Michael Tomasky: Fascinating series of tweets from the economist Justin Wolfers … the Bureau of Labor Statistics has released its annual revisions of the jobs numbers … Result? They were only off by 386,000 jobs.

….. That, says Wolfers, equals 32,000 more jobs every month - every month, friends - than we knew. So the economy that year was adding an average of 194,000 jobs per month, not 162,000 ….. “The BLS benchmark revisions means that there has been a net jobs gain since Jan ’09. Romney can no longer talk about job losses under Obama.”

I would say this is rather big news. Meshes pretty nicely with this recent development that people are apparently feeling a little better about the economy, and becomes, I should think, a pretty good applause line for Obama to add into his speeches.

Washington Post: Voters in three critical swing states broadly oppose the far-reaching changes to Medicare associated with the Republican presidential ticket and, by big margins, prefer President Obama to handle the issue, according to new state polls by The Washington Post and the Kaiser Family Foundation.

For seniors in Florida, Ohio and Virginia, Medicare rivals the economy as a top voting issue. And by majorities topping 70 percent, seniors say they prefer to keep Medicare as a program with guaranteed benefits, rather than moving to a system in which the government gives recipients fixed payments to buy coverage from private insurers or traditional Medicare, as Romney advocates.

… Generally, the more voters focus on Medicare, the more likely they are to support Obama’s bid for reelection.

The future of Medicare, the federal health program for the elderly and disabled, has become a flash point in the campaign since Romney’s selection last month of Rep. Paul Ryan…. Now, the challenges for Romney in the aftermath of the Ryan selection are becoming clear.

Michael Tomasky: On the Hardball set last night, Matthews told me that George W. Bush, on November 1, i.e. five days before the election, is giving a speech in…the Cayman Islands! It’s true.

What is he thinking? I guess he’s thinking first and foremost that he’s going to pocket $2 million or whatever it is they’re paying him (it’s an investment summit of some kind). But hasn’t he sort of noticed that overseas tax shelters in general and the Cayman Islands specifically have become campaign issues, and liabilities for the standard-bearer of his party?

It’s not even just about Romney; Bush may or may not give a crap about him. But it’s about Bush. This speech is, if the Democrats set it up properly, going to generate maybe two days of negative stories about the GOP and plutocracy that are going to include revisitations of the dismal Bush record. If he were going to make himself an issue in the campaign in such a public way, you’d think he might have decided to go visit veterans in a hospital or something.

Eugene Robinson: Conservative activist circles are abuzz with a new conspiracy theory: Polls showing President Obama with a growing lead over Mitt Romney are deliberately being skewed by the Liberal Mainstream Media so Republicans will be disheartened and stay home on Election Day.

This is denial and self-delusion but not of the harmless kind. It’s a false narrative that encourages the Republican Party to take the wrong lessons from this election, no matter the outcome.

      Good morning everyone.

Thanks for sharing this great video. Our side is so creative, joyous, inclusive and fired up bevcause we are voting for someone and a set of ideals not merely against someone. Added to this our guy is the real deal who makes us even more proud to be Americans. Forward into the future.
So excited about early voting turn outs. The elderly woman in Iowa who said that was fired up as she went into the polling place just warmed my heart. I have to wait until 10/27 (I live in Fla.) to proudly cast my 3rd vote for PBO. Have a wonderful day everyone.

When one of my daughters got numerous scholarships in her senior year of high school. Many people said how lucky she was! I think people just say that without really meaning it sometimes in real life. This does not apply to political life. She was miffed due to the fact that besides getting straight A grades all the way through high school, she was the president of the National Honor Society that started a high school tutoring group, on sports teams, involved in community services, and in her church. She also traded her study hall for working in the Sr Counselor’s office to keep track of all of the scholarships available to the class. She gave up her social life to write scholarship essays and fill out applications her senior year. She organized the college fair for the school. Anyhow it was work not luck! I found a saying plaque that said
Luck is opportunity meeting up with hard work and planning.
I feel this also applies to PBO for sure!

So true. Your daughter deserves to be proud of her hard-won accomplishment. Just like President Obama, who has worked tirelessly every one of these nearly four years, and is once again running against an opponent who has put in partial effort in the campaign, but complains about being tired and jet lagged.

