A Historic Drop In The Uninsured Rate. Thanks, ObamaCare

FastACA.Vox3.0

Dan Diamond: Thanks, Obamacare: America’s Uninsured Rate Is Below 10% For First Time Ever

For the first time in more than 50 years of surveys, the CDC on Wednesday reported that more than 90% of Americans — 90.8% of us, to be specific — have health insurance. Until now, no major survey had ever found that the uninsured rate in America has hit single digits. The data comes from the National Health Interview Survey, which the CDC and the Census Bureau have been conducting for more than 50 years.

Nearly 16 million fewer Americans were uninsured in early 2015 compared to 2013. And based on past precedent, there’s every expectation that the uninsured rate will continue to go down as enrollment in the ACA exchanges and Medicaid keeps going up. Having more insured customers is good for the health care industry, too. Hospitals are reporting huge jobs gains, and the health care sector is reporting its best 12-month stretch of new jobs in almost 25 years.

On the earlier topic of Bernie, the DSM Register runs a very unfortunate photo of him with their articles – in this particular photo, I think he looks a LOT like Dick Cheney, especially the scowl. :-( Here’s a link to one of those photos: http://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/opinion/columnists/iowa-view/caucus/2015/09/11/bernie-sanders-conscientious-objector-vietnam-war/72070980/

Bill Press had a reporter on who is covering the campaign. She said he is always grouchy, always angry. Right now, that’s what frustrated Dems want, but it cannot be all that we want in a POTUS.

    aloha todville!
just delurking to share this article-maybe you’ve seen it. very interesting history and analysis of pbo’s brilliant long game. though I don’t agree with everything in it, it’s worth the read.

‘ In ways that have eluded Washington pundits and policymakers, President Barack Obama is deploying a subtle geopolitical strategy that, if successful, might give Washington a fighting chance to extend its global hegemony deep into the twenty-first century. After six years of silent, sometimes secret preparations, the Obama White House has recently unveiled some bold diplomatic initiatives whose sum is nothing less than a tri-continental strategy to check Beijing’s rise. As these moves unfold, Obama is revealing himself as one of those rare grandmasters who appear every generation or two with an ability to go beyond mere foreign policy and play that ruthless global game called geopolitics. ‘

Has anyone heard about the new attack on Joe Biden? What a surprise. My friend told me of an article called “Joe Biden Backed Bills to Make it harder for Americans to reduce their student Debt”. Not a surprise, I figured that they’d start attacking him sooner or later. I’m trying to find something to refute this. Can anyone help?

    • 45 57andfemale
      September 15, 2025 at 4:48 pm

We’re going to hear a lot about his voting record. There are a lot of things he voted for that did not turn out as planned, and he would not vote for now. This was to be expected.

I do think America needs Joe Biden as POTUS. I want him to make the best decision for everyone involved, but I sure would love if he ran. And it would be refreshing to see a coherent, yet spirited answer that he would have concerning his voting record.

People like David Sirota are dredging up old legislation votes from Joe that favored his home state of Delaware. I don’t see it as an obstacle. If I know Joe at all, he’ll address it head on if he needs to.

            September 15, 2025 at 5:48 pm

Sherry, 57 and meta. It is true that VP Biden voted for things progressives will not like. He did vote for student debtors to be prevented from declaring bankruptcy as a way to get out from under. If anybody attacks the VP on this basis I want to hear Their plan to restore bankruptcy rights for student debt. If you are not willing to do that, please shut up.

He has had a long career and it is unrealistic to expect a perfect record. Plus,
A few of the giant credit card companies have their headquarters in his state. Not an excuse but an explanation.

Like meta, I expect that VPOTUS will handle these troubling votes with grace.

What does Sanders’ gain by spreading that lie? Doesn’t the GOP do enough evil for Sanders and his supporters to attack them instead of PBO? The unprovoked animosity Sanders and his supporters display towards all things Obama says more about them than it does PBO and his presidency. Campaigning against the sitting two term president who cannot run in 2016 may be cathartic to his supporters, but politically it makes zero sense. Post-policy hatred toward PBO seems to be the main thing holding the Sanders campaign together.

How a supposed political journalist could write about Bernie Sanders wanting to implement a single payer system without mentioning Vermont not being able to implement such a system due to prohibitive costs is journalistic malpractice. That such journalist could then say “You may think single payer is a bad idea for any number of reasons, but ‘it’ll be too expensive’ is probably the least valid objection you could make” takes his offense from malpractice into the realm of blatant propaganda. This is what the Washington Post’s Paul Waldman has done in his latest post. Shockingly dishonest. Seems the media will entertain the pixie dust and fantasies of the Sanders campaign to increase his numbers in effort to hurt HRC and throw shade on PBO.

As I have stated in prior comments, I believe Sanders and Trump are tapping into the same white racial anxiety that has grown during the Age of Obama. A form of “whites only” populism is bound to attract a lot of support in today’s racial climate. Trump is blatant in his exploitation of this phenomenon, while Sanders is trying to be slick, but is exposed by his and his supporters fixation with attacking/belittling PBO. The far right and far left are very similar when it comes to issues of race.

One is a demagogue of the Right, the other of the left. Their speeches focus on demonization of the Other (Mexicans, PBO for Trump; Billionaires for Sanders). President Obama has always focused on working together; change from bottom up; recognizing ourselves in one another. Out of many we are one. He is head and shoulders above both prophets of hatred.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2015/09/15/can-we-please-stop-blaming-the-media-for-donald-trump/

If you are looking to “blame” someone (or someones) for the pole position Trump currently enjoys, you should look around you. Trump is resonating with the American public — or at least a portion of the American public — thanks to his ability to channel their fears, hopes and frustrations. The media didn’t create Trump, and the media won’t bring Trump down. Only Trump can determine what happens from here. Deal with it.
