It’s unbelievable how much Repugs panic whenever PBO speaks UNFILTERED to the American people. They rush to cluck before he speaks and line up two rebuttals. Why? What are they so afraid of?
Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Director Richard Cordray offered an outstretched hand to Republicans on Tuesday in his first appearance before Congress since his controversial recess appointment.
Appearing before the same House Oversight subcommittee where Elizabeth Warren, the architect of the bureau, got into a heated dispute with a Republican lawmaker, the soft-spoken Cordray tried to tamp down the simmering partisan conflict over his agency.
“The people who work at the consumer bureau are always happy to discuss our work,” he told members. “I look forward to working closely with you.”
So bummed that I’m going to be @work during the sotu, but I will be sneaking and reading your comments and hopefully when I get home video will be up. I can’t wait and WE CANT WAIT!
USA - @MittRomney is truly pathetic. This plant - m2.tbo.com/content/2008/a… - closed in 2008, you know, after 8 yr of BUSH/GOP disaster economics— Bobfr (@Our4thEstate) January 24, 2025
Thanks for tweeting that truth Bobfr. The company website mentions the June 2008 closing too.

From the article you linked to: “Nancy Spurlock, a company spokeswoman, said there are no plans to close National Gypsum’s other plant, in Apollo Beach, which employs 75. “The housing downturn has really given us a blow,” Spurlock said.”
That housing downturn that happened on President Bush’s watch triggered drywall sales to go “down 60 percent industry-wide.” He wants to bring back the policies that closed that company.
Hi, Bob…I hope you saw my giant THANK YOU, over at the previous post….regarding the credit score issue. Big kisses/hugs…and I hope that you’ll be able to RT from time to time It’s important to get that out there.

