. Hugs to you too, you bundle of loveliness.
So to recap, Boner caved on DHS funding and Bibi got a custom made clown suit for that speech. PBO just brushed that nonsense off his shoulders and kept it moving. I still think this embarrassing stunt was done mainly to help Bibi’s election chances. U.S. Congress as campaign prop. That spectacle diminished everyone involved. As his enemies expose themselves as small minded, petty fools, PBO continues to rise in stature.
Just one of the gazillion reasons why we admire our President so much.
SMALL MINDED,PETTY FOOLS WITH TUNNEL VISION THAT ONLY LEADS THEM TO THEIR OWN POCKETS…TODAY WAS JUST A PREVIEW OF THINGS TO COME BECAUSE I BELIEVE THE TP/TOILETPAPER BOYS HAVE MORE IN STORE TO TRY TO UNSEAT MY ENERGIZER PRESIDENT. HOWEVA………….MY ENERGIZER PRESIDENT IS WELL AWARE OF THE DECEITFUL PLANS OF THESE SMALL MINDED FILL IN THE BLANKS AND HE SHALL HAVE THEM RUNNING WITH THEIR SHORT TAILS BETWEEN THEIR LEGS…PLEASE NOTE…I SAID SHORT!
BEAUTIFUL…AND I PUT THE URANIUM CONTAMINATION STORY ON MY FB…UNFORTUNATELY I HAVE COVERED MANY CONTAMINATION STORIES IN MY LIFE…IT NEVER ENDS!
PRICELESS………….HE NEVER LOOKED BETTER!
I can imagine this is what he looks like without his makeup - all the tatts underneath.
The difference is she is ‘running’ for president. Also. Too. Citing repubs to argue your case is lame.
Respectively disagree, amk.
It’s ODS by MSM/GOP/NRA/Comcast/Kochs.
I tuned into most of the daily WHPB today, and the majority of questioners asked about HRC emails. Most of the other questions were about Bibi. Only a handful of questions about anything else.
Today’s WHPB was unique because people who don’t normally attend (like Zeke Miller/TIME and Peter Baker NYT) were there.
It’s eye-opening to watch this spectacle.
You would swear that they have earpieces and repeat the SAME question that is fed to them by Koch or Adelson.
All these overpaid GOP cheerleaders are going to attack PBO throughout the 2016 campaign for President — they’ll parrot whatever the GOP ‘candidate of the date’ is complaining about or attack PBO for any perceived shortcoming by a Dem candidate.
The WHPC jackals behavior looks and feels like watching a high school cafeteria in session.
If she wasn’t running for prez, this issue would have been a nothingburger. Given the open animosity of the emmessem against this admin, how could she act in such a stupid manner? What is the compelling reason to use her personal mail id? It raises transparency/coverup issues. What is the compelling reason not to use gov mail id? Incompetence and/or arrogance is the issue here. When PBO has been above board since day one using gov mail id, what justifies her action?
HRC is defensive by nature. That’s one of the reasons she would make a terrible President.
The others are that she lies and is secretive and would have WJC rattling around the WH with nothing to do.
Just saying that it will be a nauseating 18 months with the WHPC attacking PBO from the 2016 election perspective. Only about 25% of their questions and focus will be on issues that affect Americans from a policy perspective.
The remaining 75% will be on items of a gossipy nature, something for their bloated, inexperienced Campaign 2016 staff to work on.
One of the WHPC questions had to do with Petraeus, reaming PBO because of the secrets leaked under his watch by attacking Josh Earnest accusing this WH of being relentless pursuing journalists who publish leaks.
The frigging MSM had Petraeus on a goddam pedestal during the GWB administration, he could do no wrong.
I agree 100% amk. She didn’t just use it sometimes, she used her personal email consistently to conduct Top Secret SOS business. Which is idiotic no matter how you try to spin it.
The HRC email, like Bibi’s speech, is a pure distraction from the GOP camp that cannot govern. When we talk about extremists, we shouldn’t forget those in Congress.
They would if they could, those wacko-birds.
pootin for prez, nut n yhaoo for speaker. They would do it a heartbeat.
So I guess the HRC PR people put out that supposed “leak” about her emails last night just to give her publicity for her #EMilyList30 speech tonight - which would otherwise have gone largely unnoticed.
In any case, if she needs her PR people to disguise publicity in the form of made-up scandals, she shouldn’t be running for President….Given her stature and name recognition, she should command enough attention just telling it as is…not resorting to stupid games to get people to take notice.
Everybody on my Twitter TL who tweeted about her today got unfollowed by me. Sick of it. As you intimated, the Clintons think “scandals” are a good thing. I don’t.
Exactly!
What is the attraction to Hillary? I just do not get it!
She’s a woman. Apparently, we Democrats have only one woman among us to “run.”
Plus, some PUMAs are still looking for payback for 2008. I’m not a bit interested in her, or anything she has to say or not say!
Eek.
It’s the MSM.
They will be insufferable between now and Labor Day. They have huge staff with nothing to report on except for gossip and donor info.
They love HRC because she and her staff are the opposite of disciplined, ‘no drama Obama.’
Her time has come and gone. I supported her before I realized who then Candidate Obama was. After knowing President Obama, we can’t go back.
ZERO.
She will NEVER be President.
Good night TOD
shiny yellow hair
LOLOLOLz!!!!
“HRC PR people put out that supposed “leak” about her emails last night just to give her publicity for her #EMilyList30 speech tonight”
I won’t be watching. although to be fair, I wasn’t going to watch anyway….but don’t see how this would increase viewership especially when she won’t even address the decision of using a personal email to conduct top secret business. not convinced it was a publicity stunt. no one is that silly..well the GOP would be but any sane person would not think this is a winning strategy.
bbl ….
UhOh, when I clicked on this link, Page Could Not Be Found error message came up. It is Wh tho. Night all. Sweet dreams of the full moon, big hugs all around. I miss my kitty - I always called her ‘the hot water bottle that never goes cold’, gotta miss that for sure. _^..^_
In light of 2014, I find this article scary:

