The Dollar Keeps Growing In Strength. Thanks, President Obama

****

Ari Alstedter: Obama Dollar Rally Is Forecast to Join Clinton, Reagan Upturns

The dollar has an opportunity to make history. After three straight years of gains, strategists are forecasting the U.S. currency will be a world beater again in 2016, strengthening against seven of 10 developed-world peers by the end of the year, according to the median estimate in a Bloomberg survey. That outlook is backed by the Federal Reserve’s stated intent to continue raising interest rates while peers in the rest of the world keep them flat or lower.

The rally that started during President Barack Obama’s second term is poised to join a category defined by only the biggest, most durable periods of dollar strength since the currency’s peg to gold ended in 1971. “This is the third big dollar rally we’ve had,” said Marc Chandler, global head of currency strategy in New York at Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. “The Obama dollar rally, I think, is being fueled by the divergence in monetary policy.” That comes after three straight years of gains for the U.S. Trade Weighted Real Broad Dollar Index, a monthly weighted average of the dollar against the currencies of its main trading partners compiled by the Fed back to 1973

You know, I got fed up with P. Krugman a little way into the president’s first term, but fair play, he has acknowledged some things he was wrong about and has steadily pumped the president’s economic policies ever since. This article is a perfect rebuke to those who say all parties are the same, and the people who are disappointed because PBO didn’t hang, draw, and quarter the ‘banksters’ and stick their bleeding heads up on pikes all down Wall Street.

You know, it just occurred to me that some of those people in the militia in Oregon know full well that President Obama has no qualms about ending their siege one way or the other. And I suspect alot of Republicans know this as well.

I am concerned about the do-nothing approach the FBI and law enforcement is taking with this terrorist act. It’s a very bad message to other domestic terrorists. It’s also a very bad message that if you’re a white supremacist terrorist we won’t touch you, but if you’re black or Muslim, we will kill you. Right now there is free access to this site, free electricity and water, free communications for material support. In fact there is no siege at all.

“It’s also a very bad message that if you’re a white supremacist terrorist we won’t touch you, but if you’re black or Muslim, we will kill you.”

Bill, you call it bad messaging, I call it the way life is in America if you are white, black, brown, and Muslim. This is the history of our country; it has to change one way or the other. You have a major political party that has invented new ways of calling the first black President a N****r, and the most sad thing about this siege is that more people are willing to give this militia the benefit of the doubt than gave Tamir Rice the benefit of the doubt. Now the cynic in me says we should end this siege by any means necessary. But if there’s a way to end it without blood being spilled then we should try it.

but i do not feel that law enforcment going in blazing is the answer…perhaps cutting their life support would make them desperate and dangerous…and rather than surrender…they would do something even more stupid…esp as they left notice that they are ready to die

        January 4, 2025 at 2:39 pm

Obviously they are playing it cool and have some idea of an endgame without violence. But at minimum they can block the road, block re-supply, stop new terrorists from joining them, block communications, cut the power, and isolate them. People are coming and going as they please, holding press conferences. There appears to be no protection for other people who live in the area. I don’t like it at all. And if there is a surrender, each one of those terrorists and those who support them, need to face trial. No amnesty, or they will just keep doing it.

If they were Black or Brown this and more would have been done. By now there would be wailing in the streets and funerals being planned. So tired of the double standard in this country where only White lives matter.

Amen, and long ago I wondered why cars do not have solar collection panels on the roof, to better power the engine. Oh, yes, silly me, how could I have forgotten BigOil??? (Seriously, MP, get a grip.) We are surely 40 years behind in all efforts to get free of fossil fuels; without PBO going the full mile to make sure the economic infrastructure doesn’t collapse, leading to mass fear and shortage, there would not be a foundation to begin the rebuilding. When I hear people (such as thebern) screaming to let it all collapse, I hear insanity at a high pitch. Just saw on FB a guy likened thebern to Jesus Christ, if you can wrap your head around that idea!! As if he can effect a miracle or a few thousand miracles, pixie dust, magic wand, everything gwanna be irey… meanwhile, no one will be hungry, cold, out of work, etc etc. Etcetera. President Carter was the first (I believe) to introduce the idea of sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels, and they tore him apart. We all pay the price, our children and our grandchildren pay the price. Things have got to speed up, I know PBO knows this, I have no question he sees the future more clearly than most. <3

Admittedly I have personal feelings about this. I grew up in Klamath Falls, on the east side of the mountains in Oregon. I grew up using public lands for hiking, camping, and fishing. We used to pull off nearly any roadway in Eastern Oregon and were able to pitch a tent. I have friends who have lived in Burns, been through there many times, and been to the Malheur Refuge with my family, out running at sunrise through the refuge and watching the game, deer, birds, ducks and geese, coyotes. I get really riled that a group of outsider yahoo haters can simply come in and take over and close it off to public use, terrorize the people of Burns and countryside. And what they want to do is take it away from the public and let some rich billionaire own it all. Meanwhile the Eastern media outlets consider it all a joke. And the FBI apparently is shrugging their shoulders and doing nothing.

  26. 76 Vicki
    January 4, 2025 at 2:39 pm

Why the 2016 Democratic Iowa Caucus is Not like 2008:

    1) Senator Sanders is not Senator Obama, (to put it mildly)
    2) In 2008 the Caucus was January 3 and the colleges were out on Holiday.
In 2016 the Caucus date is February 1 and schools will be in full swing. College campuses open and buzzing.
    3) In Iowa you can register to vote up until 10 days before the Primary Caucus. Colleges can register students and work on GOTV.

Whether these factors will benefit either Hillary or Bernie or nobody remains to be seen.