As many of you may remember, Built to Last was a best selling management book published in 1997 about visionary companies and a belief in their ability to succeed. It’s interesting that PBO resurrects the phrase in his SOTU.
at the height of Gingrich’s power in Congress, one of his major speeches had to be edited to remove a racist characterization of Asians, Latinos, and black Americans:
But before Gingrich could deliver his grand new theory of American civilization to the public in a 1993 speech, his deeply divisive racial stereotypes would need to be removed.
“For poor minorities, entrepreneurship in small business is the key to future wealth,” Gingrich wrote by hand in a first draft. “This is understood thoroughly by most of the Asians, partially by Latinos, and to a tragically small degree by much of the American black community.” [...]
By the time a member of Gingrich’s staff typed up the notes and prepared the speech for delivery at the National Review Institute, the racial stereotypes were gone.
What we’ve had for the past 30 years hasn’t been class warfare; warfare implies two sides each battling to achieve an objective. What we’ve had for the past 30 years has been a very small, very rich class of people pillaging the vast majority of their fellow citizens — more like a class version of ethnic cleansing. Class warfare? We can only hope.
Today, Demián Bichir was nominated for the Oscar for Best Actor In a Leading Role for his portrayal of undocumented day laborer Carlos Galindo in the film A Better Life. Demián immediately dedicated his nomination to the undocumented. As he told me when we spoke recently, “I played a role that 11 million people play in real life. They don’t get the attention I do, but they deserve our respect and a chance at a better life.”
It was hi-larious today that even Halperin had to say that Romney looks like a first-class idiot. That even if today is his worst day concerning the issue of taxes, he’s in big trouble.
Here’s what I “expect” since that is what has filled the airwaves today on Pundit TV: I “expect” my beloved President to look and sound authentic, to convey what is in his heart about his vision for America. I “expect” that authenticity to stand in stark contrast to the mendacity and phony posturing of his opponents. I “expect” that he won’t need faux outrage, but a hand stretched forward into the future that Americans can grab hold of.
I’m also hoping that Gabby Giffords is on the aisle and has a warm hug from POTUS. I know her husband will be sitting with FLOTUS, who will be BEAMING in every way.
I know it’s early…but this is looking GOOD! http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/updates/4642
Poll: Democrats By Eleven On Generic Congressional Ballot
A new poll conducted by United Technologies for the National Journal shows a double digit lead for Democrats on the generic congressional ballot test, which asks voters which party they would like to control Congress. Democrats are the choice of 48 percent, while Republicans get 37 percent of voters. It’s a large gap for Democrats compared their scores over the last few months — Dems have lead in various polls, but only by a few points, as its mostly been an even race.
I just received this and had to share it with you all !!!!!
GGail -
I’m heading to Capitol Hill soon to deliver my third State of the Union address.
Before I go, I want to say thanks for everything you’re doing.
Tonight, we set the tone for the year ahead. I’m going to lay out in concrete terms the path we need to take as a country if we want an economy that works for everyone and rewards hard work and responsibility.
Those are values that brought millions of people into this movement, and they remain the core values that unite us and shape our agenda for 2012 and beyond.
But I wouldn’t be able to speak to them without your continued support. I’m glad to know you’ll be standing with me up there.
Something just struck me for the first time. The emails from the President are always signed “Barack.” I wonder how many emails GWB sent out with just “George” at the bottom. But don’t forget, GWB was able to connect with the common American and BHO is too arrogant.
Mine just beeped in. Even though I know that millions get these emails, cards, notes etc. from Barack and Michelle, I still feel included and special. The Christmas cards are still on my display case and I have saved all of the emails.
Democratic National Committee executive director Patrick Gaspard today called Mitt Romney’s tax return release ”limited” and “insufficient” — insisting his party will be unrelenting in its criticism as long as the former governor remains a presidential candidate.
Gaspard — a political strategist leading the onslaught of Democratic attacks on Romney in coordination with President Obama’s re-election campaign — told reporters on a conference call that producing only one year of returns leaves Americans unable to evaluate whether Romney has “financial conflicts that could cloud his judgment.”
In other words, come Election Day 2012, if things are improving, or if the public perceives things to be improving, the president is likely to be re-elected. Fairly or unfairly, the political science literature shows that voters don’t seem to hold a president’s economic performance earlier in his term against him. As long as things are getting better, even if they’re still overall quite bad, voters tend to support re-election.
/snip/
Of course, confidence numbers, and more importantly economic growth, have rallied before during the Obama presidency only to sag again. But today’s numbers are a reminder that while it’s far too late for a great four-year economic performance (regardless of whose fault that might be), there’s still time for the economy to make Obama’s re-election a lot easier than most people think it will be.
I thank you brave souls who actually watch these Recyclables — they simply recyle each others garbage onto our teevees! Ooops, my recyle bin just got mad at me: how dare I call them Recyclables! Back to me calling them … OK, I’ll be nice … *!@$# Species!
Hey there, BWD, no worries! We’re Super Class now — forget First Class! In South Africa, during Apartheid, there was this expression: “Don’t worry, tomorrow we’ll be First Class.”
I’m not nervous about President Obama and his speech. He always rises to the occasion—-every time. I just don’t want some “You lie” type goofball to try to disrupt his speech.
Before we get too depressed about the state of our politics, let’s remember our history. The great debates of the past, all stirred great passions. They all made somebody angry, and at least once led to a terrible war. What is amazing, is that despite all the conflict, our experiment in democracy has worked better than any form of government on earth.
President Barack Obama, University of Michigan Commencement, 2010
BWD, I sympathize. We so much want everything to be right for PBO that we get a little anxious, although it’s probably like Meryl Streep’s husband getting anxious before his wife’s performances. PBO is a master at this, but we are so attuned to him, we imagine his butterflies and want to make it all better. I used to watch Clinton’s SOTUs and honestly didn’t care how he did. But now it’s like a family member going on national tv.
Chips, I have saved your art and it will be my home page. thank you for all that you do.
Tonight will be great, we have your back Mr. President. The contrast between tonight and the GOP debates will tell Americans the real story.
Just ran into joe "you lie" wilson in hallway. "No yelling tonight, right?" I asked. "No, I'm fully restrained," he said with a smile.— Dana Bash (@DanaBashCNN) January 25, 2025
I will never forgive that ass hole. His action is the worst of a long line of insulting and outrageous slights against the president. PBO brushes it off and presses on in bringing a transformation that is ushering in a new golden age. This fool will only be an obscure footnote in history.
He never should have won this district here in Illinois. If Melissa Bean hadn’t run from being a democrat and stood up and defended the Democratic agenda, his worthless ass wouldnt be in Congress.
Well. This is all you need to know about this. (from Steve Benen)
The inconsistencies of libertarian lawmakers: “Outraged over being detained by the TSA when he refused a pat-down after setting off an airport scanner, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) told Fox News host Greta Van Susteren on Monday night that even though he doesn’t want ‘special treatment,’ TSA pat-downs need to be less random, targeting people such as ‘Middle Eastern students.’”
More from Benen: When he was being considered for John McCain’s 2008 ticket, Mitt Romney turned over 23 years of tax returns. If McCain can see 23 years of returns, why can American voters only see two?
I’m starting to read parts of the speech being leaked and they are mirroring what I heard today on the call with VP and Sec Salazar. Get ready for a SUPERB speech.
For everybody who’s hosting a SOTU party, PLEASE don’t forget to input your data ASAP for national HQ!!
@markknoller You know DAMN WELL repubs won't go for that. Remember the smack down in B'more? Refresh memory - c-spanvideo.org/program/291730…— Alycee (@jazziz2) January 25, 2025
Newt might want to rethink his “Food Stamp President” attack.
Newton Leroy Gingrich’s dog whistley “food stamp president” talk, appealing to the lowest of the low (his kind of crowd, apparently), may not have been the wisest idea, no matter how puffed up all that rabid applause made him feel when he pushed such a despicable, and erroneous, message.
Take 59-year-old, blonde, blue-eyed, mother of grown kids, undecided voter, Floridian Susie, for example. She lost her house, her business and her marriage, and had this to say:
“I am a Republican and a conservative … and I had to swallow my pride today and come in and apply for benefits for the first time because I’m losing weight,” Susie said.
Can you spell B-A-C-K-F-I-R-E? I have a feeling she doesn’t appreciate being belittled by Candidate Newton. Just a wild guess.
Story here: http://thepoliticalcarnival.net/2012/01/24/all-that-newt-gingrich-food-stamp-president-talk-could-very-well-backfire/
It can happen to any one of us; I never understand why people are unwilling to realize that it takes very few events to put each one of us in that position.
And of course, the dog whistle aspect is really galling when statistics show that a plurality of food stamp recipients are white. But, then again, they’re suffering economically, so to people like Newt and Mitt they may as well be black.
Mr. President successful people do what unsuccessful people don’t dare. Show them how its done tonight. May the public’s ears, hearts and minds be open to your truth-telling and may we as a Nation all be better for it.
so josh marshall made a gr8 point on twitter. that romney campaign thought by releasing the tax forms today that they’d get buried in the SOTU coverage but…not knowing POTUS would be discussing fair tax and equality, and the Buffett Rule…by releasing the taxes today, Romney just became the poster child for the Buffet Rule…
Even if some people say, ‘Well the Republicans should have done this or they should have done that,’ they will hold the President responsible. Now, I don’t even want to have to be associated with him. It’s like touching a tar baby and you get it, you’re stuck, and you’re a part of the problem now and you can’t get away. I don’t want that to happen to us, but if it does or not, he’ll still get, properly so, the blame because his policies for four years will have failed the American people.
Let’s money bomb PBO through TOD right after the speech, after all, they understand the language of money! Votives alight all over the house, sandalwood incense keeping the vibrations in neutral… Fired up, I am ready to go! Have fun everyone, see you back here in a little while!
Fired Up