Talking to myself on the other thread again. Hope nobody minds a repost to this one!

This morning I am both proud of Iowa and embarrassed as well! Very proud of all the voters who packed the early voting sites yesterday to get this show on the road. Every report I heard was that the auditors’ offices did not expect nearly that many to turn out – here’s hoping the trend continues for each of the remaining days until Election Day! I’ll be at the Johnson County auditor’s office at noon to drop off our ballots.

What embarrassed me was opening the opinion page of the Des Moines Register today (http://www.desmoinesregister.com/opinion) and finding a nasty editorial about PBO by Rep. Steve King. This guy is such an embarrasment to Iowa, I don’t know why the folks “out west” keep voting for him. Every time one of his dumb quotes hits the news I just cringe. I really, really hope he gets defeated this year with the new redistricting lines – but I doubt it. Anyhow, I don’t recommend reading his drivel – but the comments against him are pretty good.

How the Democrats are winning the voter ID law battle

// When Republican-led state legislatures and governors passed controversial voting bills throughout 2011 and earlier this year, the provisions at first appeared a major impediment to President Obama winning re-election. Many of the laws were adopted in key states, including Florida, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, and liberal groups estimated they could prevent millions across the country from voting and would disproportionately affect blacks, Latinos and the elderly, who are less likely to have some of the forms of identification required by the laws.

But a strong alliance of activist organizations, the Obama administration and progressive media has largely blunted the impact of the laws, which range from requiring photo identification to vote to imposing fines on voter registration groups for turning in forms late. In nearly every battleground state, Democrats have successfully cast the laws as discriminatory and unnecessary and won in court, keeping in place largely the same voting laws that existed when Obama won in 2008. //

    • 57 hopefruit2
      September 28, 2025 at 10:05 am

This newfangled MSM “Clinton love” is nothing but a veiled attempt to use Clinton to take cheap shots at President Obama. That’s all it is and nothing more. Much of the time, whenever there is mention of Clinton in the media, it’s almost always accompanied by a not-so-subtle put down of President Obama, some comparison where PBO doesn’t quite measure up to Bill Clinton.

The MSM doesn’t love Clinton all that much, but they will use him if they can to tear down our President or divide the DEM base.

      • 58 EricFive
        September 28, 2025 at 11:58 am

I agree HF. In addition, Bill Clinton is no longer in power and is not a threat to the GOP (he can never be president again). I remember the hatred the GOP/MSM had for Bill Clinton during his presidency. I also remember how willingly the MSM jumped on the impeachment bandwagon. As for comparing Clinton and PBO as public speakers, it is no contest. I record all of PBO’s speeches when I am able to, I never recorded a Bill Clinton speech when he was president. The MSM has been pushing the meme that PBO is unable to get his message out to voters (while conveniently ingoring their role as filter). This sudden deification of Clinton and his communication skills plays into this meme. How I wish our media was objective instead of constantly altering reality to fit preconceived anti-PBO memes.

        • 59 Obama Grandmama
          September 28, 2025 at 3:31 pm

It was easier for Bill Clinton to address what was going on in his DNC speech since he was outside the situation. PBO has to be careful about too much bragging or complaining as it just gives fodder to the other side.

President Obama will be staying in Washington Friday, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be campaigning. Well, campaign fundraising. To the tune of $2.5 million.

The toniest event he will attend is a $20,000-per-head reception at the Rock Creek Park mansion of Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va). Some 90 guests are expected, according to a campaign official.

Obama will hopscotch to the reception between two other fundraisers at the Capitol Hilton, where roughly 900 people will attend — 700 for a $250-per-ticket reception and 200 for a smaller gathering at $2,500 per ticket.

Chuck Todd has already adjusted his polls, registered voters and likely voters are 5-8 points difference.
Yet, democrats are just as enthused.