scott walker will never be POTUS
Thanks :)
I felt this report on our ABC about the congress speech today presented a fair and moderate point of view.

Netanyahu’s political tactics imperil historic deal
It seems Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has put his own domestic political concerns ahead of the nuclear deal with Iran. We can only hope this doesn’t backfire spectacularly, writes Tim Mayfield.
…
From Israel’s perspective, far and away the most important factor in securing its borders from hostile neighbours, including Iran, is its alliance with the US. This applies even in the event that Tehran develops nuclear weapons.
As such, Netanyahu’s gambit of tearing down the negotiations with Iran is a fraught one insofar as it has divided opinion in both his own country as well as that of Israel’s primary ally and benefactor.
…..
The main issue in this regard is that a key pillar of diplomacy is for any nation to be seen to be speaking with a united voice. This is why bipartisanship is both emphasised and so highly-prized in the foreign affairs of all countries. Without it, opponents can play to internal divisions or simply hedge their bets and prolong negotiations until the domestic wheel inevitably turns.
…..
Let us make no mistake, Iran has acted unconscionably in seeking to develop nuclear weapons while hiding behind the fig leaf of a civilian program. However, with Tehran finally acting in good faith under the guidance of the moderate president Hassan Rouhani, there is an opportunity to secure a historic deal.
For this to go begging because Likud needs a bogeyman to boost its ailing electoral fortunes would be a terrible travesty.
I never watch Chris Matthews any more … but I notice from afar that once before every full moon, he gets something right.
One can hope this is the straw that makes a few more pundits realize how stupid they have been
Exactly!
Before departing, just wanted to set the record straight with two folk who could defeat #NEOCONSTERbibi ….
Gooood Morning Ms Chips…GM NW…GM TODers….

Since Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu arrived in the U.S., President Obama’s approval rating has increased by 5 points in the Gallup poll.