Wonder if Romney thought that no one would find this out? dumb ass.
More likely he thought no one would care, since he doesn’t!

That momentary image of W’s sheer incompetence is really, really, really effective to remind us what the GOP stands for.

All the major networks (CBS, ABC, NBC), all the cable channels (CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, FOX NEWS) and a few other stations

Will email you tomorrow Admiral
Oh shit! Am I in the poopy locker?
Boner is probably crying on Nancy Pelosi’s shoulder as we speak.
Didn’t he say at one point “I didn’t sign up to go mano a mano with the President of the United States”? He is the most useless Speaker ever.

The only thing Willard has is money. His answer to most things seems to be buy it, sell it, bet it and keep it at all cost.
And he thought that he would just need to sit back while his dirty money bought him the Presidency. He’s finding out quite differently…

The new soundbite….pro-poverty……”policies of envy” doesn’t seem to work too well for them…..
Trouble with their desperation, it does not fit the president’s rhetoric or policies, and so they end up sounding dumb.
Project much, Mitch?
Mitch needs to thank the President for all that Recovery Act and Healthcare Money he grabbed for Indiana.

Do you think Robney is part of the Borg collective!
It was hi-larious today that even Halperin had to say that Romney looks like a first-class idiot. That even if today is his worst day concerning the issue of taxes, he’s in big trouble.