        • 75 99ts
          September 28, 2025 at 11:32 am

Jodie, all the pundits are “adjusting” the polls to keep Romney in the race. People are telling pollsters that they are democrats - many more than republicans - so that is a massive boost to enthusiasm. I think some of the GOPers will stay home - which is what Chuck Todd is trying to avoid. There is a good report on the Gallup site as to why the polls are what they are.
          http://pollingmatters.gallup.com/2012/09/the-recurring-and-misleading-focus-on.html

I can still remember panicking in 2008 because the right wing sites were saying the polls were wrong and adjusting them for many weird reasons.

          • 76 EricFive
            September 28, 2025 at 12:18 pm

When will we start hearing about the GOP’s enthusiasm gap? Voters are fleeing the GOP. More and more are self identifying as Independents. Same thing happened in 2008. The GOP/MSM is well aware of the effect bad poll numbers play in voter enthusiasm. That is why we are subjected to constant spin concerning Mitt’s poll performance (MSM reports polls where Mitt is behind by several points at “tied”). Now we have FoxNews saying all polls (including their in-house polls) have a liberal bias. Pathetic.

Romney to speak with Netanyahu on Friday, same day as Obama

PHILADELPHIA — Mitt Romney is set to speak by telephone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (neh-ten-YAH’-hoo) on Friday.

The Republican presidential nominee’s campaign confirms the scheduled conversation. It would come the same day that President Barack Obama also is expected to speak with Netanyahu phone.

When I first saw the Univision clips I thought Mitt had partaken in a spray tan like they do in Dancing with the Stars, but his ears were not covered. I considered bottle tan, but now think it was just dark make-up even though the campaign said it wasn’t. The reason I think this is I saw another clip on one of the MSNBC shows yesterday (having nothing to do with the sudden tan). It seemed there was a line from his ears down his face and it was very white behind the line where the neck starts under the ears back. Also who believes what ever the campaign or Romney says anymore?

Thank you Chips. They have a bot that detects the number of @addressees in tweets and if it exceeds some threshold, which they do not reveal, and the addressees are not following you, and you, them, they automatically suspend the account and send you a warning. If you agree to behave, they reinstate your account.

          We’ll see how long I behave ;)

Nate Silver has this graph up based on his “now cast” figures. The man of understatement Nate says - Sept 28, 8.30am
“What we can say with more confidence is that Mr. Romney is now in a rather poor position in the polls.”

Nut-N-Yah-who has been claiming Iran would be close to enriching uranium since 1992! Fortunately the people in his own country denouce his meddling in American political campaigns.

So why is it Mitt is never asked about his support of the draft during the Vietnam war, and his “deferments” to make sure he was never sent to Vietnam? Simple question.

    http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2012/09/28/924721/energy-policy-101-barack-obama-versus-mitt-romney/

Clean energy is an important part of the economy of Colorado, which is the location of the first presidential debate on October 3rd.

The United States is in the midst of significant changes in our energy outlook. We are producing and burning more natural gas for electricity, while reducing coal use. Domestic oil production is at a 15-year high while oil imports are at a 15-year low. Renewable electricity doubled over the past four years, while worldwide carbon pollution and the impacts of climate change grow. The next president will face these and other serious challenges posed by a changing energy world.
President Barack Obama’s first term featured the adoption of essential toxic and carbon pollution reduction measures to protect public health. In addition, he modernized fuel-economy standards for the first time in two decades, which also helped the auto industry; invested in energy efficiency and renewable electricity; and created tens of thousands of jobs.
Gov. Mitt Romney’s energy agenda couldn’t be more different. He would undo new safeguards from mercury, carcinogens, soot, and smog from industrial sources. He opposes the improved fuel-economy standards, and would continue and expand tax breaks for big oil companies, while openly disparaging clean energy and investments in wind power.

Also a GREAT CHART here that I can’t get to!! Chips???????????????? Please Tweet this!!

So they think people won’t see through that? And how childish and insulting could they get with the “don’t vote for him, his mom was a slut” pitch? Real Presidential Mitt! What an asswipe!

Stupid fucks. First of all, as you say, people won’t believe it. Secondly, what would that have to do with PBO? Slandering someone’s spouse or children CAN SOMETIMES work on the grounds that you voluntarily married the person and raised the kids. But attacking your parents???!! We don’t chose our parents!!
        Lord, they’re certainly desperate.