I HOPE THERE ARE SOUNDBITES WITH “THE AMERICAN BLUEPRINT!”
There are some very great initiatives that will translate well for the middle class. Tonight is all about restoring the bargain with the middle class.
What the hell is that suppose to mean?
My favorite intro line tonight will be when the Sergeant at Arms of the House says, “Mister Speaker, the President of the United States” …
and the President he’s introducing is our very own PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA!
Actually, my favorite line was when he said, “Madam Speaker … ” - but we’ll get Speaker-for-Life Pelosi back, soon!
I’m so with you!!
We need to hit them. Hit them hard.
Thanks, and I hope you can tune in tonight.
Barack
Something just struck me for the first time. The emails from the President are always signed “Barack.” I wonder how many emails GWB sent out with just “George” at the bottom. But don’t forget, GWB was able to connect with the common American and BHO is too arrogant.
Mine just beeped in. Even though I know that millions get these emails, cards, notes etc. from Barack and Michelle, I still feel included and special. The Christmas cards are still on my display case and I have saved all of the emails.
oh I just got that one too!
Right beside you, Mr. President. Right beside you all the way.

55 minutes to SOTU!
Dude, I’m nervous.
They’re in “straightjackets” — see tweet above. If not, our keyboards will be smoking tonight!
WE GOT THE BEST POLITICIAN IN A GENERATION ON OUR SIDE, BWD!
You and I are always nervous………
I know!! It’s terrible!
Just noticed your smiley! Nervous-not!
Going to miss him.
He says he’ll still be blogging but from a different address.
But can be be as responsive as he’s been with a new gig as Rachel’s producer ? I doubt it…….
Not sure if this is part of the SOTU, but one thing Joe said today on ccall that stuck: “Bin Laden is dead and GM is alive”
I’m going to use that one on some of the people I know. Thanks Meta.
Go for it.
Nancy Pelosi’s daughter must have been on your call, because she tweeted the “Bin Laden is dead, and GM is alive” line!
Succinct and to the point.
And it’s a BFD!
LOLzzzzz!!
K folks I’m staying right here on the couch with you all except I gotta go pop me some popcorn with plenty of butter!
Mark you asswipe….always reinventing the “rules of the game” for this President. Gee…wonder why?
Newt might want to rethink his “Food Stamp President” attack.
The videos playing at whtiehouse.gov are terrific. I’m having a problem with the enhanced version. The screen freezes.
Present and accounted for. Beautiful, iconic graphic, Chips….brilliant work!
Can’t wait to see what FLOTUS is wearing.
Mr. President successful people do what unsuccessful people don’t dare. Show them how its done tonight. May the public’s ears, hearts and minds be open to your truth-telling and may we as a Nation all be better for it.
Knock it out of the park Sir!
Lighting a candle for you and this country:

Ready to go?
http://theobamadiary.com/2012/01/24/state-of-the-union-updating/
Roll call!
I’M IN from San Francisco!
I’m in from the UK!! Surprisingly easy to drag myself out of bed, even my husband is up to watch (usually he watches the video in the morning)
so josh marshall made a gr8 point on twitter. that romney campaign thought by releasing the tax forms today that they’d get buried in the SOTU coverage but…not knowing POTUS would be discussing fair tax and equality, and the Buffett Rule…by releasing the taxes today, Romney just became the poster child for the Buffet Rule…
What kind of idiots didn’t know that income and tax inequality has been a theme of the Democrats?
Who are these idiots who think they can run the country?
Just hit the CERB button. All’s good w/ my world. Now I’m ready for SOTU!
PBO will address the mortgage crisis in a significant way.
Secretary of Ag Tom Vilsack has been chosen to sit out the SOTU to preserve Presidential line of succession.
No words other than VOTE HIM OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Congressman Doug Lamborn.

And by the way, that was a quote from him. I’m getting ready to watch my amazing President in a few minutes. All is right with the world.
Nervous! Always feel anxious before our president’s big speech!!!!
PRESENT…LET’S DO THIS !
Good Evening Everyone !!!!!!!!!!! Fired Up!!!!!
.jpeg
Let’s money bomb PBO through TOD right after the speech, after all, they understand the language of money! Votives alight all over the house, sandalwood incense keeping the vibrations in neutral… Fired up, I am ready to go! Have fun everyone, see you back here in a little while!
